Self Re-arranging Desktop!!

I've recently been having a problem with my desktop icons all rushing to the right side of the screen of my 21" iMac. This has only been happening since I installed Lion. I've also noticed that sometimes when starting up the Apple appears on screen, then the little spinner below it and sometimes a progress bar appears. This gets approx 25-30% across then disappears and the system appears to continue startup but when the smoke clears the menu bar is missing and everything is very slow and I have to restart then everything is OK until Airport starts its antics.
I've been threatening to go back to Snow Leopard but have been hoping things would improve. Looks like that was wishful thinking and not a word from Apple either!!!!!
Mac OS X Lion not so much a ROAR as a .....meeow!

  • Question about sysprep re-arranging desktop icons

    I can deploy my windows 7 image just fine, the copy profile is working as well, but I have setup the icons a specific way on the desktop on a couple of my images, and after deployment they always go back to the standard looking rows, and I lose all the customization
    of the desktop icons that I set up.
    Is there a way to tell sysprep or is there something I can do in the task sequence to keep my nice desktop icon customizations, and not have it go back to the standard rows after imaging?

    Hi,
    You could check the thirt-party below.
    "If you want to email the arrangement to someone or if you simply want to export it from the program, then you can also easily do that by saving the arrangement in ‘.dok’ format. The ‘.dok’ files can be exported and imported by DesktopOK only.
    You can even register this extension for DesktopOK but for this you will need to grand Administrator Privileges to the software."

  • How to arrange desktops in 2x2 grid instead of 4x1

    I've set up four desktops in Mission Control, but they are arranged in a single row.  I'd like them logically in a 2x2 grid, as I had them on my old Mac (was Leopard, now using 10.9.5).  Any ideas?

    Why?
    As someone who used to use DAW's which displayed split stereo files (Pro Tools, Prisma) I can say that the extra screen space you get by NOT displaying twin tracks is like gold. And in any case, the waveform display IS stereo. Look at a waveform on a stereo track where there is more information on one side than the other. You will see that the waveform display is weighted to that side. It's a twin-rectified display, so the left channel displays above the centre, the right channel below. And you can always tell by looking at the icon on the region after the title. And, of course, the meter display for the relevant track shows each side of the stereo, or all 6 of the 5.1 channels.
    Logic's native mode is to use interleaved stereo files, which are a single file. No more headaches with having to deal with 2 files all the time, which could get disconnected with a simple typo.
    If you MUST use split stereo files, turn off Universal Track Mode in the audio preferences. And make sure you read the relevant pages of the manual.
    This is surely the way all DAW's will end up, because it is much more efficient. In my opinion.

  • Remote Desktop Re-arranging Desktop Icons

    I have a Windows 8.1 Pro desktop customized with the Control Panel | Personalization | Display option to smallest possible size for desktop icons.   This works well enough for a login by console.
    As soon as I connect by Remote Desktop, the arrangement of icons on the desktop is completely scrambled.   Is there any way to remember the arrangement of desktop icons and have these be the same for both console and remote desktop connections to Windows
    8.1?
    Will

    Hi Will,
    "Dynamic scaling level update" is a new Windows 8.1 feature.
    Remote Dsktop Connection now also updates the scaling level in the remote session to match the client-side configuration. you must change it on the local PC and it will automatically be updated in the session.

  • How can I arrange desktop icons on left instead of on the right?

    Hi there,
    When I download items to the right of the desktop, my aliases, files and folders all shift from the left (where I prefer them) to the right. I like the Mac HD icon in the upper right, that's fine, but that moves around, too. How can I stop this?
    Thanks,
    Sparkyis_myguy
    (and he's got feathers, too)

    Hello Sparky,
    I was concerned about similar issues but took a different approach.
    Basically, Mac browsers default the download location to the desktop. However, that location can be changed in the Preferences for any browser I've tried. I create a folder somewhere (usually in my Documents folder) labeled "Downloads" and then open the various browsers I have and "point" the browser's d/l/location to the new Downloads folder. I believe once you set one browser to use the new folder, others automatically find it but I still check each one/
    Yes, it's sometimes convenient to have stuff d/l/to the desktop but I like to keep my desktop clean; too many items on the desktop can create performance issues, too. Ways to keep fast access to downloaded files are several:
    1) Create an Alias of the Downloads folder on the desktop.
    2) Drag the new folder icon to the left-hand pane in Panther's Finder window--it will be there no matter what window you open.
    3) Drag the Downloads folder to the Dock at some point the the right of the little separator that segregates the Trash icon.
    I do both 2 and 3 and feel it has had no negative effect on fast access to files I download, yet I still get a clean desktop.

  • Cannot re-unite T3 data with Palm Desktop! Please helP!

    Hi folks
    I would be very grateful for some help with restoring my data.
    After a laptop rebuild by my company Helpdesk-er, my self-installed Palm Desktop stopped working with an "invalid configuration message. It had previously been working - for years - without a problem. I copied the original data folder (first letter of my user name) to another location, and then downloaded and ran PD414esetup.exe from the PalmOne website. This installed Desktop 4.1.4 cleanly over the old installation (in the same directory). On starting PD414, it defaulted an older user name that it probably picked up from the registry, so I created a new user which matched the name that I had before.
    Obviously the Desktop was devoid of content, so I attempted to import the data that I had copied out, starting with the calendar. The only option File|Import allows is the .DBA format, and although my datebook.dat was intact, I could not import it. There was a clutch of .DBA files, corresponding to some of the calendar categories that I had set up (didn't look like all categories). On importing the first of these, PD said it acquired 3 entries, and similarly a couple of others produced single-digit entries - nowhere near the six years worth of data I had before!
    I then copied the backed-up data to a new location, and changed the data directory (Tools|Options) to this new location, hoping the data would be picked up. Result: no calendar, contacts or task data, but all the memo records showed up!
    The other thing I tried was to copy the backed-up data into the default data directory, but PD wouldn't let me; error to the effect of "not permitted, file in use".
    So, at this point, I have a functioning Palm Desktop that has my Memo records but seemingly no way to get back any of my other data (calendar being the most urgent).
    Could anyone help re-connecting the data to the Desktop program?
    Also, I guess the other option is to do a HotSync and let the hand-held overwrite the Desktop the very first time. I'm not very sure about this, fearing that I might lose the data on the handheld.
    What advice would the experts give me?
    Device: Palm Tungsten T3 running Palm OS v5.2.1
    Connection: USB Cradle
    Computer: Windows XP Pro on Dell Latitude E6400 laptop
    Post relates to: Tungsten T3

    Lesson: Use the correct software version!
    Re-installed using PD414EN and all is good! Hurray!

  • [Mostly Solved]LXDE - Desktop

    How would I be able to re-arrange desktop icons and add options in the menu?  Currently, desktop icons all stack starting in the top left and are not moveable.  As for the menu, I'm not sure how to edit it. Editing the openbox menu that I have appear on right-click would be an added bonus.  Thanks.

    You can, but it's a bit cumbersome. Copy /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu into ~/.config/menus and edit it. Changing sort order is quite simple, here an example of my Multimedia section:
    <!-- Multimedia -->
    <Menu>
    <Name>Multimedia</Name>
    <Directory>lxde-audio-video.directory</Directory>
    <Include>
    <And>
    <Category>AudioVideo</Category>
    </And>
    </Include>
    <Layout>
    <Merge type="files" />
    <Filename>xmms.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>mplayer.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>xine.desktop</Filename>
    </Layout>
    </Menu> <!-- End Multimedia -->
    Note the 'Layout' part. The Multimedia menu will be arranged according to the order in which items are listed here.
    It's not possible to freely arrange desktop icons. It will be in the new version of pcmanfm that's currently being developed.
    Thanks for th help.  Editing the lxde menu doesn't look too much different from the openbox one.
    I heard somewhere that pcmanfm2 was stable enough for testing.  I'm curious to try it out but I'm not sure which is the most up-to-date, the pcmanfm-svn or the git version?

  • Is Mission Control customizable like Spaces?

    Hi,
    with Spaces in SL there was this nice feature to have apps opening always in one space which I assigned to them. In Mission Control this seems not to work at all. Every morning I need to arrange the programs again. That is not an imporvement. Is there a way that MC remembers the programs and its assigned screen?
    For some reasons the screens in mission control seem to rearrange them selfes as well from time to time. So from the original order 1,2,3,4 they suddenly arrange to 3,1,4,2 or similiar. Does this make sense?
    Cheers,
    KM

    Yes it is customizable, for example go to desktop 1 and open the app you want assigned to desktop 1.
    now go to the icon in the dock, press control whilst clicking on the apps icon, a menu should pop up.
    Navigate to options and under that you should see 'assign', there should be two choices, assign to all desktops
    or assign to this desktop, click assign to this desktop. This will now remember that that app opens in desktop 1.
    Do this with other desktops and apps as you like. Go to Mission Control prefs in system preferences and unclick the butto that says arrange desktops according to most recent use, unclicking this keeps the desktops in numerical order. Also in in keyboard shortcuts prefs make sure the mission control shortcuts are ticked with
    the appropriate Cmd + number ( Cmd+1 for desktop 1 etc). Not quite as slick as Spaces was but once it is don it is done. A bonus is you can choose different desktop pictures for each desktop.
    Hope this helps

  • How to use Group Policy to remove the shutdown button on the logon screen

    Environment:  Shared use computers running Window 7 Professional and MS office Suite; Windows 2008 Standard server, Windows 7 EC Domain Policy and MS Office 2007 ADML Template downloaded from Microsoft. WIndows 7 Accounts OU.
    I am in the process of developing a shared use computer lockdown policy for several Windows 7 computers that will made available in my client's computer lab.  I need to use a group policy setting to remove the Shut Down button on
    the logon screen of the Windows 7 client computers.  I am editing the Windows 7 EC Domain Policy to user accounts in a Windows 7 Accounts OU that I created.  I am using the Group Policy editor in the Group Policy Management Console.
    Please let me know the best practice for accomplishing this using Group Policy editor.
    Thanks.
    P.S. I tried a setting recommended in the following link in the Windows 7 EC Domain Policy which did not seem to work.
    http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/group-policy/can-i-use-group-policy-to-display-or-remove-the-shut-down-button-on-the-logon-screen-.aspx

    Hi Vernon,
    I tried the group policy you mentioned (Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, and select Security Options, "Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on") and it worked on a Windows 7 client.
    Thus you may need to check if the group policy you created is actually applied to clients.

    So here is the issue: The only computer I have (a self built Windows desktop) has no disc drive. How can I install Lightroom when I can not physically put the disc in my pc? I am not willing to buy a external disc drive either.

    Just download/install the trial - your license key transforms it into the full/registered/unrestricted version..

  • ANN: Adobe Spry User Group launched

    Hello,
    I'm honored to announce the launch of the first Adobe Spry User Group, Spry-it. In all the years I have worked with Spry both on a personal as well as on a enterprise level I came to realize that there really little blogging, articles, documentation and information written by the community for the community. There are a few youtube video's here and there. But its all scattered over the place. Spry-it aims to solve that by attempting to become a center point of community driven content, providing users with new ways to receive information and learn about Spry from RSS feeds to Adobe Wave notifications till e-mail newsletters. Not only will we attempt to bundle and organise content, we will also be providing you with content and Spry related services.
    A few highlights that we attempt to provide:
    A new searchable, API system, that actually contains all the information about the Frameworks methods. Not only the once the Spry team has documented. This will allow users to find more advance, and sometimes more powerful methods that will make it easier to create or polish their applications.
    Articles, this will range from skinning a various of widgets. Till creating your own widgets. But also explaining best practices and performance tricks they can apply to improve Spry it self.
    A desktop application that will wrap all the information for the users, providing offline documentation that will automatically update it self once connection with internet has been created.
    New demo's, these will push Spry to its limits providing you insights to advance techniques with little code.
    Working with new platforms, think about Iphone, Adobe AIR, Aptana Jaxer, Palm Pre.
    And much more.
    So sign-up, its FREE And you just use your Adobe Account to log in. http://groups.adobe.com/groups/f1621de53b/summary
    If you have idea's for your self, I'm still searching for a co-manager. The only requirement is passion.

    I cannot find anything in the guidelines on the subject.
    Ben
    Personally I don't mind bumping a few topics here and there. For example if something requires attention. But just posting the word "bump" will be considered spam. The bump content needs to add some sort of value to the topic.
    As for Spry-it.com progress. We are currently running on our staging server, connecting the nuts and bolts with the screws .
    The Adobe groups platform is getting updated and I hope to get something running on Spry-it.com by that.

  • Lion vs Snow Leopard   ..... a wish list of things that should come back

    I switched to Mac about a year and half ago. After years and years with Windows this was (almost) like entering nirvana. Things "just worked", I did not have to worry about details. And what I liked the best was discovering all these tiny features here and there that were so cool. I though "wow, this is developed by geniuses". I was so excited to have Lion as soon as possible, because I couldn't wait to have even more of these smart improvements.
    What a surprise... I am now in the exactly opposit situation. I keep discovering which of those nice features are actually gone.
    Hence, I am suggesting to other mac users: let's make a list of things we liked on Snow Leopard that are missing in Lion and we would like to have back.
    Here is my first small contribution:
    1) pinch-to-zoom in Finder and open/save dialogs
    2) drag and drop of windows between arbitrary desktop previews in Mission control
    3) possibility to re-arrange desktops by drag and drop
    4) view all windows of all apps in Mission control (windows are on piles and even scroll gesture does not push them enough far appart)
    5) expose that would reveal windows on desktop previews
    6) repeat key if kept pressed instead of a bubble with letters I never saw before
    7) more control over what and when is saved (not only the autosave function)
    8) gray iCal and Address book
    9) option+shift+volume button - fine control of volume
    What about you? What else have you discovered?

    As a Mac power user - LION IS A DISAPPOINTMENT
    Apple needs to seriously consider briniging back
      • SPACES: the capability to move up as well as down to access applications
         AND have applications stay in a desgnated space makes it much easier
         to run multiple applicatioins - especially in a multi-monitor environment
      • SAVE AS: Saving various versions of a file is difficult with Lion.
        If I want a 3 versions of a document - with different pictures, it takes too many "clicks" to accomplish
         this task.  LET ME CHOOSE HOW I STORE FILES
      • COPY COMMAND: Snow Leaopard allowed me to copy files to a storage device AND if the file
         was already written to the device - the option to NOT REPLACE the file existed.  This made it
         easy to backup work on a portable drive.
         LION ONLY has two options - copy all or make an addition copy of the file, causing storage bloat
    APPLE NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING THESE FEATURES BACK INTO THEIR OS FOR THE BUSINESS AND POWER USER

  • Best QT export option for laptop presentation

    Hi there,
    I am experimenting with exporting options in hopes to get the highest quality output for a presentation I created in FCE2. This file is 1 hr/20 min. long. (The first hour is a looped slideshow). The graphics and photos used in this were all at square pixel value, 720x540. And again, the final product will be shown from a laptop...
    When I export the entire sequence from FCE, do I do a self-contained movie or not? What are the best settings I can select in QT Pro? SHould I change the compressor settings to "Best" or stick with the default settings?
    I really appreciate any feedback. Thank you!
    Karen

    Thanks Tom,
    I'll give that a try. I am currently exporting the second segment of the video using the same method i listed earlier. (simply because it worked and i MUST have it done tonight). After it is finished, I plan to do the whole thing in ONE CHUNK using the settings you've given me - as long as I don't have further issues with that "render file."
    So I am just curious, will there be any difference between these two types of export methods?
    1- Export from FCE Quicktime Movie, self-contained, to desktop. Open in QT. Export using your dimensions of 640x480, "best quality."
    VS.
    2- Export using QT conversion with the above dimensions.
    Thanks! This has been such a learning experience for me. I'm so glad to be at the final phase! Just keeping my fingers crossed that this export goes well. You've been such a great help, thank you.

  • UK RSS Support

    I am going to post my experiences thus far, as they may be helpful to some other UK Macbook owners with RSS.
    My Macbook started randomly shutting down about 10 days ago. The problem was bad some days (repeated crashes in a short space of time) and on other days the Macbook worked almost normally, with maybe just the odd shutdown. Regardless, it made me frustrated and I needed it fixed.
    I rang Apple. I ordered the Macbook in May and it was delivered in early June, so my 90 days of free AppleCare had expired. The guy I rang said he wasn't able to offer any support unless I paid a £35 deposit, refundable if the problem was indeed a hardware fault. Quite frankly, I found this quite patronising as it is clear this is an increasingly known fault. I thanked him for his time and that was the end of the phone call.
    The nearest Apple Store is 2 hours drive away. However, having looked here, http://www.apple.com/uk/buy/ I found a shop called KRCS nearby. I rang them and they said they would repair any hardware fault under warrenty and without any deposit nonsense. I took it in yesterday, and true to form, my Macbook shutdown randomly within minutes of the guy in the shop booting it up.
    If I don't get the Macbook back within 2 weeks, I get £10 off any Apple product.
    Will write the outcome of the service at a later date. Hopefully the reply will be written from my Macbook, and not from my self built XP desktop!

    what product do you have or need support with as that alters what or where to contact!
