Johnboy651,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Don't move or delete anything until you've used Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant to transfer your old data and settings over to the new iMac!
There are two ways you caan go, depending on whether you ever used your computer for financial record keeping and the like and how serious you'd consider any effort by fiture owners to access anything off the eMac.
The most time-consuming but safest method is to erase the hard drive, using the zero all data option, then reinstall OS X and restore the included applications. You may then create a new admin user account and use that to check Software Update to apply OS, security, and application updates; if you have broadband internet access and your buyer has a dialup account, they'll thank you for that. Your post doesn't note the OS version on the eMac; you can search the Knowledge Base via the "Advanced Search" link at the top of the Discussions pages for e.g. "erase and install 10.2" for references on how to reinstall and restore software (the details will depend on the OS and optical drive type of the eMac).
A less secure method is to just eliminate your user account while leaveing everything else behind; that may appeal to you if you never had anything particularly sensitive on the computer or if you're selling to a close friend or family member and want them to have access to some part of the files you've collected or created.
Move anything in the ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ path that you want left behind to the ~/Users/ Shared folder. Note that music you ripped from CDs into iTunes remains under the original copyright holder's rights and should be removed unless you're selling your CDs along with the computer. If your have music from ther iTunes Music Store, deauthorize the eMac before selling it.
Create a new administrative user account on the eMac and log on to that. Don't set up any e-mail or online accounts for the new user --- you don't want to leave any trace of your old accounts and passwords behind. Check that files you want left behind are accessible in the Shared folder. Switch back and forth between accounts until you have things arranged to your satisfaction. Test-run a couple of programs to make sure they work. You can then delete your original user account from the ~/Users folder. Select Secure Empty Trash (if you're running 10.3 or later). Double-check that System Preferences/ Network doesn't contain any personal info about your ISP account if you're using PPPoE.
Applications originally included with the Mac or freeware downloads can be left alone, as can commercial and shareware software to which you're transferring the license. Paid programs you migrate to your next computer should be removed by dragging the program to the Trash and emptying it. You can further elimiante the paid programs's preferences and support files (in Library/ Application Support and Library/ Preferences) if you want to be really complete.
Either way, it's helpful to make sure you include all the discs that came with the eMac when you sell it. That will help your buyer if he/she ever needs to run Disk Utility from the OS X Install disk or the like.

  • License Question: Selling previous upgrade to buy new FCS upgrade.

I'm interested in selling my previous upgrade copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and purchasing the upgrade for Final Cut Studio 3.
Final Cut Studio 2 is an upgrade version. I already own FCP1, which I used as the base for the FCS2 upgrade. I want to sell the FCS2 upgrade, but not my copy of FCP1 (since I want to use this for my new upgrade version).
So, what I'd like to do is the following:
    - Sell Final Cut Studio 2, but retain ownership of FCP 1 (that I've had for years)
    - Buy Final Cut Studio 3, and upgrade from FCP1
What gives me pause is the message in the SLA that states:
Updates: If an Apple Software update completely replaces (full install) a previously licensed version of the Apple Software, you may not use both versions of the Apple Software at the same time nor may you transfer them separately. NFR (Not for Resale) Copies: Notwithstanding other sections of this License, A
I'm not quite sure how to read that. While I definitely see an issue with someone upgrading to Final Cut Studio, and then selling the software used as the base of that upgrade, what I'm doing is actually the opposite. (Selling the upgrade software, and keeping my original FCP Version 1 license so I can use it for a newer upgrade).
Is there someone in Apple legal I can contact about this?
    Thoughs?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

  • IPhoto/eMac upgrade

I have an eMac that I am going to use to display photos only. It runs on OS 10.3.9 and operates quite nicely. I use iPhoto all the time on several of my other macs and like it just fine. The original software that came with the eMac has iPhoto 4. I would like to upgrade iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 5 to get the searching capabilities.
I owned a Mac Mini that the mother board failed on and replaced it with a new mac mini with Snow Leopard. It is a great replacement. I would like to use iPhoto 5 from that set of install discs (from dead mac mini) but it will not install onto the eMac. I have erased the disc on the eMac and tried to load the Mac Mini software but it tells me that “the software cannot be installed on that machine”.
The dead Mac Mini system is 10.4.2 . Is 10.4 not compatible with the eMac or can someone give me some guidance on how to use the software that I purchased (from dead Mac Mini) but do not have a computer for?
If I can’t use the dead Mac Mini software disc to get iPhoto 5, does anyone know how I can get iPhoto 5? I do not want to upgrade the system unless it can use the 10.4 from the dead Mac Mini. I thought that after I’d wiped the eMac clean I would be able to install the dead Mac Mini system & software.
    Any thoughts would be helpful

Purchase and install iLife 05. The Mac mini's original disks won't install onto other Macs.

  • Emac upgrade: What's the easiest way to upgrade from OS 10.2.8 to OS 10.3?

I just gave my Emac to my parents...I want to upgrade from OS 10.2.8 to OS 10.3 and continue upgrading so the computer is as current as it can be. What is recommended? Downloading OS 10.3 from Mac downloads and progressing through upgrades until I hit OS 10.5 or is there an easier way? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Right now, I can't upgrade at all until the system gets OS 10.3. At least, that's what the downloads page is telling me.
    Thanks for your time...Steeler58

The version of Mac OS X 10.2 you have, 10.2.8, is the highest you can get for free. You cannot download Mac OS X 10.3; that has always been something you would have to pay for. The same applies to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard); each would be a separate purchase at retail. If it were me and my machine, I'd skip 10.3 and find a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. You may still be able to purchase 10.4 from the Apple Store if you call them (it is not available for order from the Apple Store via the Web). You may also be able to find a copy through one of the computer dealers that specializes in discontinued software or through eBay. You must get the full retail version; a system installer disk intended for some other model of Mac will usually not work and is not legally licensed for separate sale and use on other systems.
Note that the normal 10.4 installer only came on DVD - CDs were only available via special order - so your eMac will need to have a DVD-capable drive, either a Combo drive or a SuperDrive.

  • Rules on selling my upgraded iPhone 5S and sticking with my iPhone 5?

I just upgraded to an iPhone 5S and considering there are minimal differences between the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5 that I am not too concerned about, I was thinking of selling the 5S online and sticking with the iPhone 5. My question: when I get my iPhone 5S, do I have to activate it on my account with my number to accept the terms of the new contract AND THEN switch the device back to the iPhone 5 allowing the 5S to be de-activated and ready for someone else to activate it on their Verizon account? I want to make sure there are no strict rules with this like the phone HAS to be activate on my account for a certain period of time before being de-activated.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

        Hello Craftymom22,
It sounds like you have a plan set and your just waiting for the icing on the cake.
The one concern that I do have is that when ordering the device. The device is typically ordered under your mobile number. Therefore when going through the activation instructions the device will attempt to default activate under your line.
In this situation, it is best to have the MEID and SIM card available for the future user so that it does not try to activate to your account when the next user gets the phone.

  • Emac upgrading to Tiger

I have a friends emac that she didn't use for a very long time (probably 2 years) and wanted to get back on the internet with it but when she did it would not let you get past the first page. So I thought that I would upgrade her system with Tiger since she was running on 10.2. Well I had to totally reinstall OS X cause she forgot her password. Then I installed Tiger. It was working sorta fine until I started updating Tiger. First it would not install the combo update and then after that it would not open any applications, finally I restarted it and it won't go past the grey apple page. I am by far means not a technican I just thought I could help an old friend. Please help

The Install CD is your best tool in this case. It is bootable, and contains a few utilities that can help.
Boot from the Install CD, but do not install. look on the Installer menu \[10.3 and earlier] or the Utilities Menu \{10.4 and later] for Disk Utility. Choose that and follow the directions in the panel, i.e., select the Hard Drive, and choose Repair. If any problems are seen, run it again until it comes clean or gets stuck. (You can also run "Repair Permissions" but it does not do a thorough job when run off the CD.)
\[There is also a "Reset Password" utility on the Installer menu, for the next time someone forgets the password.]
Then see if the Hard drive will boot up. If it does, run Disk Utility from the hard drive. This time, you want "Repair permissions" to complete the job.

  • EMac upgrading OSX

    I have a G4 eMac, 60GB, 512MB, 8000mHz.
It has 10.3.9 on it and I want to upgrade it to like Tiger or Leopard, due to the fact that this older OS wont support downloads of newer Flash Players, and iTunes as example.
But the issue is on this computer I have some programs like FinalCutPro, and Photoshop. The computer was used and did not come with installation discs for these programs among others on it. So when I upgrade the OS what happens to these programs? Do they stay on or does the computer get wiped clean of everything like my install of vista on my laptop...

When I upgraded from Panther 10.3 to Tiger 10.4.11, all of my major applications still worked. A few minor apps need a free update. So Tiger should be safe to upgrade to. Don't know about Leopard.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
*Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.* All of your apps, passwords, internet settings will be preserved. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Planning Emac Upgrade, Is this Logical

I have an emac G4 1.25GHz with 768MB ram running OSX 10.3.9 and I am needing to upgrade this for a number of reasons. It is running somewhat sluggish and there is no more support for Itunes and Quick Time. My plans are to upgrade the Ram to 2GB, add an external hard drive and upgrade the Operating system to either Tiger or Leopard.
    1. Will this work?
    2. Is it logical to do so or would it make more sense to just buy a new system?

to answer both of your question:
    1. yes, even leopard, but then you probably want indeed 2GB of RAM, 1GB is enough to run Leopard (or even 512MB) but using 2GB will make it faster and it's useful since you probably also want some program that are not part of Mac OS X.
me personally, I'm using a eMac Education special edition.
wich has a 1,0Ghz PowerPC G4, I upgraded it to 2GB of ram.
got a copy of Leopard from MacMe (groningen, netherland), and installed that.
I didn't get a external HD, may do so someday.
right now, I can do mostly everything I want on it.
just got a Mini-VGA to VGA adapter and now using a nice 22 inch wide screen CHIMEI CMV223D display with it.
also connected a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000. and I can use it wonderfully.
but keep in mind that a emac may take a bit longer to start apps then a new iMac.
once started most run nicely though.
and it can also run iLife.
    with exception of two parts:
GarageBand Learn-To-Play (requires a dual-core intel processor) but only Learn to play won't work, further GarageBand will work fine, slower then on a new mac, but perfectly usable.
and iMovie, which needs at least a 1.9Ghz G5.
it can also run iWork, with no exceptions.
    as for 2.
that is hard to answer, what one will find logical someone else may not,
it will work fine, but a new system will be faster, still, it will be cheaper to upgrade it.
it will use a bit more power though, since it has a CRT screen.
I use a eMac, and I'm perfectly happy with it.
and yours has a slightly faster processor then mine.
it's up to you, you'll be the one using it.
but if you need to use windows, you should get a new one though.
there are some virtual computers that will make a virtual, intel, processor.
like Q (mac os x port of Qemu) but those are really slow.
but if not, it should be fine.
as long as you don't mind that it's a bit slower.
    also, as for memory.
you can go to a PC store and get PC2700 DDR1 memory
mine has two PC3200, you can use those, but then they do need to be backwards compatible with PC2700, since the emac simply won't work faster then that.

  • Emac upgrade

How do I upgrade SAFARI 1.3.2...My emac is 10.3.9 and has been upgraded. What do I need to do to get an upgrade that will open my new mobile me.... At the apple store I was told to get the new operating system....That seems for the $$ like maybe just replacing the emac. I bought this when they first came out so it is old, I guess. I am a senior big time....

Safari 1.3.2 is the highest version that will run under 10.3.9. The latest version of Camino ( http://caminobrowser.org ) will work with Panther but I don't know how that affects MobileMe. If your eMac is 700 or 800mHz (go to "About this Mac..." under the Apple menu to find out), Tiger 10.4.11 is the highest OS you can run. If it's 1.0G or faster, you can run Leopard. You may need to add RAM--you need to specify how much you now have--to run the newer systems. Should be no less than 512MB for either, but more is better.
The other potential hang-up with upgrading the OS is that Tiger and Leopard come on DVD disks, not CDs. If you do not have a DVD reader, you have to take extra and more complicated steps to get the OS upgraded.
If you post your processor speed, how much RAM is installed, and whetehr or not your optical drive can read DVDs, maybe others will have more ideas.

  • Selling an upgrade CS5

Back in November of 2012, I bought CS5 Upgrade from Overstock with the understanding that it could be upgraded from my old CS2 Educational Version. After buying it, I found it couldn't be activated from CS2! I contacted Adobe, and they allowed the software to be unlocked.
Fast forward to April of this year.
I contacted Adobe to ask if I could sell my CS5 upgrade on Ebay. They told me that I could, but I'd have to give my previous CS2 software serial in order to use it. The also told me that I could transfer the license.
I sold it on Ebay, and we have been trying to transfer my license to the buyer. After weeks of " chats " and filling out the forms, I learned that I COULDN'T transfer the license because CS5 is tied to an Academic version!!
Also, I found out that the buyer has no other previous version except the CS2 that I gave him. He not only can't get my license, but now he might not be able to use the software!
I'm very upset about the bogus advice I got from Ebay BEFORE I sold it. If I knew all of this, I wouldn't have sold it to the buyer and told him he can use it and get the license!
Is there anything that can be done so he can use and register his software?

No and no. Academic versions not being sellable is actually quite clearly spelled out in the respective EULAs, so you could have known it. Feel free to contact support again and beg them on your knees, but if they're not having a good day and feel generous there is nothing you can do.

  • Selling an upgrade version?

I have an upgrade version of PS CS3 for Windows that I'm having trouble getting to work on my macbook under parallels/windows, so I'd like to sell it to help finance purchasing the current version for Mac.  It's an upgrade from a registered version of PS7.  Can I do that and transfer the serial number to the purchaser?

    Yes.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/order-product-platform-language-swap.htm l
You must sell CS3 and all prior versions (back to PS7 if that's the first full version you bought) since they're all on the same license.

  • Is Adobe still selling upgrades for CS1 to CS4?

I think I may have waited too long to upgrade from CS (design standard) to CS4. I can't afford to pay the full price for CS5, and I think I could survive a few years with CS4. Is Adobe still selling the upgrades? I can't seem to find them on their site. Or do I have to search on eBay or Amazon? I am always a bit worried that I am purchasing something illegal on those sites...

Here's one reason I went for it:

  • Continual problems with my emac, is it time to upgrade?

I have had my emac for 5 years. First 4 years were great but in the last year I have had performance problems. I took it to my local mac store and had them upgrade to Tiger which helped with some applications but still slow. My superdrive first started to scratch some dvds, later it wouldn't burn dvds at all and now the drive door won't even open. Are these all problems that can be easily fixed?
I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade to a new imac since it has been 5 years. If so, any advice in terms of processor, memory, etc. on a new 20" imac?
    Appreciate any help

Internal optical drive replacement is covered in the Apple eMac Upgrade Guide. It's easier to just use an external optical drive, through (e.g., something like this).
Have you tried running a CD lens cleaner through the internal optical drive a couple of times? Sometimes something that simple works.
You may not be aware that Tiger 10.4 and later introduced a 'feature' whereby a quick press of the optical draw open key no longer suffices; you have to keep the key held down for a good one to two seconds. (Maybe there was a rash of complaints about the optical drawer opening unexpectedly as people brushed the key while aiming for the sound control keys.)
How much free space is there on the hard drive? If there's less than 1GB, the Mac will be running into problems as it runs out of room for the Unix scratch and swap files. If the hard drive fills entirely, a Unix-based computer (which includes OS X) won't boot at all except into single-user mode. Try to keep 5GB or so minimumm free space (that allows you to do an Archive and Install if necessary). A ballpark figure of 10% of the hard drive free is eaasier to remember and allows more of a safety margin.
When the store upgraded to Tiger, did you get the OS X Install disc? Do you have any pre-Tiger disk maintenance or repair utilities, including OnyX or the pre-Tiger Disk Utiltiy? Running an earlier utility could cause problems; see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes.

  • Help me choose a model and upgrades please.

    Hi guys,
Basically I am stuck on a air few things with deciding what models along with upgrades. I am stuck between getting the MBP 15 inch 2.6GHz or the Retina 15 inch 2.3GHz. For starters I would say I want to use the MBP for general stuff like office and more complex programs like SSPS, surfing the net downloading movies and music and playing games like Rome total War amongst many other games etc. However, I think I have read the Retina display does not even work with all games?
Due to the relative low price I'm sure I will upgrade to 16 GB worth of RAM  If get the Retina MBP as you can't upgrade them further down the line (*****). I beleve with the Retina MBP there is no disk drive, so i can't directly insert DVD's or Burn files onto disks etc, but this can be overcome by buying the Apple USB Super Drive, am I correct?
The Retina display only has 256 GB flash storage and that is kinda of low, will it more then enough for what I want to use the MBP for? What would that flash storage not be enough for?
If I get the normal 15 inch 2.6Hz MBP then I will upgrade the screen Hi-res glossy widescreen display as I like to play games and watch movies. Is it worth upgrading the hardrive the improve seed, efficientcy and power performance?
Overall what model would you say best suites my needs thanks?

Actually I have been doing further research and I personally would either go with the 2.6GHz NON RETINA MBP or cough up the cash and go all out on a 2.6GHz RETINA MBP and upgrade the RAM to 16GB  and upgrade to 768GB Flash storage, I am a student as well so will get a discount which will help.
My fears are that if I get the Retina model I will not be able to upgrade it even further, I want to keep the computer for at least a good 5 years, during those 5 to 8 years will the current upgrades be enough to keep up with the top games and programs etc? Also I have read that repairing the Retina display model is very diffcult  and it can malfunction commonly, so I am guessing I should get apple care on top of it just to be sure with this particular model?
I am assuming that they they will bring out the new models out next year and all the chinks and bugs of the current Retina model will be fixed so to speak, of which I have read there is a few... Would it be worth buying the NON RETINA MBP and then selling and upgrading to an improved RETINA MBP model next year?
Finally if i back up my files on a hardrive would I have to use the USP SUPER DRIVE to install files onto the RETINA MBP or can i directly do this without the USP SUPERDRIVE?
    Thanks

  • Emac Died, NEED HELP!!!

Hi, I have had an emac for over 3 and half years now. Just an hour ago, it died on me. I wasn't at my computer, but near it. It clicked off and was followed by a burning smell, no smoke. A friend of mine said the power supply may have died, but he is not sure. All I know is that it won't turn on and that there is a nasty smell. Does anyone have any idea what happened, or what I should do? I tried to call mac support but it's after hours. Thanks.

As cosmic hobo has already noted, a burning wire insulation smell is beyond any simple fix. You can check any nearby Apple Store locations or use the Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and/or Apple: Find Service to find a repair shop that can give you an estimate. Ask them to check if the hard drive is readable as well as checking the source of the burning.
Should the damage not be cost-effective to repair, if the hard drive is readable you can recover it's contents by removing the drive (either have the repair shop do so for you, or use the disassembly instructions in Apple eMac Upgrade Guide) and place the drive in an external enclosure to use with whatever replacdes the eMac (see PT: HD drive replacement tips).
Especially if the problem can be traced to a power surge, you'll want to look at higher-quality surge protectors (Tripp Lite Isobar models are the reference standard at the lab where I work) or an Uninterruptable Power Supply (e.g., BackUPS models from APC). Low-end surge protectors are essentially one-shot things are are near worthless at actually protecting from power glitches over a long period of time (the status LEDs on such surge outlets are meaningless).
p.s. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
