Selling my eMac 700

Hi. I have a eMac (specs at bottom) in very good condition. It has a few problems cosmetically, but it's an excellent machine. If I erase the drive, reinstall the OS (Mac OS X 10.4), and don't go through the setup process, how much do you think I could sell it for. I'm not sure how much is too much or too less.
Keep in mind that...
It has a 40GB hard drive
     2GB RAM
     700mhz G4 processor
     Airport Express
     Fresh install of Tiger
     Pro Keyboard
     eMac Swivel Stand
All responses are appreciated!!!

Why don't you open an Apple Store in Columbia?  We sure as heck could use one.

  • Screen spanning emac 700 MHz

    Hello all,
I presume this is a quite stupid question, but here goes; is it possible to do screen spanning with a 700 MHz eMac? I've got a Iiyama Vision Mater Pro 455 here - and I'd like to span the screen instead of mirror it completely. That way I can edit much more easily with FCP.
Is there any way to do this through software? (I tried Screen Spanning Doctor, but they've excluded the 700 MHz) Or do I need to upgrade the hardware - if so, what hardware?
    Thanks a bunch everybody!
    eMac 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    it doesn't work with a 700 MHz.
So I guess if it isn't possible I need to upgrade the hardware. Is this possible?
Sorry, I missed that you'd already tried it; apologies. But if Screen Spanning Doctor doesn't work, you may be out of luck. It's not possible to upgrade the video chip in your eMac, and I don't think a later-model eMac logic board would fit in your eMac's case, though I can't say for sure. Even if it is possible, it's probably not going to be cost-effective. Logic boards for 1GHz eMacs are going for over $300.00 US on the sites I've found that carry them, and you could probably buy an entire 1Ghz eMac for not much more, particularly if you sell yours and apply the proceed toward the purchase of the later-model unit.

  • Upgrading Emac 700

Hi guys i wanted to upgrade my Emac 700 motherboard, processor etc. Can it be done and where? I live in the UK. Thanks. Lee

The main logic board (including the processor) cannot be upgraded. The hard drive, RAM, and certain other things can, but it's not easy, nor cheap, nor even fun.
I'd strongly urge you to consdier a newer Mac. A refurbished Mac Mini is about the cheapest route, if budget is an issue.

  • EMac 700 fan CFM?

I'm planning on replacing the case fan in my eMac 700.
I've searched this forum and googled everywhere for information on how much air the stock fan pushes, what its CFM is.
Does anyone know and if so, would you tell me, please?
    Many thanks.

Actually, because it has a relatively low 2800 rpm rotational speed for a unit its size, it only pushes 2.2 cubic feet per minute.
But matching it is impossible. While the basic fan is an NMB Technologies 4710KL-04W unit, it is housed in a custom shroud. The fan blades and motor are integrated into this housing, and cannot be removed without destroying it. The entire fan and shroud assembly, with gaskets, is easily removable from the remainder of the AC inlet and filter frame.
This is not an off-the-shelf item, and the fan and AC inlet assembly for the nVidia graphics driven eMac product line is no longer available from Apple. When it was, users would likely have paid about $ 59.00 for it. Expensive for a fan alone, but in line with the cost of similar assemblies. The later 922-5866 assembly for ATI graphics driven models, which is reasonably similar but not interchangeable, is still available.
If you are interested in a drop in replacement for your original fan alone, write to me at the address listed in my Public Profile.

  • Networking Tigerized eMac 700 MHz and PM 7200 OS7.6.1 - need help!

    Hello,
I've looked on the boards and hit up Google but to no avail so I thought I'd try to ask in this forum for the help I need in sorting out my problem.
I have an eMac 700MHz, and am trying to connect my old (but functioning) PowerMac 7200. I want to back up a few bits of data and then format the HDD and reinstall an OS on it before selling/tossing it.
I tried to do this using an Ethernet cable. On the eMac in the Network view, I'd get a greyed out image of the PM, but it tells me that I can't get anywhere as there is an incompatibility in Apple Talk versions being used.
The PowerMac is old and only has 16MB of RAM. I'm not keen to buy a copy of OS8+ just to transfer less than a CD-R's worth of old mail and docs. Would that it had USB, I'd plug in a thumb drive or my iPod Shuffle.
The HDD is also pretty full - maybe 40MB of the 500MB is free. I tried to use a CD-R in the drive that I'd burnt on the eMac, but the PM wouldn't recognize it saying that the thing was unreadable. Have standards changed that much?
What's frustrating about this is I bought it second-hand from an Apple shop in '99, but they didn't give me any OS discs. Back then I was a tad more naive about computers and such. Now I wonder how they got away with it, and if any of the software I might have otherwise received could have helped me.
Any assistance that can be provided - any at all! - would be most welcome. I'm trying to tidy up the house here since a cohabiting family member has become unwell, and it'd free up space I could use for other things.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hoopy

No need to change the name of the OS 9 System Folder since the folder order list doesn't matter. It sounds as if you need to re-bless the OS 9 System Folder, per the instructions under No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder in Classic doesn't start, Mac OS 9 not installed or recognized.
You may also find OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install useful. Some posters have noted problems with natively booting OS 9 after upgrading to Tiger, although I had no problems a while back when I booted my office Quicksilver G4 in OS 9 to try to get HP all-in-one drivers installed for use in Classic.
Cavet: when the 700 MHz eMac shipped, it was formatted to be a dual boot machine. If at any time since then you reformatted the hard drive using the OS X Install disc, there's a gotcha: OS X does not by default include the OS 9 boot driver. That has to explicitly enabled. If the OS 9 drivers are missing, I'm not aware of any way to reinstall the OS 9 drivers without having to reformat the hard drive, although someone in the OS 9 or Classic forums may be better able to help.

  • Any way to add USB 2 to eMac 700 combo?

iPod died and have been offered a 5G one as replacement but relies on USB 2 - I only have Firewire. Any ideas? I plan to upgrade to new Mac in the Autumn but in no position to do so yet so upgrading eMac would be perferable - if possible...

    Can't be done.
I would just try to stick it out with USB1 until next fall if I were you. Yes, compared to firewire, it is painfully slow but it depends on how much data you really want to transfer at any given time. My daughter for example has her music on an old beige G3 with USB1.1 only and she synchronizes her iPod mini without problems. Yes, it does take as much as a couple of minutes PER SONG to update but how often do you really transfer hundreds of songs in one shot? If you do, set it up over night.

  • EMac G4 700 speakers working intermittently

Today the speakers on my eMac 700 are working fine, but for most of this week, an hour or two after awaking from sleep overnight, they produced no sound. The iSub worked fine and I could get full sound through headphones. Naturally, I'm delighted to have sound again—I've been running iTunes at strength for the past five and half hours—but I'd like to know what the problem was; I anticipate that it will occur again.

    Hello Keith,
    Welcome To Apple Discussions!
If passable I would take it into a Apple repair shop and have them have a look at this problem you are having.

  • Selling emac/upgrade

I am selling my emac soon and getting an imac how do I get rid of my personal details,I want to leave the music on as well as other programs,I want to leave it as it is now just remove the personal stuff.
    Thanks
    John

    Johnboy651,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Don't move or delete anything until you've used Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant to transfer your old data and settings over to the new iMac!
There are two ways you caan go, depending on whether you ever used your computer for financial record keeping and the like and how serious you'd consider any effort by fiture owners to access anything off the eMac.
The most time-consuming but safest method is to erase the hard drive, using the zero all data option, then reinstall OS X and restore the included applications. You may then create a new admin user account and use that to check Software Update to apply OS, security, and application updates; if you have broadband internet access and your buyer has a dialup account, they'll thank you for that. Your post doesn't note the OS version on the eMac; you can search the Knowledge Base via the "Advanced Search" link at the top of the Discussions pages for e.g. "erase and install 10.2" for references on how to reinstall and restore software (the details will depend on the OS and optical drive type of the eMac).
A less secure method is to just eliminate your user account while leaveing everything else behind; that may appeal to you if you never had anything particularly sensitive on the computer or if you're selling to a close friend or family member and want them to have access to some part of the files you've collected or created.
Move anything in the ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ path that you want left behind to the ~/Users/ Shared folder. Note that music you ripped from CDs into iTunes remains under the original copyright holder's rights and should be removed unless you're selling your CDs along with the computer. If your have music from ther iTunes Music Store, deauthorize the eMac before selling it.
Create a new administrative user account on the eMac and log on to that. Don't set up any e-mail or online accounts for the new user --- you don't want to leave any trace of your old accounts and passwords behind. Check that files you want left behind are accessible in the Shared folder. Switch back and forth between accounts until you have things arranged to your satisfaction. Test-run a couple of programs to make sure they work. You can then delete your original user account from the ~/Users folder. Select Secure Empty Trash (if you're running 10.3 or later). Double-check that System Preferences/ Network doesn't contain any personal info about your ISP account if you're using PPPoE.
Applications originally included with the Mac or freeware downloads can be left alone, as can commercial and shareware software to which you're transferring the license. Paid programs you migrate to your next computer should be removed by dragging the program to the Trash and emptying it. You can further elimiante the paid programs's preferences and support files (in Library/ Application Support and Library/ Preferences) if you want to be really complete.
Either way, it's helpful to make sure you include all the discs that came with the eMac when you sell it. That will help your buyer if he/she ever needs to run Disk Utility from the OS X Install disk or the like.

  • Using Video Adapter with eMac

I've searched all over and cannot find any information on this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to send video from my eMac to my TV. I purchased the Apple Video Adapter and an RCA cable. I have the adapter plugged into the computer, and the cable plugged into the adapter and the TV. I restarted the computer. The TV (on its video setting) shows static with the adapter plugged in; if I take it out, it goes black, so clearly some signal is passing through. However, I cannot figure out how to get the eMac to recognize the new "display".
The discussions on the subject mention using a "detect display" fuction. I don't see anything called "detect display" in the display preferences. I do have it set to show the displays in the menu bar, and the drop-down menu only shows the eMac and its resolutions. The preferences, also, only gives me the info for the eMac.
Am I missing something? Is there a setting I need to change? Should I assume the adapter is defective (I gather this has happened to others)?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    eMac 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I don't think the problem is at the TV's end, as it's clearly getting some sort of signal on the video setting I'm using (there's static when it's connected to the computer, and nothing when it's not). The problem is that the computer doesn't see that it's connected to another display.
Something I realized, comparing computers (we also have a Mini)--the Mini's display preferences window has a "detect displays" button that the eMac's doesn't. They're both running 10.4.3. Any ideas (anyone?) why the eMac's missing it?
    Thanks again!

  • I want to connect an old eMac to an LCD TV.

Hi, all. Thanks for reading this.
I visited my parents and found my old eMac from 9 million years (and Macs) ago. It's the 700 MHz Power PC G4 model.
I would like to connect it to my LCD TV. The TV has PC inputs (VGA) and I have the Apple mini VGA adapter and a VGA cable that I know works. I have it connected now, but the TV says "Not Supported." The TV works fine connected to my MacBook Pro and other PCs. I know that the eMac in question is a bit old- but it's a Mac!
I just want what's on the computer to display on my LCD. I'm not terribly concerned with screen resolution or whether or not I can use "screen spanning."
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for reading!
    -Vincent.

The eMac allows only display mirroring, so what goes to an external will be limited to the res on the eMac, and with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The video chipset in that eMac is pretty dated---that might be where the trouble lies.
There are other factors like color depth and refresh rate. The TV will have to be able to work with the limited options that the eMac video hardware offers. I would start by setting the res to 1280 X 960 (the largest I have on our eMac 700) and millions of colors. See if you are offered different refresh rates. If so, try different ones
Something more basic: Have the TV connected and ON when you start the eMac. That helps the compuer find the second display. Also look on the TVs options to see if there is a setting for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Beyond that, I'm out of ideas!

  • EMac looking for wireless hook up, some confusion

I have an eMac 700 with a bus of 100. So I have to use the original airport card. Pricey. Apple mentioned using a 3rd party wireless card. Could this be it ?
Wireless Pre-N Desktop Network Card - Belkin $129
Then could i use an airport Exstreem? Apple said I would need additional software. What software? Would I have to pay for it?

Dana,No software upgrade is going to help yet and Airport Extreme (802.11g - 54MBps) doesn't work in the eMac 700.
You either need the Airport 'original' (802.11b - 11MBps) or a USB1 WiFi adaptor. The card you named is a 'PCI' card. The eMac does have a PCI expansion slot (even though you may see it listed in Apple System Profiler!).
The 'original' Apple Airport card are getting expensive as Apple don't sell them anymore so they are going for silly prices!
You need a USB WiFi adaptor like this. Software should be included.
(The eMac 700 only has USB1 so you can't use the USB2 based 802.11g adaptors out there)
Once you have this you can connect to your wireless network.

  • Adding wireless laptop to eMac cable modem

My eMac 700 mhz is connected to a cable modem via ethernet. I want to add a wireless laptop also using the cable modem so I can use the laptop anywhere, without having to add Airport on the eMac also. How can this be done?

You can do this with a wireless router - any model sold by your local computer shop will do, and should cost you around $30-60. At home:
    - connect the cable modem to the router's WAN or "internet" port
    - connect the eMac to one of the router's LAN ports
    - your new laptop will of course connect wirelessly
All this can also be done exactly as I described with an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (costs $199). For that premium price you get a device that is arguably easier to set up for Mac users, and you get a built in USB port that can be used to share a connected printer between both the eMac and the laptop.
