Selling my MAC, should I delete my user profile or completely reset?

Hello all,
selling my MacBook Pro to my friend. What's the best thing to do to "clean" my MacBook for him? Delete my user or "restore" mac?
I have "lion" installed so Im pretty sure it wont restore to that, probably the old operating system it had before I installed Lion.
Thoughts?

As has been explained to me, you cannot sell a pre-Lion-originally system with your-purchased Lion on it.  You need to retore to the original OS disks and let the new user buy the upgrades.  SL I think is transferrable as an OS-upgrade if the disks travel with it, but not Lion.
Thanks. I was kind of thinking it might be like that but wasn't sure since it really represents a reversal in how things used to operate. Of course somebody stands to a big advantage since now if, say a Mac makes its way through 3 owners, all 3 have to buy the Lion upgrade. Of course you also now cannot sell an unwanted OS anymore.  And if Apple continues its pattern of no longer selling anything but the last 2 OS versions, all those Macs out there will useless a couple of years down the road since if somebody offered me Michael Drabousky1's Mac 3 years from now and I can no longer get Lion for it, I won't buy it.  Goodie, goodie (for somebody), all those old Macs will soon be unusable and everybody will have to buy more new hardware!

  • Files missing from desktop after deleting a user profile that was created on there.

I downloaded and installed firefox and it asked me to create a user profile, but it could not save in the default location. I chose to create the profile on the desktop as a test and that worked. However, after deleting that user profile, all of the items on my desktop were removed and cannot be located. The files are not in my trashbin and when I do a search, it says the file cannot be located. I have Windows 7.

You shouldn't create a profile and choose an existing folder.<br />
You should always specify an empty folder and if you didn't do that then you should never remove the files when you remove such a profile because all files in it will be removed and not just the files created by Firefox.

  • How To Properly Delete a User Profile on Windows 7 in a Domain environment

I have not been able to find an answer that matches the issue I'm facing. I had recently setup a laptop for a user and soon after, he was experiencing issues that I thought might be profile related. So, I did what always worked for me on prior versions of
Windows without any fuss or side affects.
Logged in under the local Administrator account, I went into: System Properties>User Profiles>Settings and removed the user profile from their. When I do that, I get an error message:
    Profile Error
Profile not deleted completely. Error - A required privilege is not held by the client
Ok, no problem I think. I just need to delete the user's profile directory under the users folder right? So I do this and figure when I try to log in again as the user that a new profile will be created. However, this is not what happens exactly. I login
with the user credentials and it logs in successfully. However, I get a pop saying:
You have been logged on with a temporary profile
You cannot access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off. To fix this, log off and try logging on later.
Please see the event log for details or contact your system administrator
So my question is; why did the profile not delete completely after both deleting the user profile under System Properties and after deleting the actual profile directory? What did I miss and what is the proper method of deleting a user profile completely
without running into these other issues?

    Hi Womprat,
According to your description, I understand that you want to delete user profile but display an error in Windows 7.
Please use other user (with administrator privileges) login this computer, then open Properties for Computer--->Advanced system setting--->Settings for User Profiles, then select the profile you want to delete.

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?

Take a look at Metalogix ControlPoint, which will compare user accounts on SharePoint to Active Directory and remove accounts that no longer exist in AD (or are disabled).

  • Hi, I have a Mac Book pro but my user profile is corrupt. I want to delete the profile but transfer all my documents to a new profile

    Hi
I have a Mac Book Pro
My Mac Account/User Profile is playing up with some programs (they fail to open etc)
I've created a new profile and all work OK
I need to remove my old profile but still access my Itunes and documents etc

How old is the MacBook Pro?  AirPlay is only supported on 2011 and newer models, due to the requirements it has in hardware for graphics acceleration.

  • I used the migration assistant to transfer files from my PC to my Mac but it recreated my user profile from the PC and I wanted to transfer the files to the new different user profile I've setup on the Mac. How can I transfer everything now?

I have an older Windows laptop and I am switching to a new MacBook Air. The main user on the Windows laptop is going to be different than the main user on the MacBook. I used the migration assistant to transfer data to the MacBook but it recreated the whole older profile on the new Mac when I just wanted to pull everything over into the new user profile I had already created on the new MacBook. How can I go about putting the data over into the new user profile and erasing the older other user profile it recreated? Would I erase the old user profile on the new Mac and start over with the migration assistant using some setting I missed that lets me pull the data over to the new main user on the MacBook? Or is there a way to rename the old user profile on the Mac to match what I want the new username/password to be somehow?
Or would it be best to back the data I really need from the old PC onto an external HD and then copy it over to the new Mac from the external HD?
Looking for advice on how to best go about this. On the old PC I had multiple profiles and it was awkward. On the new Mac I just want a single profile for the primary user and both users will just share the same user profile. I wasn't sure if the Migration Assistant only let you recreate entire profiles or if there was a way to just import data from the old PC's primary profile into the new Mac's new primary profile with some setting adjustment.
Data would be docs, pics, bookmarks, music. Fairly basic.
Thanks for any and all advice,
    -Crosscourier.

    Look in the /Users/ folder.

  • Unable to delete renamed User Profile

    Greetings!
I have been enjoying the nuances of Windows 8.1... right.  Anyway, I have Win8.1 64bit on this excellent HP SLimline PC.  Now I need some help with the OS.  I'm an avid Windows 7 user and like it very much. Of my four PCs this is the only one with 8.1 and and I'm having some learning curve experinces, of which this is one.
So, I've had this computer since July 2014 and am not having issues other than with account administration.  The problem is that the main administrative account (yes, I use two accounts, one for daily work and an admin account to manage the computer - life is more secure that way).
The admin account user name needed to be changed, so I did that.  One would think that changing the account name would automatically do that across the board in the filiing system.  In this case, not so.  Win8.1 created a new profile.
I'm not saying that the profile name didn't change for login purposes, it did and that looks fine.  However, in looking at the Users listed in File Explorer and also on the network, the old user profile still exists with all the rights and privileges of a normal administrator's profile.
I'm thinking this is not good for a couple of reasons; it causes confusion on the network. It also creates an un accessable set of files becuase there is no way to log in to clean it out.  And it may pose a security problem.
Also, note this has not degraded the function of the computer, yet it does show up sometimes in unpredictable circumstances.
What have I done to mitigate this issue?   Initally took a chance on system restore. I don't have a restore point going back far enough in time to correct this.  Next, I tried the old fashioned "highlight and delete" some of the content. Not such a good idea and the system won't let me anyway.  I am sure it needs to be done by the OS.  I'm not sure I want to edit the registry, just yet, but that may be my only choice.
So, I'm at a stand still for resolution. Not wanting to rebuild the computer, I need some way to scrub the user profiles and remove the one that is supposed to be deleted.
As always, thanks to anyone who can suggest a positive way to correct this issue. It's probably really easy ... maybe
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Welcome to HP support forums. I don't know why people hate Windows 8.1 (not 8), I love it and upgraded 80% of my laptops at home to Windows 8.1. My tablet uses Windows 8.1, my phone uses Windows 8.1 too. I only keep 2 machines run Windows 7 for support purpose.
Windows 7 also keeps old account(s), it creates new account profile when we create new user. Now back to your question, hope the following article helps.

(Basically change old account to normal user account (not Admin) and you can delete it).

  • Deleting local user profile on RDS without reboot

I need to delete the local profile for a user on our RDS server, because of a problem with this user.
Since the user was using RDS a few days ago, and RDS wasn’t rebooted since, I can’t delete the local profile. When I go to advanced system settings—user
profiles. The ‘delete’ option is greyed out.
I know that I can reboot the server then will be able to delete it, but since this server is serving many users, it means they all have to stop using it.
Is there a way to delete this user’s profile without rebooting the server?
    I use sever 2008 R2.
    Thanks

    Hi,
A local user profile is created the first time a user logs on to a computer. The profile is stored on the computer's local hard disk. Changes made to the local user
profile are specific to the user and to the computer on which the changes are made.
Windows security requires a user profile for each user account on a computer. The system automatically creates a local user profile for each user when the user logs
on to the computer for the first time. The system automatically maintains the settings for each user's work environment in a user profile on the local computer.
Windows Vista and later: User profiles are managed through the
User Accounts control (UAC) panel item.
    You can open the
Control Panel and click User Accounts, then click the Change User Account Control setting, dropped to the lowest turn off UAC. Press OK.
Then you can use administrator account try again to see whether you can delete the local user profile or not.

  • Palm Treo 700p How do I delete the User Profile and retain the data?

I want to sync my palm to my computer under a new profile.  I don't want to loose the data.  How do I delete or change the 700p profile so when I sync it thinks it is a different 700p?

In Palm Desktop, click the drop-down list of Hotsync IDs and select Edit Users.  Never done it myself, but if all you want to do is change your Hotsync ID's name, that should do it.

  • How to recover a deleted temp user profile folders?

I have a user that logged in to their machine a probably ignored the fact that it said it was loggin on a temporary profile. This user has been working off some documents and since it was a laptop only closed the lid instead of doing a shutdown...
A few days later, the users was prompted to reboot the computer to apply windows updates... after the reboot... I guess it logged it to the proper profile and now the user couldn't find documents that were created under my documents.
When I started to look at the laptop and looked at previous version of the C drive that was available, I noticed there was a C:\users\TEMP folder that was there before the reboot containing some of the files but I can't find this folder anymore.
By reading around I found that the temp folder is deleted when logging off? Not sure about that  but it sure looks that way.  Is there a way we can recover this temp folder... at least the my documents from it?

  • I deleted my user profile by accident now I can't open firefox, what do I do?

Basically I deleted the file in the Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Profiles folder and all other mozilla folders I could find thinking that I was going to completely remove and reinstall firefox on my computer (I was having issues with add-ons and wanted to see if I could un/reinstall ff to resolve the problem). Anyway I reinstalled ff and now when I try to open it, a message pops up that says "A copy of Firefox is already open. only one copy os Firefox can be open at a time." How do I get firefox back?

-> Go to Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files -> right-click '''firefox.exe''' -> go to '''Send to '''and click '''Desktop (Create shortcut)'''
-> Close Program Files folder -> Firefox shortcut will be on your Desktop now
Check and tell if its working.

  • Delete user profiles on multiple computers using ARD

    Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to delete user profiles on all of my remote clients (250+) using ARD.
Or if anyone knows about a script which can do this and some more.
This is what I am trying to do:
I wanted to delete any user profile which exceeds the size of 300 MBs or older than 1 month.
All of my clients are Intel Macs using newest version of ARD and Leopard.
    Thanks,

finding folders by size is pretty easy, modification date is a bit harder.
Here is a script that will list all user folders over 300mb.
I will leave it to you to test and modify to delete those folders.
    #!/bin/bash
#list all folders larger than 300MB in /Users
    #will exclude administrator and Shared
    for user in $(ls -1 /Users | grep -v "Shared" | grep -v "administrator")
    do
    homeSize=$(du -sm /Users/$user | cut -d"/" -f1)
    if [[$homeSize -gt 300]]; then
    echo "/Users/$user"
    fi
    done
