Selling my macbook pro and I cant delete data nor reset factory settings
OK I am selling my macbook pro late 2011
it has 16gb of RAM and 256 SSD
I have removed all the APPS manually backed up my data and deleted the remaining files in Trash can
Q1 Trash can only compresses the files how do I permanently delete this data
I am attempting to restore the MBP to factory settings I have attempted two way on start up CMD R and then with the start up disk I recieved with my iMac mid 2010 C
Q2 neither of these functions are working other than going into the Genius Bar what other options do I have?
Yes as posted above.
More then likely you are now running Mountain Lion and you CAN NOT Sell that Mac with Mountain Lion installed. Mountain Lion is TIED to YOUR Apple ID and is not transferable to a new owner.
That is why you have to use the Online Internet Recovery system as that will reinstall the Original Version of OS X that came Pre-Installed on it from the factory. Which would be Lion. That version. Lion is Tied to the Machine and not to any Apple ID. That is the way you have to sell or give it away, whichever you are doing.

when I attempt to install Mac OS X Lion I am told I cannot install this because a new version of is already installed? does this mean that mI need to go into Disk Utility and wipe the current files on teh disk?

Hi there. Was thinking of selling my MacBook pro and I ended up deleting random things. I accidentally changed the admin username to a few spaces using the spacebar button, but it seems to not be working. I still know the password. I also accidentally deleted the home folder location, so when I try to use Internet or open finder or anything it says "the home folder isn't located in the usual place. I also am unable to restart from the reboot using any of the cmd s or cmd c. I also don't have any of the disks. Please help. I don't care about files or info, the computer is essentially blank, I just can't access anything anymore
Sorry to say, No there isn't. Even IF you hadn't deleted, or still had, the Recovery HD partition from one of the Download only version of OS X, Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks, you can't sell or give your Mac to anyone with one of those version installed. Those versions are tied to the Apple ID of the person that downloaded and installed them.
You could sell it like that but the new owner would never be able to update or upgrade it without the original Apple ID that downloaded and installed any of those versions. Putting the newer owner between a Rock and a hard place.
You must restore it to the original version of OS X that came on it when it was new and the only way to do that is with the original system discs it came with or a replacement set of them. These discs are Machine, Model, Specific and when and if you do sell it they should be given to the new owner along with the system. -

I'm selling a MacBook Pro and want to reformat the hard drive
Hi
I'm selling my MacBook Pro late 2011 model and want to reformat the hard drive so that the new owner ca'nt recover any of my information.
Whats the best way to do this and to ensure that they won't ever be able to recover my personal data ?
Thanks in advance !
AndrewFirst of all, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5189?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In step 4, follow all the steps for OS X Mavericks but, after going to the Erase tab, select "Security Options" and choose one of the secure erase options. Note that a more secure option will take more time. Finally, reinstall OS X and turn off your MacBook Pro. -
I got a secondhand MacBook pro and deleted the content from the person before e.g photos and word document but I tryed to delete them all at the one time and now finder is going really slow and it won't let me restart the computer. Please help

if I were you, I'd just format and reinstall the whole system to clean off everything from the previous user. Even after you delete their pictures and files, there will be a ton of preference files, config stuff, etc. from them left on the machine.
Good call Collin. I would also zero the HD while I was starting over. -
I inadvertently downloaded MPlayerX into my Macbook Pro and wanted to remove it. I tried (1) jiggling the icon and there was no delete button, (2) dragging the icon to trash didn't work
1. Use free AdwareMedic to remove adware
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.
Once done, quit AdwareMedic.
or
Remove the adware manually by following the “HowTo” from Apple.

2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari.
Turn those on one by one and test. -
hi i hav a used macbook pro running mverics and i cant update the apps that were purchased by the preveous owner on a different itunes acount and i need to update the apps thanks
It appears as if the OS currently on that machine was not the original OS? If so, you are running into this problem because the seller did not do what he was supposed to do - he was supposed to erase the hard drive and reinstall the original OS. And, if he got either the OS or any apps at the app store, they are not transferable as they are tied to his Apple ID forever. That is why you will have to pay for them using your own Apple ID. And, if he obtained the current OS at the app store, you may also run into another problem: you may not be able to reinstall the OS if needed as that is tied to the original Apple ID as well.

Bought a used macbook pro and trying to do a new reset
I keep getting this response :
this item is temporarily unavailable try again laterIf you want to reset your macbook pro to its factory new, out of the box configuration there are a couple different ways to do that depending on exactly which MBP you have. Look under the Apple menu in Finder and select About this Mac. If your MBP shipped with Lion or later it can be restored using Internet Recovery OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support Some earlier models can upgrade the firmware to use Internet Recovery Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support If your MBP isn't one that can then you would have to restore from the original set of gray install discs which the seller should have provided.

Macbook Pro from 2011. Can I restore to factory settings without disk?
Hello I think I downloaded a virus on my mac. I dont have time machine so the only option I think I have is to restore my macbook but I dont think my macbook was baught with Lion. What are my options? P.s. My Model Identifier:
MacBookPro8,1Hello I think I downloaded a virus on my mac.
Before you waste time restoring your computer to factory settings, what makes you believe you have a virus? Although Macs are not invulnerable, malware on the Mac is quite rare and most of it can't make it past the built-in defenses in Mac OS X. So, it's very unlikely that you have malware. Post a clear, concise description of the problems you're having.
Also, if you don't have backups, that needs to be your absolute top priority. Without backups, it's just a matter of time before all your data is irrevocably destroyed. -
My MacBook had to be reformat and everything on the mac disappeared, including Iphoto.
Since Iphoto was on the computer when i bought it i cant understand why. so my cuestion is do i now have to
but Iphoto in appstore or can i find it somewear ? thank you for helpingYou should be able to restore the iLife apps, see this support article:
From Accept iLife: OS X: About OS X Recovery
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

i might be stupid, but i cant find osx lion which i paid for a year or so ago, all it shows is mountion lion which i would have to buy. anyone have any ideas as to how i can redownload lion osx, 10.7.5 thanks.
Hopefully, you saved a copy of that ill-designed installer which deletes itself during the installationi process, necessitating wasting resource DLing it over and over again. Sheer madness and toatlly anit-green in behavior.
