Selling powerful iMac for Retina MacBook

Dear friends and fellow Apple enthusiasts,
I am considering the possibility of selling my iMac to fund a retina MacBook. The screen really won me over when playing with it in an Apple Store.
My iMac specs are as follows:
27-INCH, Mid 2010
Processor  3.6 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD
It is in flawless and mint condition. I am hoping to get enough to fund the Retina MacBook (around £1500), as I get HE discount.
I have a 24" Apple Cinema display I can connect the Retina MacBook to. I will use it only as my home workstation, as I already own a 13" MacBook air.
So my Question(s) are as follows:
1) Will the MacBook match the power of my current iMac (I like to edit photos, play some music, play WoW)
2) Is this move worth it, or silly?
3) How will the 24" display look when connected to the retina? Can I use this external display as an "extension"?
4) Can my Imac get my asking price? (I spent £2300 on it, and it still has warranty for another 13 months)
Thanks guys.

Hi,
I will answer your questions in order.
1. The new Retina MBP should match your iMac's performance or even better according to GeekBench.
2. Choosing the Retina is totally up to you. Do you think it will benefit you? You won't go wrong either way.
3. The 24" display will look normal. You can use it as an extension.
4. You should get your asking price.
What model Retina MBP are you looking to get and how are you gonna store all your stuff?
Hope this helps.

  • Selling my iMac for a macbook help!

So I'm selling my mac that I got in january this year (2013) and I want to sell it to get a macbook so I can have something more accessible. I have a PC which I mainly use but use Logic on macs, will this run logic well compared to my pretty newish imac?
17" Macbook Pro:  (Early 2009, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor; 320GB hard drive, 4GB RAM).
If I sell my iMac I can get around £850 £800 and this has been offered at 550

Then you will have to give up something... It is either money, portability or performance.
If you can't spend the money on a newer computer then Logic's performance will go down. If not the 2012 versions then 2011. I would be uncomfortable going with any computers older than 2011 if you're using a professional programme like Logic.
If performance matters to you a great deal then you will need to either use your current new iMac, which is pretty good, or you need to find a way to finance for a newer computer.
There is no magic way around this. You will have to give up something. Choose among money, portability or performance. Ask yourself which one is more important that you can't compromise. Go from there.

  • Lack of DIY hardware upgrades for retina MacBook Pro

Can any hard-core Apple Fanboys testify that somehow built in ram on new retina MacBook Pro's is more stable than replaceable RAM modules which have come with previous models? I understand Apple's decision to move to built-in ram to make the overall computer smaller but it worries me a little not being able to replace or upgrade the RAM whenever I want to or whenever I need to. So I'm wondering if anybody can testify that built-in ram is better.

I would love it if they didn't phase it out. I just think its common sense. No one hear can say they understand apple more than the next forum member. I simply was asking if anyone here had any better technical knowledge than myself and knew for a fact that built in ram was or was not any better than sodimm. Ram
Is one of those things that us techs troubleshoot and replace often and it's a no brained that those with retina MacBooks will have to have their entire motherboard replaced if the Ram goes bad, unless apple put the ram on a separate replaceable board.

  • Use my iMac for as macbook screen?

I recently purchased a hendge dock for my macbook (early 2010) in order to save desk space, but I would like to use my iMac 27" as a screen in certain instance.  What are my options in order to make this a reality? Thank you.

If the iMac is a 2009 or 2010 model yes you can do this otherwise, nope! The feature is called Target Display Mode, Apple explains it in Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs

  • Will InDesign/Illustrator be updated for Retina Macbook Pro Display?

Will the Adobe Creative Suite programs be updated for the MacBook Pro Retina Displays? If so, when?
I viewed text in InDesign 5.5 and Illustrator on Macbook Pro with Retina at an Apple store (with Display Performance set on High Resolution Display in InDesign) - the type looks all pixelated at edges. Much smoother on Antiglare display. I and deciding between purchase of a Macbook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare screen and the Retina display screen. It would help in my decision if Adobe would give some indication, if or when there may be updates in Illustrator and InDesign for better type on the Retina display.

The only program we’ve heard about is Photoshop and that’s CS6.
The chances of older versions being updated are pretty much zero.

  • Contribute 6.5 optimized for Retina Macbook?

Is Contribute 6.5 optimized for a retina Macbook screen? I don't want to get a new Macbook retina and then see a pixelated screen - I only use Contribute from Adobe. So my concern is only this software, nothing else. Thanks!!!

No it's not... and it looks awful. Adobe Contribute is one of the most used programs on my computer. When my other laptop  died recently, I had to buy a new MacBook. So I was pretty surprised when the graphic display was highly pixelated.
Nothing like progress taking you back ten years.

  • Shutdown takes forever for Retina MacBook Pro (rMBP)

    I am running 10.8.1
anyone experiencing long shutdown? my startups are faster than my shutdown by 3 times
also, are the battery issues resolved in retina macbook pro?

    Hello almostinverted,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
You can check the specifications for that computer here:

  • Long boot time for Retina Macbook Pro 11,3 running 10.9

I have a brand new Retina Macbook Pro that used to have lightening fast startup times (~15 seconds). About a week ago, it started taking a LOOOONG time to boot up (about 3 minutes). It hangs on the apple logo with the spinning grey circle. This is after exiting out of all applications, going to system preferences and slelecting my startup disk as Macintosh HD. I have four login items (DropBox, xType, Alfred, and Clipboard History).

    UPDATE:
I removed all of the login items from System Preferences -> Users and Groups -> Login Items (not just unchecked them). I should have removed them one by one and restarted the computer each time to see which was the culprit. I added them one by one, and restarted every time. So far so good. I'll update if I see a lag again.

  • External Hard Drives for retina Macbook Pro - Thunderbolt vs. USB 3.0

I already bought a G-Tech FireWire800/USB 3.0 external hard drive and just bought a second one.
And I just found out that USB 3.0 does not daisy chain (and the G-Tech drives only have one port each), and I also read that USB 3.0 hubs are not working well on the Mac.
I think of selling the drives again (at a loss, of course) and buying a Thunderbolt drive:
    Here are the two options:
    1. Western Digital:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/890519-REG/Western_Digital_wdbusk0080jsl_n esn_8TB_My_Book_Thunderbolt.html
This drive seems to have two external hard drives. Would it be possible to use one of them as the main external hard drive, and the second one as the back-up hard drive?
    2. G-Tech
G-Tech also sells Thunderbolt hard drives like this one here - but it's a RAID 0 drive - can I also use both discs separately as main drive and backup drive without using RAID 0? I just trust G-Tech more than Western Digital:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID _External_Hard.html
    What's your take on it?
    Thanks!

The NEXT THING which is upcoming now that SSD prices are dropping is Firewire to SSD, or Thunderbolt to SSD.
Now THAT will be a "did you see that?" improvement.  A few home brew folks are already making their own.
run the two discs separately as one disc for storage? Yes, I however I have never had the desire or need to setup such a daisy chain. Autonomous data storage for safety is a rule I live by.
Backup VS. storage, is really a distinction without a difference.
My main PDF collection is 14 Terabytes, so...............  Yes, it depends on what you need, just remember the religion of storage, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Never consider any computer a data storage device, rather a data creation ,sending, and manipulation device. Any who thinks any data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time even under ideal conditions
burn important data onto multiple copies of archival DVDs and store same in cool dark fireproof safes, hidden places, secret places, multiple places
always consider and expect thy computer’s hard drive to completely crash anytime, at all times, and keep a cloned and updated hard drive handy at all times to return to immediate productivity and avoid program and parameter reinstallation and tweaking

  • External monitor for Retina Macbook Pro

Hello,i want to buy an external monitor for my late 2013 rMBP.I tried two models (Dell U2414H and LG 23MPQ65-P),none of them worked perfectly. On both monitors colors were washed, without contrast, the font was blurry. So i decided to return the monitors and also I sent the laptop in service for several diagnoses to see if there's something wrong with my Macbook.
I see that there are many models of external monitors  that do not work correctly with rMBP.
I want an 23-27", FullHD, IPS monitor that would cost around 400$.
Can you tell me some suggestions?
    Thanks.

So which input ports are best to use? I know there's ones like HDMI and DVI, so which is better to use?
Modern monitors will likely have HDMI, DVI, and/or Display Port inputs. If you use HDMI then you will not need an adapter since your computer will have a HDMI port out. You will just need a HDMI cable. If you use DVI you will need a mini display port to DVI adapter and a DVI cable. Dual Link DVI is best but you will need a mini display port to Dual Link DVI adapter and a Dual Link DVI cable. If your monitor has a Display Port input you could use that.  vga will produce bad results compared to all the digital ports.
Your selection depends on the monitor you get. To get the best display resolution use what provides the monitor with video at the monitor's native resolution.
Use Google to compare the specifications of the different ports https://www.google.com/search?q=display+port+comparison+dvi+hdmi+dual+link

  • IWork '09 not ready for Retina Macbook Pro?

Just bought a 2012 Retina Display Macbook Pro... I also downloaded iWork '09... The entire suite isn't retina compatable... anyone else noticing this?
Apple, when are you going to fix this?

Go to the Pages app through finder and right click and go to "get info" (or hit command + i when the app is highlighted). Uncheck "Open in low resolution."

  • Can I use the same Quicktime 7 Pro Registration Key that I used for my iMac, for my Macbook Pro?

It seems silly that I need to buy a new key for the same product that I purchased.
Is it true I need to buy another copy?
    Thanks in advance.
    Drew

Quicktime Pro for Windows is a separate product and a separate purchase from the Mac version.
Apple do not provide transfer purchases from Mac to Windows.
You must buy the Windows registration key, which is bought  from the Apple Online Store.
Remember to keep the purchase details safely in case you need to reinstall Pro in the future.

  • HT1338 thunderbolt to gigabit update for retina macbook pro

Still only getting 100mbs through tis connector. Any updates yet?

The only Thunderbolt display I'm aware of is Apple's.  However, the Thunderbolt port on your MBP is also a mini-displayport and that is the normal way of connecting an external display to your MBP.  You therefore need a mini-displayport to whatever you need on the TV end, e.g. HDMI.  Apple have a good selection of cables on their online store.

  • Choosing a DISPLAY for my Macbook Pro

In the need to be more mobile, I am going to be selling my iMac for a Macbook Pro. Only thing is I don't want to sacrafice screen size in exchange, so I would like to have a decently similar size display as my iMac right now when working at home on my desk.
So I'm looking to get a display along with my Macbook Pro, obviously the first apparent option is the apple cinema displays. But my question is are there off-brand monitors (i.e. LED displays from Sony, Samsung, Vizio, et cetera..) that would do the job. Because for the price of the apple display, I could get a much larger off-brand one.
I don't want to sacrafice display quality or pixel clarity though. I also am not sure if those off-brand displays have slight video lag? For example, when audio is sync'd with video, or when playing a game?
If there is anyone who has dealt with this issue and could provide me with some beneficial feedback, please let me know!

Third party screens work just fine, and you can get anti-glare models too, so your not fighting reflections like on the Apple ones.
You'll have to search online for computer monitor compairions and choose one that's best for you in price, size and affordability.
Apple has all sorts of adaptors for their video ports, so do your research there and the video OUT capability of the MacBook Pro your deciding on.
I HIGHLY suggest the 2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro or higher, as this has the RADEON 6750M video card which can pump out more pixels to your external monitor.
Anti-glare on the MacBook Pro is also recommended as it's a portable device and you can't control the enviroment everywhere you go to reduce the reflections on the screen.
    Good Luck

  • Uneven backlight is "normal" on retina MacBook Pro?

I bought my 13'' Haswell retina MacBook Pro days ago, I've experienced the unresponsive trackpad issue and I'm happy to see it's already resolved. But now I've encountered a new issue, and it's about the display.
As the picture above shows, in low ambient lightning coditons, I can clearly see the brightness is uneven, the top left corner and the left bottom of the screen is brighter. The center of the screen seems brighter, too. But please ignore it because I suppose it's because of my poor phone camera quality, I don't see any significant brightness with my eyes.
I was considering replace it at first, but later I called Apple, the advisor told me it's "normal"!!! Actually, he said according to my description, my symptom is not very profound, of course I can get a replacement if I insist, but he really can't promise I'll get a better one since it's a normal issue on IPS displays...
To my knowledge, among all the Macs, only iMac and retina Macbook Pros use the IPS technology. I agree that my sympton is not that profound. The first time I noticed it is when I try to watch a movie in a dark night. In normal use, I can't say I have much bother. Except when I let the browser enter the full screen mode, since most sites use a white background, then I can see a small area of the left bottom of the screen is a little whiter, which is not profound but kind of distracting though.
I've asked one friend of mine who used the 2012 rMBP and he said he have the same condition too... So now I really wonder whether it's a common issue as the advisor said. Please download this full black image, open it and go to the full screen (or presentation) mode. Turn off your light and increase the brightness of your screen if it's set too low. Then check whether you have the same issue with me. Thanks a lot!

Yes, I also have the same problem on my late 2013 rMBP. I've returned the model 4 times already due to various defects. Can anyone see the uneven white balance from left to right screen where left side looks more yellowish?Very disappointed at the quality of the screen. Looks like this is "normal." Should have purchased the New Samsung ATIV 9 instead.
