[semi-solved] Cinnamon: Set default new window location?

I'm running Cinnamon and have a shortcut to gnome-panel on the taskbar
when I click it a terminal opens
The problem:
the terminal window is opened on the top left of the screen
I'd like it to open on the bottom right or center of the screen
How can I tell, whatever is responsible for this, to create new windows in the center or bottom right?
semi-solved because there should be a better way than using devilspie but it does the job

Hey Claire,
do you think it's X11 related or something to do with Cinnamon or.. which window manager does Cinnamon use?
Or rather, do you know which component is responsible for window placement, maybe a hack could be written
Cinnamon uses muffin as it's Window Manager, a fork of Mutter for GNOME. I'd assume that you'd be looking at getting something for muffin to work or using something like SteveK suggested.

  • How to set default new tab behaviour

    I dare say I could have found the answer to this by trawling the web as it seems to be a problem that has been going on since the invention of tabbed browsing in firefox version 2. I just thought i'd go to the trouble of registering and re iterating it one more time to vent my frustration.
    You'd think that setting what page (if any) to use when you open a new tab would be the easiest thing in the world! - like the first thing you see when you go to settings - second only to the homepage to use when you start firefox . But no , Mozilla seem to have made this simple issue into one of the most difficult problems your average user is likely to come across!
    I cant even see why it is not just "the home page". If the homepage opens with a new window - whats the difference if its a new tab? This is a non problem that mozilla have invented! "avoidable" dosent even cover it - this has required a lot of extra coding to create this problem!
    This has probably come up a lot more recently with some new feature of AVG barging in in hijacking this setting. I found question 983923 on this site addressing this issue for that reason.
    The 'chosen solution' ? REINSTALL FIREFOX !!! (and thats with manual cleanup too)
    Unbelievable! thats only one stop short of "wipe the pc and reinstall windows" for chris's sake.
    Presumably the victim chose this because more sensible methods have failed - as they have for me.
    other "solutions" i have seen suggested while researching this insurmountable problem are :
    - Go to about:config page, search for "browser.newtab.url" change its value to "about:newtab"
    - create a "new profile" whatever that is! surely they dont mean windows profile?
    - use the addon that someone has created to fix this pointless glaring issuer that mozilla havent
    - start in safe mode to see if an extension is causing the issue.
    well I'm going to take a break now from flogging this dead horse and see if I can do something more productive with my time. This has got to be one of the stupidest problems I have encountered with a computer, and I have been working in IT (in this exact area 'user / desktop') for nearly 20 years.

    thanks for that, the "reset preferences" option returned it to displaying recent windows on a new tab, which is close enough!

  • Setting default Finder window

    Is there any way to set all Finder windows to one setting in Leopard? I like to use the old-style sidebar-less windows, but i keep having to change all new folders to this setting after creation. Anyone have an answer?

    Yes, lots of other similar posts. I feel the same way, I'm having no luck getting my folders to keep their specific view settings reliably. I think there must be some kind of bug, in addition to the reconfigured (more archaic to me) view options window. Hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

  • Setting default universal save location

    hello, i am setting up my own organizational system, including automation etc., and would like to have any document i create, download, etc. saved to the same folder. for speed, i would like to have this set as a preference or something similar so i don't have to navigate to this folder every time i save something.
    can anyone tell me how to do this (*i do not want to use my user document folder for this, but will use a folder inside my user folder)?
    i'm thinking there might be a preference i can change in the terminal, but don't know where to start looking . . . i can work fairly comfortable in the terminal.
    i've seen things like Default Folder X, but don't want to use a separate application; i would rather have this set via a preference and use condensed save dialogs.
    any help appreciated!

    Hi Praveen,
    Based on my test, the solution in the link your post  works in SSMS of SQL Server 2005, 2008 and 2008 R2 version. However, in SQL Server 2012, the configuration of SSMS is changed.

  • Setting a new database location problems

    I've not ran into this before. I'm pointing a report to a new location , but I'm not seeing the report data. The other odd thing is that after pointing to the new location, if I show the SQL, it is still looking at the old location. Yet another odd thing is when I'm setting locations, I don't see one of the sub reports. It's still in design view, but not in the connections screen.

    Ok, I got the report working but I don't know why Crystal didn't complain about it. The new location had a field changed in the table (a linking field between tables at that). It had an underscore added by another programmer (recordid was changed to record_id). Crystal didn't complain and I even did the option to make sure the database was up to date and it claimed everything was fine. Evidently it refused to set to the new location without giving an error and was reporting no problems with the fields because it was looking at the old location.

  • How to set default PDF print locations to be same as source file

    Is it possible to make the "Save to" location for files created using the Adobe PDF print driver to be the same location as the source file?
    When I checked the prefs dialog box in the Adobe PDF print driver, the only setting I found was to make "PDF Output Folder" either the "My Documents" folder or "Prompt for PDF File Name." I wish there were a third option that said "Same as source file."
    -Danny

    Hi Daniel,<br /><br />Yes, it is possible to do so.<br /><br />Here is the solution:<br /><br />1) Open the PDF.<br />2) File->Print<br />3) Click the Properties button available on Print Dialog Box.<br />4) Select the Adobe PDF Settings Tab and you will find static text "Adobe PDF Output Folder", Go for "Browse" button available against that and select your preferred location.<br />5) Now the drop down menu will display all the options i.e. "My Documents" , "Prompt for PDF File Name" and "<Your selected Option>".<br /><br />I hope this will help resolve your issue.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Atul Agarwal<br />Adobe Systems

  • I need to set a new window to maximize on opening

    Hi There am looking for some assistance. I maintain a system for a customer that uses a firefox browser to deliver a number of pages to a number of terminals around a building. The existing system uses firefox version 1. something and i am currently looking at replacing with new PCs and teh latest version of Centos which comes with firefox 3.6.24 installed. The only problem i am currently having is that when firefox opens it looks for our server and then opens a second window that actually displays the pages of information and on the existing system this secondary window opens maximized but on the new firefox it does not open maximized and i cannot find the ability to do this.

    {Ctrl + Click} doesn't open a hyperlink in a new tab? <br />
    Do you have that problem in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • [SOLVED]KDE 4: forcing new windows so they start centered..

    Hello,
    I have this simple problem and I can't google the solution. I don't like the default behaviour of window creation, when they are automatically placed in the left corner of my active workspace. I would like to have them centered on screen - is there a way to acheive this?
    Best regards,
    Mike.
    [EDIT] I am sorry for troubling You - I just found a way to do this using window specific settings in system settings.

    Um, no.  Good question toad.  This is what I'm getting:
    # mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/win
    Unexpected clusters per mft record (-1).
    Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument
    Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Invalid argument
    The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't have a valid NTFS.
    Ok, I've tried a couple things now and got it fixed to a degree.  When I installed a swap partition in the middle of the partitions, this altered GRUB's knowledge of the partition tables, and I had to reinstall it.  During this I accidentally installed GRUB 'setup (hd0,0)' to the Windows partition.  But I don't think this caused the problem.  I say this because when I did [wiki]MBR#Restoring_a_Windows_Boot_Record[/wiki] the Windows partition still didn't show in Dolphin.  Instead, I had to repair the Boot Sector as described by a friendly guy in the Ubuntu forums.  Because this was a Boot Sector issue, it looks like the fdisk command did this.   Anyways, I'll describe it quickly here in case anyone else comes across it.  What you need to do is boot from a LiveCD and either install TestDisk or use a Rescue CD like Parted Magic that does, then start 'testdisk' and do these steps:
    No log
    Choose Disk > Proceed
    Intel
    Advanced
    Select partition > Boot
    Rebuild BS > Write
    And voila, next reboot, I'm able to see and mount my Windows partition again.  Phew.  So it looked like the problem is fixed, but not quite.  When I rebooted and tried to load Windows GRUB hung, it showed one line, something like 'GRUB loading stage2' and it wouldn't go any further.  Has anyone run across this before?  I use Windows from time to time so, hoping to find a way to get this fixed.

    Found out more, take a look at this post:

  • [SOLVED] What sets default I/O scheduler for disks?

    Hi,
    having read the Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/So … _Scheduler , my attention got caught by the current I/O schedulers for my disks:
    SSD (two partitiotions: / and /boot, both ext4):
    # cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
    noop deadline [cfq]
    2 HDDs (part of ZFS mirror pool, partitioned by ZFS itself, mounted automatically on import by ZFS):
    # cat /sys/block/sdb/queue/scheduler
    [noop] deadline cfq
    I am about to create my own udev.rules to set noop and cfq for SSD and HDD, respectively. I just wonder, why all of them are not [cfq], which should be the default?
    P.S. I grepped all files in /etc for "noop" and "cfq" to make sure it is not some of my setting forgotten in time. And found nothing.

    The kernel config does I believe.
    % zgrep -i iosched /proc/config.gz
    CONFIG_IOSCHED_NOOP=y
    CONFIG_IOSCHED_DEADLINE=y
    CONFIG_IOSCHED_CFQ=y
    CONFIG_CFQ_GROUP_IOSCHED=y
    CONFIG_DEFAULT_IOSCHED="cfq"
    Perhaps zpools default to noop somehow.

  • I can't seem to get firefox to open a new blank window by going to the menu or doing "comand n" is there a setting disableing new windows?

    also when i click a link on an email in thunderbird nothing happens and when i try to rip a tab off to make its own window it disapears.

    You can inspect and adjust the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page.

  • How can we set the Default to "New Window" for the "Create Link" – "Specify Open Preference"?

    We would like to set the "New Window" as default but can't find where to set it..  I looked through all the Perferences and could not find where this is set.
    We see this when creating Links.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Thanks for your reply.  We are using Acrobat Pro 10.1.3 on Windows 7 64 bit workstation.
    We see this when adding a link in a PDF.
    Go to Tools, Content, Link.  Highlight something, Creat Link, click Next.  Pick somthing to Link too.  Like another PDF and the Window in the first screen shot comes up.
    I ran a Regshot and here are the results.  Looks like all user keys which would be normal but there must be a way to set the default in the Preferences?  This does not seem to be a setting that stays if you will so there must be something over-riding it.

  • Open new window firefox

    By default Firefox opens urls set to 'new window' in a new firefox tab instead. Is there any way to force Firefox to open a new window?
    getURL("www.adobe.com","_blank");
    This doesn't work in Firefox: it opens a new tab window instead of a real new window. How can I make Firefox open a new window? Without the popup blocker blocking it?

    Why do you want to override someones preference in browser window treatment?
    For the record, I set my FF2 that way on purpose, back when it wasn't the default.  Chrome works this way by default, and I set IE8 to do this as well.  It is a severe annoyance when a website goes out of their way to override my chosen preference.
    That said, the only way to override this is to use a javascript popup, which risks the popup blocker.

  • Converting Word Hyperlinks to PDF as "New Window"

    I have a user who has a Word 2003 document which has a lot of hyperlinks.  In Word, the "Target Frame" setting associated with the hyperlinks is set to "New Window".  We use Adobe PDFMaker to convert the Word document to a PDF.  The hyperlinks convert into the PDF file, however when you click on the link, it opens in the same window.  How do we get it to open in a new window, so that the original PDF file as well as the linked PDF file are both open?

    To expand on what DevyaniB said. This is an application preference, not a document preference. You can set this preference for your computer, not on another user's computer.

  • Default size and location, dialog boxes

    how can I set default size and location of dialog boxes? I have tried several things to no avail,
    thanks in advance

    1. You could create your own subclass of Dialog/JDialog with your defaults set automatically
    2. You could create a DialogFactory that creates Dialogs (pretty much the same as 1)
