Send and receive phone numbers for iMessage

Since IOS 8 update, iMessage does not recognize my cell number. It only recognizes my husband's number and our email address. My number does not appear as an option on the iPhone 5; it does appear, but is not accessable on the iPad. It shows as light gray there. How do I fix this so I can send and receive iMessages?

situation has been resolved. Both iPhone and iPad had to be restarted on iMessaging, and then cell number was recognized.

Hello,
In iMessage for iPhone and OS X, sender bubbles are typically blue and the receiver's responses are gray. I have one contact in iMessage (OSX - Mavericks) who's responses are blue! So the entire thread of messages for this one contact: my messages are on the right in blue, his responses on the left are in blue.
However, when I go to iMessage on my iPhone, his messages are gray.
Every other contact's message in my iMessage is gray, except his. I've tried to reset password, reset phone, and reset iMessage OSX - new incoming messages from him are still blue.
What's going on here? Just want to make sure that my iMessage isn't hacked. Thanks

Nevermind, I deleted the contact in iMessage (OSX) and the messages are now being delivered in gray.

My phone isn't connecting to 3G and I can't send or receive phone calls or texts.

So my phone just stopped being able to connect to 3G and stopped being able to send and receive phone calls and texts. It was working fine this morning and it shows that I have multiple bars "dots" but my 3G is reading 1x and says I can't make a connection. What should I do?

If you have looked where James suggested and you are saying that the phone number does not appear in there at all, you can add the phone number to the iPad but you may need to sign out of Messages on the iPad AND the iPhone.
Phone number missing on iPad or iPod touch
If your phone number is not listed on an iPod touch or iPad, follow these steps:
Update to the latest version of iOS.
Verify that you're using the same Apple ID that you are using on your iPhone.
On your iPad or iPod touch, sign out of your Apple ID in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID with FaceTime and iMessage.
If your phone number is still not listed, follow these steps:
Sign out of your Apple ID on all iOS devices, including your iPhone, in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
When activation is complete, your Apple ID and all verified email addresses should be visible in Settings > Messages > Receive At and also in Settings > FaceTime.
Now sign in to your Apple ID on your other iOS devices.

IMessage waiting for activation. Phone number not listed in Send and Receive at?

I'm going to try to be as descriptive as possible, as I'm not too sure what else I can possibly do to resolve this issue.
3 or 4 days ago I requested a number change through my provider. Not knowing that I had to turn off iMessage whilst waiting for the change to occur, I left it on.
Later that day my friends were complaining that I was sending them texts from two different numbers, one being my new number, one being my old number. The thing is, I'm using the exact same SIM card and it's a little unusual to have two numbers for one SIM. I then realised that iMessage is ONLY registering my iTunes e-mail address and OLD phone number as an option to 'Send and Receive at'. I have spoken to Optus (my provider in Aust.) and Apple, I have gone into an Apple store, had the phone replaced, restored newtwork settings, restored phone altogether, turned on/off iMessage and Facetime, checked date and time, made sure my correct number is listed in Settings > Phone, etc etc etc I've done EVERYTHING listed in all forums that I've read from people experiencing this same issue.
I can choose to select my old phone number in iMessage, and can then send messages to others using iMessage from the old number, and if I switch it off, I'm then using SMS to send messages, and it's from my new number again! It's very frustrating not having all features on my phone working correctly.
If I switch iMessages and Facetime on, not using my Apple ID to sign in, it simply says 'waiting for activation' and after a few hours, tells me it was unsucessful and to try again. I'm all out of options now, Optus don't know what to do, Apple don't know what to do and I don't know what else to do! It's been 4 days! Someone please help!?

Just thought I'd let everybody know how it finally got resolved 1 week later!
After trying absolutely everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that Apple support, apple forums etc told me to do, the only thing that worked was turning iMessage off, waiting for at least 24 hours at then turning iMessage back on.
It activated itself within a few minutes, no dramas at all!

You do not have a "phone number". Your ipad has a cellular access number and can't make phone calls.
You must use your apple ID email for imessage and FaceTime on iPad.

Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each device and make sure only the phone number for that device is checked.

I just encountered this problem for the first time and stumbled upon this forum to find a solution. I played around with it a bit and it seems that if you slide your finger from the bottom up, you will come upon that new screen that will allow you to do various functions with your phone (put it in airport mode, lock, etc.), you can select your Airport from this screen and play your music wirelessly from your phone; at least this was my experience. Help with iPad Identifying Phone Numbers in iMessage Send & Receive Settings / iMessage Syncing Help - iOS 6 - iPhone - iPad

With iOS6, iPhone and iPad users will see that their Send & Receive iMessage settings have updated across their devices to be made available at both phone numbers and email addresses. You may have also seen alerts on one or more of your devices advising that another device is now using the same Apple ID/phone number for iMessage.
Being able to be reached on iMessage on both Apple ID and phone numbers across devices means that iMessage can keep the same thread and sync across devices.
Due to having 2 iPhones on different phone numbers running along side my iPad at one time, (whilst I was waiting for my phone number to be moved to a new provider), my iMessage settings on my iPad lost my phone number completely. I thought I would document the steps to recover this for anyone in the same boat.
1. Check that you are signed in with the same iCloud Account on both iPad and iPhone.
2. Turn off iMessage on your iPad from Settings > Messages.
3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. You should see your phone number and your iCloud email address in the 'Your can be reached by iMessage at:' list. Make sure both are ticked.
4. At this point, I synced my iPhone with iTunes, then synced my iPad with iTunes.
5. On your iPad, turn iMessage back on - your phone number should now show in the 'You can be reached by iMessage at:' list. Tick the phone number. You should receive an alert on your iPhone.
This should resolve the issue.
With the above set up and with the iOS 6 updates, iMessage should now sync fine across devices however I have still found the most successful way to run iMessage is to always start new conversations from your Apple ID and to start new threads by addressing the first message to an Apple ID from an Apple ID.
To do this, go to Settings > iMessage > Send & Receive and tick your Apple ID in the 'Start new conversations from:' list, then start a new iMessage thread to the recipients Apple ID. This way, the thread will sync across iPad and iPhone. Note that a thread set up this way will not fall back on SMS, so you get a clean iMessage thread. This method also worked/works on iOS 5, as long as you send the first message of a new thread from an iPad (which can only send via Apple ID) to an Apple ID.

TS2755 I have 3 phones on one Icloud account. It has been this way for over a year with no issues. After and update on of the lines started getting text messages from all 3 phones. We fixed the send and receive and it was fixed. It is doing it again.

Yesterday after two hours on the phone I changed my apple id and it is still happening. Before that Verizon had told me to turn off my imessage when that happened I could not get any texts at all from other Iphone users.

Make 3 different iCloud accounts and use ONLY for iMessage. That will permanently fix your issue.

Here the way to do it, for both, or for only one Go into your settings, Messages and turn on iMessage. It will then send messages that are iMessages to both your iPad and iPhone. You can also turn off this feature on the iPad if you do not want to receive messages on the iPad.

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you have a phone number linked to iMessage and the phone number has a +1 in front of it. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

Sign in to an Apple ID on your iPhone. You will see all addresses verified with the account.
Tap an address to enable it on the device. The telephone number will be dimmed when you view these settings on an iPhone.
