Send junk mail to trash

I am using Apple's Mail. Does anyone know of a workflow that will automatically send my junk mail to the trash? I would also like to have the option to delete the trash periodically e.g. once a week.
TIA.
John

Does anyone know of a workflow that will automatically send my junk mail to the trash?
Mail>Preferences>JunkMail - 'Perform custom actions' then click Advanced to configure
In the Advanced panel, set the 'Perform following actions' to (Move Message) to (Trash)
I would also like to have the option to delete the trash periodically e.g. once a week.
Mail>Preferences>Accounts>MailboxBehaviors - in the Trash section, 'Permanently erase deleted messages when (one week old)'

  • Junk mail - automatic trash???

Apple mail junk filters seem to work fine (since I get virally no junk to my .me address), but mail I forward from other mail accounts (especially yahoo mail) is not filtering out all of the spam.
Is there a way to set up my spam folder in apple mail 7.3 to move all spam to trash? so I don't have to deal with it...
    thanks
    tom

Open Mail preferences and click on the Junk Mail icon in the toolbar. Use the option to automatically send junk mail to the Junk Mail folder - second option in the uppermost list.
Select Accounts in the toolbar and click on the Mailbox Behaviors tab. If needed adjust the options for what to do with junk mail and how often.

  • How do I send junk mail to spam on my iPad and iPhone?

How do I get rid of junk mail. The more I unsubscribe the more I get.  Can you send to spam on iPhone or iPad?

I suggest you rely on your email service provider to do that.  If you're not happy with your provider's filtering, Gmail has a good reputation for filtering spam.

  • How can I stop someone from using my mail id to send junk mail?

It does not happend all that often, but occasionaly I get a message that someone (who I don't know and is not in my address book) received an email from me that I did not send. Is there a way to stop that or protect my from that happening?

There may not be too much that you can do since it's most likely not originating from your email account. There are a slew of Windows viruses and worms that scan the infected computer for email addresses and then send out emails with spoofed From: addresses that it finds.
Just one example of a virus generated email taken from Symantec's website
    English:
    From: Spoofed
Subject: I've_got your EMail on my_account!
    Message:
    Hello,
First, Very Sorry for my bad English.
Someone is sending your private e-mails on my address.
It's probably an e-mail provider error!
    ]-f
At time, I've got over 10 mails on my account, but the recipient are you.
I have copied all the mail text in the windows text-editor for you & zipped then.
Make sure, that this mails don't come in my mail-box again.
    bye
    Attachment: your_text.zip
Have you ever responded? The email that you're receiving may even be from a similiar virus.

  • Need help deleting graphic junk mail

I need help. I cannot delete graphic junk mail into trash. When I try it says unable to move messages. Messages could not be moved to mailbox trash. And the dial keeps spinning. I'm not getting mail cuz this junk is bogging down my iPad & iPhone.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I tried going on my MAC and deleting but they dont show up there?!? I tried rebooting, hard reset, nothin.
Please anyone out there ? I'd be eternally grateful.

If you cannot delete them on the Mac, it will probably be problematic trying to delete them on the iPad as well.
You said you couldn't delete them on the Mac either. If you mean in the Mac mail app, don't delete them there. Delete them on the server in your web browser. Launch Safari - or whatever browser you use on the Mac and then go to your web mail and delete the email there.

  • Can't see mail in the Junk mail folder

I have my mac set to automatically send junk mail to a junk mail box. All of a sudden I can no longer see the mails in the folder. It is showing the number of emails in there but when I click on the junk icon it shows zero. I can not do a rebuild because it is not highlighted when I click on Mailbox.

    Rosieb,
Don't worry about not being knowledgeable about what's going on here. Answering the questions you're being asked and providing all relevant information is critical to properly troubleshoot the problem, though, and you don't need to be knowledgeable on computer issues to do that, just follow the instructions, answer all questions, and ask for any clarifications or if there is something you don't feel comfortable with.
If you look at the Junk icon in the mailboxes drawer in Mail, you should see a black triangle to the left. Clicking on it should reveal the individual Junk mailbox of each of the accounts. You can now select these one at a time, identify which is the one that has the problem, and rebuild it if necessary.
It could very well be, however, that the problem is what Ernie is suggesting, i.e. the .mbox suffix is missing from the Junk mailbox name in the Finder, and that's the reason you cannot do Mailbox > Rebuild on this particular mailbox, in which case you must follow Ernie's instructions to fix it.

  • Junk mail stays in Inbox, in spite of Preference setting

Junk mail is flagged, but remains in Inbox. I set Preference to put junk mail into the Junk mailbox.
I tried un-setting and resetting the Preference.
    I tried rebuilding the Inbox.
I tried Perform custom actions to send junk mail to Junk mailbox.
This happened only after I upgraded to Yosemite. It always functioned properly until now.

    the same in may case.
I "solved" the problem with adding a rule:
Message is marked as Junk - move to Junk at #Junk-mailbox-of-main-account#
The Rules interface in the the Mail.app Preferences, and it allows to select "Message is Junk mail "(= mail message is marked as Junk).
Maybe, the problem happens when one has more than one Email account?

  • Stop Junk Mail

When I log into mac mail on my apple computer, mac mail does a good job sending junk mail to the "junk" folder. How can I prevent this from being forwarded to my iphone? Every junk email I get goes to my iPhone4 email's inbox. How can I prevent this? Thanks.

If you would need a delete all for all messages received by your POP account and it receives what you call a "massive" amount of spam, why do you want to continue accessing the account in the first place? It may be time to give this account up. If you are receiving that much spam with your POP account, your POP account has been severely compromised in regards to spammers. Once the cat is that far out of the bag, there is no getting it back. Once an email address has been placed on a "known good" list with a spammer and has been that compromised receiving a massive amount of spam, it is way too late. Spammers trade/sell "known good" email address lists. Placed on a "known good" list can occur when any HTML is rendered from a remote server with received spam and when selecting any links included with received spam. I use a free email account such as Yahoo with webmail access only when making an online purchase that requires an email address or when an email address is required for website access, or when provided publicly in any fashion that can be more easily compromised, and my main email account is used to exchange email with family and friends only. I receive very little spam with my main email account.
There is an option to select multiple emails for deletion at once, but I would seriously consider making the switch to another email account to be your primary account such as with your MobileMe account or with a free Gmail account. Google has an excellent spam filter at the server, and Apple's spam filter at the server has also improved. You could also use the junk mail filter with the Mail.app on your Mac as the junk mail filter for the account with your iPhone without any Mail.app rules by leaving the Mail.app on your Mac launched and running actively checking the account for new messages while your iPhone is doing the same. Since all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account, the Mail.app's junk mail filter can be doing the same for the account on your iPhone remotely.

Junk mail returns after deleting the item in the "Junk mailbox" and "Trash".  Is there a way to permanently block the sender?
I have deleted the item multiple times both on my Mac mini and my touch and 5 minutes later it is back in my Junk mailbox.  The item will not return to the Junk mailbox until it is deleted from the trash.

    You can create a Rule

  • Trash, Sent mail, and Junk mail folders do not work

I just switched from my entourage email to mac's mail, and I noticed some problems that I cannot seem to figure out. I amm using IMAP based email, and had none of these problems on entourage, but I like the format of mail better, so i hope to get this resolved so I can keep using mail.
    1. Trash- When I delete an email it does not go to the trash folder like it did in entourage, but rather just disappears and I cannot find it anywhere. This is regardless of if I try and store it on the server or not. Either way, the deleted messages disappear.
    2. Sent mail- I may know why this is not working, at least I have heard a possible explanation. When I send an email, it will not go to the default sent-mail folder on my IMAP server, and so disappears unless I tell mail not to store them on the server (but there are obvious disadvantages to not having the mail stored on the server). I think this has to do with the fact that the sent mail folder on my IMAP client has to be set to sent-mail, while I hear Mail requires it to be just Sent.
    3. Junk mail- When I mark messages as junk mail, the program does not move them to the junk mail folder, neither in mail nor on the IMAP server.
Now I have gone through as many of the options I can find to try and resolve this, but I have it all set up the same way I did in entourage, and cannot figure out why it is not working. Does it have to do with the naming of the folders for my IMAP service? Those seem to be default and unable to change. My Trash is labeled "trash", Sent mail is labeled "sent-mail", and junk mail is labeled "Junk".
    I appreciate any help.

    1. When not stored on the server, the account's Trash mailbox should be located under the Trash icon in the mailboxes drawer if "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox" is selected under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences.
If you have this selected, using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes. Within the Mailboxes folder should be a folder named
Deleted Messages (name of your IMAP account in parenthesis).mbox
Confirm the folder includes the .mbox extension.
    2. When you select "Store sent messages on the server", select your IMAP account's Sent mailbox under your IMAP account's icon in the mailboxes drawer which is sent-mail and at the menu bar, go to Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For and select Sent.
    3. Do you have Junk Mail set to Automatic?

  • Sending e-mail from specific senders straight to Trash

Is there a way to flag e-mails from specific senders to go straight to the trash? There are certain senders who constantly send e-mails that I invariably trash. Currently they all go to the Junk mail folder where I have to manually delete them. If I could flag all incoming e-mails form theses senders to go straight to the trash it would be a real help.

You can configure a rule to check incoming mail and route messages to a destination mailbox of your choice. Open Mail preferences, click on the Rules icon in the toolbar.

  • Thunderbird fails to send email when "Scan email for junk mail" option is checked in Server Admin

I have 2 clients that need to send mail through my server, one Mac and one Windows. The Mac uses apple mail and the Windows machine uses Thunderbird.
Apple Mail will send fine, it is set up for "Use Default ports 25, 465, 587" and "Use SSL" and "Authentication: MD5 Challenge-response".
Thunderbird refuses to send and I don't even see any errors showing up in the Console on the OS X server under smtpd entries.
If I uncheck the "Scan email for junk mail" option on the server, then Thunderbird will send fine.
Thunderbird is set up as: "smtp port 587 (default)" "connection security: STARTTLS" "Authentication method: Encrypted Password"
May or may not be relevant: I use virtual domains as well as aliases.
Server: Mac OS X Server version 10.5.8

Solved it, looks like maybe the smtpd settings for sasl authentication may not have been correct. I followed everything in http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/38/41/ the "Frontline Spam Defense for OS X server" guide and now can send mail just fine from Thunderbird Winodws and from Apple Mail.
