Send to color changes some in/out points

This is confusing me a lot. I send a sequence to color and about half the clips (all in succession) export just fine, while the others (again, a group of clips in succession) have completely different in and out points than they did in my Final Cut timeline. What's even more weird is that the in points or outpoints didn't jump to the beginning or ending of the clip - they look like they were just randomly picked while preserving the clips length.
My sequence is HDV if that means anything at all.
Thanks for any help.

I have found that HDV can be graded natively in FT, but it's certainly not simple, and could be the origin of your problems. More likely are speed changes. FT hates them, and Color, according to the manual, handles them only to a certain extent - Constant Speed only. It hates Variable Speed effects and stills.
Having said that, the timeline in Color/FT is a different beast from what we're used to - shots can slide around a bit and still find their way back to FCP, albeit with some adjustment needed later.

  • Filters change in and out points?

This is the first time this has happened.
When I add certain 3rd party filters and/or composite a layer above my clip, the in and out points appear to change in the clip (i.e. a different portion of the clip is now in the time line.
When I double click the clip, the incorrect portion of the clip is loaded into the Viewer window, but when I do a Match Frame, the correct portion of the clip is loaded in the Viewer window.
Also, when the incorrect portion of the clip is loaded in the Viewer (like when I double click it to load), the current timecode display (upper right) is italicized. It is actuallly the correct timecode, but the video is incorrect and the timecode is italicized.
I did a Save As..., created a new sequence and cut and pasted the contents of the problem sequence, and set up a new project and cut and pasted the sequence in there to see if there was corruption, but I had the same problem there. i also trashed FCP preferences.
I have a Mac Pro dual Quad 3Ghz running OS X.5.4
I searched everywhere for "filters changing in and out points" and "Italicized timecode" and everything else I can think of, and found nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Color changes my IN/OUTS and sends a BLANK sequence back to fcp

hi everyone, Please help if you know, I am very frustrated
i finished editing a music video HDV 1080i - 5 minutes long... a lot of the clips have variable speeds.
i sent the sequence to color and a lot of the clips are different than the ones in final cut. (what is weird is that the thumbnail on the color timeline has the right icon) but the video that plays is different, and when i go to render it, it shows its length as 1hr or so even if the edited clip is a few seconds long. so i can't even render it to check it out.
with all that, when i render and send back to FCP i'm getting a blank sequence (that is IF i get it to show).
NOte: i tried deleting the corrupted files before sending back and nothing good :s
Please let me know if there is something in the settings that i need to change, my project is due in a couple of days and i'm dying here! i hope FCS doesn't let me down this time.

    Couple of reasons, maybe.
The "COLOR changes my ins and outs" is usually related to a Variable Time Remap, or some kind of fps incompatibility. Sometimes its the result of nested sequencing, which is in a way related to Multicllip -- all of which are deal-breakers as far as a round-trip is concerned. Final Touch used to re-create the entire source clip, but only insert the selected frames where it thought they should be, which was usually wrong, but there'd be a half an hour of black to wade through. Now it renders the entire source clip, and "you figure it out", is what it tells Final Cut, and sometimes it actually works, but only with constant speed remaps, so there is some math involved instead of pure guesswork.
    But trouble shooting:
First, check to see if the media is properly rendered somewhere, anywhere, by using the FInder and Quicktime Player, that is, take Final Cut out of the mix as a possible error element. Try doing a Reveal in Finder on one of the Black clips that you have... "follow the money".
If you can find it, if it exists, if it looks okay, then its time to sort out what Final Cut wants or where it expects to find the media. Maybe in a wrong directory? But if there is no media, anywhere, that is another issue, but I'm betting that it does exist.
There is a correct sequence of events in loading the RenderQueue, in that your target folder must be selected or created beforehand, otherwise everything will go to the pre-existing default directory. Then the XML created by the Send To Final Cut request will specify the folder that you subsequently created -- which, of course will be blank. This is a big, big problem that might be solved by moving the whole works into the created folder where you thought everything was going. maybe.
You MUST do an explicit "SAVE", not an autosave, after Render, to prompt COLOR to remember that it has done the render. If you don't, there is a good chance you will be doing it all over again.

  • Batch Capture Randomly Changes In and Out Points

I'm editing a documentary on Final Cut Pro 5.0.
Using a SONY DSR-11 firewire deck.
I logged sets of clips and then batch captured them. I DIDN'T select add handles in the batch capture tool. Some clips, as they're captured, change their in and out points. Sometimes by two frames early, sometimes by two frames late, and sometimes not at all. Several clips even stopped captured with an out point twenty seconds earlier than what I'd logged. The result is that I have clips with media start and media end points that are not in what I wanted. There seems to be no rhyme or reason whatsoever to this.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Many Thanks if you do!

Check to see if your tapes have NDF time code.
If you play a tape with NDF TC using Log & Capture, the current time display will defaut to DF until the tape palys forward long enough for the current time field to update. It is posible to log NDF tapes as DF, in which case the timecode values can be incorrectly re-converted if recapturing.
Also, If you initiate a batch capture from the browser, FCP will default to DF, and not be able to update the TC format to NDF duriing the batch. The workaround here has been to cue up NDF tapes with L&C, and start the batch capture while L&C is still open and showing NDF TC.
However, upon upgrading to FCP5 last year, I found that even observing all these precautions and steps, FCP would still shorten the out point of my captured clips on NDF tapes. I was capturing a feature film that came from the UK, and so the starting time on the master was 10 hours instead of 1 hour. When the DF/NDF error occurred and shortened the out point of my 2-hour clip, it did it by several minutes instead of several seconds, because of the starting TC on the tape. In that case, I wound up adding several minutes to my out point and recapturing the end over again.
I haven't experienced this issue lately, but it comes up every now and then.

  • Changing In and Out point on duration of Clone Stamp tool.

    Hi guys.
I'm sure topic of this question is quite confusing so here is a clearer explanation.
What I'm trying to do is to use clone stamp tool on a frame by frame basis to remove some elements. There is a lot of them so I will have many layers in Effects > Paint > Clone 1, Clone 2 etc. Each one of them is only needed for one or two frames and I was wondering if there is a quick way (shortcut for example) to set "out point" for that effect without grabbing them individually from the far right end and dragging it to the left.
I'm attaching an example of what I'm doing
I hope there is a simple solution to this as I will have hundreds of these and I would really appreciate some time saving magic.
    Thanks a lot guys.

  • Help. sending fcp timeline to color changes some clips to freeze frames

I was finishing a project in FCP that was shot on the RED. I had a number of deliverables. I cut in FCP with REDs M-res proxy QT files then uprezed (replaced the footage) to H-res for my conform.
I then "sent to color" a number of different timelines. Everything was on one layer and there were no effects or speed ramps on any of the clips.
About half the time, the timelines would be fine. The other half of the time some of the shots came in as freeze frames from earlier in the clip. This was very problematic in that I couldn't color the same scene fully. I needed to get it done in a day so I had to match what color was doing in FCP with the clips that would not come across.
I moved the clips in the timeline but they would only come in as freezes.
    Anyone heard of this before?
It compromised the quality of my job and ended up being very costly.

    Let me get this straight.
You were editing with the proxy container Quicktimes in Final Cut?
If that is true, then I'm sort of surprised that COLOR opened at all.
You should have actually "down-rezzed" the QT containers to the "P" proxy. That will cause COLOR to open up and link to the original R3D raw 4K files (if that's what you were working with). That also raises the spectre of 3K... tell me that's not so, or that is Strike Two.
There is an associated utility with the "Clipfinder" software called ColorFixer (doesn't have anything to do with film processing) that will take away the so-called and well-documented "looping bug" that afflicts large-ish spanned RED files.
That's a couple of things that occur to me right away...

  • Color changes when moving mouse pointer

    Hi,
I have an issue that, when I move the mouse pointer over the controls of the video (when playing quicktime movies in full screen) that it goes darker and looks a lot better!
But as soon as I move the cursor away from the controls, the image becomes brighter, loses contrast and on the side is a green oder pink stripe.
Funny is, it does that in quicklook too, but not only in full screen!
the weirdest thing ever is... it did that on my old windows machine too!!!!!
I thought when I buy a mac it will go away... but apparently not... very disappointing!
I have googled the whole internet, but apparently I am the only one with this issue... or maybe not?
    Can anyone provide any help??

Okay guys, after waiting for two years, QuickTime X fixed this!

  • Color is changing the clips in and out points

I tried to import into color a fcp7 sequence.  The original footage are quicktime clips.
When the project opens in color, the in and out points of the clips are not there and it gives me the beginning of the clip.
With other footage that I ingested in FCP I don't have a problem.
Can someone explain this to me.
    Thanks

    >The original footage are quicktime clips.
What FORMAT of Quicktime?  Because QT is just a container that can be one of a dozen codecs.  Color ony works with certain codecs, like ProRes, HDV, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD.  If the codec is anything but those...it will have serious problems.

  • Why changing clip's in/out points leaves gap in timeline?

When I change a clip's in/out points in the viewer, it leaves a gap in the timeline (while preserving the overall duration of the sequence).
Is there any way to change the in/out points so that there won't be a gap (adjacent clips move next to changed clip). I've tried the overwrite edit. Do I need to use the ripple or roll delete tool? If so, how would I do it?
    Thanks!

I really don't want to get into a snitching match here. < </div>
Doh! Too late. You can contribute to the thread but trying to point out flaws in DH and Shane posts is a waste of time. You can take shots at me all you want, I just pretend to be in their league, that's my job around here.
learn how FCP works and you will be a happy camper. < </div>
The surprise for newbies is that FCP is remarkably deep and complex. It comes with 2000 pages of manuals. Thinking it should or will behave like any other application you've ever known, including other video apps, is silly.

  • How do I stop firefox from sending a message or note that " do I want this program to change my computer?" It changes some of the settings in my computer; like the color of my task bar changed and other settings too.

Before nothing happened until just recently when box messages would appear and tell me to click "yes or no" if I want the program to change my laptop. I clicked "No", but sometimes it didn't work, and when it didn't work. When it failed, fire fox changed some of the settings in my laptop. For example, the task bar's color would be changed. Also, it seemed as if fire fox had changed some of the settings into an old version. Yesterday I restarted my laptop, and it just went back to normal like nothing happened. But, for a few minutes later, the box will appear and you have to click yes or no. I clicked the "x" button, and it just changed automatically.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.<br />
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".<br />
In the Compatibility tab, make sure that Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" is not selected.<br />
You also need to check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.<br />

  • How to change colors in some Muse Widgets

    Hi,
After getting the perfect answer to my question about using new widgets from http://muse.adobe.com/widget-manager , I now have another one.
Customizing the widgets has been extremely easy except of only one part I cannot figure out: changing the color in some of them. Precisely,  "Accordion (Panel Widget)" < http://muse.adobe.com/widget/panel-accordion-adobe >
I tried customizing the colors to fit my site's theme in photoshop but I could not replace the default colored banners/flags. Also, I do believe the banners are supposed to be able to be stretched across the screen to make it look 3D -- I was unable to resize them, either, like I could with similar widgets.
I absolutely love this widget but need guidance as to how to customize it for my site. It is perfect for the very long Press page and the Video Gallery. Here is my page in demo mode so you can see what I mean: < http://torgexperiment.businesscatalyst.com/video-gallery.html >
I need to add this to the live site ASAP as the film is doing quite well and is now premiering internationally.
    Thanks,
    Jill

Hi, as you can see from the screenshot I provided, the widget uses 3 external images as backgrounds for the labels.
This means that you cannot change the color of the background directly in muse. You have to re-design the flags in Photoshop/Fireworks/Illustrator (or another application you like) and import as background image.
For the background width/height. You can choose:
    1. Use the scale to fill option to adapt you image to the container's dimension. Be carefoul because if you size the image over the 100% you'll see it pixelated.
    2. While you are re-redesign you flag with the right colour, choose also the right width/height valuse for your project.

  • Getting Color to only render between in an out points

When I import into FCP, I generally create slices of my movies between 1 and 5 minutes depending on what is in them. Then I slice them up with multiple in and out points and place them on my time line. This is all good until Color gets in the mix and its very confusing why it does what it does.
It appears that when sending to color and selecting a primary setting and then rendering, it renders the entire length of the clip (5 min in this example) for every single slice created with that mov file. Now before you tell me this makes sense, you'd have to explain why upon rendering it, it chops the entire film off at exactly my in and out points so as to prevent me from doing any further work such as adding a transition or sliding things around using slip edits or anything else.
So to get this straight, it renders the entire 5 minute clip, then chops it off at 5 seconds which was all it had to render to begin with.
So my question you ask? Well, I want to know if there is a way to get Color to chop the clips off before it bothers rendering? As I said, it makes no sense at all what its doing currently.
And my last question, is there a way to get Color to create handles so that if you decided to add a transition later on you could?
    Thanks,
    glenn

CHOP: "once clips have been color corrected in COLOR, they are no longer associated with the original media in any way"
    Right the first time.
There is the "handles" approach that allows a few frames wiggle room.
CHOP "So should I tell the label that it's a 4-step process or too much of a hassle to extend a shot beyond the original edit?"
(This is an after thought: Has a client ever asked you to "dolly back" a little bit more on a clip to include more of the scene in a frame? Just wondering.)
Lets say it takes a bit of planning.
CHOP: "back to a telecine or flame bay...Quality is never cheap $$. "
Also correct. But there are a few of us that have the delusion of working in the "real world"... where are you? Hollywood?
Actually the FCP/COLOR linkage is a bit better than the old tape/daVinci model. Now that was a hassle.

  • Video after In and Out points Changed

After opening up a video in the Viewer and setting In and Out points, and dragging it back to the Browser afterwards:
    1. I tried changing the name of the clip that I dragged back to the Browser, though it changed the names of the other clips in the Browser to the same name. Why?
    2. How come when you double-click on the new clip and it shows in the Viewer, it shows the In and Out points as well as the video from the original segment around it. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I thought it was supposed to just display the segment of video starting with the In point and ending with the End point.

    1. do some reading in the manual. Might try making the clip independent.
    2. Yes. I know it may seem weird, but it has some really powerful uses. Double click on a clip in the timeline, it loads in the viewer. You can then change your in and out points in the viewer and they will be reflected in the sequence. (with some limitations). If you want to "isolate" the material between an in and an out, check out "make subclip."
This is very basic fcp stuff. Skim the manuals, explore the menus, you'll figure this stuff out pretty quickly.

  • Losing in an out points when sending to compressor

    Hi
    Have just upgraded to FCP7.
In the past I could set in and out points on my timeline in FCP and when exported to compressor it would just compress the material between those points. This was very useful but is not happening in the new version. So for example, if I have some black at the beginning of the timeline it is compressing that despite the fact that before I could set IN at the beginning of the edit and it would automatically go from there. I am exporting it by using the Send to compressor method.
    Thanks,
    Pete Snowdon

You'll have to step into the nest, select all the clips you want, then send them to Motion.

    LambChops1,
I’m using Mavericks, and it’s still possible to select text to drag and for cutting and pasting. Left-clicking and right-clicking is still possible, too.
Try opening the Trackpad pane of System Preferences, and select the Point & Click tab. To right-click, ensure that your “Secondary click” checkbox has been checked; the small print under “Secondary click” is a dropdown menu which allows you to select the form of right-clicking that you prefer. (For instance, mine is set to “Click in bottom right corner”.) For left-clicking, is your “Tap to click” checkbox checked, or unchecked? (Mine is unchecked, since I prefer pushing for left-clicking over tapping to do so.)
