"Send to Color" command yields dark clips in Color...

HDV 1440 x 1080
Send to Color = dark video
Send back to FCP = still dark.
I have made sure to send my video from FCP with out any filters (other than widescreen filter), but it shows up looking all dark.
Why is that?

Here's what my horoscope said today:
You may be elated at the possibility of negotiating peace in your life now as you stand between two opposing factions. It might be as simple as wanting to settle a family argument or as complex as working out the details to a major business deal. But as you get further into the process, it becomes apparent that finding common ground may not be so easy. Don't judge yourself harshly if you fail to broker a solution, for it may take longer than you expect.
Brightening toward noon, darkness setting in about 7PM.
The overall luminance drop in the non-corrected render has the feel of a gamma incongruity. I don't know how the "black & white" is being generated. Whether it is straight "Y" with CB,Cr multiplied by zero or what might be going on there.... COLOR expects full Y,Cb,Cr as incoming media and converts it to RGB... so in this case, if its only Y, then R must equal G must equal B or there will be a tint. This math can be inexact, and I have to wonder what else is going on in the render engine, which is a different path than the preview display.
If this footage starts out as HDV, I'm wondering if there is a Quicktime thing happening in the render to whatever your chosen format is. Have you tried that format conversion outside of COLOR, that is exported directly out of Quicktime for example?

  • Photoshop uses JavaScript to load open documents into the Match Color command

    Hello,
I am a production artist and I make use of the Match Color command quite a lot in my work. I often have 6-10 Photoshop documents open and one of them is designated as my master document. With this document active, I launch the Match Color command. Inside the Match Color dialogue, I load one of the other open documents into the Source drop-down menu under Image Statistics. I click Ok, and save the master document under a new name. I have to repeat this for all other open documents. Needless to say, it gets tedious.
I started to write a script to automate this, but I cannot find the syntax for the Match Color. I have the Adobe Photoshop Cs6 Javascript Scripting Reference but have been unable to locate it in this PDF. I tried looking online, but no luck. Does anyone know what syntax to use as well as associated properties / methods?
    Thanks for any assistance.

What we do is we make seamless images from product photos supplied by retailers in the flooring industry (carpet, tiles, etc). The seamless image gets loaded into a virtual room scene powered by Adobe Scene7. Scene7 takes the seamless image and duplicates it horizontally and vertically, in 3D perspective, so the final rendering looks like one continuous product image. Check this link to see an example:  http://sitesetup.creatingyourspace.com/wlhhbw4/designcenter/vrddesign.aspx?room=2854 The thumbnails on the left side are seamless images. click on one and it will load into the virtual room.
When I make seamless I may encounter 20-50 images of the same product, but different colors. Rather than spend 10-15 minutes per seamless, I make one and then let Match Color do the rest. Match Color is a great tool for this application. If destructive editing were an issue, the layer could simply made into a smart object, but we're not concerned about that.
I did try the javaScript listener. Below is the code it generated. I'm new to JS so I don't understand all of the syntax.

  • Color timeline starts each clip at 00:00:00:00 after sending from FCP

When I export a sequence from FCP (7.0.3) to Color (1.5.3), the latter shows a timeline with clips of the proper duration, but with the wrong in/out. Each clip in the Color timeline starts at 00:00:00:00 of the source file, as opposed to the "in" I had selected in FCP.
The video originated as h.264 files from a 5D. I transcoded the files to ProRess 422 for editing, and am sending them from FCP to Color as such. The FCP timeline contains nothing but these ProRes video clips.
    Thanks for your help...

any way to use an edl with these kind clips?
That poses an interesting option, maybe. For starters, though, the Send To... COLOR command instructs FCP to write an XML export that is decoded by COLOR, and that should take care of things.
There is a strategy that AVID users sometimes employ, and that is to export a CMX EDL, open that under COLOR and link to the media directly under COLOR (this works for RED flow). I am mystified as to why COLOR defaults to the first frame of your exported clips -- unless the time code is faulty in some way (or is not present), and so COLOR is simply beginning at the beginning as a kind of default.
Even if the in-point is wrong, are the clip durations correct?
Are you absolutely sure there is timecode on the ProRes clips? Apparently this is a problem shared with Final Cut Express, where exported QT clips always start at zero, but this is hearsay on my part as I have never dealt with FCE.
An alternate strategy at this point might be to export a complete Quicktime of your finished (textless) project, re-import it into FCP and "razor" cut it using your original timeline as a cutting guide. That sequence would go to COLOR with no issues.
A lot of users do this as standard procedure if they want to avoid a lot of "baking" and conforming if they've got a large number of mixed, or unsupported, media clips on a timeline. As a brute-force solution, its the Big Unifier.

  • I can't "send" a clip to Color from FCP because it's not an option.....

I have FCP Studio w/ Color loaded, as well as Soundtrack and Motion, however when I right click on the clip and choose the "send" to option Color is not part of the drop down menu where Motion and Soundtrack both are.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Bill

You can either send the whole sequence to Color or create a new sequence (command+N) copy and paste your desired clip/s and send that new sequence by either control/right clicking the new sequence in the browser>send to> Color or go to File send to>Color.
You can still send your highlighted clip to Color and the application will open keeping your clip highlighted but the rest of the sequence will show up too.
Please note that communication between FCP and Color is handled thanks to XML transfer.

  • "send to color" command from FCP not working.

    Hello there...
The problem i'm having is when I send to Color from FCP nothing happens.
I'm working on a project all the footage is in DV... very straight forward.. i've worked with color in the past so i understand the process of preparing the material for Color.
I restarted, created a new project, imported material in different codecs like pro res... and Nothing... Nada.
I have the latest version of FCP and Color.
i'm on a deadline so i want to avoid reinstall... any ideas??
any help will be greatly appreciated!
    thanks!!!
    andres.

Hello JP, Thanks for your reply!!
    Here are the answers...
Restart: the application and computer (usually the solution to every problem in life)
Created a new project In FCP.
I'm not mixing any codecs... everything is straight edits no dissolves, no speed change, just cuts, all the material is the same source an old school mini DV camera 29.97fps.
I'm trying to send a sequence form FCP. Actually the "send to color" command is highlighted.
    By nothing i mean:
I select on file menu "Send to Color" command and I see the prompt window with the duration of the project (5min) Name of sequence... i change the name to v2... and thats it. Color doesn't open... I tryed opening color in advance and same thing. seems opening script is not working.
Thanks for your reply and help!!!!!!
    best,
    Andrés.

  • Can anyone tell me how to make a video clip in color transition?

Can anyone tell me how to make a video clip in color transition like the opening of "Oh Brother where art though" ?
You know the scene at the start where it starts off Black and White then as we move down the timeline it transitions to a rusty brown gradually.
It's on the Apple site for FC Studio as a promo clip.

how to do a keyframe trasition in the Color FX room
I realize that you can "add" keyframes to the timeline in COLORFX, but I don't believe they are always observed, and then they usually disappear in retrieved projects, and aren't persistent if you leave the room. To remember where they are... you might mark in a keyframe on those frames in another room as a pathfinder. The behaviour is consistent with a creature of the six-legged variety.
Method 1. If you are trying to taper the effect (any effect) in COLOR FX, the most linear approach is to render two versions of the clip; one "with", one "without" and do an opacity fade once you have returned them to Final Cut. This gives you the most control, flexibility, repeatability and consistency.
Method 2. You may attempt to keyframe the bleach bypass settings within the node itself -- the preset that comes with COLOR doesn't have any controls, but the Nattress plugin does.
Method 3. Set up a "blend" node with your bleach bypass feeding one of the inputs and leave the second input to default to the untreated video... keyframe a transition from "1.00000" to "0.00000" and that should work.
Note: the keyframe timeline markers will disappear from the timeline if you exit the clip, but the effect is likely to persist. At least that was what was happening a couple of minutes ago... for me, the effect and blend performed the transition just like it was previewing when rendered. This strategy is subject to being created and rendered "on the spot right now", and I advise making sure you have your renderqueue settings ready to go... load the clip from the COLORFX room using the Mac command bar at the top of the screen and render it right away. Don't try to save it for later. Just Do It.
An announcement went around about two weeks ago that Mr. Deakins' website was back up and running, so give him another try... poor guy has been swamped probably doing Dreamweaver maintenance... yeah, that must be it...

  • Why can't I see my clips in color

I am using send to color from FCP - SD footage
When it opens in color some of the clips just aren't there or it is the incorrect scene. Some of them work great. I took the clips that weren't in color, put them in their own sequence and sent to color and got a totally different scene. I did slow the footage down and it was from a mulit-clup, but I told the sequence to flatten all of the multiclips. Any info?

Okay, that's not in the manual but it should be in the Release Notes.
Multi-clips aren't handled (well) by the hidden XML export. FT/Color doesn't know which clip to address, even if it has been "flattened". Peruse your "Shots" bin. You'll probably wind up rendering out the selected angles as independent clips to get COLOR to recognize them.
Speed changes: not handled well, either. It apparently shows the correct frames now, for linear/constant factors, but it will attempt to render the ENTIRE ORIGINAL SOURCE CLIP no matter how long it is -- eg. the entire one hour of material if you did a "Capture Now" on a tape, even if you only selected a few frames of it.
Also consider the non-support of Drop frame.

  • Fatal Error Acrobat failed to send a DDE command

Hello all.  I have a fillable form I developed using word 2010.  I am trying to convert it to a PDF form.  I open acrobat and select star from wizard from the Forms menu.  I browse to find the word document and open it.  I save the PDF document and everything looks good.  I get a progress bar that says "Please wait, reading Adobe PDF".  This is very slow progress and then I get the Fatal Error message "Acrobat Failed to send a DDE command".  I click ok and the progress bar continues still very slowly.  I get the same message again.  I click ok and the progress bar continues.  The progress bar gets to the end and just stays there.  Nothing happens.  I waited for an hour and then cancelled it. When clicked cancel, the PDF document opens with my form but without any fillable fields or drop down menus.  I tried to do it again a few times and I get the same error message.   I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 pro version 9.4.2.  Thank you in advance for your help.
    Gonzalo

AA 9 will not work for anything but the print function from WORD 2010. The only version of Acrobat that is compatible with OFFICE 2010 for PDF Maker is AA X. Thus, open WORD and print to the Adobe PDF printer. Then open the pdf in Acrobat. Go to FORMS>Add or Edit fields. Since you have no fields at present, Acrobat will ask if you would like to detect form fields. Answer yes and you will get a first cut at the form fields. Yes, you will likely have to add some more and change the ones that Acrobat estimates, but you are on your way.
The other two options you have is to go back to WORD 2007 or earlier or upgrade to AA X (or find someone with AA X and WORD 2010). These methods are pretty much your options with the software combination that you have.

  • How can I send multiple string commands into a VISA write?

    Hi Fellow LabVIEW users
I am very new to LabVIEW (2.5 months) so please forgive me if my lingo is not up to par.
How can I send multiple string commands to a VISA write. For example each string command looks like this
    1) 3A00 0000 0000 FFFF FFFF FFFF 0000 0000 FF00 0000 0000 0000 0000 0033 (Scenario 1)
    2) 3A01 0000 0000 FFFF FFFF FFFF 0000 0000 FF00 0000 0000 0000 0000 0034 (Scenario 2)
    3) 3A01 0000 0000 33FF FFFF FFFF 0000 0000 FF00 0000 0000 0000 0000 0067 (Scenario 3).
and so on and so forth. And there are a number of scenarios.
Each String scenario will give a different string output which will be interpreted differently in the front panel.
Right now I have to manually change the string commands on the front panel to give me the desired output. How can I do this without manually changing the commands i.e. hard coding each scenario into the block diagram?
    Thanks, any feedback will help.

  • How do I prevent the Darker Shade Box (color shift) around Vector Objects when Printing

Sorry in advance for the novelette. I am absolutely mystified and frustrated and would love some help! I've been working on this problem for about 30 hours over the last 4 days to figure out what the heck is happening and cannot find an answer through various forms of research.
Basically, when I print a JPEG, I am getting this area (a box) of darker shaded coloring around my heart and love text.  I've tested it a million different ways and am at a loss as to what the problem is ... is it an application problem, a color profile problem between my applications and printer, an improper way that I saved my file, etc.
Here is a photo I took of the image printed out (so it is slightly skewed from camera distortion):
    The details:
    (1) I create graphic art and sell it online. I save all of my printable art as JPEG files because of my customer base (diy hobbyists that print on their home printers without much knowledge base nor graphic design software).
    (2) I use both Adobe Illustrator (AI) and Photoshop Elements 11 (PSE11) to design and save my artwork.
    (3) I insert JPEG images into Microsoft Word 2003 documents to "test print" since most of my customers use home printers to print. Since most people have this basic software, it is a good gauge of the kind of print out they might get using the same or similar software.
    (4) My PSE11 color profile setting is the default sRGB. I have test printed many times and I get the truest colors with this color profile.
    (5) My AI color settings are normally also an sRGB color mode, but on occasion, I use a CMYK color mode if I am creating a larger document that I know the customer will need to take to a professional printer to print out.
    (6) I do my home printing (for proofs) on an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 (which has the 6 color ink cartridges).
    (7) Until this printing problem occurred on this test print out, I always used the "photo enhance" option when I designate settings for my printer via the Microsoft Word documents.
IMPORTANT: This is when I have the color shift?? or color rendering issues?? and it is the only time. If I use the regular ICM/ICC color profile of sRGB, the printing issue doesn't occur. Instead, I have a solid color background instead of this one with the strips of lighter color on the top and bottom.  However, I can't control how the customer prints, so I need to feel confident that whatever color profile setting they use, they will not run into this problem.  I even test printed the documents over at FedEx and the darker box/color shift did not occur.
    (8) The document in question only has 3 sets of objects: the heart, the solid colored rectangle colored background and the text.  All 3 objects are vectors, they are at 100% opacity and there are no "special effects" applied.
    (9) The image was entirely created in AI this time and exported as a maximum quality JPEG file, although you will see below that I tried many ways to create and save the file so that I didn't have the color band borders on top/bottom.
    (10) I regularly use AI for part of my art, then I drag it to my PSE11 open document and it becomes a Vector Object (it cannot by copying/pasting into a PSE11 document).  I also regularly export AI images as PNG files, then insert them into an open PSE11 document. This printing issue has not occurred until recently.  Here is an example of a very complex AI image I created, then inserted into PSE11 just to add the background (the Teddy Bear and books are AI vector objects) that were exported as PNG files then inserted into PSE11 to integrate with the background image - I test printed with Photo Enhance and had no printing issues:
So, from the research I have done, it looks like it is a color rendering or color space issue with conflicting color profiles in the same document. I checked my color profile settings and both sRGB and CMYK were set to embed ICC color profiles.
I tried changing AI settings to Preserve Numbers (ignore linked profiles) for CMYK, but that didn't work.
I also checked and made sure that not only the document setup showed the sRGB color profile, but that all the objects within the document also were converted to sRGB as well for consistency. That didn't work.
I tried converting the document to CMYK along with the vector objects. That didn't work.
I tried saving the heart image as a PNG file alone, the "love" text as a PNG file alone, both the heart and text together as a PNG files alone. Once saved as PNG files, I inserted them into an open empty PSE11 document - as I normally do. I then added the background color I wanted. That didn't work - the print still showed the color changes.
I tried dragging each vector object separately and even as a group and got the same color change issue when printing.
I tried "expanding" and "outlining" the text before exporting as JPEG, before exporting as a PNG and before dragging as a vector object into PSE11. Expanding the text did not help the situation.
I tried exporting as Adobe PDF, then opening in PSE11, then resaving as JPEG. That didn't work.
I tried flattening transparency (even though there is no transparency in the AI file). That didn't work.
I tried rasterizing the image. That didn't work.
Thinking that the file might be corrupt, I started from scratch and redesigned the same heart and love text.  Unfortunately, I had the same problem as before.  At this point, my AI started becoming buggy and would not open new files. It happened repeatedly and I decided it was best to uninstall and reinstall AI (and maybe that would fix the problem).
I created just the heart in AI, then inserted it into an open PSE11 document (both after exporting as PNG and also by dragging as Vector Object from AI). It seemed to work. I could both drag the vector into PSE11 from AI and export from AI as a PNG, then insert into open PSE11 document with a background color - and it printed a solid background.
So, I thought that reinstalling and setting back to defaults worked. But, then I added the love text around the heart and tried exporting as JPEG files and the same problem continued to recur. Whether I dragged as a Vector object into PSE11 (the heart object and love text separately and also another time with the vector objects dragged as a group) or saved them as PNG files and inserted into PSE11 - I got the different shades of color on what should be a solid background. I even tried saving the PSE11 as a PSD file first, then resaving as JPEG and I tried saving as PNG and printing and this didn't help solve the problem.
I really think it is some color conflict issue but I can't figure it out. I am definitely not very knowledgeable about color profiles and how to sync all my devices, however, as I mentioned, this was not an issue until recently (and I think??? I recall changing the CMYK setting from Preserve Numbers to embed color profile a month or so ago - however, it should have been solved when AI went back to its defaults upon reinstall).
The reason I believe it is a color rendering/color space issue is because I could see the color output when I saved the JPEG with CMYK color profile versus sRGB color profile and the sRGB colors were much richer, not surprisingly. The top and bottom colors matched the sRGB printout and the middle darker box section matched the CMYK printout.
I am sure it is something fundamental or simple and I am completely overlooking it.  I wish it were just a transparency issue, because people know how to fix or do workarounds for it. But, there are no vector objects with any transparency ...
If I missed some detail, I apologize. Any help would be a dream come true at this point! lol
    Thank you!

Okay, I got motivated to try again.  From doing a bit more research on troubleshooting AI printing problems, the Adobe article talks about print drivers. It was advised to uninstall and reinstall the print driver if the printing issue persists. So, I did. Unfortunately, I still had the same result after reinstalling and trying a test print! Ugh.
So, as Jacob said upfront, I seem to have an overactive print driver that is trying too hard (and it is a non-postscript printer which I realize is part of the problem).
There are so many variables in my situation as to how I create art and save/export art. I sometimes work solely in AI, sometimes solely in PSE and sometimes I use both programs to create. Consequently, I will:
    (1) export directly from AI as JPEG if I am not adding PSE11 artwork.
    (2) export directly from AI as PNG  if I plan on inserting that image into PSE11 to add to artwork I have created in PSE11.
    (3) drag vector objects as a Smart Objects directly from AI to PSE11 to add to artwork I am creating in PSE11 if I know I will playing with the vector object and resizing in PSE11.
So, I did a test print using scenario 2, where I inserted the heart and love text PNG (AI created vector object) into an old PSE11 document. This old document already had a vector object from AI with a solid background and I knew it printed correctly. So, after inserting this new PNG from AI into this old document, it printed correctly using the photo enhance mode.
However, I haven't had a chance to actually create new art in the older AI files (that I know print properly), resave as something else and try another test print (either by exporting as JPEG and printing in Word or by exporting as PNG file and inserting into PSE11 document, then saving as JPEG and printing in Word).
After testing the different possibilities of ICM settings within my printer, I found that the JPEG images printed out with the truest colors and best quality if I simply selected "no color management" from the printer. Shocker, huh? lol
MY SOLUTION: So, what I think I will simply do is add an instruction sheet with the printables I sell, explaining that the color profile setting should never be handled by the printer so make sure to turn off color management by printer (and if they feel they must use the printer for color management, make sure the setting is sRGB since I embed that color profile in my JPEG's).
Edited to add: Since my issue was never about how I could print a successful image (I knew I could simply change the color profile settings), but rather about how to make sure that customers would get consistent and high quality print outputs of my digital images, this seems like the best approach.
I don't think I will every really know exactly why I am now getting color shifts in the "photo enhance" mode when I did not have this problem a couple months ago - applying the same methods of creating artwork. I was concerned that I was saving/exporting using incorrect or mismatched color settings or something of that nature.  However, since I went through the process of making my color spaces the same for everything, and I still have issue, clearly that is not the culprit. The only thing I can do to solve the problem and it is a straightforward solution anyway -> is to educate the buyer on how to print successfully (don't use photo enhance! ha ha).
Thanks again to everyone who chimed in and offered advice!

  • To send multiple operation commands to serial port

My AC power source is able to communicate to PC via serial port using LABView and I can perform any operation by giving commands in Hex individually, But when it comes to the parallel operation of all the commands or to put them in a particular sequence. I am failing to do so.

You can only send 1 command at a time.  That is just bus communications 101.  But you can string together many VISA Writes to send the individual commands, one after the other.
But since if sounds like you are doing this on a GUI based instance, what you want to do is configure the port before your loop and close the port after the loop.  Then inside your loop you just have an Event Structure to key off of the different controls changing values.  You just send the command you need to inside of each event case.

  • Why is the "Send to iDVD" command missing from the share menu in iPhoto 9.4.3 when trying to send a slideshow to iDVD?

How come the "Send to iDVD" command is missing from the share menu? In iPhoto I used to be able to send my slideshows to iDVD simply my clicking on the slideshow, selecting the "Share" menu at the top and going to "Send to iDVD". Now in iPhoto 9.4.3 that option is missing.
Further i am also using iDVD 7.1.2 and running OSX version 10.8.3.
    Thanks!

Export the slideshow via the Export button at the bottom of the slideshow window with Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, choose a theme and drag the exported movie file to the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • AE How to Change the color of a movie clip?

I have a movie clip of a White Show Avalanche. How can I change the color from White to another earthly color. I would like to post 2 images, one still of the white avalanche and one still image of the color or look I am after. Can you post or attach images to this thread? If so how?
I am not just trying to change the Hue/Saturation.

To elaborate on Ko's post: In RGB space, White is presented by full values of 1 (or 255, if you like that better) for Red, Green and Blue. Since there's no differential between the individual components, there's nothing to shift the Hue. Hence you will have to find alternate ways of recoloring your stuff.
A simplistic way would e.g. be using effects such as Tint, Tritone or Colorama based on the Luminance. A more elaborate way would be cutting up the whole thing in multiple pieces (debris, shadows, waves, edges) and color correct each part individually. In any case you will very likely have to work with multiple instances of your layer and apply some masking here and there.

  • How to apply 3 way color correction to multiple clips in Final Cut Pro?

I have multiple clips from the same time and space footage that need color correction. I have worked on one of the clips and found the settings I like.
Is there a way to apply that correction to other clips without starting from scratch on each one?
    Thanks!

SoCal (above) listed one way. Another way you can do it if you like the color correction that you have done and want to save it, you can click the picture of the hand in the color correction tab and drag it into the browser. This saves that specific arrangement of colors, highlights, etc.
Also, this might be a little easier but instead of pasting attributes and right clicking you can just grab the hand (that I just talked about) and drag it onto the clips you want to apply the same color correction to. The hand is located in the color correction tab (in viewer) and is under the "numeric" button.
Note: All of your clips in your timeline will have different contrasts, brightness, colors, etc. NO clip is going to have the EXACT same attributes as another. It doesn't matter how expensive and professional your camera is. Every shot is different whether you are using artificial lighting or the natural lighting. Having that said, you will probably still need to adjust your different clips a little bit to make them look like they are in the same room at the same time. Hopefully if your lucky or had perfect lighting for all of your shots, you will not have to do much messing around with your contrast, brightness, etc. Good luck!
