Send to fcp from color, problem...

Hi,
I'm just new to the software and have a problem.
I open dpx files in apple color and send the sequence to final cut pro, everything is ok but the sequence is always brighter than the original one, so when I try to combine the two images (the original video and the sequence that comes from apple color) they don't match brightness-wise...
Apple Color automatically changes some values of the dpx files, but I don't know how to prevent it.
I'd appriciate if you could help

  • Send to FCP from color crashes

OK, I did the latest OS update and now when I have finished grading and hit send to FCP Color crashes, and generates a huge report.... Anyone having the same issue or is there a work-around?

Well, "they" killed my last reply.
In the spirit of troubleshooting, however, I have to go back to the OS, as that appears to be the last thing that was changed before you started having difficulties. We see these types of problems every time there is an OS change, whether there is a problem with the operating system or not, and widely reported on other support forums across the web. This particular release of a new OS caused a number of problems for me, similar to yours and the usual advice on almost any and every forum will be to start from scratch with fresh installs of everything. This is not always a very attractive option since many of us have downloaded software, some of which is "piracy-phobic" to the point of being nearly impossible to re-install, almost especially if you own a legitimate license. However, very often what happens with a new OS install is that a number of paths, registrations, preferences and linkages between the core system and the other applications gets broken. This may the case in your instance.
I reinstalled both the OS (Snow Leopard) and the application FCS, twice in order to attempt to stabilize my system, which now only occasionally either fails to launch or crashes/shuts down unexpectedly. I had to refresh nearly all my Utilities and will probably have to re-load SHAKE, which doesn't respond at all.
So there are a few things to look into or double-check if you suspect a system corruption as a result of an OS update. You mention that not only COLOR is affected, so it would be a good idea to look at other relatively simple applications, like Disk Utility, as a confidence booster.

  • Sending back to FCP from Color

I have been going nuts all day about this, I have a sequence with about 20 dissolves. It is about 1 minute 30 seconds long. I applied a very simple color fx called dream.cold.cfx. I got the clips to render, that was no problem. But when I "Send to Final Cut" it comes back correctly as a "Sequence_name (from color)" but the sequence is empty is is blank. The clips are in folders labeled 1,2 ,3, 4, etc. But it dosen't come back as a sequence in FC. help me, I read the manual, I look at the discussions. I looked at my render folder settings, etc.
I need help.... it's 11:00pm here in NY and I am tired and getting ready to hit the machine with a sledge hammer.

I am running latest version Mac OS 10.53, FCP 6, I have all the latest evrything. I tried exporting XML out of color. What I hav done is just pieced together the rendered clips from the color render folders and put the dissolves back on. But this shpouldn't happen. To tell you the truth I had it right the first time I did it, but I failed to apply the effect to a very small clip in the color sequence. So when I went back to the original FCP sequence that's when it hit the fan. I had the "send to FCP" corerct, but now it is just blank when I do it. I've done it hundreds of times, changing render folders etc. I have now just rerendered as a quicktime movie and did it that way.

  • Sending files back from color to fcp 7, but experiencing issues

I have four sequences in a FCP 7 project.  I sent three of them to color from FCP 7, completed my grading, rendered and sent back to FCP 7.  I did the same for the fourth sequence; however, when I opened this sequence in FCP 7 it had over written one of the other timelines media into the same clip lengths as the one I just sent back.  So it had media from another project, but with the same clip lengths as the I had just sent back from color.  I have never experienced this before.  I am working for an advertising agency and I am basically getting raw footage ready so that it can be send to an animation house who is going to be adding their animations, transitions and exporting the project.  This project is on a tight deadline and need to figure this issue out quickly.  Is this indiciative of corrupt files somewhere?  If any one has had this issue please share how you rectified it.
    Thanks.

Color renders out the files and gives them new names... g_1, g_2...and so on. If some of them are exactly the same length as another one that's labelled g_1...FCP could connect it to the wrong one and whammo, your issue.
The REEL numbers should transfer. But if your footage doesn't have reel numbers, then it will link by name and length often.  Yeah...messed up.

  • No Color Correction to FCP from Color

I have project that I graded in Color, I rendered it and send it back to FCP, when I viewed to clips in the FCP timeline from Color, no color correction was applied to the clips, did I do something wrong?
How do I make work properly?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I am new to Color but had the same problem, I was rendering out to an external harddrive. Re-render or move your files to 'Documents Folder' > 'Color Documents' > 'Renders'.
Then re-send your color project to FCP.
I'm no expert but this might work.

  • Going back to FCP from Color...use original format or ProRes422?

OK, so I've color graded all 5 reels for my feature film and am finally ready to send back to FCP and reassemble! I'm hoping Shane Ross can jump in here too since he's been SO helpful up to this point :-) So I have two different formats which I've graded seperately...720p DVCPROHD stuff (99%) of film and two scenes which were HDV 1080p24. So far when I've sent back my DVCPROHD clips I've rendered out of Color using ProRes422..but my Resolution Presets: and Width & Height settings are what I'm most concerned with. What I've done when sending back to FCP is use Apple ProRes 422 with Width 1280 and Height 720 and changing my Resolution Preset from 720 x 576 DV PAL to 1280 x 720 HD to match the Width and Height settings (not sure if I should leave this at 720 x 576 DV PAL??). However, the clips show up in FCP as 133%..so obviously upscaled. So now I'm going to export the DVCPRO stuff to Compressor to upscale to ProRes422 1920x1080 to bring back and match with the HDV 1080p24 footage before FINAL export to compressor again. Should I not be sending the Color clips back to FCP upscaled to 133% with my Color settings...since I will then again be upscaling in Compressor? Or will it really make that much of a difference? And also, should I check the Broadcast Safe circle in Color when sending back to FCP? I didn't color correct with the Broadcast Safe on so should I now to be on the safe side?
    Thanks!
    David

Ok Shane, So actually just went over my Color outputs and I did render everything as ProRes 422 at 1280x720 ...and the clips back in FCP are scaled at 100% so that's good...for some reason I remember having some that came back at 133%...maybe that was just a couple clips somewhere that were wrong...I'll figure that out...but I didn't check Broadcast Safe on the renders so I guess I can go back and re-render with broadcast safe on...so we did shoot 720p HD and I AM going back still in HD from Color.
Now I'm having another issue with the HDV 1080p24 stuff...which is actually only 20 shots of the entire film. But for some reason I'm noticing that they are interlaced when viewing on my FCP timeline, which my settings are HDTV 1080i 1920x1080...now when I export the scene out to Compressor as a ProRes 422 1920x1080 .mov it actually looks great on my computer monitor...no interlacing that I can tell, looks great. However, if I drop it onto my FCP 1080i timeline then there is interlacing again...and worse, when I make a SD DVD it is also interlaced...most noticable an actor's shirt, there is a bit of Moire effect going on...this must be because I'm downconverting to 720x486?? So I've been killing myself trying to figure this one out. Doesn't appear that deinterlacing in Compressor helps any either. Is my only option to blur it out with a gaussian blur of around 2? (the HDV clips do show as 1080p24 in FCP) Not sure if the interlacing would be gone if I were to burn a bluray since it's a higher resolution?? My settings in FCP are 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9) Pixel Aspect: Square, Apple ProRes 422 BTW.
There's also quite a bit of color blurring when watching from a burnt DVD from DVD Studio Pro...wish it looked as good as it does on my LG LED 32" screen with Matrox mini...man, do DVD's really look this bad? REALLY considering going and buying an external BluRay burner today
So if I could just get this interlacing problem resolved somehow...

  • Only one angle is playing in multi clip sent back to FCP from Color

2 camera Multiclip edited and rendered in FCP 6, sent to color, played ok after color adjustment.
Rendered in color, and sent back to FCP; second angle in the clip is blank (black).
tried different settings in color prior to sending, same result.
The multi clip plays ok in FCP prior to sending to color, and plays ok in color prior to sending to FCP.
Any idea what is being missed here to make second camera show?

The fix you can try is to Media Manage the project exporting the active Multiclip selection as independent. With that, you might even be able to create a new COLOR prj and import color corrections, so not much repeated labour.

  • 'Send to iDVD" from iPhoto problems - photos don't show up properly

    Hi
When I send photos/albums from iPhoto to iDVD using the function: Share->Send to iDVD' iDVD opens up, but the screen is blank in iDVD, the project info shows the photos are there, but there is nothing playing - just the blank screen.
When I do the same action on our Tiger iMac it works as advertised, not so on our Leopard iMac.
All software is up to date - iDVD 08, iPhoto 7.1.4
    Any thoughts anyone? Thanks

Thank you. It doesn't actually "fail" in that it crashes or comes up with any error messages etc. It just doesn't show anything in the screen. I have pasted the Console entries that came up when I sent album to iDVD - can't see much evidence in there but you might?

  • Sending back to FCP from Color no clips no sequence

So I am sure i am missing the blindingly obvious but would appreciate some help.
I am new ish to color but have read the manual and taken the Macpro video 1.5 training DVD to try and get up to speed.... Here is my problem:
I am sending a multiclip sequence to color (1080i pro res render). The clips appear in color and i am able to grade and render all OK.
When i send back to FCP i get a new sequence and new bin labeled with the clips.
however the sequence is empty and the bin contains a bunch of off line media. I can locate the new clips using finder but they are roughly 4 times the size of the original....
    Any help appreciated

What version COLOR? Multiclip is advertised to be functionally supported by COLOR 1.5, but it is not supported in any previous version. I am not familiar with the MacPro training DVDs, so I'm not assuming that it is tied to the current version.
When you say that they "render all OK"... are you sure about that? Why are the new clips about 4x the size of the original? That doesn't register as "OK" with me....
It could be a codec issue (doubt it) and it could be a speed remap issue (why not compound a known problem with another one?) and then it could be a renderqueue misdirection...

  • Is there a way to add Handles to clips when "send to (and from) color"

Hi all. Here is the reason i want handles.
After you finish your (draft) project you grade it in color, then the client comes in and approve it or makes some changes. But then i have no handles to play with if there are any changes.
    thanks
    Andre

I actually did read the entire color manual 2 months ago and have done 2 projects on it so far. But obviously i didn't remember every little thing.
The setup room you revered to is actually the room where you browse your files on your MAC etc. But i understand why you said that because you have to be in the setup room to be able to go to the project settings room. Thanks for your help Zebulun. I did go to page 102 and it solved my problem. The reason i couldn't find the "handles" setting is because its (for some weird reason) under the broadcast safe tab. And i didn't bother looking there.
    Thanks again
    Cheers

  • Media offline after sending back from color

Ok. I have searched around and not finding anything offhand, but I have not changed any default settings but I am getting media offline when I import back to FCP. I can find the location of the files and all but its giving me a hard time bringing media online.

I dragged and drop the file that came back from color.
Dragged and dropped? There is nothing to drag and drop. You SEND TO FCP from Color, then in FCP a new sequence shows up. Double click on that.
But I might be getting into semantics...you might be doing that but not explaining it well.
    Trash your FCP prefs...

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Send from Color back to FCP

At the point of sending color corrected files back to FCP from Color a window entitled "Send To Sequence Option" come up with the message: "Change graded Final Cut Pro sequence to match the Quicktime export codec?"
I'm using Apple Intermediate Codec in my FCP project and want to keep re-compression to a minimum. Being new to Color I'm not actually sure what is a stake here. If I press "No" does that mean my work within Color will be wasted or will if actually keep the color corrected footage in the Apple Intermediate Codec? I'm not anxious to switch codecs if I don't have to.
    Anyone have info on this?

    Stuart:
I am having the same trouble and am really mystified. I am working on an XDCAM EX 1080p24 35Mb timeline in FCP. I send all my files to Color, do corrections, and when I am ready to send my graded timeline back, I am asked whether or not to "change graded Final Cut Pro sequence to match the Quicktime export codec?"
Here's the mystery - if I click "yes", the sequence sent back to my browser in FCP is a 10 bit uncompressed sequence which will not play back smoothly for editing. Worse, if I click "no" the sequence comes back in what appears (according to sequence settings) to be an XDCAM EX 1080p24 35Mb timeline, but it also stutters, hesitates and won't play back, just like the 10 bit sequence, making editing impossible. (No rendering is necessary on this sequence when it is sent back from Color).
I have no problem playing the original XDCAM files on their timeline, but no matter what I do, I can't get my XDCAM files to come back to me graded from Color and play smoothly on their new sequence timeline even though Settings says it is exactly the same kind of timeline as the original.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening here and is there something I am doing wrong?
    Thanks, Rick

  • Still frame on out put monitor after seq sent from color

Hi, I am sending back to fcp from color and then I render in fcp but the file will play on desktop fine but not out to monitor as it did before going to color, why is this dose color change the format I have check and the format is the same and the seq setting.
2nd question I have some clips I would like to change in a sent seq from color to fcp can I just replac then in the time line and send to editor , what is the best work flow , thanks in advance for any help.
    using a aja LH card.

Color only renders into certain codecs so there is a good chance that the codec you sent to Color from final cut is different than the one Color rendered into. For example, if you send HDV to Color you will either get back ProRes or Uncompressed. If you have you FCP setup for HDV and you try and play back a ProRes or Uncompressed timeline you will only see still images in your broadcast monitor.
For your second question, assuming I understand you correctly, I would make a new sequence in FCP that only contains the new shots and send that sequence to Color.
    -Andrew

  • The Color doesn´t recognize the clips´time when I send from FCP to COLOR

I have a big problem. When I send from FCP to Color does not recognize the mounting clips. In each plane is everything and not the s 2 or 4 seconds it had in the assembly of the FCP.
I have worked with Color more times and have not had that problem.
Anyone can help me?. Can it be the codecs, the times of the FCP, the settings of COLOR?
Could you help me, please ?

    subpaper clips.
    What is a "subpaper clip"?
By the way, all this nonsense about COLOR only supporting one layer of video... where is this coming from? This is utterly untrue... I am thinking of Stevie Wonder's song that states that when people believe in things they don't understand, that's superstition.
Rather than try to explain all the things that COLOR cannot do, maybe it would be easier to lay out the basic concept of what should be sent.
Very fundamentally, COLOR is a sequential-file (.dpx) color correction or grading application that has been modified to work with a few Quicktime codecs, and can accept a single sequence of independent media (discrete clips) from Final Cut. That sequence can have many layers, but it cannot have any nested sequences, and there still are a number of editing strategies within Final Cut that can be proxied, albeit inexactly, but occasionally not at all.
The safest sequence to send to COLOR from Final Cut consists of independent Quicktime Clips, all of the same resolution, codec, and frame rate, which should match the sequence settings of the Final Cut project. There is a naive assumption that anything that can be done in Final Cut can be replicated in COLOR and returned intact. This is absolutely untrue, and the evidence of that is everywhere in this, and other forums.
In this particular instance, "zotero"'s problem, while lamentable, is of his own creation by ignoring or proceeding without any preparation or investigation, and assuming that every editor's concept of what passes for the creative process has been anticipated and compensated for by the application developers.
To mark them manually now when already I have the definitive assembly is a labor of many hours.
Unfortunately, that may be your fate. Alternatively, you may consider the use of a "Media Manage" operation which will re-organize the independency of the source media. The Media Manager is covered extensively in the Final Cut manual. I'd advise doing a lot of back-ups before proceeding with anything else at this point, because it really looks like there is going to be a lot of trial-and-error in the near future... mostly error. Good luck with it all.
