Send to iDVD

Im using fairly hi-res photos in a slideshow that I want to send to iDVD, but the result in iDVD appears to be 640x480, which looks blocky and defeats the purpose of using hi-res in the first place! How can I get this to work? I hope I don't have to change the size of all my 440+ photos!

I've sent to iDVD a slideshow that I created a couple years ago and when it opened up in a new iDVD project and I played it, there was no blockiness at all from the hi-res photos that I used. When I sent to iDVD my newest slideshow, the new iDVD project, when played, showed blockiness. The only difference between the old slideshow and the new is that the old contains no images higher than resolution 3072x2048, whereas most of the photos in the new slideshow have a resolution of 4288x2848. Does this imply that there is a photo dimensions limit that when sent to iDVD results in a slideshow that isn't blocky?
I'd create the slideshow in iDVD but the encoded result has still the same blockiness and the audio cuts out momentarily after 99 photos, which, although a limitation in iDVD's slideshows, is definitely not acceptable in my final version!

Why is the "Send to iDVD" command missing from the share menu in iPhoto 9.4.3 when trying to send a slideshow to iDVD?

How come the "Send to iDVD" command is missing from the share menu? In iPhoto I used to be able to send my slideshows to iDVD simply my clicking on the slideshow, selecting the "Share" menu at the top and going to "Send to iDVD". Now in iPhoto 9.4.3 that option is missing.
Further i am also using iDVD 7.1.2 and running OSX version 10.8.3.

Export the slideshow via the Export button at the bottom of the slideshow window with Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, choose a theme and drag the exported movie file to the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Slideshow in iphoto, once shared send to idvd, becomes lower quality

I made a slideshow in iphoto 8.1.2 that looks great, using the "snapshot" theme. I need to be able to play this in a regular dvd player attached to a tv. I hit share > send to idvd.
In idvd 7.0.4, I set up my menu page (used "shelves" theme), set my show to loop and then previewed everything, and the resolution looks like crap compared to the original slideshow from iphoto. I haven't even put it on a dvd yet, because I figure if the resolution looks worse in idvd preview than in iphoto preview, I need to resolve that before burning.
Within idvd, my project preferences are set to ntsc, professional quality encoding, and single layer dvd type. I just noticed now my preferred dvd burning speed is set to maximum possible, so maybe that's the problem. But before I try again, is there anything else I should do differently to maintain the original image quality from iphoto?
My knowledge level of both macs and ilife is very basic, so please keep that in mind with any replies.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about the loss in resolution when working with slide shows within iDvd. You're not the first member on this forum to experience this. It's the nature of the beast (sorry to say) when working with Standard Definition and then burning to Dvd-R. iDVD makes DVDS, which are by definition "standard definition" / SD. 'Send to iDVD" from iPhoto problems - photos don't show up properly

When I send photos/albums from iPhoto to iDVD using the function: Share->Send to iDVD' iDVD opens up, but the screen is blank in iDVD, the project info shows the photos are there, but there is nothing playing - just the blank screen.
When I do the same action on our Tiger iMac it works as advertised, not so on our Leopard iMac.
All software is up to date - iDVD 08, iPhoto 7.1.4

Thank you. It doesn't actually "fail" in that it crashes or comes up with any error messages etc. It just doesn't show anything in the screen. I have pasted the Console entries that came up when I sent album to iDVD - can't see much evidence in there but you might?

IPhoto-Share-send to iDVD, errors everytime

the SHARE > send to iDVD starts to process, and results in an ERROR window everytime. I have tried a basic slide show & the special Photobook slideshow...
nothing works. Prompt help is GREATLY appreciated.

Adobe CS (works fine)
LightScribe (does not work)...help with this also appreciated

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have a folder in your User folder titled Movies? If not then that's the reason. iPhoto looks for that folder to save the Quicktime file into as it imports into iDVD.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. "send to iDVD" frustrations

I'm spent many hours the last few days creating a Keynote presentation for our 5th Grade Recognition. Finally finished it with a total of approximately 190 slides. When I had been "testing" export with a very small test file, I used the export settings and then set up the Quicktime settings.
When I finally completed the Keynote, I decided to try the "send to iDVD" option. I cleared the two timing boxes so that it would follow the timings/transitions exactly how they had originally been set up in Keynote. I'm very frustrated with the results when placed into iDVD and burned to disk.
The quality of the actual movie file on the iDVD was great, but the menu navigation is a nightmare! I must have set something up incorrectly somewhere, because it imported into iDVD with each slide being it's own "chapter". It took 3 hours just to "process the menus"--since it now has 33 menus with 6 slides in each menu. However, even these "slide" links don't work on the playable DVD. If someone actually uses the "scene selection" option and navigates to the specific slide that they wanted does nothing but take them to the opening menu again (in this case, I had chosen the "Theater" theme, so it takes them to the sliding curtain screen). Each of every one of the 190ish slide links take you back to the menu--none of them take you to the slide itself!
Now when you just hit "play" in the main menu, things work terrific. The "movie" plays with all transitions and just hitting "next" arrow on the DVD remote will take you to the next slide. Ignoring the remote allows the entire slideshow to play through on it's own timing with all transitions in tact.
Where did I go wrong that caused it to create so many menus with none of the slide links working correctly? I just wanted it to be a one button selection to play the movie.
Is this always the intended result when choosing the "send to iDVD" choice instead of exporting and choosing the Quicktime export settings myself?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I went back into iDVD and looked at the DVD map. The opening menu (sliding curtain) forks off into 2 lines. The top one links to the .mov file.
The bottom one (2nd) forks into 32 "menu"/sliding curtain, with the last one being an actual slide icon. Each of the 32 menu/sliding curtain icons then fork into 6 slide icons.
By looking at the map, it would appear that the links should be set to properly go the correct slide when chosen in the "scene selection". I'm not sure why choosing any slide is just taking you back to (or on to the next) menu/sliding curtain icon.
So theoretically, it appears that it should work "correctly", even though I would still prefer just the "movie" and not each slide being it's own chapter.

Slideshow timing changes after sending to iDVD--why?

After much work, I finally got my slide show perfectly synchronized to the lyrics of the song being used, then exported to iDVD. I made no adjustment or changes in iDVD other than choosing & customizing the opening menu theme (which is separate from & has no bearing on show). I was horrified to discover that the timing changed, throwing off the image/lyric sync, which is crucial to the "story" of the show.
If all the iLife apps are supposed to be so tightly integrated, why does this happen???

I wonder if you can have iPhoto make the QuickTime movie of your slideshow, and if it would preserve your timings, and would that stick when sending to iDVD.
This sounds like a job for QuickTime Kirk....

Error sending to idvd

I created several slideshows in iphoto 5.0.4 and when i clicked 'send to idvd' i got an error message 'the export movie file could not be created.' what's going on? i now also get this message with slideshows that i was able to send to idvd in the past.

no, i'm not running norton. i tried deleting the iphoto preferences file and that didn't work either. it's weird. the only unusual thing i did was sign up for an itunes account and buy some music.

Send to iDVD hyperlinks not active

I'm trying to make my hyperlinks active so someone can put my DVD into their computer and click around. When I send to iDVD and then preview it in iDVD, my hyperlinks are not active. Is there something I'm missing?

No, Keynote doesn't have the ability to author content such that it will create a DVD with hyperlinks. The export for DVD is just to send the video of a linear presentation.

Specifying "Send to iDVD" folder ??

When I choose "Send to iDVD" under the "Share" menu, it begins to send my slideshow to the Movies folder on my main HD. I do not have enough room open on that drive and would like to change the folder that "Send to iDVD" uses so it will use a folder on my 2nd internal HD. Is there a way to specify which folder this operation will use?

Why is it everytime I "Send to iDVD" a slideshow, then when iDVD launches,
an old Slideshow loads, (including photos in the Drop zones, etc.)
why won't it give me a fresh screen with blank Drop Zones etc.?

It will (or at least it should) if your drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash.
drag and drop the plist for iDVD to the trash and empty the trash (then Restart the computer). Pref's look like this:
com.apple.iDvd.plist
(copy and paste the above item & please use the Finder to locate these pref's on your system).
If the above fails to address this issue, then please also Repair Permissions using Apple's Disc Utilities. Good luck and Hope this Helps.

IMovieHD or iMovie 08 for making slideshow to send to iDVD?

Is there any quality difference (in algorithms etc) when making a slideshow to send to iDVD?
I am making a short movie to burn to a DVD and really like the updated tools in iMovie 08 (easier Ken Burns in my opinion) but iMovie 08 can't really do chapters (and I NEED chapters). Can I make an "outline" of the iMovie in iMovie HD (with all the songs and chapters laid out) and then import it to iMovie 08 to do the slides? Will there be any difference in the final product, or is just the interface different (but the way a jpg is processed the same)?

Sound is lost when exporting or sending to iDVD

My project has sound in iMovie (8), but when I (a) export to Quicktime, or (b) send to iDVD, the sound is lost. I presume that some box hasn't been checked, but I've no idea what it can be

Well, I did this: I made a copy of the project, and then exported to Quicktime, and the sound was there! Then I sent the duplicated project to iDVD, and the sound was there as well!
This is not really satisfying, because I didn't discover what the original problem was - unless it's just a 'feature' of iMovie 09 that some projects need to be duplicated in this way.
(By the way, I've read that there are three check boxes in Timeline view (and that they all need to be checked), but I've no idea where they are.)

Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t. The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
