Sending a message to a Mac in my LAN?

Hi,
I know the 'talk' utility but that need the other party to start talk (or at least have a Terminal session open), too.
I want to send a text message, a short string (typically one-liner) immediately to another Mac's screen here in my LAN. Just like the "net send" thingy on Windows.
I'm sure there's a way or some nice open source tool, right? Need a pointer because my googling wasn't very successful, yet.
Thanks a lot!
Stefan.

  • How to send instant messages from my mac

I would like to know if it's possible to send instant messages to a cell phone from my mac..

Depends on the standards supported by your cell phone. Skype does exist for PowerPC.
iChat supports ICQ and AOL instant messaging as well Jabber based chat standards. If you can get one of these, you can go through iChat.
And finally for Twitter, some options on this article:

  • How do i send sms messages from my mac to a phone

the gurl from apple said i could send sms messages from my imac to a phone. How do i di that?

    Hi Lanny,
Actually those two pics don't tell you what you need to know.
The First is correct as it can be from the Messages app but the second goes to no way to tell you how to do and b fact does not even mention SMS messages.

You will need to have an AIM or AIM Valid name that you can add to the Messages > Preferences > Accounts at the + icon below the list.
Next the Mac need to be in the United States.
Go to System Preferences > Language and Text and set the Region to the Untied States.
(In iChat this added SMS items to some of the Menus in iChat)
The iPhone has to be on a Carrier that is in the United States   See list
Which in turn means the phone number is a United States one (+1 country code)
This means you add the Cell/mobile number as if it were a Buddy to an AIM list.
So Creating an Address Card for "SMS Test" and adding the mock number +1234567890 to that I get this in Messages  (Mousing over the Name to see the "Screen Name" which is the number in this case)
Basically this is a feature that iChat has always had since AIM included a link to SMS to certain Phones.
Messages does everything iChat did/does and this includes SMS Messaging via an AIM Buddy list even though in this case the Menu items has disappeared.
AS has been said there are also other methods.

  • My husband and I share an iTunes account. I just got a mac, but everything I send by message from the mac appears to come from his phone. How do I correct this?

My husband and I share the itunes account. I just got an iMac. Everytime I send a message from my iMac, it appears to come from my husband's account phone number. Is there any way to fix this? Also, when I open iMessages, all the texts are from his phone (his text conversations).
Thank you so much for your help!
    Myrna

    Try This:
Open up the imessage app on your Imac.  Once you have it opened go to top left corner of your screen next to the apple picture and the word MESSAGES appears. Click on it then click on preferences and uncheck your husbands phone and number and or any other numbers which are checked. I had same problem this fixed it. Also if you wanted to you can open up your own Apple account, but that's not really necessary. My wife and I both share the same as you do

This is with Firefox 16. The previous version worked just fine

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

I think you need to wait on this for iOS 8.1.  Apple Messaging works now, but via SMS you need your phone linked.

  • How can I get TB in my Mac to ask me before sending the messages in Outbox?

Something has changed and TB is now sending the messages I created to Send Later (which are in the Outbox) without asking me as soon as I re-connect to a network (i.e., it correctly stores it into the Outbox but if my laptop loses the network-- because for example I close it to go home -- as soon as it reconnects it sends all messages without asking me).
I have a Mac and I cannot find the Advanced > Network & Disc Space settings that (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1004514) indicates as the solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • I can no longer receive e-mail messages through my @mac/@me account. I can still send e-mail messages, though. I believe there may have been recent attempts to hack into my account. I have changed my password, but wonder how to start receiving mail again?

I can no longer receive e-mail messages through my @mac/@me account, though I still seem to be able to send messages. I believe there may have been recent attempts to hack into my Mail account (my LinkedIn and Facebook accounts were both hacked three days ago and a scam/phishing message sent to my contacts, and I know there was at least an attempt made to hack into one of my e-mail accounts). I have already changed my Apple password, but how do I start receiving mail again?
(And I should also say that I'm a little surprised there was no alert from Apple of suspicious activity on my account, if such was the case. Instead, when I logged into my account via Mobile Me three days ago I noticed that all messages in my inbox were gone as well as all of my contacts. I assume this was related to the current problem.)
    Thanks for all responses.

The problem has been solved with the help of a MobileMe online counsellor. My MobileMe account had in fact been hacked into and the fraudster had been redirecting my e-mail messages to a phony account that he controlled. We took the forward off and reset all my passwords and security questions, which solved the immediate problem.
    Thx.

  • After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I see my buddy, but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

It is not available in Mail any longer (for quite a while, now).
You can add a rule to have Mail mark them as junk, or you could possibly log onto your Email provider's web site and block that address.
