Sending a Photoshop image to iPhoto

This sounds like something that should be easy but I am having a problem. I created an image in Photoshop and want to place it in my iPhoto library. Help

What is the format of the PS file that you save to the desktop. Does it contain an alpha layer? As long as it is a .psd, .jpg, .tif or one of the other image formats iPhoto should be able to import it. However, alpha layers don't play well with iPhoto.
In PS's preferences be sure to set the File Handling preferences to: Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility - Always.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Photoshop is not a format.  It's an application.
What you are looking at are not true JPEGs, just iPhoto's "tease" representations of the hidden images it swallowed, as explained above.

  • How do i preserve RAW images in iphoto

I store my Canon Raw images in iphoto.
But when I retrieve them for printing they have turned into jpegs.
How do I turn them back into RAW images so I can play with them?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor.
Next, in the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced tab check the box at 'Use Raw when using External Editor'.
Now, when you send a pic to Photoshop it's the Raw that will go there.
*Note: When you've finished processing the Raw you must save it to the desktop and then import it to iPhoto again.*

  • RAW images in iPhoto

I have just began shooting in RAW and don't see anyway in iPhoto to convert them. What am I missing?
Is it worth having iPhoto '11 ?

    Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • Reverse & Print Image from iPhoto?

How do I reverse/flip an image and print it from iPhoto?
I tried another way as well....I have been able to save to desktop from iphoto....view in Preview & flip that image using Preview Tools, but I am unable to print the reversed image from Preview.
So, the ultimately question remains...*Can you reverse an image in iPhoto and print it?*
    Thanks!

Below is the thread you suggested that I follow. I was able to set Preview as the external editor, flip the image and save it to iPhoto. The image is now correct when I view it from iPhoto. However, when I try to print the edited image, which is still under the preview option, it pulls the original image from iPhoto.
How do I print the edited version of the image?
    Thanks!
"The easiest way to do this is in the Tools menu in Preview. You can set Preview as an external editor, or use an image editor for the job.

  • How can I create a negative from image in iPhoto

I wish to create a negative from an image in iPhoto so I can print as if the negative. Is it possible to do this in iPhoto?

  • Why can't I send older RAW files from iPhoto to Adobe Camera RAW?

I have a 20" Intel iMac (OS  X 10.5.8) and use iPhoto '09 (Version 8.1.2) for storing and organizing the digital images produced by my Nikon D200 and D700 cameras. When I wish to edit a photo I right click on the image and select Edit in External Editor. The external editor is Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac.
In iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced for RAW Photos I have checked "Use RAW when using external editor." Recently I successfully sent new D200 and D700 RAW images from iPhoto to PSE 6 for conversion by Adobe Camera RAW (Version 5.4.0.57). However, I was not successful in attempting to do the same thing with older D200 RAW images taken more than three years ago. In all cases what showed up in ACR were JPEGs rather than the RAW images. I don't understand why this is happening. What is needed to resolve this issue? Any remedial information will be appreciated.

Well all of that tells us that the Library is sound and not corrupt - which is good news.
Now the question would seem to be 'Why isn't iPhoto respecting the settings you've chosen in the Preferences?"
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • .CR2 Files not recognized by Photoshop, Bridge, or iPhoto

I am a photographer shooting in Raw with my Canon Rebel T1i. I used to Import the images into iPhoto for editing and organization. But a few moths ago while importing the images (usually shows a preview of the photos) It just showed black... Then when i tried to edit the photos they wouldn't load. I can see the thumbnails inside of iPhoto but when I go to edit them... they wont load. So I tried to open the images using Bridge&Photoshop... I imported new images from my SD card into Bridge... the thumbnails of the images don't show up. It just shows white with  a shutter on it... and it says 'file name'.CR2
When I double click on the images (supposed to open the image in Photoshop RAW ) Photoshop opens, looks like its about to start... then says "photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
Im not sure what to do... I've been looking around on different forums and it looks like I may be missing a Driver or some kind of Plug-in... But i dont know how to find out what Im missing or where to get it... Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What part of not supported don't you understand?
If a camera is not supported by the latest version of ACR, it will not be supported by the free Adobe DNG Converter either.
ACR and the DNG Converter are always released in tandem and they support the same camera models.

  • [CS3 JS] Getting information about Photoshop images in InDesign

    Hello,
Through an InDesign script I can get many pieces of information about an image such as the file name, resolution in PPI, dimension in inches, color mode, etc.
What I am wondering is if it is possible to find out how many layers a Photoshop image may have. I would like a quick way to know if an image has been flattened (one layer) without having to open up the image in Photoshop.
    Tom

You can do this via BridgeTalk, here is an example. Select a TIF or PSD image and run the script.
    const gScriptName = "Get number of layers";
    const gScriptVersion = "1.0";
    var gLayersNumber;
    Main();
    //===================================== FUNCTIONS  ======================================

  • Can't drag or import images into iPhoto

For some reason, I can't drag images into iPhoto or importing by going to "Add t olibrary"
As opposed to many people I have no problems draggin in jpgs from my computer, but I can't bring in images that iPhoto has sored from my didigtal camera.
In other words, when I import pictures from my digital camera (a regular Sony camera) it imports them no problem, and then stores them in separate folders. But if I ever want to grab images from those folders and drag them back into iPhoto it won't let me.

Try making a direct shortcut to the Organizer and then the Editor.
You should then be able to drag and drop on to the desktop icon.
On Windows right click on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
    Browse to Computer OS C:
And find the PSE Organizer application in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on Windows 7 - 64 bit.
Inside the Adobe >> Photoshop Elements Organizer (yellow folder) you are looking for an application file “PhotoshopEementsOrganizer” with six small icons (e.g. representing thumbnails - could be different in PSE5 but look for the exe file)
    Select it and click OK
    Click next
Rename by taking out Photoshop Elements leaving just the word Organizer
    Then click finish
You should now be able to launch directly form the desktop by double clicking on the icon.
You can set up a similar direct link to the Editor application.

  • Is it possible to migrate windows photoshop files to Iphoto on mac

not sure if photoshop or iphoto is way to go on newly purchased MAC. Want to migrate Photoshop files from Windows system. Seeking advice
    Thank you

Photoshop is a high end image editor whereas iPhoto is a database driven DAM (digital asset management) application with some editing capabilities. There are not the same.
As already pointed out you can use Photoshop from within iPhoto as an editor. The following describes how:
Using Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 9 as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s  I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Edit Photos:  in iPhoto".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.
