Sending an email to a group using Mail

Hi,
On my mac, to send an email to a group, I just type in the name of the group in my address book and all the emails pop up instantly. However, this doesn't happen when sending an email on my iPhone. Is there a way to send group emails using my iPhone? I have the address book synced so all my contacts and groups are in the address book on the iPhone the same as my mac. Thanks

Not directly using the Mail app, no. There are 3rd party apps that provide that function, for example:

  • When sending an email to a group, how do I select the entire group, or certain people in the group, without having to select each individually?

I have tried all possible shortcuts, and nothing seems to work.

    Hello C. Stephen Stewart,
I understand that you would like to send email to a group using Mail on your Mac. Please refer to the attached link for steps and information on this process.
Address an email message - Mail Help
    Use a group address
If you regularly send messages to the same set of people, you can create a group for them in the Contacts app. Then just type the name of the group in the address field of your message; Mail sends your message to each group member at the email address specified in Contacts.
To prevent individual email addresses from being shown when you send messages to groups, choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, then deselect “When sending to a group, show all member addresses.”
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • How do I send an email to a group address using my iPad

I use and IPad Air 2 with latest IOS and am trying to send and email to a group.  How do I do this?  I simply type in the group name when I'm sending the message from my iMac, however that doesn't work on my iPad.  I have the group set up on my iCloud account and have that account selected on my iPad, still when I type in the group name, nothing comes up.  Suggestions?

I Might have worked this out! Go into contacts, tap add. When the box comes up put the name of the group you want to create as the first and last names. In Add email box neR the first email address, then tap add email address again and add another email address, continue until you have entered all the email addresses for the group. When finished tap Done.
Open email and in the To, Cc or Bcc box key in the name of the group. All email addresses should then receive the email when you tap send.
this works for me on my iPad air 2.
THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME YESTERDAY AND TODAY!

I can see how you do that when using the 'normal' emailing system from my mailing box, but not when working from the contact application (the 'book' on the bottom icon bar with the @ on it)....

Why can't I send an email to a "group" if I have a group in my address book??

You are not doing anything wrong. Unfortunately, that's just the way that the built in mail app works. It really is a basic no frills mail app with not much to offer compared to other apps.
There are third party apps that let you create groups and email to those groups. I don't use either of these, but I've seen them recommended here in the past.

Use BCC.   That's blind carbon copy.   And copy paste the address into the BCC field.  It really depends what e-mail program you use how to enable BCC.

how can I send an email to a group in my address book, but hide the individual names and email addresses?

You used to be able to do this through leaving unchecked the box in preferences "when sending to a group show all member addresses". However, that feature failed some time ago (two or three years?) and the only way to hide the addresses now is to put the group in the BCC field.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I have this problem too. I've always sent messages successfully via bcc to a group using a group email list in contacts. Now ... all of a sudden when I select the same group for bcc nothing happens! Cannot email my group now. Why not?

Shootist007, I think Cdf15 wants each recipient to see his/her own email address.
Cdf15, you can't quite do what you asked with Mail alone, but you can come close with a slight variant of what Shootist007 recommended. Just put a dummy address (perhars the sender's) in the To field and all recipient addresses in the Bcc field. That way, no recipient sees either the other recipients' addresses or their own.

  • My house address shows up when I send an email to my daughters' G-mail account.

My house address shows up when I send an email to my daughters' G-mail account.  How do I stop Mail from sending this information?  I don't want this going out to every person I send an email message to - I'll add it when I want to.
Note:  It doesn't show up when I send an email to myself.  My daughter said that it shows up on the right side of screen in her G-mail account...apparently an area where she is used to seeing advertisements?!

This is Redvax1 again....I found the answer.
In the Apple Preferences under "Security" - There is a check box for "Location Services".  I had it turned on.
It turns out that G-Mail will pick this up and show your current address in a sidebar of the recipients email.
I turned it off, and it appears to have solved the mystery.
BEWARE TO THOSE OF YOU WHO CHERISH THEIR PRIVACY OR ARE HIDING FOR WHATEVER REASON -  YOU MAY GIVE YOURSELF AWAY IF YOU SEND AN EMAIL WITH "LOCATION SERVICES" TURNED ON!

  • TS1627 Please Help. I received 4 emails from 1 person with the same message heading. The emails were automatically grouped by Mail. I replied to the latest mail in the conversation. Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM

Please Help. I received 4 emails from 1 person with the same message heading. The emails were automatically grouped Apple Mail. I replied to the latest mail in the conversation. Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM BACK! They all had very important attachments. I have tried looking for them in deleted items, even though I didn't throw any of them away, still cant find them. Never had this problem before. I'm pretty sure its a setting somewhere. Also tried expanding all conversations, no luck. Searching for the mails under the sent email address, no luck.
I'm sure they are not deleted but have somehow been hidden by Mail. Very frustrating.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Kash.

I have found found out what has happened. I had requested a statement dating back to April 2012 from a supplier. They replied back with the latest statementof 2013 only but used the same subject heading as the previous monthly statements. Apple Mail automatically grouped these and I thought that they were sent altogether. As soon as I replied to the last email all other the previous emails ungrouped from the conversation leaving me lost as to where they had gone. They were all still sitting in my inbox but no longer part of the trcked conversation. I searched under the subject heading and all individual mails were all still there. (feeling stupid - )
