Sending attachments as icons only

Hi
Fairly new to apple so I may be missing something very obvious but...I wonder if anyone has any ideas on how I can make sure any attachments I send remain as icons rather than the attachment being open when it is received. Some people I have sent attachments to have said that as soon as the message is recieved the attachment is open.
Is there a way of ensuring the attachments are received as icons and then they can be opened by the recipient?
I have clicked on the "view as icon" before I send the message but this doesn't seem to help.
Thanks.

How a recipient's e-mail program receives and displays attachments is entirely up to the recipient. There's not much you can do other than to ask your recipients to configure their own e-mail programs to their liking.

  • Sending attachments as icons and not an immediately viewable picture.

    Hi folks
How can I send an attachment as a folder +icon + file size etc. At the present time when I attach a photo it shows up as a big photo on the email. I want it to show up UNOPENED as a document etc ie jpeg icon + size etc. How can I change this?
    TIA
    Wokka

Basically, this function is not controllable by you -- it is the recipients' email client that will elect or not elect to View in Place (also called Inline View). Although you are seeing the attached photo files with View in Place, they are nonetheless true attachments, and many email clients receiving the message will show the Icon and size, and some will both do that, and provide View in Place.
Don't sweat it -- if you don't want to see as you continue to Compose, Control-click on any file that is viewing in place, and choose View as Icon. But this has no influence on how sent.
If you zip, then recipients will be forced to Unzip, will at first not see the icon you are talking about.

  • E-mail attachments appear as viewable page- want icon only

I send many e-mails a day with word and pdf attachments to them, to clients.  Two things I struggle with and hope to solve.
1- I use the Mac mail system.  When I attach a document, sometimes only the icon shows, and sometimes the whole page shows.  From reading other posts, it looks like if the attachment is only 1 page, the whole page shows on my screen.  I DO NOT want that.  I print my e-mails for my files and when the whole page shows, an e-mail that should be 1/2 a page turns into a 4-page e-mail.  A waste of paper and space in my files.  How do I make all the attachments appear as icons?  I have tried right click, "show as icon" and that makes only the icon show on the screen, but when I print the e-mail, the entire page of 1-page attachments print (although smaller), making the e-mail way too long.  HELP!
2- is there a way, when I attach files, for them to appear in a separate line at the top of the message, like for windows/outlook users?  I absolutely hate that whereever my cursor is at the time I do the attachment, that's where the attachment goes to.  I often compose e-mail and then go back to revise something, forget to move the cursor, attach, have to delete, and go back and reattach.
Also I get Windows users who get very confused by my e-mails and keep replying and saying there was no attachment.  I don't know where attachments show up on the other end but I'm getting issues with that, too.
Thank you to any one who can give me solutions!

This is easy enough to do on any individual message. I think the trick most people are looking for is how to make this a default on ALL messages.

    From that link:
Turn off automatic attachment preview in Mail
Mail, by default, provides a preview of attachments in can read, such as graphics and PDF files. However, you can run a command in Terminal to turn this off. Run the following:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
Quit Mail and relaunch it. When you view a message, all attachments will be shown as icons only.
To restore the original functionality, run this command:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool no

If this was NetWare I would say that it sounds like a Winsock issue...
There was something about this with the March 08 release of GW7.0.3 but
it was fixed in the 7.0.3 HP1 - which of these two are you using?

  • Mail automatically sending attachments - ON ITS OWN!

So, When I write an email and send an attachment, everything is fine. Then, when I send the next email, with NO attachment, email sometimes takes the last attachment I sent and sends it. It ONLY does this AFTER I hit the "send" button, so.... I have no way of telling if THIS time is going to be the time that mail automatically sends an attachment.
This has been very embarrassing because two times today clients of mine have received zips of files, including source files, that belong to ANOTHER CLIENT! Imagine being afraid to send an email because you are not sure if mail is going to attach a random attachment!!
Please help! --> if it is of any help, when I drag an attachment to my mail icon in the dock, it opens two new email messages, but might be unrelated. Please help me understand what is going on!

Please help me understand what is going on!
What, you want wisdom as well as solutions? Not that I have either to offer, only a couple of suggestions.
If you are using that second new mail message that opens, don't- delete it and start a real new one. I would also suggest not dragging a file to the Mail icon as there are known issues with this, and you might be experiencing a strange side effect. Before clicking send, disconnect from the network. Your outgoing message will land up in the Outbox where you can check it and if necessary remove any attachments. When you reconnect the message will go.

  • Force Mail (Yosemite) to display all attachments as icons all the time?

In Yosemite, I need to get rid of Mail's previews of attachments that appear in outgoing email as the previews seem to cause problems for some of my mail recipients. How can I force Mail to display all attachments as icons? Currently the only way is to right click each attachment every time - it's a waste of time to do this all day long.

Mail only previews single-page documents. They should be simply an attachment to the recipient. If they are problematic, then be sure you select the Edit menu, Attachments > Always send Windows friendly .... If there is still a problem then compress the attachment before sending it - CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Compress from the context menu.

  • Mail can no longer send attachments

Mail recently lost the ability to send attachments.  If I drag an image, PDF, etc. in to the composer, it shows up as an icon with a filename below it, but clicking on the link results in a dialog that says "The file xxx could not be opened because it is empty".  Attachments used to just show up inline and send properly.  I'm not sure when this behavior started, but I can't seem to get attachments to work any more.  Even if I right-click on a JPG and share via email, the attachment created is empty.  What's going on?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Update...  I tried all of the recommended solutions for resetting user permissions and ACLs, none of which solved the problem.  I finally relented to re-installing the Mountain Lion upgrade and that fixed whatever was keeping Mail from adding attachments.  One notable change is that when I was having the problem adding attachments, I would see warnings in the console from sandboxd complaining that Mail was missing file_read_xattr and file_read_data for the files I was trying to attach.  Now that attachments work again, I don't see those messages.  Perhaps something was hosed with Mails runtime configuration with sandboxd?

  • Can't Send Attachments Using Exchange Account

For some reason I can't send attachments using my Exchange account on my iPhone. Pictures, Word docs, Excel Docs, doesn't matter. They just get stuck in my out box and I get the following message, "Cannot Send Mail - An error occurred while delivering this message." I can receive attachments just fine, but cannot send or forward them. If I use any of the other email accounts on my phone, it works fine. The Exchange account is the only issue. Is this some limitation with Exchange on an iPhone or something? Anyone ever have the same problem as was able to fix it? Thanks!

I've got 38 iPhones deployed running the 3.1.2 OS against an Exchange 2007 server. Several of my users complain about the same issue, and I've seen it myself. I have found a workaround of sorts - I've found that if I've sent a message with an attachment and I get a failure to send, if I manually browse down to the Sent Items folder, that forces a replication of the Sent Items. The next time I do a manual sync, the e-mail with the attachment will go.
I presume this has something to do with Exchange trying to put a copy of the e-mail in to your Sent Items at the same time the iPhone is trying to send the message.
Potentially, this might be solved by turning off the option to always store your sent e-mails in the Sent Items. I have not yet tested that as a workaround as from a corporate standpoint and an ease-of-use standpoint, we want that e-mail in the Sent Items for reference.
If anyone has any success with this fix, please let me know.

  • Email attachments as icons

Is this the only real solution for email attachments as icons: download and install the attachment tamer plug-in: http://lokiware.info/Attachment-Tamer

If you would rather not see the attachment preview by default when you add attachements to your Mail documents:
Launch Terminal, and then type or paste the following command after the prompt:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
Once you do that, quit Mail and relaunch it, or just start it up if it wasn’t running already. Now, when you look at messages with attachments, you’ll just see an icon. Double click on it as per usual to bring it up in the associated application, like Preview or Word.
To change it back to the way it was, simply run the following command:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool no
When you relaunch Mail again, you’ll see attachments with their visual previews again.
