Sending audio samples to midi controller

i have logic pro 8 and i was wondering how to send chopped up samples of an audio file to my midi controller which is an axiom 49. for example, i wanna chop up some vocals and instrument loops from a song called dazed and confused to create a hip hop song and i ve seen it done before on youtube just wondering how to do it.

Not sure what you mean by sending audio samples to your MIDI controller. Maybe you'd like to play or trigger these samples from your controller? One way is to cut them up (lots of ways to do this in Logic) and then assign the resultant bits of audio as samples in the EXS sample player. You can also assign these samples in Ultrabeat.
You'll need a basic familiarity with editing in Logic, as well as some fundamental knowledge of the EXS sampler or Ultrabeat.

  • USB 3.0 audio interface and MIDI controller

I´ve got the Macbook Pro Retina (2012) with only USB 3.0 ports. Today, i learned that no audio interface beneeth xxxx$ is compatible with this standard, and will only work with USB 2.0. I´ve also got Thunderbolt ports, but those audio interfaces are just as expencive and far out of my league. Same goes for MIDI controllers.
Is there any way to come around this problem? There seems to be a lack of information regarding this issue around the internet. I want to buy the Balance audio interface for Propellerheads Reason, but I get the feeling it´s not going to work (at least thats what the guy at the local store told me).
USB 2.0 hubs are also not going to work, as far as I know. Any ideas?

    Okay everyone,
As I wasn't able to solve the problem myself, I decided to replace my old interface for a brand new one. The problem clearly was the age of the old interface.
In a particular music store I was allowed to test four individual USB audio interfaces that worked perfectly on both 10.9 and W7.
For those interested, I now use a Roland Quad-Capture (UA-55) which has great preamps!

edit - sorry, just read that you tried the midisport-firmware package.  I would see if a windows machine will run it.  If you have a key lying around, run a virtualbox vm and use the usb pass-through capability of the oracle plug-in.  Or ... just windows on a machine, depending on what you're comfortable with.
I'll try to do that as soon as I can, although I think it won't work because my kernel doesn't seem to recognize the device, therefore, it shouldn't appear in virtualbox...

  • USB MIDI Controller no longer working after Logic 8 upgrade

Hello, my M-Audio O2 USB MIDI Controller worked brilliantly with Logic Pro 7 after simply plugging it in. I never needed to install any drivers or do any setup. Now, after upgrading to Logic Pro 8 it isn't recognized and does not work. Does anyone know what's going on and can anyone please give me some advice on how to fix this problem? Thanks

Go to Logic-Pro beside the Apple Logo at the top of your screen to the Left,
    then Preference,
    then scroll to Control-Surface settings,
    now select set-up
From there delete and then reinstall your control-Surface, do it manually as the Scan doesn't work all the time,

  • Macbook Pro OSX 10.7.2 and Oxygen61 Midi Controller Keyboard

Question 1.  I thought this midi device (M-Audio Oxygen61 USB Midi Controller  was "Plug & Play"?  It does play but none of the keyboard's slides or knobs have any effect on adjusting anything,  I have attempted to "Download the Drivers" from the M-Audio site.
I am new to Macs (Former PC user) and don't know if I am doing something wrong, or where to go next?
Question 2. If you open an iTunes song in garageband and drag it over as a track to play along with, how would I go about transposing (May not be the proper term) the keyboard to match the exact pitch or key of the song being played from the iTune file appearing as a track?  I was able to do this with a PC.  Is garageband capable of this?  Suggestions if not?

Saw my old post...LOL. I returned the MacBook and bought a PC shortly after this post.

Req any examples of how to use a USB midi controller/keyboards with Labview TIA

    Hi,
To access the MIDI ports you will need to call the Windows SDK. To send MIDI commands is relatively easy, here is an example that shows you how to send data to a MIDI controller or keyboard.
As far as input goes, this is the hard part. There are a series of functions that you need to call to open up the device, set some buffers and and possibly a callback to get notifications on the incoming data.
Reading MIDI data will not be an easy task, your best bet will be to implement this in a DLL and call that DLL in LabVIEW, there should be some code available o the web.
= "http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/htm/_win32_multimedia_... is a link to the Windows multimedia functions that you could use for MIDI input.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Is it possible to trigger an audio sample via a midi file in logic?

E.G. If i had a midi kick drum track. Could I sample an audio file of a kick drum ?
I knwo this can be done in programs like fruity loops but im not sure if logic has this ability too?

Create a software instrument track. Double click the instrument name in the channel strip to show the Ultrabeat editor. Choose the Ultrabeat instrument and then choose the default setting for importing samples, which can be chosen from Ultrabeat's patch selection menu just like any other software instrument. In the lower right hand corner of the editor you will see a button that says "full view". It chooses between a fruity loops style sequencer view and a drum synth editor view. To import your sample, you need to be in the drum synth edit view. In this view there are three sound source controls which combine to make an ultrabeat sound. The one you need to choose is the sample source in the lower left corner where you should see a picture of a waveform. Double click on the waveform to open Finder, where you can browse for the location of your sample. The name of your sample will then appear on the left side of the editor as one key of a virtual keyboard. Click on the key with your mouse and you should be able to hear your sample playback. Play all the keys / pads on your controller and one of them will trigger your sample through Ultrabeat. You can also trigger ultrabeats pattern sequencer to play the sample from ultrabeat, and then trigger ultrabeats patterns to play in sync with Logic. You can even trigger different ultrabeat patterns using notes from your MIDI controller. Put ultrabeat on several tracks and then switch between tracks while triggering different patterns on each track..while recording it all as a performance in realtime . Check out Ultrabeat. The list goes on.

  • Help in Assigning individual audio samples to specific midi notes?

Hi. This might be unbelievably simple and obvious (but not to me!).
I am wanting to assign/map individual audio samples to individual 'note' or midi events, same kind of set up as how say any of the drum sets work in ultrabeat. I suspect something like this might be possible through ultrabeat dragging samples in to the sample window but I still haven't managed conclusive success.
I'm working with a novation 49 sl compact.
I have searched extensively in the manuals and the discussions and suspect the 'way' I'm thinking about this might be wrong. I'm sure it must be possible and started my search with L7.
Any help/thoughts etc greatly appreciated in advance.

Where there's a will there's a google. And it led me to the macprovideo discussion at the link below
    http://www.macprovideo.com/forum/logic/logic-pro-express&id=5356
which was enough to send me into the right direction.
So I've solved my dilemma by using the exs24 sampler and creating a new key map.
Ain't it always the way? Its only obvious when you know how but hopefully this might help someone else one day.

  • Midi controller / audio interface

hi - After years of working with Cubase on a PC, i have become a brand new mac convert and have just invested in a macbook pro with logic express.
I am looking for recommendations for getting midi in & out of the computer as well as a good audio interface. I play keyboards and will use an external midi sound module for sounds so midi latency (as near as possible to zero) is important as is audio quality and I am looking to buy a new midi controller keyboard. Am i right in thinking that the new breed of keyboards will act as the midi interface too?
Finally if there are any good "starting out" reading resources you can point me to that would be greatfully appreciated!

    Hi Alex,
    Welcome to the Forum!
You already have the solution on the back of your mind,
Most midi keyboard controllers can be pluged via USB to your computer, and act as a midi interface for other modules too,
some of them also have an audio input.
As you don't state any buget, my only advice will go to the audio interface,
each one has it's own preferences, and I'm sure it's going to rain answer on that matter; go for an Firewire interface to audio (USB's weak), also take a look at your internal HD (I believe it's an 5400rpm drive) you need and external HD 7200rpm in that case for audio.
Finally, if the resources you looking are about Le, instead of reading

  • M-audio axiom midi controller

just wondering if anyone out there can walk me through a couple things re: learning the axiom midi controller. works great with garage band but there are some things i'm having trouble figuring out.

GarageBand's control messages are non-standard (they would be, wouldn't they). These are the control messages you need to send for each transport function - the first is when the key is pressed, the second when it is released - possibly just the first would do.
All sent on Channel 1 (I think probably any channel would do):
    RECORD
    Controller 106 127
    Controller 106 0
    Controller 107 127
    Controller 107 0
    SKIP BACK
    Controller 108 127
    Controller 108 0
    PLAY
    Controller 109 127
    Controller 109 0
    SKIP FORWARD
    Controller 110 127
    Controller 110 0
    CYCLE
    Controller 111 127
    Controller 111 0
    JOG FORWARD
    Controller 24 1
    JOG BACKWARD
    Controller 24 127
The control messages for the channel level, pan, etc. are way non-standard - they use things like the breath control instructions - and I think that trying to use the Axiom to do mixing would be very difficult. The only controller that works well for all GB's functions is the iControl, designed specifically for it (but of course you still can't do automated mixing in any case, you can only do that by dragging the automation curves).

  • Please Help. How do I assign a short audio sample to a specific note?

Hi. Happy new year to all!!
If any one can please please offer advise it would help to get my new year off to a much better start.
I am wanting to assign/map individual audio samples to individual 'note' or midi events, same kind of set up as how say any of the drum sets work in ultrabeat.
Is it something to do with ch assignment?
The result I'm looking for is if I hit C0 on my keyboard, I get one sample. If I hit G4 on my keyboard, I get a different sample and so on.
I'm working with a novation 49 sl compact.
I have searched extensively in the manuals and the discussions and suspect the 'way' I'm thinking about this might be wrong. I'm sure it must be possible.
    Is it possible? How?
Any help/thoughts etc greatly appreciated in advance.

    Hi Thanks for that.
Since my posting, I discovered another option, by using the Sampler exs24 and creating a new key map, this seems to be exactly what I was after. Like all things, its straight forward when you know how.
I looked into the ultra beat sampling a bit further as I understood it, before seeing your reply, to discover that the sampler window was about chopping/or linking a sample to a preexisting rhythmic sequence. This was not quite what I was after but I'm interested to look further in to your suggestion which seems a bit of a different thing again.
Where theres a will theres a way and I googled my question leading me to the macprovideo discussion group with the following link:
    http://www.macprovideo.com/forum/logic/logic-pro-express&id=5356
so this was enough to send me in the right direction.
Not being inundated with answers form the forums, your responce is very appreciated.
    Thankyou.

  • Using MIDI controller - Delay (Laten

Im using an M-Audio Radeum6 key controller connected to the computer via USB. The software for the keyboard is installed and working properly. There is a serious delay in sound being generated by my audio software from the midi controller. I realize that MIDI controllers do not generate sound, but notes - and the audio software generates the sound. How can I eliminate the latency? there should be none if everything is working properly. I have an Audigy 2 LS and believe it should be capable of playing the midi controller immediately as the controllers manual says it will. What am I doing wrong? Is there some setting, driver, connection, etc. which is not setup properly?

    noiziman,
The ASIO drivers deals with digital audio signals between the software and the card, and it isn?t related with MIDI signals.
Anyway, it isn't clear from the original question if the delay comes from the MIDI device itself or from the digital audio processing, since for the later he should be using a software synth. If he's using the hardware sampler (i.e. Emu0k processor in internal SB Li've/SB Audigy with SoundFonts), the problem shouldnt have to do with ASIO.
To chek out this, i?d record in a MIDI track the signals received from the MIDI device (with the proper timming it should have, no matter the current latency of the resulting sound), and then i'd inspect the track (or it'ss event list view) looking for the singnals recorded from the controller. If the signals where received on time (that is, the timestamp matches the timestamp of an associated music event), then the latency comes from the synth. With a software synth, the ASIO settings would help with the latency (or a faster computer :-).
But if the timestamp doesn?t fit where theyre supposed to fit, then the delay comes from the MIDI cables or setup. If so, try:
) To increase the "ticks per quarter note" in the MIDI setup for the song (or decrease this, if the problem comes from overloading the MIDI network with signals)
    2) Rewire the MIDI cables, i.e., avoiding chaining this controller trough other devices nor using MIDI THRU. At least i?d try pluging the controller right into the MIDI IN from the soundcard to test the latency.
    3) I don't know that controller, but if it's a synchronized one, try turning off sync (or using another device for sync).
    Hope this hel
    ps.

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

My Evolution MK-249 MIDI controller keyboard is recognised as being on the USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Bus in the System Information window, but is not recognised by GarageBand '11 nor does it appear as a device in Audio MIDI Setup.
