Sending email slows down surfing

Hi there,
This is something that's been bugging me for a while, but I don't know if it is normal behaviour or not. And I can't find anything on the web with a similar description.
Currently on approx 6.5meg download speed, 0.3meg upload.
Say I'm sending a 3mb email (this will take a couple of mins to send) whilst waiting I decide to view something on the web and all the pages loads very slowly (seems to load at about the upload speed rather than download speed).
Is this normal?
Many thanks for any advice!

When you're downloading "stuff" it isn't just pumped down the link willy-nilly.
You could think of it as being sent in chunks, but each chunk has to be ACKnowledged before the next chunk is sent your way.
These ACK's form part of your upload. The sender (the site that you're downloading from) effectively uses the arrival of the ACK packet to pace itself on how fast to send data to the receiver. Fast downloads require not only the download packets to arrive quickly, but also for the ACK packets to get back to the sender in a timely manner
Ordinarily, when you're only downloading, there is nothing else much happening on your upstream, so the ACK's get sent in a timely manner. If, however, you're saturating your upstream by sending eg a large email, then those ACKs may have to queue up along with the rest of the data on your suturated upstream, so your ACK's can be delayed getting back to the remote download server, which can slow down the transmission of data on your downstream.

  • Why have outgoing emails slowed down

    Hi, over the last 5 weeks I and my colleagues have found that sending emails, whether by Entourage or Mail, has slowed down to a snails pace. We have checked out potential problems with our ISP and checked Broadband speed. Our ISP has indicated that they have had other clients calling them to discuss the same thing. We have not changed any system preferences on any machine so cannot understand it. We ran a speed test comparision between a Windows PC and one of the Mac. The PC took 45 seconds to send an email with 3.5mb attachment. The Mac sent the very same email in 3.5 minutes using Entourage and 5 minutes using Mail.
    Has anyone experienced a similar situation. If so have you been able to resolve the problem. If you have I woud be very grateful for any advice in resolving this very frustrating problem.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    You're describing a network problem, not a Mac problem.

  • Cannot get/send email-server down-went to apple store genius bar today-when is it going to be working-this is a huge problem

    have not been able to get/send email for 1 1/2 days now - went to genius bar this morning and was told that THE UNIVERSAL SERVER IS DOWN AND THERE IS NO WAY TO GET TO MY EMAIL - WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE RESOLVED??  Huge issue

    Unless it's confirmed officially that your phone is defective, then you can ask for a replacement. Or you have to live with you. However you can trade it for a new one if you don't care the price drop.

  • Sending mail slowed down

    Last few days, when sending mail, the wheel spins fpr a good 20 to 30 seconds before the router shows sending mail, ie flicking wireless light. Although our speeds are possibly the worlds slowest, it normally starts going straight away. I am on a 384kbps line. ISP is Mweb. They say my line is fine. Line via Telkom. They tell me all is well. Speedtest.net shows ping, .94ms , download , .38Mbps and upload is .11Mbps. It might be my imagination but it could be that when I click ' check mail ' after ' send ' it seems faster. Maybe thats just a timing thing. Any ideas? Thanks, Duncan

    Clicking ' check mail ' makes no difference at all. Whatever I send, the wheel next to' sent' spins first for 35 seconds before 'mail activity' shows it's going. Since new, September '08, it's shown in 'mail activity' and went instantly. Or at least started going instantly, time dependant on size. Everything else is fine. Websites as quick as normal etc.

    That changes things a little bit , login to icloud.com and see if you can find it in your sent folder.
    If it is there you did send, just need to wait until you phone syncs "sent folder" perhaps on wifi.
    If it is not, then I would say it is lost and you may have to send again. They have 20 megs limit, so make sure that message plus attachment is under that limit.

  • Slowing down & weird email

    ok forgive this for a noob topic but my mac has slowed down tremendously. also my isp is aol and I'm getting email from myself. my other emails appear to be fine. any ideas on these two issues?

    Here's some questions for you about the slowing down:
    1) How large is the hard drive
    2) How much space is available on the hard drive?
    3) How much RAM is in the computer?
    4) When did you buy this computer?
    We need more information about the e-mail issue as well--could you give us more details?
    Oh! and one suggestion: change the password you use for this e-mail; it sounds to me like someone is hiding behind your e-mail address to send messages to others. Changing your password might help, if they managed to get access to the e-mail account.

  • Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive?Pls.help.

    Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

    Depending on which email client software you use
    the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
    if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
    Since you don't specify what mail application,
    that would most be associated with the file.
    I notice there are some items to the right of your post
    where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
    look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
    Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
    Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
    Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
    Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Sending email is very slow.

    Even the simplest messages can take forever to send. Sometimes I have to quit mail and try and resend, but even with that it can be very slow to send email. How can I fix this?

    I found this in archived discussions. You response was very unhelpful. Thanks anyway.
    The solution/fix for me was to use different DNS server ip addresses in 10.5's Network control panel.
    Using my ISP's DNS servers, sending email from apple mail 10.5 was slow.
    Using the OpenDNS servers - slow.
    But if I only used Google's DNS numbers, sending email is fast.
    The numbers are: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

  • Outlook 2010 - User tends to open many emails at a go but this may slow down the machine.

    Hi,
    My user tends to have this work habit of opening 8-10 emails at one go. She view this way of working as more efficient and faster. But this means that if outlook crashed, all the emails will be close as well, and this way of working tends to slow down the
    machine.
    Is there any way Outlook can users to open multiple emails without hording CPU page milage?
    Thank you.

    Hi Josh,
    Slow Outlook can be also harmful for your database and there are numbers of factor which slow down the MS-Outlook like:
    * Third Party Plug-ins
    * Slow internet connection
    * Antivirus/ Firewall Programs
    * Corruption or Error within Outlook
    So always try to open Microsoft Outlook in safe mode whenever you stuck in such problems.
    How to optimize Outlook performance:
    * By Disabling add-ins
    * Check default account settings
    * Disabling Scanning programs
    * Scanpst.exe (Inbox Repair Tool)

  • I downloaded the Apple update yesterday and my computer has slowed down plus I can't move emails to my different mailboxes.

    Why has my computer slowed down?  I downloaded the update yesterday and since then the color wheel keeps circling and I can't download or move emails to my different mailboxes.  There is no consistent patern in which emails can be transferred.  There is a consistent patern with the color wheel coming on while I am typing and stoping the recording of the keys.

    Please download, install and run Etrecheck.

  • TS3899 iPhone 5s Mail app shut down automatically when try to send email

    I just set up new iPhone 5s two days ago from iPhone 5.
    Everything works fine except Mail app.
    Due to Mail app, I had to set up new configuation instead of back up from old iPhone 5.
    Mail app works fine 1 day, but after the day after, the mail app shut down automatically when try to send email.
    Just one specific email account has problem. It worked fine on iPhone 5. Same setting on Pop and SMTP. Exactly same~~
    - I did try to reset iPhone 5s pressing home button and sleep button for 10 second. It did not work
    - I did try to reset all information and install iPhone 5s and the problem still exists.
    - I did try to delete specific email account and re-make it, but it did not work
    Funny thing is that if Lanuague is English, then sending email is working. Absolutely no problem.
    However, if Language setting is Korean, then Mail App shut down automatically.
    I'm heavy email maker and if it is very annoying.
    Does anyone have same issue like this?
    I believed it is iOS7 bug?
    Can anyone help me on this???

    Am having similar problems with a new iPad Air. It will recieve email in Mail as directd from my domain email account. It will not send, advising server does not recognise account. I have checked and re checked settings.
    My computer and old iPad work perfectly. Any ideas would be really appreciated.
    By the way sending email directly from the domain email account works perfectly but I prefer using Mail.
