Sending hi res (300 dpi) jpegs from Lightroom 4

I am taking a course on making Christmas decorations. Have been asked to send my images @ 3" x 3", 300 dpi, medium jpeg. We have spent 2 days back and forth with this and I have not been able to complete the Export panel correctly. Can anyone help. Thanks.

Exporting Jpegs from Lightroom - DPI question

When I export Jpegs from Lightroom, I set the dpi to 300 pixels per inch. I do not specify a max width or height. When I view these files in Adobe Bridge (CS2 or CS3) the file info says 300dpi. However, when I open the files in Photoshop and select image size, It says 72dpi and has the document size set to very large. I realize that I can enter 300 dpi and uncheck the resample box, I am just confused as to why this is happening.
My concern is, that I upload my images directly to my lab after exporting from Lightroom. Will this cause problems?

the image resolution is a combination of the two parameters you mention: size and dpi. a very large size at 72 dpi is equivalent to a small size (like 3x5) at very high dpi. for printing you want at least 240 dpi at the largest size that allows you to keep that resolution. for screen presentations or your web site you want jut 72 dpi. 72 dpi and 2x3 inches will require a very small file size.
I suggest you to export images at TIFF and not JPEG as that will allow you to preserve the image quality when doing editing in PS.
In my case I export TIFF for PS (when I need PS editing) and 72 dpi JPEG for my web site (that way if somebody downloads my image illegally thy get a poor resolution copy). But since LR works very well for me 90% of the images re just kept in raw mode and I print from LR.

Save 300 dpi jpegs

I have a tiff file of a painting I scanned at 300 dpi. It's original image size when I open it is photoshop is 57.8 MB, 18" W by 12.477" H, Res 300. I need to resize it and send it as a 300 dpi jpeg. I have started in the image size dialogue box and just change the W to 11.25. That automatically changes the H to 7.798 and the res still says 300. The file size reduces to 22.6 MB. I click ok and then go to save as and choose jpeg. In the jpeg box I chose 12 Max and baseline standard and click ok. The saved file is reduced to 8.5 MB. When I open it in photoshop, it opens at 300 dpi when I look in the image size box. However, when I send it to someone else and they open it, the file is only 72 dpi. What am I missing to get the file to save at 11.25 inches, jpeg, but remain 300 dpi?

I have a tiff file of a painting I scanned at 300 dpi. It's original image size when I open it is photoshop is 57.8 MB, 18" W by 12.477" H, Res 300.
That means you image is 18x300=5400px wide and 12.477x300=3743px high widthxheight=numbed of pixel 3 bytes per pixel for 8bit color 5400x3743x3=60,636,600 which is close to Photoshop 57.8MB estimate or the Tiff file is 57,8MB.
I need to resize it and send it as a 300 dpi jpeg.
Then all you have to do is resize the open document and save a jpeg file.
I have started in the image size dialogue box and just change the W to 11.25. That automatically changes the H to 7.798 and the res still says 300.
That means you also have RESAMPLE and Constrain checked in the Image Size dialog bottom control section and some interpolation method is set. Photoshop will reduce the number of pixels you have for the image. When you click on OK Photoshop will generate a new image that is 11.25x300=3375px wide and 7.798x300=2339px high
The file size reduces to 22.6 MB.
The file is not changed when you use Image Size. The Tiff file remains as it was before it was opened. Photoshop is a document editor not a file editor.
I click ok and then go to save as and choose jpeg.
When you use "Save as" and use the pull-down menu and select Jpeg you will be saving a new file and not be over writing the tiff file.
In the jpeg box I chose 12 Max
That is a quality setting the higher the number (Max 12) the better the file quality will be the file will be less compressed then when lower quality setting are used. You would be hard pressed to see any image quality difference between quality 10 file and quality 12 file. The quality 10 file size will be quite a bit smaller then a quality 12 jpeg file.

The new jpeg file size is a product of the jpeg quality setting and how well the image data compresses. Size can vary all over the place. Images with lots of fine details will be larger then images with little detail. An image of a white wall will compress much smaller the an image with the same number of pixels that has a lot of details like an image of a cross word puzzle.

If when they open the file the receive they see an image that has a 72dpi resolution. It means either what you used to send the file resized the the image and sent a different file or what was used to receive the file resized the image and saved a different file. Or the image was resized by the image processor the user used to open the file either during open or after it was opened. For example if the user received the file you saved and sent 3375px wide and 2339px high and 300DPI and opened it in Photoshop and Photoshop is set to open Jpeg images through ARC the users ACR default workflow setting could be set to open image at 72DPI. An image dpi is a setting the image may still be 3375px wide and 2339px high however set to 72 DPI the print size would be 3375px/72=46.875" wide and 2339px/72=32.486" high using Image size changing itr 72dpi print resolution to 300dpi with RESAMPLE NOT CHECK would return it size to 11.25" x 7.798" at 300DPI.

Processing images as 300 dpi jpegs, comes out at 72 dpi.

I've seen two other posts with the same problem with no answer, so I thought I try as well. I am using Ap 2.1. I've processed the images in both the preset jpeg original size with the edit to 300 dpi. I've also made a custom preset with 300 dpi jpegs. Both times the images open in PS at 72 dpi. I processed them as tiffs at 300 dpi and they open in PS at 300 dpi just fine.
I've tripled checked the file-export-versions-JPEG original size-edit-300dpi.

I am repeating a post I made in another topic about this issue -- I would appreciate your thoughts:
I conducted a test that may or may not tell us something, but: I had a project with an imported photo scanned at 600 dpi and saved as a .psd at the time of the scan, before importing into Aperture. If I export that photo as a .psd, then PS will open it with a dpi of 72, but GC will open it with a dpi of 600. However, if I export that photo as a .tif, then both PS and GC open and report it to be 72 dpi?
I am not sure, but I think this is an indictment of Aperture?
Please tell me about the possible impact at any printers you use, since if the print size is specified, and not pixels have been lost, the image will print as you intend? I have some reports this has been seen with iPhoto, but ultimately not an issue, but I have not research with any printers.

How do I create a 300 dpi PDF from a Word 2003 file?

I need to convert a Word (2003) file to a High-res PDF file for the printers. They have requested 300 dpi.
I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (trial version).
The file contains a number of pictures in jpg format. Most of these are pretty high resolution. The document printed in Word on a laser printer looks fine.
I did try saving the file a a PDF file, and that did work, however it was low resolution. There must be some settings I have to change. How do I set things so it will creat a high resolution PDF file?

There is no such thing as resolution of a PDF file. Text and vectors in PDF are preserved and get scaled depending on the device on which PDF is shown.
Images in PDF do have a resolution that you can set when creating PDF. When printing your file from Word:
After File>Print, select printer properties.
In "ADobe PDF Settings" tab, you will see "Default Settings" - click the Edit button next to it.
In the Images pane, select your desired resolution.

Export 300 dpi file from multiple apps, but it is received at 72 dpi

I need HELP please.
I am creating a print job that needs to be output at 300 dpi. I have created the file in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Each time I set the file up as a 300 dpi file. I create the art, then I output. I have output both as an app original file (.psd, .ai, etc.) and as a .jpg and as a High Quality (Print) .pdf. But, when each of them is opened by another computer, the dpi is identified as 72 dpi. When they send the file back to me and I open it on my computer, it is identified as a 300 dpi.
Initially I had this problem with PS and I thought it was a PS problem. I worked with the folks at Adobe and they can't find a solution. Then, in desparation I had to get the file done, so I re-created everything in AI and had the same problem. Then in ID and had the same problem. (BTW - I'm using CS5.5). So, now I think that it's a Mac problem, not an Adobe problem.
Any ideas?

PS - I use a 17" Mac Book Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7; OS X 10.6.8 with an Apple Cinema Display 30" set to display at 1600 X 1200 (so I can read it as I'm not 19 any more)

Let me see if I am understanding this correctly, you create a PSD file at 300dpi, then you save this and reopen on your computer and it is still 300dpi, then you send this file as a psd to your client, and they open it and tell you that it is only 72dpi, then they send the same file back to you and it is at 300dpi on your computer again.
Are you sending the file via email, cd or flash drive?
Is the file sent in its raw psd state or is it being compressed with .zip, or .sit or anything like that?
Could you send me the file so I can confirm if the file is indeed 72dpi.
Otherwise this sounds like almost impossible behaviour to me.

How to generate 300 DPI image from canvas using Imagesnapshot

I want to generate image from my canvas.
I tried using bitmapdata and imagesnapshot.
Bitmapdata has no property called DPI.
Imagesnapshot allows to set DPI but it is not generating 300 dpi image.
Any idea?

You are in the Using iPhone forum. I will ask the hosts to move this to the iPad forum. However, I'm not aware of any setting change you can make to the cameras in the iPad or iPhone.

Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

3oo dpi jpeg help

Help! I'm trying to export a 300 dpi jpeg from Illustrator CS6 for a vendor. However every time I check the Inspector settings it says 72 dpi.
I'm exporting at 300 dpi and I've changed the Raster setting to 300 dpi as well. Why is it only outputting at 72??

I am using the trial version of Photoshop Elements 11.
However, I can't send Raw files directly to Elements from Lightroom 4. Only PSD, Tiff or Jpegs.
I have downloaded the latest camera Raw plug ins so both Elements and Lightroom have Camera Raw 7.3.

Hi,
Lightroom 4 doesn't contain a native ability to do what you are asking, but I wrote a plugin that might help you do what you want. It's called TPG Elemental. It helps with those many situations (e.g. creating panoramas or opening files in layers) where creating intermediate files on disk is pointless and just creates more work (or consumes more disk space) for you to manage.

Why are my JPEG exports from Lightroom 4 are not displaying on other computers?

When I export JPEGs from Lightroom, they display fine on my computer but when I send them to the client, they are not displaying at all. There is a message saying that the software on the clients computer may not be up to date so I tried updating their software but to no avail.

I know, it's strange. I've never encountered it before. They are definitely JPEGs, although I don't know if the difference between JPGs and JPEGs is anything to consider.
On my computer, 2008 MacBook Pro, OS 10.8.3, they display through Preview. Also, when I upload them to Dropbox, the thumbnails display correctly. I have transferred them to a USB key as my client was not tech savvy enough to grasp Dropbox. When I brought the USB Key to the client and transferred to her MacBook Air, neither the thumbnails nor the photos themselves displayed. I also tried transferring to her PC and the same result.
I was trying to contact Adobe support to see if this was a problem other people had experienced.

I have up dated lightroom and have just installed elements and whenever I try to edit by transfering a copy from lightroom to elements I get a waring pop up that says it cannot read in any format i choose. (psd.tiff etc) ??

When you click Cmd+E a dialog appears and you choose to export toPSE as PSD or tif with Lightroom settings. LR usually adds the word Edit to the original file name.
After you finish in editing in Elements and press Cmd+S to save you should get prompted to overwrite the existing file. You must say yes e.g. to overwrite the file that Lightroom exported to PSE. If you choose a different name or file format then Lightroom won’t know anything about it.
Finally when you Press Cmd+W the image should close in Elements and your PSE adjustments will show up on the Lightroom copy. Use that for print, slideshow or to export a jpeg from Lightroom.

How do I set to 300 DPI when exporting?

I have a real problem here. I use an Apple iMac with the base software, iPhoto.
When I export and burn to a CD, the photos are evidently being exported at a very low (72) DPI. I've had complaints from publishers and a stock agency that my images are not at 300 DPI. Yet I cannot figure out how to set DPI when exporting.
One stock agency owner told me to click on "preferences" and look there for where to set DPI. I did so, and found nothing whatsoever about DPI settings. He (the stock agency owner) doesn't use an Apple, so he was probably basing his "preferences" suggestion on where one would go if they were using a Windows-based program, or if one were using Photoshop.
If anyone can tell me how to set the DPI using the software I have I would appreciate it. I don't need to know how to do this in Photoshop or Aperture, as I don't have these programs, and I do not intend to get another editing program. How do you do it using only iPhoto - that's my dilemma.

DPI only comes into play when you set a size to be printed. Say you have an image that is 1600 x 1200 pixels in size. iPhoto when exported would report it at 72 dpi and a print size of 22.22 inches x 16.66 inches. If you you wanted a 300 dpi print from that photo you would have to print it at 5.33 inches x 4 inches.
It doesn't make any difference what the dpi is reported as long as the pixel dimensions are large. What size prints are offered by the stock agency? Take the largest that you photos would be offered at and multiple each dimension by 300 to get the number of pixels you would need to provide in the file. For example an 8 x 10 would require a minimum of 2400 x 3000 pixels. An 11 x 14 - 3300 x 4200 pixels.
To get a photo to report a specific dpi it must be set to be printed at a particular size. Photoshop can do that. The print size is included with the other info embedded in the file that would let other image applications see the dpi and the print size. For more info on this read The Myth of DPI. Watch this video screenshot of changing the dpi of a photo in Photoshop. Watch as the print size changes with dpi changing but the pixel dimensions remain the same.
iPhoto cannot set the print size for exporting.
Bottom line: if you were to provide an image at 3300 x 4200 pixels (an 11x14) it should be sufficient for any size up to that size. Photoshop Elements for Mac, at $79 (Amazon.com) has about 75% of Photoshop's capabilities at 1/7 the cost. It's really a very powerful, consumer oriented image editor. Ask them what the minimum pixel dimensions are for the photos.

Why jpeg file exported from Aperture with 300 dpi's it opens with 72 dpi's on PS ( image size)? I've tried several combinations and all give different results. And I am confused on what is the best workflow for me.

My workflow is
RAW > Aperture Library > export jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > one file on PS > edit > Save us jpeg. The I realised that files from PS were being save in a smaller size from the ones exported form Aperture. That is when I went o see <image size> on PS and files were with 72.
Since ten I've trying different things
1. Aperture > export as PSD > open on PS > edit > Save us jpeg = small file (around 15 MB)
2. Aperture > export as jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > open on PS > CHANGE dpi's to 300 on <image size> edit > Save us jpeg = big file (Huge, actually)
What am I doing wrong? Would someone give me guidance and tell me what is the best workflow, considering I edit photos to deliver to my clients and I shall give them 300 dpi's.

I've send from Lightroom 5 photos in Jpeg format to my desktop that arrive as Archive and I'm unable to do anything with the photos. I want to put them in a folder but can't. It seems problem is in them being in 'archive'. Any suggestions?

I've exported photos from Lightroom 5 from my laptop to my wife's desktop. The photos arrive as Archive and she's unable to do anything with them, such as catalog them in an IPhoto folder with other photos. Is there an adjustment I need to make when exporting from Lightroom 5 so we can avoid this problem? Thank you.

Afar as iPhoto is concerned it can import JPEGs and TIFFs - plus a few others - I have no idea what an archive format is and neither does iPhoto
