Sending Messages in Mail

I realize that other people have posted the same question about fifty freaking gajillion times, but it seems like it's pretty specific for most people. I tried fiddling with it for a bit, and then decided leaving it alone till I could get help would probably be a better idea.
Anyway, now that we're past that disclaimer, for the last few days I've been unable to send emails from Mail using my school and Comcast account. I'm in a dorm and before this week it was fine. I'm using a 15" PB with totally current software. I can use iChat and Safari and other internet programs, and I've gotten a few junk mails, but can't send anything.
It's really frustrating and if someone could help before I mess with it any more it would be awesome.

Here is some info on the problem. Sending plain text instead of rich text is the easiest thing to try.

    Hi, i am having the same problem. this is what i have noticed.
    I have 2 x imac's and 2 x macbook air's
    i upgraded the 2 macbook air's and 1 of the imac's to Mountain Lion, all these have problems acessing sites that require you to login .
    the one remaining imac is still running lion and works perfect.
    i am using a dlink router with DD-WRT firmware, i tested teathering from my iphone and i can log into websites fine using the newly upgraded mac's.
    It's not a wireless issue as my imac is using an ethernet connection.
    is there a compatibility issue with some routers.

    Using Mail and a Comcast account, I can receive but not send. The error message on trying to configure the outgoing mail server says the SMTP server isn't responding. If I click continue to set up the account in Mail, then go to Mail Preferences and tweak the ports between 587 and 25, triple check the username and password for the outgoing server, etc. -- still no dice.
    I wonder if this might be the problem: Is it possible to configure Mail when you're not using a Comcast installed modem? I'm trying to get my Dad's account up and running on my old Mac with my airport extreme to earthlink modem connection (which works fine for Earthlink and .Mac e-mail accounts.) Apple support and Comcast tech support are both stumped on this one, referring me back and forth to each other. HELP!

    If I'm understanding this, you are trying to send messages with a Comcast account and SMTP server while connected to the internet with Earthlink?
    If so, this is the cause of the problem. All ISPs now have restrictions on using an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by the ISP used for connecting to the internet.
    If you are connected to the internet with Earthlink at this house in California, contacting Comcast about a sending problem with their account and SMTP server when connected to the internet via Earthlink is a waste of time. You need to be contacting Earthlink if you are using Earthlink for your internet connection.
    Do you also have an email account with Earthlink? If so, you can select/use Earthlink's authenticated SMTP server to send messages with your Comcast email account while connected to the internet with Earthlink or call Earthlink technical support regarding their required settings for an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by Earthlink.

    I recently installed a wireless router (linksys). I can send mail at the local coffee shop, yet here at home I can't. I know it's something very simple, but I'm giving up...and asking for help in fear of tweaking the settings beyond my knowledge.     Help! I have read through this string, but not found an answer. I too, can receive emails but not send them. The problem started last week - I've been successfully using my mail account for 2 years and then last week, stuff I send just disappears - no error messages. I didn't change any settings or do any updates. All sent messages show in my "sent" folder, as well. I have tried everything, including restoring my hard drive from a backup copy made before I was having difficulty.
    I used suggestions in the online help, including using the "ping" function to see if I was communicating with my outgoing mail server. Trying to ping mail.mac.com I get the error message:
    "PING mail.mac.com (17.250.248.152): 56 data bytes
    --- mail.mac.com ping statistics ---
    10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
    I am using mail and .mac mail through a cable DSL line and Airport wireless connection.
    I tried changing my outgoing port to 110 and to 25 without help.
    Any thoughts?

    Try closing the Mail app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

    Greetings! I found this thread after trying in vain to set up my mom's email, which also stopped working with Bellsouth after the upgrade to 10.5 (now on 10.5.1). Email conversion was fine, and she, like others here, could receive mail but not send it.
    I have followed the directions here to the letter. Still no such luck. To clarify, mail.bellsouth.net, port 25, no authentication is the only entry in her outgoing mail server list (and it's selected). Moreover, when she checks Connection Doctor, it passes with flying colors - even connecting for outgoing email.
    Still pondering this one. I'm about "this close" to getting her a Gmail account (which I tested using my account - and it works fine, even IMAP). Of course if she can keep her existing account I think she'd prefer that, but I say go with whatever works ... !
    Other troubleshooting thoughts welcome!

    Just upgraded from Panther to Tiger.  I set up Mail, but when I tried to send an E=mail it didn't gop through, instead I got a message saying "Sender address rejected: Not logged in"  I checked, but all the settings are correct, similar to my other computer where Mail does work.  I didn't really use Mail with Panther, so I don't know if it's an old problem.
    Any ideas why this might be happening?

    Checked the Connection Doctor and there are only green dots, stating that the connection is fine.
    One says: "smtp.aol.com Connection to server succeeeded, no login required"
    But when I try to send mail the error message says: "Cannot send message using the server smtp.aol.com.  Server response is: Sender address rejected; not logged in"
    So, that sounds like two conflicting messages.  I'm using the same info on my other mac and it's working there (maul is sending).
    I'm just now deleting a lot of old messages, maybe that would help?  Although I don't really think so.
    Any ideas?

  • Cannot send messages in Mail

    Apple Mail is my primary email client. Yesterday, it started behaving strangely. It now will not send messages, either new ones or replies. Instead of being sent and then stored in my "Sent" mailbox, they go to the "Outbox". Trouble is, the Outbox does not appear in the list of mailboxes, and is grayed out in the View -> Go To menu. The only reason I know that the messages are going to the Outbox is when I click on the small arrow that appears next to a message that I replied to, the title bar shows that it's in the Outbox. I'm unable to access the message by searching for it and unable to send the message through Mail.
    Any help would be appreciated! I'll have to change email clients if I can't get this resolved soon, as I rely on Mail for my work at home.

    Did you check the Outgoing Mail Server and Incoming Mail Server, along with the Ports used, and whether or not Authentication is used? If not, that's the first thing to do. If all of those things are okay, then it's possible that your Mail preferences have become corrupt, and there's only one way to fix that.
    If that's the problem, here's how to fix it (or test to see if it's the problem):
    1. Quit Mail and go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file to your Desktop.
    2. Restart Mail and setup your account(s) again.
    3. Wait for Mail to find your existing messages and then see if the problem continues. If not, then you know the file was corrupted and you can now delete the old com.apple.mail.plist file from your Desktop.
    The Outbox isn't supposed to appear in the list of mailboxes, except when something is in the process of being sent, so that's not a problem. What is a problem is if messages go there but don't get sent. But you can access the message so that you can delete it if you choose by going to Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox.mbox.
    Post back with results.

  • Keyboard shortcut for sending messages on Mail suddenly stops working

    I've created a keyboard shortcut (Command + Return) specifically for sending manssages on Mail. When I open Mail, this keyboard shortcut works perfectly but suddenly it stops working.
    If I close and reopen Mail, the keyboard shortcut starts to work again, but for a while.
    I'm using OS X 10.9.1 and Mail 7.1 (1827).

    If Mail.app isn't there, add it.
    Under it add Send.
    Now choose your key combo i.e.

    Worked for me mail Version 7.1 (1827) running OS X 10.9.1.

    the message comes up is that "the connection to your outgoing mail server on port 25 timed out". I have followed the instructions of deleting the account and creating it again - that did not solve the problem. The outgoing server that's being used is "smtp.mac.com"
    Just wondering if anybody knows what the issue could be.

    Thank you for your email. It is possible that your regular email client is configured to delete the messages from the POP3 inbox after they have been retrieved. Try the following.
    1. Send an email message to your mail address.
    2. Close your email client before your email client retrieves the message.
    3. Using the iNet Factory classes attempt to login to the POP3 mailbox and retrieve your mail. Depending on how long it takes to send the mail through your SMTP server this may take a few tries before you get a message back.
    Alternatively you can disable the automatic deletion of email messages in your email client. If you are using MS Outlook you can do this from the main menu as follows:
    Tools | Accounts | Select Account | Properties | Advanced
    Check the box "Leave a copy of messages on server".
    This will leave the message on the server X days after you download the email from your Outlook client.

    Hello all. You may remember me from my recent Migration Assistant travails. Well, I eventually got a new hard drive and everything copied over fine... Or so I thought.
    I opened up Mail for the first time since the reinstall and happily went about my business, reading new messages and replying when necessary. However, this morning, two people told me that they never got my replies. I have done some testing, and here's what happens: I begin composing a new message, and after a bit it shows up in Drafts. When I hit "Send," it disappears from Drafts but never reappears in Sent Mail. The recipient never receives the message.
    This happens every time I try to send a message from any of my accounts, all of which are set up properly. What could be the issue? I'm running 10.7.2, Mail version 5.1.

    Updates:
    Turning off iCloud email syncing didn't work.
    Deleting /Users/me/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist didn't work. I thought I would have to re-enter my account information, but I didn't. The only things I see different are my window & view settings.
    Clarification:
    Sent messages don't appear in Outbox, either. They're completely gone.

    I have my Gmail account set up through the Mail application. I can receive messages fine but I can't send them. So I send them by actually logging into Gmail. Now when I send them that way, they show up in my Mail account but i don't want them to. Help please!

    Here is some background:
    I have two gmail accounts. My normal "[email protected]" account with which I am using POP does send mail. However I also have a google apps account ("username@my_domain.com") connected with IMAP and I can't send using this one. I have tried the various ports suggested by gmail help. It won't connect with the outgoing server. I ran a Telnet test and my computer is connecting with the server, but it appears as "offline" in Mail. User authentification and SSL are both checked (although I have also tried unchecking them).
