Sending SMS in Messages on iPad?

I was really hoping that the messages app in iPad would allow SMS via an SMS gateway (e,g., you could send text to [email protected]) but it doesn't seem to recognize that format as a legitimate recipient. There are third-party apps out there that allow this but it would have been nice if this had just been included in iOS 5.  Am I missing something or was this feature left out?

Messages on the iPad is for IOS device to IOS device only.

With the new OS X Yosemite operating system, yes you can. It can send and receive them. With Yosemite and IOS 8.1 (released today) you can send and receive them from your iPad as well.

  • How to send SMS ( Short Message Service ) from java code

    Hi
How to send SMS ( Short Message Service ) from java code.
    Thanks
    Gaurav

Do you need to receive SMS? If you need to receive SMS, you will need to host your own GSM device or modem so that people can send you SMS.
If not, you can just use internet SMS gateways like clickatell as mentioned above will do the work, and post to them by HTTP, XML or email. The cost is about 6-8 cents per SMS. There are cheaper services, but not always reliable. If you need to host your own GSM device, you can use software like http://www.kannel.org (GPL Open Source) or http://www.visualgsm.com. Alternatively, you may obtain a shortcode from your Telco - but these come with monthly subscription of maybe one or two hundreds.

  • Can not send SMS text message.

Hi, I'm a BlackBerry user for 4 years now and this is the first time that I have a problem with SMS text messaging. My precious BB is a Q10.
The problem is that I can receive SMS messages but I can not answer and I can not send messages. When I tap the 'send' icon or press Enter nothing happens. My message dissapears and i can not see in the upper window, below the message that I've previously receive and I wanted to aswer for.
Also, I can compose SMS message, but when I press Enter or tap send, nothing happens. No message in the hub, or in the text messages folder.
I've rebooted the device, reloaded the OS, but didn't help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
With a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (step 1 should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive
    2) Reboot
Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. IF this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Can Messages beta send sms text messages?

I have the Messages beta installed and it's working great between mine and my wifes IOS devices, and Macs.  But when I try to send an sms message to someone with a non-smart phone on the verizon network, I receive a message that they're not available.  Here are some of the fomats I've tried
    [email protected]
    +2154991234

Is it possible to send and receive sms text messages from my Mac?

I actually forgot to mention that bit, as I always turn on the instant messaging field by default in my template settings. For those that don't know how to do this, just open the address book preferences (Command + Comma) or from the Address Book menu, select Preferences, go to the Template tab, click the 'Add Field' drop down, and select "instant messaging'. I did define those SMS numbers as "AIM" for the 'type'.
Not really keen on the idea that I have to leave my AIM account logged in as I rarely use it these days, but I haven't found a way to work around that yet.

  • Is there any tool/apps to send sms from the new Ipad?

    Hi all,
i am in Africa and we have no plan for using internet from phones without sending a text message to the carrier.
Could you please let me know if it is possible to send a text not an imessage to a number from the Ipad?

  • 3G Setting - not able to send SMS text messages

I have a £GS iphone. Can anyone explain why my SMS messages fail to send if the 3G setting is enabled but it will send when 3G is disabled. It makes no difference whether I have a strong 3G signal or none at all.

I suggest contacting your carrier. I don't believe this is an iPhone problem since you are able to send SMS when connected via EDGE or when 3G network access is off. Although technically data, SMS is exchanged over the same network as calls - not via the carrier's data or internet network.

  • Cannot send non-iMessage messages on iPad with ios5

Using an iPad2 with ios5 and trying to send messages without using iMessage. Here's the sequence of events:
    1. In Settings under Messages turn iMessage off
    2. In Messages app, the first screen that shows up tells me I need to login to Apple to activate iMessages. Once I login the messages setting is now set to iMessages again.
There is no discernible way to use Messages without using iMessages. Am I missing something or is this another "***, Apple?" moment?

I understand, if they do not have iMessage the send button should be green and it will send to them as an SMS. If there is an issue and it is blue for some reason then hold the button down it will turn green and send it as a text message.
Sorry, forgot where I was. The iPad only uses iMessage in the texting app, it is the iPhone where my suggestion will work. If you want to text message someone you will need to look for an app to do so.

  • All of a sudden I can't send or receive messages on iPad. Iphone is working fine. It gives me "message failed to send" and is green instead of blue. The only thing I have done differently is turn iCloud on in my iPhone.

cant receive or send messages on my iPad. Keep getting "message failed to send" and it is green instead of blue. This happened after I turned on iCloud on my iPhone. Would that have anything to do with this problem? It's like its not sincing to my phone but I can send & receive emails ok.

iOS 7.1.2, huh? It MAY be having some trouble with the iOS 8.x devices and latest iCloud features. Although it meets the minimum system requirements, it does not meet the recommended ones - System requirements for iCloud - Apple Support
You should try Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support - this is generally the first step in troubleshooting, all devices - for all time
    Message Colors
    Blue is iMessage (Apple service)
    Green is SMS (Carrier service)
What happens when you use your iPad similarly? (what iPad model & iOS version)
As a last resort*, Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support - *this document tells that all your data will be lost but provides steps to back-up (Before section) then restore your data (Restore section #4)

  • HT5622 Why can I send a message with an attached photo to one contact on phone or email and can't to another contact. I can sent message on iPhone still I was using messages on iPad

Why can I send message on iPad messages to one contact and not send same message with same photo to another contact. I can sent message on iPhone to same contact

I would guess that the problem contact does not have iMessage turned on. The iPad can only send iMessages not SMS messages (phone text). You can send a message to this contact with your iPhone because your iPhone can send SMS text messages.

  • HT201349 I have my iPad and iPhone set up as described but I cannot send or receive SMS texts on my iPad only imessages.

I have my iPad and iPhone set up for messaging and facetime, but I cannot receive or send SMS texts with the iPad even when the iPhone is on. I can receive imessages. Is there something I am missing?

    Hello tonys4004,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you'd like to set up your iOS devices for SMS using Continuity, please see the information outlined below.
    SMS
With Continuity, all the SMS and MMS text messages you send and receive on your iPhone also appear on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch. Even if the person you’re communicating with doesn’t have an iPhone. And regardless of what phone they have, you can reply from whichever device is closest to you, including your iPad or Mac. You can also initiate a  conversation by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, or Calendar.
To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch
Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch need to use iOS 8.1, and your Mac needs to use OS X Yosemite.
Sign in to iMessage on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac using the same Apple ID.
    On your iPhone:
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By, and add a check to both your phone number and email address.
Go to Messages > Text Message Forwarding, and enable the device(s) you would like to forward messages to.
Your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch will display a code. Enter this code on your iPhone to verify the SMS feature.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support
    Take care,
    Alex H.
