Sensor and Pixel Basics

The recent introduction of the 5Ds with its 50.6 megapixels leads me to ask about sensor size and pixels.  There is an on-line tome by W. H. Majoros that describes the situation well, I think.  You can reference it at "digitalbirdphotography.com".
Frequently when discussing full-frame vs APS-C cameras, the fact that the image appears larger on the APS-C photo is spoken of as its having an increased magnification.  But this is misleading.  The "real" size of a photo, when displayed on a computer monitor, is seen when looking at it at 100% magnification, in which case there is a one-to-one mapping of sensor pixels to monitor pixels.  The displayed photo size of a photo is due to the linear pixel density of the camera sensor, not the overall size of the sensor.
Regarding the ultimate sharpness of a photo, while it is limited by the pixel density (higher is better), it is also limited by the pixel size because of electronic noise (lower pixel density and thus larger pixel size is better).  So at some point higher linear pixel density becomes a negative feature.
Which brings me to a comparison of the new cameras, the full-frame 5Ds and the APS-C 7D Mark II.  I compute that the linear pixel densities of tese are both about 240 pixels/mm.  Until now the full-frame 5D cameras have had lower pixel densities, which seemed like an advantage due to their larger pixels, especially at higher ISO.
So except for the larger FOV provided by the 5Ds, why would anyone want this over the 7D Mark II?  I'd appreciate others' thoughts on this.
Thanks,
Edward1064

Canon's ISO ranges include, at the top end, a regime described as "ISO speed expansion" or something similar. One way to describe the transition point into that regime is "the point beyond which you may not want to go if you can't tolerate a lot of noise". If you look closely at the specs, you'll see that that point is two stops lower for the 5Ds than for the 5D Mk III.
So yes, larger pixels are better, and the greater FOV may be the only advantage of the 5Ds over the 7D2. But if you need it, that's how to get it.
And one is left to hope that the 5D3, with its evidently better low-light performance (and noticeably lower price), will remain in the product line for the foreseeable future.

  • IPhone Liquid Submersion Sensor and Dead Pixels

Today I went down to my carrier HQ. (Singtel, Singapore).
I went to spoke to the person at the iPhone servicing counter.
He told me that my iPhone Liquid Submersion Sensor has been triggered and it's now out of warranty.
And my purpose is there, to have my iPhone exchange as my home button is getting unresponsive at times.
And he told me that this is under Apple policy. When I purchase the phone, the salesperson didn't even told me about the policy and I wasn't aware of that.
So the main point is my iPhone Liquid Submersion Sensor and I didn't even drop it into any liquid, I don't know why but it's just unfair for me as an end user.
Question here, will playing apps like Ocarina activate the iPhone LSS? Only my bottom LSS is triggered, the top one isn't.
Also to recall, at the point when I'm buying my iPhone 3G last year, out of the box there is already a dead pixel and the person refuse to change a new set for me.
I'm in need of an iPhone urgently, anybody can tell me what to do?

Ocarina could trigger the water sensor since you could spit into the dock connector while blowing into the mic.

  • Sensor and viewfinder cleaning

I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem with Canon.
I just bought a brand new 5dmii (may 9th, 2013) and my first shot had spots (extended exposure shot at f22). I continued to use the new camera and within a few days black specks appeared in the view finder. I called Canon and was instructed to send the camera in for a warranted repair. The paperwork that came back with the camera said that foreign material was found in the sensor assembly and that the sensor assembly was cleaned. I checked some new shots and the spots were still there (the ones in the view finder were gone but the same ones on the photos remained). I again called Canon and was told to send it back to their Newport News facility once again.
After sending it in the second time I got it back and now there are 10 times as many spots as before (79 plus) and a black speck in the view finder has returned. I called Canon back and was basically told that dust is not a problem and that they will try again but I just may have to live with it. I explained that to me this was a flaw with the new camera since the very first shot had spots (FYI when I put the lens on for the first time I pointed the camera body down, attached it quickly and did not take it off). I also explained that if I had caused the issue I would not be complaining, however, the camera came to me like this and was brand new. I asked if they could exchange this one for a new one (remember I have had the camera less than 30 days) and they told me no. I was told that I would need to send it to a New Jersey Factory repair facility since the Newport News facility could not get it clean.  I asked what would happen if it still came back with spots and viewfinder specks and was told that I would have to send it in again.
At this point I am so frustrated that I do not know what to do. I have been such a Canon advocate and have two 7Ds, two 70-300 L lenses, a 6D, two 24-105 L lenses and have never had these types of issues. I have boxed up my new 5dmii and will be sending it out to New Jersey, however, I was wondering if anyone has had a terrible experience like this before.

    Hi jklick,
Thanks for your interest. I ended up getting nowhere with Canon. The customer service rep. that assisted me was less than helpful and I ended up retuning the camera from the store where it was purchased (I explained the whole thing to the rep at the store and they were kind enough to accept the return....I still buy most of my cameras and supplies from them). Some time went by and I later purchased a 6d (dust free upon arrival). After using the camera for a while, I found that I had gotton some dust on the sensor, as opposed to the 5dmii which came with a dirty sensor right out of the box. I then ordered some cleaning products to clean the sensor myself. I then used said cleaning products and had a clean sensor once again. After getting over my initial reluctance to clean the sensor myself, I am now rather comfortable with the job and I will continue to do it in the future (although I still feel that when one gets a brand new camera, it is acceptble to have a few sensor spots; however, if there are many then Canon should be capable of cleaning it under warranty without making the issue even worse).

What is the best family plan option. Currently have one smart phone with 30gb of data and 3 basic phones. Also have home phone for $20/month. Current plan is 700 shared minutes and unlimited texting. My bill is close to $200/month, looking to lower if possible.

On a tablet- pse forgive typos....
Great Advice given earlier by SuzyQ   - I believe the question not asked of you is ---what do you want to pay for the services that you need.  I think that it would narrow the groups suggestions if you could narrow your needs.
For example: I need talk and text on 4 phones and some data say, 2 Gig, on only one of the phones. what plan is the best cost for me? You may also need to ask what the cost may be to switch to a different plan. I suspect that there will be no cost within Verizon-but ask anyway.
I do not think that you can have a smart phone on any Verizon plan unless you agree to buy data for that phone. Also, you said that wifi is often available-however, I do not believe that Verizon allows talking over wifi without consuming airtime minutes-only data over wifi avoids your allowance to be impacted.
As most here already know, several other service providers offer wifi-friendly service (talk/text/data) that will provide  home/business/restaurant service without impacting your allowance- just not here.
After getting some suggestions here, call 611 and confirm availibility and price.
Best of luck in your research.

  • Is new software around for Ipod Nano 5G with the Nike sensor and Polar wearlink HeartRateMonitor to get spoken feedback on heartrate-zone, so you get a warning if your heartrate is higher or lower than the predefined range.

    I have:
Ipod Nano 5G with Nike+ sensor and Polar wearlink Heartrate monitor:
works fine, linking is easy, but....
Software is rather minimal: Heartrate is on the screen and you get feedback when the center-button is touched.
To get better results, more functions would be useful, like defining a heartrate zone (like Polar`s own-zone) and automatic spoken feedback if the heartrate is out of the pre-defined range. Also automatic spoken feedback on actual and average heartrate every pre-defined time-interval would be very useful: like the spoken feedback on distance and actual pace I get on my Iphone with Nike+GPS
    Anyone have any suggestions ?

I have the same issue! I purchased a nano 6th, polar hrm so I could run and receive spoken feedback when my heart rate was outside my preset zone.  My suunto t3 used to beep when outside the preset zones.  Automatic, periodic beeps or spoken feedback is the most important information to receive during exercise. I hope apple can update the software to add this simple yet critical feature.

  • HELP!!??? Trouble with PS CS-6 displaying/ producing grainy and pixelated images after being imported using PS Bridge and Camera-Raw 8.5

Help!??? I am having trouble with PS CS-6 displaying/ producing/ saving grainy pictures when import NEF files!!!
    Hi all,
When I import all NEF or RAW files into CS6 from Bridge and Camera Raw from the Nikon D200 and D5000, they become grainy/ pixelated.  However, RAW files from the D800 did not have problem. I set the Color Space in my Nikons to AdobeRGB, in PS Camera Raw 8.5 to AdobeRGB, in PS CS-6 ColorSpace to AdobeRGB, and Save As Jpeg with Max quality (12). When comparing between CS-6 produced file and the original, I can see a big drop in quality and the picture become grainy and pixelated. What can I do to make this right? Any help/ suggestion is appreciated.
    Thank you!
    HN

Can you show us a screen-shot of the raw in Camera Raw that shows this noise, or if you only see it in the saved JPG, then show us a side-by-side of the raw in Camera Raw and the JPG?  Show the same area of the photo and zoom to 100%.
It is normal for raw photos to have grain but you can mostly remove it with the Luminance Noise-Reduction sliders in the Detail tab of Camera Raw.
The amount of grain depends on the ISO sensitivity setting on the camera.

  • Can cFP-AI-111 power a sensor and remain IS

We aree evaluating using Compact FieldPoint in a hazardous environment and have a couple of questions:
1.Is it possoble for the cFP-AI-111 to power a sensor and remain intrinsically safe? If so, what is required?
2.Is there a cFP module that will work with a potentiometer and/or Wheston Bridge type sensor?
    Regards,
    Barrett

    Dear Barrett,
You can power your cFP-AI-111 using Figure 5 from the Operating Instructions. Use a wire to connect V and Vsup, C and COM, and wire your sensor like Figure 5. What do you mean by intrinsically safe? Would this setup work?
As for the different cFP modules, take a look at the cFP-RTD-124 and the cFP-SG-140. All of the analog input modules can be found here.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    Marni S.

  • My ipad screen is shimmering green and pixelated.  What's happening

My ipad screen is shimmering and pixelated.  I've tried restarting and restoring from backup.  Everything still seems to work, but the screen looks shimmery and pixelated.  How do I fix this?

I have an old iPad 3 that has taken a beating, and the screen occasionally shifts colors (blue, green, or red).  It would look about like this:
    http://ipadhelp.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/ipad-screen-colour-problem-620x40 0.jpg
This is going to sound dumb, but this always fixes it for me:
Lay the ipad flat on your lap, open your hand, and with fingers spread, gently but firmly smack the screen of the iPad.  I sometimes have to do it 3-5 times (mostly because I'm afraid to hit it too hard!), but it consistently resolves the problem for me.

  • Setting up DAQ system for testing (using pressure transducer, linear position sensor and strain gauges)

    Hello,
I like to get your suggestion in setting up the DAQ system. I am very beginner in this issue.
These SCXI listed below are what we have in the laboratory. I will use DAQ card 6062E.
    SCXI 1000
    SCXI 1520
    SCXI 1140
    SCXI 1142
    SCXI 1305 , 1302 , 1300
    SCXI 1122
    SCXI 1100
I will use linear position sensor in my experiment. But I'm not sure which SCXI shoud I connect to this sensor.
This sensor gives 4-20mA output. it requires +13 to +28Vdc excitation.
I will use pressure transducer (strain gauge type) which gives 100mV output and requires 10Vdc supply.
I will use strain gauges 350 ohm.
Regarding to the number of channels used in my experiment, I will use 1 channel of pressure transducer, 1 channel of linear position sensor and 3 or 4 strain gauges.
Could you please suggest me which SCXI should be used with pressure transducer, linear position sensor and strain gauges.
Now I'm thinking to use SCXI 1520 with strain gauges and pressure transducer. Is that ok?
But I'm not so sure on the linear position sensor which gives current output.
And regarding to sampling rate, I like to get minimum of 60-70 KS/s for pressure transducer. And around 1KS/s for linear position sensor and 1KS/s for each channel of strain gauge are enough. Can I archieve these sampling rate from the available SCXI modules mentioned before? I attached the datasheet of pressure transducer and linear position sensor for you. Please see attached files.
I'm reallly look forward for your suggestion.
    Thank you in advance,
    Ganchai.

    Hi Ganchai,
I would recommend the 1520 with a 1314 terminal block for connecting your pressure transducer and strain gauge. It is designed for excitation, bridge completion and has many other features to fit these applications. For your linear position sensor, try using the 1100 module with an additional precision shunt resistor. For example, our 1308 terminal block has built in 249Ohm shunt resistors for taking current inputs for your 1100. These connections should give you the readings you would like.
As far as sampling rate goes, you should be fine with your requirements. Good luck and I hope you are succesful.

  • I have an optical sensor and two hall effect how can I data log?

I have built a test rig which consists of a gyroscope.  The gyro is spun up by and electric motor.
I need to measure the speed of rotation.  I’m using an optical sensor and two Hall
Effect sensors.  I would like to record the
output of these and I would like to build in some redundancy because there will
be another bigger rig that will require more measurement.  E.g. vibration.
I’m new to data logging so I’m not sure which hardware I
    should be getting.
    Thanks

analog inputs are the most universal.  with software such as the functions included in the Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite, you can analyze the analog input channel which is connected to your hall effect and optical sensors for frequency and speed.  Vibration specific input cards will power accelerometers.  with the speed and angular position sensors (hall effect and optical) you can combine this information with your vibration sensors to determine the movement of the device with respect to position and speed.  These order analysis functions are part of the Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite.
What is more is that the Suite includes an assistant.  The assistant allows for the capture and datalogging of all analog and digital inputs as well as frequency and vibration analysis.  This is all configurable and does not require any LabVIEW programming.  If you decide you want LabVIEW programming, all the functions are there to support LabVIEW as well.

Hi, i'm Architec and my basic programs are: Autodesk Architecture and 3D studio Max. Can i run it in the MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch  (NEWEST VERSION) Thanks!!!

You can but make sure you upgrade your RAM to 16GB - you can't do that through Apple...
Autodesk is a memory intensive program and the same goes with 3D Studio Max.....
Another suggeston if you must use a 13 inch is to buy the base 13 inch Macbook Pro and upgrade the RAM to 16GB and install a SSD to make it perform fast.
Another option is to get a refurbished 15 Inch Macbook Pro and do the RAM upgrade yourself...Advantage going 15 Inch is because it has it's own discrete graphics adapter rather than the built in Intel video.
