Sent Classic to the Trash-Damaged OSX System Preferences Pane
I decided to delete Classic as I no longer use it. Using Spotlight I identified various Classic files and folders and deleted them.
One of them must have belonged to the OSX System Preferences pane, as the Classic Preferences icon has now disappeared.
Can I get this back? If I need to reinstall Classic later I assume I shall need it

That's normal, isn't it? The Classic icon only appeared in my Sys Pref panel after I accidentally clicked on a OS9 application. (Started out with 10.4.4 on my mini).
I am reasonably sure should you attempt to start a Classic app, the icon in your Sys Pref panel will re-appear as well.

I inadvertently created a very large file on my hard drive. Not needing it I sent it to the Trash Can. However, the deletion process never completes. Any suggestions as to how to delete it ? I re-installed the OS but the file was still there taking up needed space.
Command-click all of the files you want to delete and don't actually move them to the Trash until you've gone through the entire folder.

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps. -
HT203796 I don't have the iCloud icon in "SYSTEM PREFERENCES" , any ideas?
I could synchronize my iPad with my Mac Book Pro before replacing the hard drive and recoveing data from my Carbonite backup.
Now I don't see the iCloud icon in SYSTEM PREFERENCES.

i did follow "From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Choose View > Time Machine. Set Time Machine to On if it is off "

Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?
Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. -

Upgraded to Yosemite. Upgraded Pages to latest version. Uninstalled older versions of pages (made with iWork '09). Now I cannot open any Pages documents made prior to upgrading. I keep getting the same redundant message: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. You can download the latest version of Pages from the Mac App Store." Not sure if this is relevant, but Pages does not show up in the iCloud list in systems preferences.
Ok, I found pages on the iCloud drive. But the behavior of Pages is still the same, problem unchanged.

I am trying to use a Logitech USB headset to record with screencast o matic. In the sound file of system preferences the headset is recording audio. However it stops working when I use screen cast o matic. Any advice?

System Preferences panes unresponsive!
Hello,
I've been on all day trying to figure out what is wrong with my mum's Mac Mini (running 10.7.5). System preference panes are unresponsive, showing only "Loading Displays..."/"Loading sound..." etc, at the top of the window, and nothing happens.
I've been online and looked at everything that everyone else has tried: deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist thing; restarting in safe mode to remove login items (the system preferences panes don't work in safe mode either...); and downloading the latest (10.7.5) Combo Update to reinstall over what might be a bugged original update, but it won't allow me to install it, saying "the disk does not meet the requirements".
So... I'm quite confused, and at the moment it's looking like the only option is to reinstall Lion. Someone please tell me this isn't the case!

Missing user accounts in system preference pane 10.6.1?
(I hope this isn't posted under another topic already..)
After reading a post on another site about missing user data in Snow Leopard (http://bit.ly/3wf3v7), I decided to do a little digging on my own machine to see if I'm experiencing any of the same issues..
First of all I'm not readily experiencing any particular bugs since upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1, but I did notice the following:
-my usual admin user account (me) did not show any other user accounts on the machine in the system preference pane.
-I have fast user switching on, and when I select it the account name at the upper right corner of the screen, it shows all of the accounts that the sys pref pane does not.
-a quick look at my finder reveals on the root level that all of my user accounts are intact as well.
-I switched to another admin account on the machine, and it loaded up fine– upon opening the sys pref on the other admin account, I was able to see all of the other active accounts on the machine in the accounts pane.
-note: the guest account is deactivated, and I've not logged into a guest account since upgrading to 10.6.1.
So my question is: why doesn't my primary user account (obviously an admin account) see the other active accounts in my sys pref accounts pane, but my other admin accounts do? Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll need to make account changes from my user account in regards to the other user accounts and I'll need that functionality at that point.
-note: I've lost no data to my knowledge and I have a TM backup drive active.
Any thoughts from my fellow Mac Geniuses?Creating an account named abc did not bring back my previous accounts. I had installed Snow Leopard on my iMac several months ago. My hard drive was damaged by SnowLeopard family pack install disk that I was using to update my daughter's Macbook on Friday. When I opened my Mac in target disk mode, there was no system folder on the hard drive. I started to install 10.5.8 so I could use my iMac-didn't get it finished before going to work. Bought a new Snow Leopard install disk on the way home, cancelled the uncompleted install of 10.5.8, and the iMac booted up like a new machine.
All my files are there, but the only user available is the one created while booting up. Migration assistant doesn't see the user accounts on the iMac hard drive. -
System Preferences pane - security icon no longer works on all tabs
System Preferences pane has several tabs where there there is a security option, i.e.: a padlock icon with 'click lock to prevent further changes".
the icon is not working on all the tabs - it works on some tabs, but on others it just flashes and stays unlocked.so today it works... WT*!

System Preference Panes non-functional (some)
I am "fixing" a friends MacBook Pro as a favour, and she's getting exactly what she paid for. It may be a few years old - not sure. It's running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, but I'm putting it in this more general section because it may not be SL-specific.
A few of the System Preferences panes don't work. A message comes up which simply says "non-functional" or something like that. Specifically, the ones whcih don't work are:
Desktop and ScreenSaver
Spotlight
Energy Saver
Background: she forgot her password, and this is on a computer which was formerly someone else's. I couldn't even get the thing to the login screen, so something else was wrong besides her password, but I had her gray Snow Leopard installation disks, so got through the re-install process, made a new User for myself, as Administrator, and was then delighted to find that all of her data was still intact. I had to add myself in to the permissions on her UserID. I made a new user for her as well, because we still didn't have her own original password, and I looked around but couldn't find it. I copied all of her data over to her new UserID.
I also did all Updates, plus tried a 10.6.8. combo update.
Then I made an error. The former owners UserID was also still there. We couldn't log on as her either, without her password, but I figured that we didn't need that anymore, checked with the current owner first, and deleted the original User (and renamed the computer). I cannot reconstruct in my mind whether the System Preferences panes malfunction occurred before or after deleting the original User.
There is other minor wonkiness, but basically the machine is running and the data has been preserved (and now backed up). But one thing at a time: I've reinstalled the OS a couple of times, without improvement. I tried to upgrade to Mavericks, but after downloading, it told me that this computer could not be upgraded (without saying why not).
I haven't found any plist files which look relevant. I did more 2 of them out of HD-Library-Preferences, without any effect, so put them back. I find the Preference Panes in System-Library-PreferencePanes, but didn't see anything to do about that. The offending panes look like they're at least present.
Is there something simple I'm missing? Can I get those panes back?

CharlesMacbook pros need to be at least 2009 for 13" and 2007 for 15" and 17" to run Mavericks. see system requiements.
At this point, the easiest solution will be to make your backups current, then wipe the drive and do a clean install of the system. That means more work reinstalling the backed-up data (you only want to restore data and third-party apps, not any of the system components), but it makes sure you get a clean, working copy of the system. -
Some system preferences panes won't open
I just installed Mountain Lionon my iMac. When I try to open the System Preferences panes for Notifications; Security & Privacy; iCloud; Mail, Contacts & Calendars; and Desktop & Screen Saver though, I get the message
To use the “[Name of pane]” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.
Selecting OK causes the System Preferences to disappear and then come back, but that same error message is still there. How do I get rid of it so I can acess those panes? Thanks!Yep:

Under General, deslect Open in 32-bit mode
Then try to acess what you were trying to earlier.
