Sent mail just sits in Outbox. Why?

All of a sudden yesterday, any mail I try to send from my mail app, the emails just sit in the outbox and it says, error-your server timed out on port xxx. Your mail will stay in the outbox till it can be sent.
Sometimes it doesn't say anything.
And I can't log in to my email only extra account on my dotmac....says my password was wrong, so I went and did the change password to the same password, and I still can't log on.
This has happened before when messages stayed in outbox I was trying to send, then it stopped. Now, I can't send any email through my mail application.
I can get mail.
What's the problem?
I installed Intego NetBarrier X5 last week, but it just started not sending mail yesterday.
And when it happened before, I didn't have NetBarrier.
This is so frustrating.
Can anyone help?

That worked. The funny thing is, it SAYS it sits in my outbox and I keep trying to send it, and the people actually GET it, sometimes three copies because I would keep trying. That's the weird thing also.....
But you gave me the right port number and it worked.
I wonder why the port number changed?
I got Net Barrier from Intego and it shows what port you are using and it will use 4 different ports everytime I do mail. I don't know why it does that.
But thanks. That did the trick.
Don't know why that happens.
This is the second time and I didn't even have Net Barrier before.
It's just weird.
But thanks anyway.

  • Mail just sitting in outbox

when i send mail it sits in the outbox. is there a setting that accounts for this delay. i want it to go off right away. i try reopening it and sending it, but it just sits there. in outlook there were separate send AND receive emails icons. i only see a get mail button. surely there must be a way. i feel like am just waiting for the computer to send it when it feels ready. what gives? HELP PLEASE!!!

Do you get asked for your password or anything like that.
do you have more than one account?
does it happen whichever account your use?
I can't think of any other reason why it sits there.
Having just been through all my mail preferences there isn't an option to choose when mail gets sent so it SHOULD go straight away, unless your outgoing server is incorrectly set up.
so it might be worth you checking your outgoing server settings for any account involved.

I have been experiencing the same problem. My mail app won't even open on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. It will show as open, but the app will never actually show up.

  • Email sent from outside Mail app sits in outbox?

Whenever I try to send an email from outside the Mail app it just sits in my Outbox until I go in and re-send what I thought I'd already sent. Very annoying, any way to fix this? I sync email with Google Sync and Yahoo.

They are in your Library folder, but it is now hidden in Lion. You can unhide it by either:
hold Option key and to to Go Menu in Finder - Library will be there. Once open you can drag its' icon into the Sidebar if you want.
Or, you can use this terminal command:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Once in the Library, there is the Mail folder. Please note that they are now in a folder named "V2" and the format is not compatible with Snow Leopard. You can try putting your folders there, but I do not know if that will work, especially since they are from 10.5.

  • Outbox mail just sitting there, how do I get it to go?

Lately when I send an email and sometimes it goes and sometimes it just sits there in the outbox for hours.
How do I get it to go when I hit send? I am online and every appears to fine, is there a setting I am overlooking?

    Steve,
The problem has been more persistent lately. When it began, I am uncertain, I would say the past few weeks or so. Everything has been working fine until lately. Changes? Tough one to answer, there are always changes/settings made as I am learning everyday. But none to speak of that would affect the way email is sent.
I have checked my settings and have not found anything that should affect email being sent.

  • Mail won't send.  Just sits in outbox

Mail does not send.  Messages sit in outbox.  Account settings have not been altered.  I don't get any error messages when I hit send button.

What email provider are you using? It appears your outgoing mail server is incorrect. One possible solution is to delete the account and add it again.

  • Why is my sent mail getting stuck in outbox and not sending?

I have tried rebooting, Closing the mail application, And deleting my iCloud account from my phone. Messages do not get sent   , mail says "sending" for awhile and then they appear in my outbox with the error exclamation icon. Tapping icon gives a menu saying connection to outgoing sever failed.

Are you still using iOS 7.0.3 as stated in your profile?  if so, update to 7.1.  If already on 7.1:
    1.  Reset phone (no data loss): Press both the home and power buttons, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
    2.  Delete and re-enter  your iCloud account.

  • Sent mail just disappearing

I have an intermittent problem that seemed to have started since the upgrade. When I send emails from my iPad, the sent mail never gets sent, doesn't go to outbox, just disappears off the device. This occurs in my .mac account and both my Exchange accounts. I've tried switching the accounts off, and quitting mail from running in the background, but it seems to keep happening.
It's not consistent - not every mail - but often.
    TIA

    Hi...
Since you have a .mac account and Exchange, try resetting sync services.
Follow the instructions at this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627?viewlocale=en_US
Where you see: *Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard*
Also. Your profile: Mac OS X (10.6.2)
If you are still running v10.6.2, you need to update your system software. Click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click Software Update...
As with any updates, repair permissions after the updates are installed.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

  • All my Sent mail just disappeared...!

Been having a couple of problems with a Time Machine drive (WD 1TB MyBook) which have had me diving in and out of Disk Utility and DiskWarrior trying to fix it, but my actual iMac is running fine. However, I just noticed that sometime in the last hour or so, ALL my 'Sent' mail has vanished from the app. Mails sent since the vanish are appearing fine but all my earlier mails are gone. I have Mail set up to use IMAP Gmail but have not had any problems with it before.
This seems to have coincided with a hanged 'Quit' out of Mail earlier today. I'd quit the app and the window had gone but the app wasn't quitting. In the end I Forced Quit but strangely the Force Quit window didn't say the app was unresponsive like it usually does, so perhaps I shouldn't have done this. Either way, I'm pretty sure it was when I relaunched the app that all the Sent mail had gone, but I can't be sure as it was another half hour till I dipped into the folder to check the wording in something I'd sent that morning.
    Any ideas?

    Owen:
The problem may have been caused by DiskWarrior or the Permission Repair function in DiskUtility. Also there have been a number of stability issues with Mail after the 10.5.6 update.
Apple has just issued a fix for Mail under 10.5.6 - check downloads. If that does not resolve the problems you can import the sent mail using the Import function under Mail/File. You may also have to rebuild the individual mailboxes using Mail/Mailbox/Rebuild.
    Hope this helps.

  • Outgoing mail just sits in the Out box -

Add me to the list of people who are unable to send mail.
Problem started after 2 days ago and after upgrade to 10.4.6
I noticed that on the Dot Mac site it says that Mail delivery was unavailable to certain Dot Mac users for various amounts of time on various days. I wonder if this is the case now.
I've gotten 3 different error messages at different times while trying to Send.
    1. Cannot send message using the server smtp.mac.com
    2. smtp.mac.com doesnt support authentication
    3. The sender address XXXX.mac.com was rejected by the server
I am receiving mail, but sending is not happening.
From reading all the threads here, it doesn't seem like anyone has had a solution to this problem and it seems to be affecting some and not others.
I've changed the ports, I've trieddeleting the account and adding it again, but when I try to save it, I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit. This happens each and everytime I try to do it.
I can logon via the internet and send mail, from there, but not on my computer.
    Anything NEW anyone can suggest

Problem resolved, it had nothing to do with 10.4.6 upgrade, it was a Dot mac problem as I thought.

  • Can't send email, just hangs in outbox...

Since beginning of November, i have noticed my emails are not being sent. I have made no changes to my .mac account OR my imac system. I can still receive mail, but most of the sent mail, just hangs around in the outbox. Internet connection is fine, i have deleted the account and set it up again, only to have the same problem. I have an imac 10.4.11
Looking through other questions on the forum, it seems that this is a reoccurring issue, i have tried some of the tactics to cure it to no avail, can anyone suggest a simple remedy please.....?

I'm have the same problem. I just recently switched over from Time Warner cable as my internet provider to AT&T DSL. I have several macs and they are all set up now to use the AT&T DSL Modem. My laptop can send and receive email just fine, however, ever since I made the switch from Time Warner to AT&T my desktop can't. It can receive emails, but when ever I try to send them, I'm having the same problem where they just hang in the outbox.
Were any of you able to resolve the problem?

  • Loosing Sent Mail

    Hi,
I get this message once and a while when I look in my Sent mail folder:
The message from Peter Carry <[email protected]> concerning “Speedline Tech- Electrovert quote and rental” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
Mail does not say its "Working Offline" when this occurs. The usual fix is for me to exit Mail and re-strat, then I can see Sent mail just fine.
Can someone tell me what the problem is?
Also, related to this, which happened today and caused me great anguish, has to do with deleting sent mail. I typically retain about 3 months worth of sent mail. I just went to delete November's mail. I went into Sent and seleted all the November mail and deleteled. I exited the program and a message came up "Compaction Error, Mail will set back to pre compaction", something like that. Then when I ran Mail again the Sent folder was empty. Holy Cow !!!
This happened before about 5 months ago.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Pete,
On your initial post to start this Topic, your Profile said 10.4.2 -- I took my lead from that. If running 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11, then it is a different problem, and is a truly Overstuffed Mailbox. See:

  • TS3276 My e-mails are just sitting in my outbox for hours and hours!  Have checked connections and all fine.

This has just started happening every now and then, e-mails I try to send just sit in my Mac outbox - it is making working from home extremely taxing!  I can recieve e-mails fine?

Hi ooze, I can tell you I am over Mavericks mail. I have had problems almost daily with it, from will not send, will not retrieve at all, will not retrieve from some mail servers. Today my iMac would could not retrieve from hotmail, but would send OK. I eventually cranked up the macpro and immediately mail downloaded. It is also saving mutiple drafts of the same email and doesn't remove draft for sometime after it's sent.
If this ever settles down I doubt I will upgrade again, it's too painful. The strange thing is some ppl have no problems at all.

  • Shared mailbox outlook 2013 sent mail sitting in outbox folder

    Hi guys,
I am hope you might be able to assist.
I have users who access a shared mailbox (primary mailbox) as delegates with full permissions and send as permissions. They also have a nested mailbox which is their own personal mailbox. Mail sends from both mailboxes and when it behaves mail gets delivered
to the sent item of the sender. But on a common recurrence mail sits in the Outbox of the delegate mailbox when sent from that mailbox. They can hit send/receive and it will force mail to send and also mail can delay for several minutes at times. This is also
    seen in OWA.
Removing the nested mailbox and adding it as a additional mailbox allows mail to flow without issue but mail sent from the additional mailbox gets placed in the sent items of the primary mailbox. Client would prefer the sent items to be kept separate (tried
    DelegateSentItemsStyle).
The exchange is a Exchange 2013 VM server and the client's use remote desktop services to access the platform. Also each Windows mail client is configured to use HTTP and cache mode is disabled for remote services. Last applied update was on the 08/2014.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    PJ

    Hi,
From your description, when you send a message from shared mailbox, the message is sitting in Outbox folder. I have seen some people have this issue, it is recommended to run Outlook using Cached mode as a workaround.
Hope this can be helpful to you.
