Sent messages are sometimes not saved

Hello,
This is a follow up to this thread, which was never answered and is now archived:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2213207
In Mail.app, using IMAP, my sent messages are sometimes not saved. I'd say about 1 in 20 never appear in my Sent folder. The recipients always receive these messages, so it's not a delivery problem. I just don't retain a copy of them. This is very frustrating if I send a cost estimate to a client, or a detailed description of a technical problem that I need to refer back to later.
I've rebuilt my mailboxes and I've checked my IMAP folders on the server via a webmail interface, and the messages are not there.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's hard to believe I'm the only one, but it's hard to search for this problem because my search results are always full of people who have lost or can't save -any- of their sent messages. My problem is intermittent and random.
Thanks,
-Arlo

I have a similar occasional problem with an IMAP account using a Comcast Business Class Exchange server. I use Mail and my iPhone to access the account; I'm running OS X 10.6.4 on my laptop but my "sent messages" issue predates the latest release.
The first time I noticed this issue I thought, "I'll just access my mail via the Comcast web portal. It'll be in the 'sent' folder there." No dice. The "sent" messages simply never stay on the server, yet my recipients get them.
It's distressing. First, the solution would appear to be a switch to a MS mail client, which I swore off years ago. Second, I rely on having a "sent" message as a record. I switched off IDLE per your suggestion, Ernie, but otherwise I'm in the same boat as the others here. Please keep this thread alive. I'm hopeful that this can be resolved.

  • Sent items are sometimes not saved

    Hi,
I have an intermittent problem in Mail 2.0.5, where some e-mails are not being saved in the sent items folder I have set up.
I'm using IMAP, and have selected the option to store messages on the server, and have selected a folder to use for sent items. Most of my sent messages go there.
Sometimes, (as far as I can remember it's only when replying or forwarding) my sent messages disappear. If I look in the sent items folder immediately I've sent the message, I see it there for a split second before it vanishes. If I click on the arrow next to the message I've replied to or forwarded, I get an error stating the message could not be found. Spotlight turns up nothing when I look for these lost messages.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot,
    Ben

I have the same problem, and I think my mail is an older version 1.3.11 (I don't know why it's not updated though!!) Anyway... it's very frustrating, but I know that even it's not copied in the sent forder, the recipient receive the message. But We don't have any proof until the recipient reply or tell us that he had it. I could say that 97% of my message are copied in the sent folder and the other 3% is lost I don't know where... Why ? I don't understand... I there a probleme with the server .mac or the Mail app. ???
    Thank you

  • Icloud sent messages on device not saved in sent folder

My icloud email is set up as an IMAP account on my Android phone and Windows computer (using EmClient).  Sent messages are not being saved to the sent folder.  I tried a message online in icloud and on my ipdad mini and there was no problem there with saving my sent message in the sent folder.  How can I fix this?

This is a long shot, but Apple is going to start requiring you to set up app-specific passwords in order to allow third-party apps to access data from your iCloud account.  This is outlined in this document: Using app-specific passwords.  This isn't supposed to be implemented until October, but maybe changes are already taking place behind the scenes in the way third-party apps sync with iCloud that is causing them to "misbehave".
Ask EmClient support if they are hearing from there customers that they can no longer sync with iCloud, and if is, if it is because of this new policy.   If so, you may need to just put up with it until Oct. 1st. when you can generate a password for these apps.

  • Sent messages are no longer saved

    Hi guys!
Mail does no longer save my sent messages although the setting are set that way! Any suggestions? It's pretty annoying because you never know if messages are sent. I also doesn't make that "sending sound" anymore.
Thanks for your help - will try to help you too if i know answers...

If store sent messages on the server is not selected under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Sent Messages (name of your IMAP account in parenthesis).mbox.
Confirm there is only one Sent Messages.mbox folder for this account in the Mailboxes folder.
If so, move this mailbox folder to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Sent Messages.mbox folder for the account will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder when sending the next message with the account. Send a test message to yourself to confirm if the sent message is available within the account's Sent mailbox under Sent in the mailboxes drawer.
If so, you can use the Import Mailboxes feature to import the old Sent Messages.mbox for this account moved to the Desktop.

  • I am able to change and add bookmarks, but these changes are sometimes not saved when I restart Firefox.

Since updating to Firefox 4, changes to bookmarks are saved sometimes after restart, but not usually (maybe 25% of the time). The problem sounds exactly like what is described on the [[Bookmarks not saved]] help page, yet after making all the recommended changes, the problem persists. I have also performed the recommended actions on the [[Toolbar keeps resetting]] help page, with no luck there either.
The only other thing that I can think of that may be helpful is that I use Firefox Sync between two computers, and both seem to be having this problem.

I have some more information, in case it helps. During one Firefox session, I made about 8 changes to my bookmarks. When I restarted Firefox, the first few changes I had made were saved, but the rest were not. Additionally, the favicons that were present during my last session (that I hadn't had before that session) were reverted to the default favicon. I hope this helps!

  • Sent Messages are not saved in Sent Mailbox

It was working correctly but suddenly all my sent messages are not saved in the Sent Mailbox. I follow all the Mail Help instructions but nothing seems to work. Hope that someone can help me. I asked for help on december 14 but it was not helpful

The mailboxes drawer contains all mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk (if you have Junk Mail set to automatic).
If you have a .Mac or IMAP type account, you also have an account named icon for the .Mac or IMAP type account at the bottom of the mailboxes drawer. It is named by the Account Description you provided/entered for the account under the Account Information tab for the account preferences.
If you select save Sent messages on the server for a .Mac or IMAP type account, the account's Sent mailbox will be available under the account named icon in the mailboxes drawer along with all other server stored mailboxes.
To open the account named icon for your .Mac account to reveal the server stored mailboxes including the account's Sent mailbox, select the black triangle beside your .Mac account icon in the mailboxes drawer pointing it down.
Select the account's Sent mailbox and at the menu bar, go to Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For and select Sent.
If you deselect store Sent messages on the server for the account preferences, the account's Sent mailbox will be available under Sent in the mailboxes drawer and you can't use "Use This Mailbox For" for mailboxes stored locally on the hard drive. It can only be used for .Mac or IMAP type account mailboxes that are stored on the server.

  • Mail 3, smtp, IMAP: sent messages are not saved on server

    Hello,
I had problems using Mail 3 after I upgraded to Leopard, so I used Thunderbird for the time being. With the update 10.5.1 I tried again: most problems solved BUT: sent messages are not saved on the server in mailbox "Sent".
Some background: I deleted the folder "<User>/Library/Mail" and "<User>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist" and configured Mail from scratch.
To be sure: I still have Thunderbird installed, and when I send with Thunderbird: a copy is placed in "Sent".
Another thing I noticed: it takes more than a minute to send from Mail 3 and a few seconds when I send from Thunderbird. I have another Macbook Pro with 10.5.0 installed: same problem with sending.
    Any help is appreciated.
    rene

Well, be stumped I did all that, but to be sure, I did it again:
I have a lot folders with subfolders and they are shown under my account name.
I created a new folder "test" in my IMAP account and designated it to be the new "Sent" folder. It replaces my previous Sent folder in the group Inbox, Drafts, Trash. My previous Sent folder now appears under my account name as a "normal" folder.
I send a message and the Activity monitor says: +"Delivering message: copying message"+. After a minute Mail is done. I check my (new) "Sent" folder and it's empty. I double check in webmail: it's empty.
So I go to the Finder and look in my IMAP folder: <user>/Library/Mail/<IMAP-account>/test.imapmbox and there is no folder "Messages", only Info.plist.
Then I try to move a message to the "Sent' folder: for a minute the Activity moinor says: Copying messages: copying message" and then Mail prompts: +"The message "testing" could not be+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+.
So it looks like Mail has a problem with the default "Sent" folder: it cannot copy messages to that folder at all! Aha!
But then I try to move a message to a "normal" IMAP folder: same thing! Mail cannot copy to any folder!
In both instances Mail says: +"The message "..." could not be be moved to the mailbox "..."+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+
Last thing: I try to move a message to a folder in the same account again. But in the process I quit Mail. I open Mail again and Mail is performing pending operations: copying message. After a while Mail prompts: +"Operation could not be completed. (MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028.)"+ and crashes... I open Mail again and it tries to peform pending operations. Again: an error message and Mail crashes. This keeps going on so I delete the whole account and set it up again. Nothing's changed...
I can receive and send, but sent messages are not copied to the "Sent" folder and I cannot move messages around within a IMAP account. But TADA!!!: I can move messages from account to account.

  • Gmail sent messages are being continously moved to Outbox in OS X mail.

Gmail sent messages are being moved to Outbox in OS X mail. You can not be sure whether they have been sent or going to be sent anyway. No network problems or SMTP problems exist, a variety of IOS and Windows equipment uses gmail without glitches.(OS X 10.9.2)

This stopped happening as mysteriously as it started for me. The only change made on my end is that I added some seemingly unrelated filter Rules - around the same time (i can't be entirely certain if it stopped before or after the Rule changes) the proble with sent messages being marked as unread stopped. I doubt that the Rules actually had a direct effect, though perhaps it altered the structure of memory enough to stop the bug from occurring (something which I've seen many times in my 40 years of programming).

  • Upon opening Mail this morning to check when I'd sent a draft I wrote yesterday, I noticed all my sent messages are missing.

Upon opening Mail this morning to check when I'd sent a draft I wrote yesterday, I noticed all my sent messages are missing. I had mail dating back ten years in there. When I go to Time Machine to restore, only today's Sent Mailbox is available. Time Machine has been backing up seamlessly for months, so there should not be a problem finding a backup. What's going on and how do I restore the Sent Mailbox?
I am using 10.7.4 on a MacBook Pro
    Laura

Unless your TM drive is messed up, the backups should be there. So relax a bit.
The mail is stored in your Home Library folder, not the hard drive Library folder. The Home Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, select Go in the Finder and hold the option key down. Select Library in the submenu. A Finder window will open up in your Home Library.
From there, you will navigate to the Mail folder, then V2 folder. All main mailboxes for each account will be in their account folder. There is another folder called Mailboxes which will store all local folders.
If you select the V2 folder in the Finder window, then enter TM, you should be able to go back into time.
Before doing anything else, first open Disk Utility and verify that your hard drive is OK.
If it is, go into the hard drive and navigate to the Home Library/Mail/V2 folder. Open each mail account and click on the mailbox your messages were in, like the inbox. See if the messages folder contains messages.
I just want you to see if the mailboxes are in the account folders and that they contain data. If so, we will continue from there. There's no use in trying to restore if there are problems just yet. Let's verify this first, then we will proceed.

  • ReportViewer Parameter area state not saved without to refresh in ie

    Hi from Germany,
we have created a master detail report with 3 levels and some parameters defined. Connected are these 3 reports by drill throughs with "go to report"-actions. We use the report manager for the navigation to the reports.
For a faster go back from a detail report to its higher level report again we added links in the header with go to url actions and the expression "javascript:history.go(-1)").
It works great but in the ie (version 10 and 11, too) there is a not wanted behavior after the user has updated the parameter values and clicked on "Show report". The report is rendered now with the changed parameters fine BUT the parameter area
    is still opened.
First question: Is there a way to collapse the parameter area also with the click on "Show report"-Button?
Now users close often the parameter section and drill through to the next level report. When you go from there back (history.go(-1) or also with the browsers back-button) the report before opens but again with an displayed parameter area. It forgots that users
    have collapsed it before.
2nd question: It seems that the last state with the closed parameter area was not saved (in the session?). Can someone explain me why and if there is a way to solve it?
In firefox it works like we wanted. There is the parameter area collapsed automaticly after go back in history. It seems it is realy a bug in the ie.
I have found out a workaround:
when you close the parameter area in ie and click after it on the refresh-button on the reportviewer-toolbar then the collapsed state is registered and go back to this report opens it right with collapsed parameters. Also a refresh by the browser-button opens
    the report with collapsed parameters.
It seems for me it is a bug, isn't it?
    Kind regards
    René
    René

    Hi René,
If I understand correctly, you want to hide the parameter area when the report render in report server. I have create a simple report to test, however, I cannot reproduce the same issue.
Based on my test, it has two situation when we go to subreport the parameter area cannot hide.
If we are use “Go to URL” action jump to the subreport, it will not hide the parameter area.
We have not pass the parameter value to the subreport, it will display the parameter area for us to choose parameter value.
If you are not above situation, we can use “Go to URL”
action to work around it. To add parameter (rc:Parameters, rc:Toolbar) in report URL to control the parameter area visibility. Please refer to the following URL:
    Http://ServerName/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx? %2fReportFolder%2fReportName&rs:Command=Render&rc:Parameters=Collapsed
    Reference:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jgalla/archive/2009/03/23/hiding-parameter-area-when-viewing-reports.aspx?Redirected=true
If there are any misunderstanding, please elaborate the issue for further investigation.

  • Changing where the sent messages are stored

Hi, I was wondering is there any way you can change where the sent messages are stored. I have switched from a few programs.. and there is a 'sent' folder and ' sent messages' folder on my folder list in addition to that of what mail is putting them in. I just want one folder.

Sounds like you are accessing an IMAP type account.
If so, is this the only email account and account type you are accessing with the Mail.app?

  • Windows Live mail - Imported sent messages are incorrectly displaying destination address

I imported Windows live mail messages from XP to 8.1... everything is ok except for the fact that the "Sent" messages are listed as sent to "the owners address" which is really the "source" address for all these old sent messages....Client
needs these back to how they were on the XP machine... This is a result of importing using the import tool method from the file menu, and the same result after I did it manually by dragging old files into the new "Windows live mail" sub-directory
(sent folder).... I think its a setting or something I need to change so I can either redo it....

  • Sent Messages are not allway saved

I use Mail with several imap account and for the last few weeks I recognized
that the emails I did sent were not allways saved in the 'sent messages' folder of the corresponding imap account. They are sent but they just dissapear, also on the imap server itself.
Deleting Envelope Index and restoring the sent folder did not solve this strange behavior.
It seems that sometimes it depends on wether an attachment was added to the mail or not.
But the sent messages _are saved_ when I first press the 'save as draft' button and right after that press the send button.
    Any ideas?

I've had the same problem for a while, even before Leopard. It definitely occurs more often when sending bigger messages (i.e. with attachments), and on slower connections (cell card, or even shaky wifi). Always unsettling when I notice it, and seriously frustrating when a Send fails and I've forgotten to Save as Draft.
