SEO friendly site search urls

We have the site search module set up but it returns unfriendly looking urls for all the results despite us having SEO friendly urls for each catalogue and product. Is there some way to rectify this?

I found this question while trying to solve a somewhat related question.
We needed the urls for the pages to be clean when they arrive at the page in order to drive some specific scripting.
Basically:
page loads
script checks the page's url
if the path matches a certain parameters, perform a certain functions
The issue we were running into, was that when people came on to a page from the search results page
the url would look like this:
http://www.website.com/Default.aspx?PageID=45247074&A=SearchResult&SearchID=3759787&ObjectID=35247074&ObjectType=1
which prevented the scripting from working correctly.
The work around we came up with was using the {module_breadcrumbs,} module in a hidden span on the page and having our script key off of that.
It certainly wouldn't help any SEO issues but if you were solely looking to make the page display it's human friendly url, that module and some relatively simple JS would work.

• SEO friendly URL Compression

Hi,
I am using URLCompression servlet in my application to reduce the URL size.
The generated compressed urls are similar to the one given below.
http://10.103.22.234/context/wlp.c?__c=7d5
However the id names are hex numers (eg __c=7d5) and are not meaningful IDs that my business users would want.
I would like to pass meaningful names as IDs to the Compression Servlet (eg __c=product-page).
Could anyone please provide various options for generating SEO friendly/meaningful compressed URLs?
I am using netui tags and pageUrl apis to create portal URLs extensive in my web app to create URLs.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,

• SEO Friendly URLs for FAQ module

Question:
Am I the only one to notice that SEO friendly URL's aren't available for the FAQ module?
I think they really should be available, does anyone else agree?
http://www.foamgutterfilter.com.au/FAQRetrieve.aspx?ID=43236 ; is quite an ugly URL,
having something like http://www.foamgutterfilter.com.au/FAQ/is-it-fire-proof would be a billion times better.
Answer:
You are correct, but you don't have to use this module if these things are an issue. You can build a more complex and powerful FAQ module with a web app.

Hi,
Correct if needing SEO friendly URLs use Web Apps instead as the workaround for your FAQs.

• SEO Friendly shopping cart

I am wanting to use a SEO friendly shopping cart that uses search engine automatically generated urls and meta descriptions. It has to be a dreamweaver extension. What are the options I know of webassist ecart and cartweaver. Anything else?

SEO for an online store is much the same as any web site. Make sure your content is well written both from a human and search engine's point of view. Your product names, categories, short and long descriptions should ALL be concise and to the point and contain key words an fraises that are most likely to be used when users are searching for your type of products and services.
For Cartweaver, one of the SEO features we built in is that the page titles and meta descriptions are populated based on the product name and short description respectively. For the product search results page they are populated by the categories searched on and the category description related to the category - you enter these in the admin. Doing this exposes a lot of good content to Google and the rest for each product returned. We also have a little utility that generates a Google friendly XML sitemap that you can point to in your Google Sitemaps account.
Out side of that, making your online store SEO is the same as any web site. Attention to details and good content writing are your primary toolls and assets!
Hope this helps.

• If I rebuild my PDF Handbook in Flash will it be just as SEO friendly?

I have a handbook published on our web site as a PDF see http://kinsler.com/handbook124.html
it seems very SEO freindly.
If I rebuild it as a Flash based handbook will it be just as SEO freindly?
If yes, what is the proper proceedure to accomoplish this.

Hi Brad,
There is also some flip book software such as Kvisoft Flipbook Maker that can help you create flash flipbook from PDF with SEO friendly, but maybe you need take more time to do your rank for search engine, the software provide you to fill meta tag including tilte, description, keywords, etc when you publish as HTML format, i think this is good for search engine. Of course, there are also other flipbook applications out there, but what ever which one you use, if you want to get a good rank for your handbook, i think do some SEO work for it is necessory.

• Seo friendly website

Can we make our wesite seo friendly using adobe flash's features ?

SEO does not simply involve meta data.
https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35624#1
Google wrote:
Google will sometimes use the meta description of a page in search results snippets, if we think it gives users a more accurate description than would be possible purely from the on-page content.
While this discusses the display of results, it also reveals how Google tries to interpret the page. Google falls back on meta data when there is nothing that makes sense to it between the body tags. That does not mean you can rely on meta descriptions alone. A competing site with meta descriptions and understandable content between the body tags will still rank better than yours. You've really got to get content between the body tags.

• How do I get PDFs to appear in the site search results?

I have read that the BC site seach will show PDF files in its results - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5077569.
I have added a PDF via the media dowloads and added the litterate to a test page via the module {module_literature,a,}. I then reindexed the site, however when I search for something I do not get any results.
The site search is set up to search "Entire Website (including Secure Zone)",
Any ideas why this doesn't work?
Thanks
Dean

Hi Dean
PM me the site url and few details as how you are trying to search as it should work fine.
You can create media downloads and then in site search if you use keywords such as download name then it should return the result with links corresponding to media items.

• Query parameters in BC and setting up Site Search tracking in Google Analytics

I would like to enable site search tracking in Google Analytics for a non-eCommerce BC site but I do not know what query parameters I need to use to enable site search tracking - can anyone help?!
I can turn Site search tracking 'on' in Analytics but it requires the query parameters to be entered e.g. 's' or 'q'. I have the option of selecting 'strip query parameters out of URL' but I'm not sure what this does and what needs to be done in the backend of BC?
Usually, when an internal search is done within a website (and in this case it is www.newcastleairport.com.au), the URL will indicate the parameters by adding a 'en&q' in the URL. To test what metric would be used for the Airport, I did a search on 'annual report' and the following URL came up (not containing an en&q)
http://www.newcastleairport.com.au/Default.aspx?SiteSearchID=1012&ID=/travellers-search-re sult#.U3A3HmQ-JU0
Any help would be appreciated. There was a previous discussion re this subject but it remained unanswered but there was a suggestion around using javascript within a web app?
Cheers

Hi Sebastian and Manas,
I am trying to set up a hybrid environment and followed the blog posts. Everything was set up as per the guidelines mentioned but still I am not able to fetch any results from SharePoint Online inside my on-premise environment.
There are no errors coming as such. Its just that my on-premise is showing no results from SPO. However if the same user logs on into the Office 365 SPO site he is able to see SPO search results. That means there is no permission related issue specific to
test user.
I am totally out of ideas now. In case you have faced similar issues while setting up the same then any pointers to troubleshoot would be very helpful.

• How can I make my Flash menu SEO Friendly?

Hi all, I have my site at http://www.sgdtechs.com and I really don't like the ugly menu I have there now and I designed a beautiful menu in flash, but I've read online that it's not SEO friendly....
So my question is this, how can I make my menu SEO friendly? Is it even possible?
Thanks for your answers!

Provide an html menu for SEO purposes. If you want to keep the Flash version, consider providing the html at the bottom of the page as text links like you will see in many sites.

• OT: Google Site Search & WWW Search

I finally got Google to recognize my sitemap! (No easy task,
made lots
of mistakes). I then went to Google Free to get what I need
for both
site search & www search. (I'm not entirely sure if the
two are
connected but it was worth the attempt at doing a sitemap.
Just waiting
for stats now)
The site itself sits inside a frame as it's mirror. So, I
know I have to
reveal the true URLs. That's the one I entered into the
Google field to
go to the next step.
There are no pages in our index for "yoursite.com"*
* We cannot perform SiteSearch on this domain(s).
Please remove/change the domain(s)entered, or select
WebSearch only,
by leaving the domain(s) field blank.
There's no help available -- that I could find -- that

It did -- took about 10 hours
But the stats aren't available yet
whatever that means. The explanation seems like "when we get

sitemap is
the first step.

• Site Search Module Re-Direct

Hi guys,
Wondering if there is a way of adding a 're-direct' code to the Site Search Module HTML code, so that people can enter info in the site search box, and rather than keeping them on the same page, it takes them to a new page.
Thanks,
Aaron

Nicole, You was right in the first place but you you said &PageID= for the url when in actual fact it is just ID.
So, Aaron you do as Nicole said first (because it is easier) but use ID instead of PageID so..
/Default.aspx?SiteSearchID=3510&ID=/yoursubfolder/custompage
& is the HTML entitity for & and is better valid markup

• Site Search Functionality

I am looking for a way to search the entire site using an internal search engine. Is there a custom control, or can IIS do this? I'm starting from scratch here, so any information will be helpful.

No no no, I'm just looking to do a plain old site search of content. Part searching is done in a control I believe, and we even have some custom searching for specific types of parts.
What I'm looking for is for somebody to type in the phrase "foo bar" and get a list of results that are related to "foo bar" in order of relevance, much the way Google does with the web (or even a specific site via the site: modifier).
Perhaps my question begs too simple an answer, but I can't seem to figure out what it is. Since this is my first IIS-based site I'm managing, it's possible there is functionality built into it that takes care of it, so I thought that Web Tools might have something instead. One other thing to consider is that Web Tools uses dynamic content based upon values of get variables (I believe pageDetail defines page content), which may or may not interfere with search indexing.
Be not confused: my question has nothing at all to do with SEO or ranking on popular search engines, but is related solely to an internal search engine, if said engine even exists.

• What happened to google site search plugin on Mycroft

I have searched Mycroft (and every other place I could find including opensearchplugins) but I can't find a plugin for Google site search anymore. I also have not found any announcements about it either.
What gives?
FYI: Using "site:{input url here}" on both the https and http google sites works fine. Pasting the current website's url in is an annoying extra step though. I have lost the plugin I once had.
There used to be an addon to make your own plugins (thought it was Add To Search Bar) but none I find now allow me to edit my plugins.
I don't want to use Google custom search because I don't like being logged into Google when I browse and search.
Anyone know a place to download the plugin? Or can you post the code so I can save the xml file in my searchplugins folder?
Also, I know this is not the mycroft site but I get a "forbidden" error when I try to go their forum.
Thanks in advance.

I don't recall that plugin. What did it do exactly? You probably could emulate it with a bookmarklet if it doesn't turn up anywhere. For example, this bookmarklet opens a new tab/window with a site search of the current page's hostname (it's all one line, please ignore the fact that the forum hyperlinks it):
javascript:var%20u='https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3A'+window.location.hostname;%20window.open(u,'_blank');%20void%200;
This variation displays an input box to request any keywords you might want to run against the site. Simply enter to get all results, or type 0 and Enter to cancel your search.
javascript:var%20kw=""+prompt('Enter%20keywords%20or%200%20to%20cancel');if(kw!='0'){var%20u='https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3A'+window.location.hostname;if(kw.length>0)u+='+'+encodeURIComponent(kw);%20window.open(u,'_blank');}%20void%200;
I think I might get some use out of this. :-)
To save a bookmarklet to your Bookmarks Toolbar: copy the script to the clipboard, right-click the Bookmarks Toolbar and choose New Bookmark, paste the script as the location, create the name of your choice, and click Add.
