Separate table and figure numbering sequences

I need some pointers and guideance on how to setup autonumbering for tables and figures separately.  As it is, the number sequence advances upon usage by a table or a figure.  For example,  Table 1,  Figure 2,  Figure 3, Table 4.    What I need in that case is  Table 1, Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 2.

Steve,
The easisest way is to use what's called a series indicator for you autonumber sequence. This consists of a single letter at the star of the autonumber. Typically, one could use F:<n+> for figures and T:<n+> for tables. FM will then number these streams differently. You can make things more complex in your setup (and much easier for the authors) using a numbering matrix where parent heading tags reset the lower level counters (which is what Peter was alluding to).

  • Table and figure numbering in multi-chapter book

Using InDesign CC 2014 I am editing a book that consists of 23 chapters. Each chapters are added to the book separately. There are 5 levels of titles, level 1-4 is numbered (first level is the chapter title), the 5th is not.The numbering of the titles in chapters works very well, but I have problem with numbering of figures and tables.
The numbering of tables and figures should look like this: Table 1.1., 1.2., etc, Figure 1.1., 1.2., etc. The first number is always the chapter number, the second is the number of table/figure in order - within the chapter. I want the second number to re-start in each chapter. But if I select "continue from the previous number" (or something like this - I have Hungarian version, tried to translate to English), the numbering does not re-start with each new chapter, however gets the correct ^H number. If I select "start", all tables and figures will be ^H.1.
My question is: what should I do on one hand to be able to use (and sync) all formats (including tables' and figures' captions with numbers) in the whole book, in the same time making the figures' and tables' numbering having ^H followed by a number re-starts in each chapter? For this, the table and figure number should be which level on the list? What to do with "restart numbering at this level after" option?
I have searched the www from A to Z and back but could not find the answer. Please, help me! Oh, and please, write the how-to description step-by-step (maybe illustrated?), as I use Hungarian version, which makes applying the suggestions a bit difficult. Thank you, in advance, for your kind help!

  • Automating Table and Figure Numbering

I have a large document with many figures and tables that get removed/added or just change locations throughout the document while being reviewed.  It is also required to have a sentence in the text referring to the table/figure.  My question: is there any way to make the table/figure numbers automated so I don't have to keep renumbering them and the corresponding text as they get moved around?
I have checked forums and reference books but haven't been able to find anything about this.  Has anyone else run into this problem?  If so how did you work it out?
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Torben,
This looks exactly like what I need to do and sounds like it would work perfectly but I ran into a small problem...
Got stuck at the first instruction: "Open the Window-Type & Tables - Cross Reference"
Cross Reference doesn't appear in the Type & Tables window.  I'm wondering if this may be the difference between CS3 and CS4.  We are currently using CS3.  I checked the Visual Quick Start book that I have to see if it was just in a different location in the CS3 version but wasn't able to find it.
Do you know of a way to do this same thing in CS3?
Thanks so much for your quick response, you've been so helpful!

  • Table and Figure numbering

Is it possible in a single file document to have section related numbering for Tag=bles and FIgures?
I need to number a document with label such as the following:
Table x.y where x is related to the Header1 tag and x is sequential to the figures or tables within that section.
The section numbering function appears to only work for multifile books

  • Table and Figure Autonumbering

I am currently using FrameMaker 8.0 and having a problem with the autonumbering of my tables and figures.
Is there a way to have these as seperate numbering but still referencing the Chapter number?
    E.g. CHAPTER 1
    Table 1.1
    Figure 1.1
    Figure 1.2
    Table 1.2
    CHAPTER 2
    Figure 2.1
    Table 2.1
    Figure 2.2
    Table 2.2
    Thanks in advanced!
    Skye

    Skye,
If your chapters are separate files, then you should be using the
$chapnum variable and control that at the book level.
If all of your chapters are in a single file, then you have to define
your autonumber sequences to use the matrix method and have the
chapter number paratag reset the sub-ordinate paratag autonumbers.
This is explained in the "Using multiple counters in an autonumber
format" section of the Help file.
The first method is the easiest to use and maintain.

  • Cross-references (MS-Word to WebHelp) not showing up for Tables and Figures

I am converting an MS-Word 2010 document to WebHelp using RH9. Cross-references to numbered sections, appendixes, websites, etc. come out fine. Cross-references to tables and figures do not always appear. In some sections they are there, and in some they are not.
Would anyone be able to offer any insight into how I can get these table and figure cross-references to come out on a regular basis in the WebHelp version? Thank you.

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS MESSAGE: Cross-references to tables and figures NEVER appear in the RH version when coming from MS-Word.
Is there any way to have these cross-references appear? If not, it appears the only solution is to bookmark tables and figures individually and hyperlink to each of them.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Adding Tags in PDF for Tables and Figures

Please let me know how to add tags for Table and Figure in the PDF and also about setting up attributes for that

You can add tags to a PDF Document. If the PDF is untagged you can use the advanced, accessabilty, add tags to the document. If the PDF is already tagged or after you have run the add tags you can use the "touch up reading order" menu and then make the item you want to be a table a table etc....

  • Is there a way to auto-renumber tables and figures in an InCopy document?

I am looking for a script or plugin to be able to auto-renumber figures and tables in large InDesign/InCopy documents. Say if I add a new figure in between figures 4 and 5 I would like all following figures to automatically renumber and all references to those figures in the text to also auto-renumber like in a Word document. Possible? We have over 100 authors that are concerned this can't work. Need help.

The link below is to a zip file containing: 2 PDF files which are excerpts from Help (one on autonumbering and the other on cross-referencing) and a CS6 InCopy file with sample paragraphs using autonumbering for multiple list levels, tables and figures. If you have a Lynda.com account, that's perfect for quickly learning more about cross-references and autonumbering. I created the sample file quickly so I hope I put all of the elements you were trying to see in the file. If not, let me know. I have never posted a link on a forum so again, let me know if there is a problem getting the file. Hope this helps.

  • DECODE versus creating a separate table and doing a join

    Hi,
This question is on what Oracle does internally for the decode function on a field value.
    I have two options:
    (i) use the decode function to do a quick and dirty SQL statement
(ii) create a table that has the results what that decode will do, and do a join with that table.
I tend to shy away from using decode in SQL, since I hate the idea of putting business information into an SQL statement, and also I thought using functions of any kind slowed SQL down, and that one should limit it as much as possible "standard" SQL.
Is the gain from using a separate table real, illusory or is it worse than using DECODE?
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Srini

Thanks for all the responses. I talked with my DBA and decided to go with the table option rather than the decode option. Here are the reasons.
    1. Mixing business information in your program is never a good idea (this of course goes beyond just SQL/Oracle, applying to all programming). This is related to what you mentioned, Kevin. I don't want to restrict the names in my tables simply because I have hard-coded something into my program. Over a period of time, this would result in a minefield of decodes.
    2. I forgot to mention - the decode would be in my 'where' clause - that is why I had the question on speed. It seemed to me that if the system had to translate each field, it could obviously not take advantage of any indexing the column had, and would be slower. Cartesian products are bad enough, we don't want a computation to be tacked on to it as well, right?

I have four devices on one Apple ID, i have seperate emails and phone numbers for each device but when I tried to add one to my iPod, it said that the email was already in use.  I have tried many things and the only guess I have is that either someone else has this email as their iMessage but is fake or it wasn't taken off my old iPod when I reset it.  Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks but that doesn't give me the information I need.  I am putting an email on my ipod for people to contact me for iMessage and FaceTime but when I put the email in, it gives me an error saying that the email cannot be veirified because it is already in use.  My Apple ID can be varified, just not the email that they will contact me with.

  • Separate table and index data in RAC database

    Hi Experts,

In my opinion, if there is striping implemented then performance shouldn't degrade even if the index and table blocks are in one tablespace. Exactly.. striping is NOT a good idea at tablespace level as a tablespace is a logical storage device. It is very difficult to stripe comprehensively/correctly at that level, if not impossible.
Striping is a function of the actual storage system and need to happen at physical level. A proper RAID0 implementation.
So the question about multiple tablespaces for a performance increase should not be about striping - but about issues such as data management, block sizes, transportable tablespaces and so on.
Thus my question (at the OP) - what performance problems are expected and are these relevant to the number of tablespaces?

  • Figure and Table number out of sequence between chapters

I inherited a lengthy Service Manual consisting of 6 separate files (chapters) that are intended to be consolidated into a book when complete. Page numbering, Figure numbering and Table numbering is supposed to be sequential, but I find when I delete a figure in one chapter, the next figure number in the subsequent chapter is out of order.  I'm new to FrameMaker 10 and can't seem to correct this.
    Please help!
    Margie

I've checked the paragraph tags in each chapter, they appear identical:
    C:\tTable\<><><><n+>\t
What happened is, the preceding chapter became shorter and I noticed the next chapter page numbers started incorrectly. I went to Format, Numbering, and changed the starting number to the correct one.  That's when the Table and figure numbers started renumbering from 1.
I'm thinking it might be better to compile as a book, but I'm getting the "unvailable fonts" message. I've checked every font and they seem to be OK, but there's 150 pages and a zillion tags.  Is there any way to make a global deletion ofo fonts?  I can see the problem fonts screened back iin the font list.

  • Table/figure numbering

    Hello all,
I'm in the process of updating a document that we publish annually at my workplace using CS4.  I have figured out how to use paragraph styles so that tables and figures update themselves automatically, and also how to create a crossreference within the text that does the same.  However, I am stuck on a few points:
Our figure numbering can go: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-2, Figure 4, etc.  Or Table 1, Table 2a, Table 2b, Table 3...  Is there a conditional that can be inserted?  Can I create a style so that it does # - # when necessary, and just the number alone when appropriate?  I have a feeling that I have to pick one format or the other...
Our figure numbering starts at Figure 1, and after about 10 figures, the tables start at Table 1.  I cannot figure out how to get the figures and tables to number themselves separately.  My only choices were to have all tables labeled '1', or start where the figures left off (so the first one is labeled '11').  In addition, tables that span multiple pages have different table numbers (probably because they were created as separate tables, so I have to figure out how to join them).
    Thank you for any help.

I used two kinds of formulas.
In the cell A2 of Table B
    the formula is :

    It may be :
    =Table A :: $B
    Apply Fill Down
Copy paste it in cell A1 which is in a header row.
This formula does its duty but it’s not robust enough and will not survive to a Sort.
This is why in B2, I inserted a more robust formula :
    =OFFSET(Table A :: $A$1,ROW()-1,2)
