Separating clips into separate "projects"

I've checked each topic that even looks close to my problem, and can't find an answer (5 pages of this discussion).
I've already imported the tape. It consists of say 50 clips of varying lengths. There are 5 categories each clip might belong to: each of my 4 children and me (home).
I want to create a Project for each of these categories and then save each clip into the appropriate category. When finished, I want all clips for that child in Project A, all clips for Child B in Project B, etc.
I have not been able to do this without saving the entire tape as 5 different projects, then delete the clips that don't "apply" in each Project. This takes up a huge amount of space. I'm not even sure that I get what I want after I do that, as each Project, after alteration, still seems to be just as large as the original.
I really don't want to re-import the movie/tape, stopping at the end of each clip to store it in a separate Project or to set up a new project for the next clip.
There has to be an easier way to do this. What is it, please?

Hi grandpa,
sorry for confusing you with my word-creations… I totally understand, what's your masterplan, I just have ONE kid as hereo of my movies (my son is 5y), and I also try to make "themed movies" (at the beach, soccer, cute, funny etc)…
so, I too have the problem of dozends of hours tape, mixed with all kind of content and then shorten that into 5min…
but I don't import EVERYTHING, and then try to divide it into 5 big "folders"… there's another, more pro tool for editing, called FinalCutExpress… it has a totally different method of handling movies… as in a Hollywood edit lounge, you can import the tapes and first organize them in socalled bin, THEN you start editing… but I can't recommend FCE for a beginner… VERY high learning curve, iM is much more intuitive…
the "one tape for every grandchild"-idea is so wonderful simple&easy, I would do so in future… (labeling is important…)…
another thing, I recommend: after a day/weekend of shooting, start editing immidiatly! your memory is fresh, you're motivated to do it…– get a big external harddrive and store your 5, 6, 8 different projects… you can work on them over a long time simutanously… so, everything grows, not only your grandchildren…
use Hui's hints…
good luck, have fun!

  • Splitting Application into separate projects

I'd tried to split my domain layer (annotated EJB3) into separate project, from my service layer (EJB3 session beans) - that used to run together happily but I got the following error against each entity.
    Exception [TOPLINK-198] (Oracle TopLink - 10g Release 3 (10.1.3.0.0) (Build 060118)): oracle.toplink.exceptions.DescriptorException
Exception Description: In order to use ObjectChangeTrackingPolicy or AttributeChangeTrackingPolicy, class com.davinci.capital.domain.tran.Tran has to implement ChangeTracker interface.
    Descriptor: RelationalDescriptor(com.davinci.capital.domain.tran.Tran --> [DatabaseTable(TRAN)])
When I put the projects back together I still got the problem. I think it might be related to the enhancement process and somehow picking the un-enhanced code.
Is there someway to 'reset' a project/application? I tried removing the project (and leaving the source) and then creating a new one with the source still in place, but the error remains.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Somewhat answered this myself.
Appears that I had some unenhanced domain class files lying around in the DAO layer - these where getting picked up instead of the enhanced ones.
However it appears I there is a problem having EJBs spread around different projects within the application. The above problem appears to be related to having two-way dependencies so I get two copies of classes file created - and it picks up the unenhanced one.
The real problem is that I can't have EJB's in multiple projects - its appears to only create an ejb-jar.xml for EJBs in the "target" project (embedded OC4J) - the EJB's in the related projects are ignored.
If could split EJBs into projects then I would not have two-way dependencies and the original problem goes away.
    Any ideas?

  • Error -2002 when importing quicktime movie clips into iMovie Project

When I import QuickTime movie clips into my project, the scroll bar fills about 1/3 of the way, and then I get this message:
Can't open file "DSCN0812.MOV"; skipping it and continuing. I CLICK "OK," and then this message appears:
    Error during import
The file could not be imported: (-2002)
This happens to every movie clip. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?
    Thanks!

I guess, you try to import 'moving images' from a still cam, right? these are in a codec (=mov is no format, just a container) , iM doesn't support. Use the free tool *Mpeg Streamclip* www.squared5.com to convert these files to 'dv stream' BEFORE importing to iMovie.

  • Imovie locks up/crashes every time I drop a film clip into the project

Almost every time that I drop in a film clip to my current project, iMovie locks up and crashes producing a long readout for Apple.  I've made plenty of projects, but this one is due by Friday. I have to keep waiting to close it and go back in.  Every so often, a clip will drop in perfectly.  Sometimes, just the audio drops in (no video).  This will take forever at this rate!  Any ideas?

You could try converting the clips to DV using MPEG Streamclip, then import the resulting QT DV clips into FCE. In MPEG Streamclip, select Export to QuickTime, then select Compression = "Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC" with a 720x480 frame size. I don't think that selecting "Other" frame size will work, I suspect it would still require rendering once in FCE.
    Alternatives
You could also try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec, selecting the 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) frame size .
You might look into whether your camcorder can downconvert the video to DV during playback, and recapture the video in FCE using the DV-NTSC easy setup.
Provided one of these 3 techniques works, it will be better & faster than rendering your existing video clips in FCE.

  • Importing 4:3 clips into widescreen project

I've set up a widescreen project (PAL DV Anamorphic) and have imported some 16:9 clips which look fine. I also want to put some 4:3 clips into the same project but these are always stretched to widescreen. How can I avoid this?
I've done this in FCP without a problem. Am I missing something obvious?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi,
Open up the clip in QT and select- show movie properties, highlight the video track and deselect 'preserve aspect ratio'. Save. Clip should appear as correct aspect ratio. Don't ask me what is going on here, it all seems back to front for me. Your comment on FCP made me think that something similar could be in effect here. I guess it's a file tag thing.

    Yes.
do I need to do any thing to that clip?
Not deleting the original will help.
do I need to make the clip independent?
Only if you are absolutely determined to delete the original.

  • Import mp4 clip into imovie project

Thought I could drag and drop - but it's not working. Original clip was filmed with the movie setting on my regular digital camera as a .mov file extension. I think I was told I needed to convert to mp4, which I did with isquint. Still can't put the clips into imovie. What am I doing wrong?

Thought I could drag and drop - but it's not working.
Where are you trying to drop the files? "Drag 'n drop" only works if you drop the file on an "Event Name" in the Event Library list and not directly to an Event window. Of course, the audio and video compressed data must be compatible.

  • Importing ITunes clips into FCP project

    Hello everyone,
is it possible to import an ITunes purchased song into the timeline of FCP? And if yes, what happens if I am exporting a videoclip? Will it actually work?
I purchased some songs on ITunes I want to use in a video project and now I am realizing that it might not work because of the copy protection.

you've got a few things going against you here ...
amongst them is the high likelyhood that you have not got the license to use the music clip in your video production, that the use of mp3 compressed audio is not viable in FCP, and yes, the tracks are copy protected (for good reason)

  • How should I combine 30 fps clips and 24 fps clips into a project?

I have both 30 fps footage and 24 fps footage and I would like to create a project that has both. Should I create a 30-fps project or a 24-fps project? Which one will look better?

A little bit. Mostly just playing around.
I would start with 30fps so you can preserve the higher frame rate.
Another consideration is how much of your content is 30fps and how much is 24fps.
If you're doing a lot of this kind of thing you may find the FinalCut Pro X handles it better.

  • GarageBand 2013 did not split a clip into separate clips.

I moved my playhead to the exact location that I wanted the first clip to end at and the second clip to begin at.  I then clicked on Edit, then "Split Regions at Playhead."  However, GarageBand did not split the clip.
Please tell me what else I need to do.
    Thanks!
    Montana B.

    Montana,
did you select the region you want to split? It does not suffice to select the track, the region in the track needs to be highlighted.  You can tell if the region is selected, by the lighter upper border, where the name of the region is.  In the example below, the region in the middle is selected, the other regions not.

  • How to split a "project" (movie) into two separate projects.

After converting two Hi-eight tapes into digital format for use with iMovie 10.0.3 (?), I created a movie called "Japan 1994" , complete with titles, imported still photos, etc. But it was over 2 hours long. (My wife considers any movie longer than 29 minutes 59 seconds as cruel and unusual punishment under the U.S. constitution). So I went to Imovie "Help" .....Hah!!!, surfed the web with my problem, with further frustration. So, I devised my own method:
      1. Created two new (empty) movies, "Nihon 1" and "Nihon 2" (Nihon=Japan, in Japanese)
    2. In  "Japan 1994", found a convenient break point rougly half way through, shift selected several clips up to the half way point.
    3. copied all of these at one time (command C)
    4. Opened "Nihon 1" and pasted (command V) these clips into this project.
    5. Repeated steps 2, 3, 4 for the second "half" (into "Nihon 2")
All of this produced two separate projects of around 1 hour each. Added appropriate titles at the beggining and end of each of the new movies.
    Worked like a charm.
Hope this helps other users of iMoive 10. (whatever).

I have a sandwich. I have been searching how to split the sandwich but it seems you don't split a sandwich. Someone said look in a draw for a tool or something!
    Wow.
There are lots of ways to do what you're asking besides what has been said. You can double click the clip in the Browser. Set In & Out points in the viewer and add the Clip to the sequence. No need to split or cut anything in the sequence.
You really need to learn a bit more before you continue cause this is a pre-noob question. I don't really know how to categorise it.

sidenote, nomenclatura : you drag clips to a Project, not the Project Library..
you can add all clips from one Event into a Project..
    • click into the black background of the Event's Preview
    • hit Apple-A (='all')
