Separating Playlists/outside mp3s and Library

When playing an mp3 file downloaded from the 'net, it is automatically permanently added to the iTunes Library. This is fine unless the mp3 file is, say, 60 min. long, and I only want to hear it once in a while (annoying when playing the Library in "shuffle" mode!) Is there a way to avoid this? Also, is it possible to delete an mp3 file from the Library, but retain it in the Playlist? First post...please be gentle!
Thanks!
Mark

Curt;
Thanks for the suggestion. I have checked the two offending files and there seems to be nothing different about them. They were digitized at 64 kb/s - the same as the others made on the same day which transfer to and play on my iPod. I have even selected them in the iTunes library and used Advanced--> convert to MP3. They get resampled and converted to 128 kb/s (and the size of each file doubles) but the result is still the same - they go into the Unknown podcast folder and will not load on my iPod.
The thing that seems to be different about them is that they automatically go into the podcast folder rather than into a music folder.
The iPod is using version 1.2 software and my iTunes is version 5.0.1

  • How to convert and replace itunes m4a playlist with mp3 playlist

In Itunes, I want to convert a playlist of 200 songs from m4a to mp4 but don't want to have to struggle with creating the new playlist (ie, making a list of the songs and finding them in the library and dragging them into the new replacement playlist) or deleting the old m4a songs from the library (finding them and deleting them either by hunting them down or identifying the m4a duplicates and deleting them).
I know I can convert them en masse within itunes but then I've got to hunt them down in the library to recreate the new playlist and delete the old m4as.
I can't seem to come up with a smooth way of doing that.  I thought I could drag them from itunes to my desktop, or even to a flash drive, but when I drag them back into itunes they don't come back in as mp3s but remain m4as (I did set the preferences import settings to mp3 so I don't know why that aspect doesn't work for me).
Any suggestions for how to do this efficiently would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and thanks again for your input.  I will do whatever works.  Conversion works fine to convert, but then I have to hunt down each of the 200 newly converted songs to recreate the playlist of mp3s, and then hunt down each of the old files in the library to delete them.
So I tried to figure out another way to do it.  It occured to me that if I exported the songs and then re-imported them, then they would be imported as mp3s due to the preference setting in Itunes, but I can't make that happen (they come back in as m4a).  If I could, I thought I could just import (drag them in) to a new playlist and then I could delete the old playlist - allthough the problem then would be that the old playlist songs would still be in the library, but I think I read where I could do something like option delete (from within the old playlist) to actually remove the files from the library.  Then I wouldn't have to hunt for the old songs.
My ignorance is due to my not using the proper terminology.  I just saw the suffix is mp3 so I figured people would know what I meant.  Same for m4a which probably also has a more correct term than that.
Thanks for the reference to Doug's scripts - there's a lot of them there. If I can find a way to contact Doug, I will ask him if he has a script that will do it.

  • MP3 and Memory Stick

I am trying to convert my Library music to MP3 and load it on a memory stick/flash drive to be able to carry it and play the music on MP3 devices. I believe I understand that I must make a new Play List. Go to preferences and change Import Settings to MD3 but I cannot figure how to download to a flash drive. This seems to be for burning a CD. I can be totally wrong with this process for I do not understand how to choose the songs I want from the present I Tunes Library. I would like to change my existing music Library to a new playlist in MP3 and save all on the stick.
Any assistance with the process would be appreciated.

Hey. It seems you got the import settings switched over to .MP3, so what you need to do now is right click on the songs you want to convert to MP3 and select the "Create MP3 Version" option. This will cause it to create a duplicate version on each song you select that is in MP3 format. (You can choose whether or not you want to delete the original .m4a file.) After you have converted the songs you want to mp3 format, you can just drag the song from within iTunes to a folder on the flash drive and it will copy the song to the new location.

  • Converting a playlist to mp3

Anyone know a way to convert a playlist to MP3, and maintain the selection as a playlist? When I do it, I end up adding duplicate songs in MP3 format to my libray, and have to select them all over. A real pain when I've got hundreds of songs to deal with.
White Box PC   Windows XP Pro

The way "Convert Selection to XXX" works in iTunes is to create a new file in the indicated format, and add it to the library. It does not delete or modify the existing file, nor does it alter any playlist.

  • How do I burn a playlist as MP3 without getting heaps of duplicates in my library and the playlist still in the original format?

I thought if I made up a playlist and chose to burn it as MP3 it would just happen. Even after I choose to convert the songs to MP3 I am left with the same message, Only files that are already in MP3 CD format may be burned to an MP3 CD.
Is this really the way it is or am I making some mistake?

Createa playlist with the songs you want.
Then use this script -> http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=quickconvert
    to;
    change the import settings
    create a new playlist
create MP3 versions in this new playlist.
    change the import settings back
Then burn an MP3 CD of this new playlist.
Select the new playlist (only MP3) then Option delete to delete the playlist and all (MP3) songs in it.

  • Re-Installing Windows and Would Like to Keep Playlists and Library

    Hi There.
I have a large collection of music which I have recorded from Vinyls, converted and then put into various playlists in my iTunes library (a very time consuming activity I would rather not repeat).
My PC is absolutely buggered and I need to re-install windows, however I do not want to lose all the playlists I have created with the music. Preferrably I would like to be able to drag folders/files into a folder on my external to then drag back after the reinstall is done. The question I have is what files do I need to transfer?
It would be much appreciated if anyone could advise me what files I need to transfer to my external hard drive (to then transfer back onto the PC after re-installing windows). Note that I have a small number of songs in the Downloads Folder, as opposed to in the itunes folder.
    Thanks Very Much

See the user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested backup strategy.
If you copy out all of your data you will be able to restore it when needed. However it would be better to consolidate the library first as this makes the library portable, meaning you can restore it to any path. Otherwise unconsolidated data (anything outside the media folder) such as that in your downloads folder will need to be restored to exactly the same paths. This is also true if the media folder isn't a direct subfolder of your iTunes library folder.
Ideally you would clone the consolidated library to an external drive, and test that it works, by shift-starting iTunes and chooseing the copy of the library on the external drive, then deauthorize the computer before reinstalling Windows. Use the same tool to copy the library back and then periodically refresh your back up in future.

  • Help! I deleted some playlists from my iPhone 4S, and it deleted the playlists in my iTunes library as well!  What can I do to get my playlists back?

Please help... I've been trying to get rid of a ton of unwanted music on my iPhone 4S.  The music I had marked in iTunes to sync to my phone was not the only music showing up.  In my attempts to get rid of the unwanted music, I decided to delete all the music on my phone. Even after unchecking the "Sync Music" tab, there were still 3 songs left as well as my previous playlists.  So, I deleted the playlists... which appears to have simultaneously deleted the playlists from my iTunes library!  Also, I can not get rid of the remaining songs no matter what I try!!  Please help!!!

If you keep the 4s and send back the 4 you ARE stealing their device. If the decide they want the device back, send them the device that they purchased.
Switching SIMs is irrelevant to the discussion.

  • How to transfer library with play count and top 25 playlist to another itunes library?

    Hi,
I would like to transfer all my music, with the play count and top 25 most played and other playlists to another iTunes library on a Mac. How would I go about doing this?

What exactly are you trying to do?  You already have another library on the computer and wish to add items from another library?  This is not easily done and meeting all the requirements you have posted.  While it is possible to transfer play count I think it is one of the things that requires Applescripting knowledge.
If you are just wanting to move a library from one place to another that is possible, though still tricky because you start encountering user permissions.

  • "Sync" is not working correctly.  selected playlists even when the "Sync selected playlists" was selected and playlists were checked in the music iTunes library.  Do I have a defective iPod touch?

Ever since I bought my ipod touch 4th generation, IOS 4G, 8GB in January 2011, it would not sync selected playlists.
This is even when I have checked 3 things:
    1.  Under Summary/Options, I've checked "Manually manage music and videos" and "sync only checked songs and video."
    2.  When I go to the Music tab and attempt to sync, I have already chosen "selected playlists, artists, albums and genres"
    3.  When I click on "Sync" a window comes up and says "Are you sure you want to sync music?  All existing content on the iPod will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library."
Do I have a defective ipod?

Sync should be an automatic feature that can be triggered manually. Although, I have a two Shuffles, which are obviously not Touches, so they might be different.
If you have your iPod set to manually manage music, the option to sync only checked songs should not do anything. You have to drag songs manually to the iPod on the sidebar to add music (I've created playlists of only songs I want, then I shift-click the whole thing and drag all of the songs at once to update them, that way I don't have to remember what goes where), and you have to manually select and delete songs from the iPod's 'Music' library on the sidebar to remove them.
As for syncing the files, on my shuffles, they sync individual songs (for Get Info information changes ONLY) automatically every time I plug them into iTunes, and again if I make any changes to the Get Info stuff while they're plugged in. For example, if I added a song to my iPod playlist, it wouldn't sync it, but if I changed the genre of a song that's already on it, it will automatically sync.
       Good luck.

  • Update music to Playlist and Library

My son has seven hundred songs on his Ipod, but only 330 are listed in the Playlist and Library Music file. We want to copy the songs from his Ipod 30 gig Video to a new Ipod Touch. How can we update the Playlist and Library file to match the songs on the 30 gig Ipod.

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Upgrade to 7.4.3.1 - Lost Purchased Music, Playlists and Library

I upgraded to 7.4.3.1 last weekend. This weekend I start iTunes and none of my 100+ songs are listed in my library, all of my playlists are gone (replaced with the generic 90's Music, Music Videos, My Top Rated, Recently Added, Recently Played, Top 25 Most Played) playlists - all of which are empty. Also under the "Store" heading...my Purchased folder is gone. I must have had 30+ purchased songs in there.
Any ideas how to get everything back?

Hi, I had the EXACT same thing happen to me.
Upgrade to 7.4.3.1 - Lost Purchased Music, Playlists and Library.
I let iTunes update last Sunday 10/14/07 and today I opened it up and Vista started rebuilding the library, then crashed and said it did not have a solution to this problem and shut iTunes down.
It created a, iTunes Library (Damaged).itl file.
I tried the help file that said to drag the C:\Users\ME\Music\iTunes Music folder onto my Library folder but it crashed after transferring 20 songs or so.
All of my music is in this iTunes Music folder so it is just a matter of trying to get iTunes and Vista to rebuild my Library so I can recreate my Playlist.
So I will keep looking for a solution, but this is getting silly !

  • Songs and playlists disappearing from iTunes library

I desperately need iTunes help.  Anyone an expert out there?  I have spent A LOT if time transferring songs from my computer into my itunes library, and creating Playlists.  Then I sync my phone, and all seems fine.  But when I go back into iTunes to put another song on my phone, all the songs are gone.  Everything that I put into iTunes is gone, all playlists, and all the songs.  It's as if I was never in there.  This has happened twice now.  I don't want to recreate my library and playlists every time I open iTunes!!!!  But I can't just add one new song to my phone either, because as soon as a sync, everything that is already on my phone will be gone!!!  Grrrr!!  Anyone know what's going on??  The songs were not purchased through iTunes, if that makes a difference.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Delete song from playlist and library: only by Shift+Delete ? No right-click menu ?

Am I missing this function somewhere in the drop-down menu, when you right-click on a song from a playlist ?
I see only the "Delete" action, which only removes the song from the playlist, not from the library.
Same as pressing the Delete key on the keyboard.
Shouldn't there be both actions: "Delete From Playlist", and "Delete From Library" (the second one implies it is
also deleted from this playlist and from any other playlist).
And why is Shift-Delete not documented in the Help / Keyboard shortcuts ?

If you are deleting from a playlist and you want to delete for the library as well, you have to press shift and delete.

  • Converting iTunes music to MP3 and/or WMA format

Have a bunch of music (99% of which was originally loaded from my CD library) in iTunes on my Laptop.  I periodically sync that with my iPod Touch 3rd Gen.  Question:  Can a portion of this music be converted from iTunes to MP3 or WMA format?  My car can play music from an SDHC Card but the format has to be one or the other only.  How do I achieve this?  Your time and specific suggestions/solutions are very much appreciated.

    gruntvet wrote:
    Hey Ed2345;
Followed the instructions to convert songs to MP3.  Quite cumbersome.  You would think Apple would have detailed instructions on how to keep the different formated songs separated, filed or whatever would be best to manage them.  Not sure if I need to create a separate playlist for them or library and how?  I tried to export a playlist of 16 converted songs to an SDHC card.  Thought I did but when I put it into the car stereo, nothing happens!  Wow, I may as well give up.  Would you be so kind as to possibly help?  Your time and efforts appreciated.  Joe
    Gruntvet,
After the conversions have completed, put your Music library in Songs view, and sort by "Date Added."  All of your newly created MP3s will be together at the top.
From there, you can just drag them to the SD card.
