September Power Map Update

I have a MSDN subscription at work but cannot find where to update for the latest September 2014 Power Map release. Am I able to do so with MSDN or is it mandatory to have Office 365?

Yes. The most recent you can get without O365 is May.

  • Power Map DirectX 10 or higher

Hi  - I have Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 and downloaded the new Power Map update (9/19 build).  I have a VM on VMware; however, when I launch Power Map, it gives that DirectX 10 or higher error.  I am trying at my wit's end trying
to get this to work. I really want to compare this solution to other visual mapping applications in the market and I see this as a major innovation, just stuck at that last mile.  Any advice?
I have used the MS Remote Desktop and the VMware client and no dice.  I was told by Lara Rubbelke yesterday (9/25) on Twitter that the 9/19 update works on remote desktop; however, I am still stuck.  My Twitter thread if it helps...
    1) My question sent via Twitter to MSFT BI folks:

@ andrewallaway which build are you using? The latest build (9/19) works on remote desktop @ MicrosoftBI @ FaisalMo @ SQLCindy @ AmirNetz
    3) My reply to the above...where I am at now...

Anyone have a solution?  I followed that install guide to the 9/19 update, even did that regedit goodness:) still no dice:(
    Best!
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
We certainly want you to compare Power Map with other mapping visualization solutions as well! We think that you'll like what you see.
Power Map requires DirectX 10 to work properly. My understanding is that current versions of VMware do not yet support DirectX 10 which may help to explain why you're having the experiences that you are.
Try running DXDiag on the system that you want to run Power Map on, be it local, remote or virtual. If DXDiag says that machine supports DDI Version 10 or higher then Power Map should work including via Remote Desktop to that machine.
    I hope this helps!

  • Power Map filter option missing

I have an end user who is more of a power user in the company.  They're using Power
Maps add-in for excel and are expecting this
filter option but its currently not displayed. I have run all MS updates after the add-in was installed as well as a restart to the system.
I have also found other articles about manually updating office but
those options aren't available in our version of office (pro plus x64 15.0.4675.1000).  The registry keys are not even there.
I deployed our MS office via GPO startup script and MSI file.
Has anyone run into this or have even a hint as to what may be wrong?

    Hi k4rizma858,
According to your description, you said"I deployed our MS office via GPO startup script and MSI file. ", it seems you’re using Microsoft Office 2013. I regret to tell you, Office 2013 doesn’t support the filter function of Power Map,
and Power Map is an unsupported add-in in Office 2013. Please read this content:
    https://support.office.com/en-in/article/Power-Map-for-Excel-82d65bd7-70c9-48a3-8356-6b0e82472d74
Microsoft updates to Excel Power Map with two big features, Power Map Filtering and Custom Maps in September 2014, and the features of Power Map are only enhanced for Office 365. You can get these messages from these links:
    http://blogs.office.com/2014/09/09/excel-power-map-september-update/
    http://microsoft-news.com/microsoft-updates-excel-power-map-with-power-map-filtering-and-custom-maps/
Thus, if you really need to use the filter function of a map. You can use the Office 365 to fulfill your needs or you can try to use Bing Maps in Office 2013.
    Hope it’s helpful.

  • Power Map is not shown in the Ribbon

I have seen similar questions before, but many updates has happened for Power Map from last year when that question was asked. So sure if it is still the same situation.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/2480e2d8-a75d-4a80-a8d6-71cf5be97bf4/power-map-addin-enabled-but-no-ribbon-shortcut?forum=powermap
Basically, I installed Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus, I enabled Power Pivot, Power View and Power Map, all of them are shown as active under "Excel Options" after you open "File"-"Options"-"Add-Ins". But
only Power Pivot and Power View is shown in the Ribbon. Power Map is supposed to show under "Insert"-"Tours", just next to "Power View"(Please see example).  It is NOT there.
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/excel-help/i-don-t-see-the-power-map-button-in-excel-HA104091292.aspx?CTT=5&origin=HA104091224
I tried uninstall Office and Install it again. I also checked that it is the most recent version (as now 15.0.4659.1001), I checked LoadBehavior in Registry Editor, the value is 3.  But I do find that for Power Pivot and Power View,
there are four values((Default), Description, FriendlyName, LoadBehavior), for Power Map, there are only two ((Default), LoadBehavior). However I tried to create (Description, FriendlyName) for Power Map in Registry Editor, it's still not working. I later
tried to use repair office from "Control Pannel"-"Programs and Features" it's still not working.
I might be Rookie on Power Map and there might already be solutions widely known among profesionals. I really appreciate if professionals can help me to fix that. Considering I spend much more money just to get functions of Power Map addins.
if this is truely a bug in Map Power, I hope Microsoft would be awared of this.
    Thank you

    Hi,
Since you have Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 installed in your PC, you need download and use the Power Map Preview for Excel 2013 as an unsupported add-in.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38395
A new preview version that replaces the earlier preview is available on the Download Center page. The earlier version of the Power Map Preview is expired, and won't work with any version of Excel. If you have the earlier version, uninstall it from Control
Panel, then download and install the current version of the Power Map Preview.

  • Power Map causes Intel HD Graphics Driver to crash or Blue Screen (BAD_POOL_HEADER)

    Hello,
I have a user who is attempting to use Excel 2013's Power Map Add-in, however, he had this to say:
"I can regionally map counties without an issue, but the Zip Code mapping is
always giving me problems. It may be because there are so many zips in the
    state."
He is using a Lenovo 440p laptop with Windows 7 Professional x64 and I have already updated his Intel HD graphics driver using the official driver tool from Intel, has well
as Lenovo's driver update software. Also, here are some screenshots below. Are there plans for a hotfix or can someone advise on a solution? Thank you.

same problem here, easily shows column, bubble or heat map but crashes every time when I choose region map. Trying to draw 64 countries and one single value column on a world map. any solutions?

  • Power Map doesn't display in ribbon

I installed Power Maps Preview and the add-in is active, but it doesn't display in the ribbon. I unistalled the program several times and re-downloaded it, but it still does not work. Many of the discussion threads on this topic contain dead links for fixes
or don't provide much information. How have others solved this issue? I have Home Office 2013. Thanks!

That's a strange one. Run Thinkvantage System Update, or just download and install most recent PM driver and software. Maybe refreshing these will give you PM back. Otherwise, I believe you may also have a setting in the BIOS for the beep. Not in front of my X100 now, but I know I have this setting on my X60s.

  • Power Map has encountered an error and it needs to close, after changing the graphic settings

I've been using the updated Power Map tool successfully over the past few days.
Last night I was playing around with the graphics settings that can be found under the File Tab (I know that should teach me from playing around and following the user guide :-) ) and I changed the detail from Medium to High (I think) and now all that happens
when I click on create a new tour or select an existing tour is
"Power Map has encountered an error and it needs to close. Power Map can collection information about the error and create an e-mail which you will be able to send to Microsoft and help us fix the problem. Do you want to do this?"
The error that gets generated can be seen below.
Thank you for submitting this error information to Microsoft. We appreciate your help!

  • Power Map not working properly

    Hi all
I have worked sporadically with Power Map since the first GeoFlow non-public beta.
Now i have upgraded to the new bits, with both Power Query and Power Map, but my Power Map isn't functioning.
When i plot some data i can se a lot of grey Squares appearring, representing the locations, so the data is being geo coded correctly from Bing, but when i add a measure and expect to see the bars rising on the map, nothing happens.
I have tried on my primary laptop, on a completely newly installed Windows 8 with Office 365 ProPlus and on a newly installed Windows 8 with Office 2013 Professional Plus - all with same result.
I really need to have a working demo environment up and running, so any help would be appreciated.

    Hello again,
We recently released an updated Power Map
preview that now includes VM support. Give it a try!
That said, you mentioned that you're running Parallels and I haven't been able to find confirmation that current versions of Parallels officially support DirectX 10 (which is a system requirement for Power Map). I found a Parallels forum
post saying that Parallels Desktop 8 includes experimental support for DirectX 10 but the current Parallels Desktop 9 landing
page still references DirectX 9. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
    I hope this helps!

  • When will the russian street data be available in Power Map?

    Hi all,
Are there any plans to implement Russian street data in the Power Map?
The regions and cities are added already and it's great for regional and federal companies. But local companies whose only market is their native city and who need to view the data by city district can't generate the map in a convenient way. Calculating
the geographical coordinates seems to be a solution but a time consuming one.
I see Bing now supports Russian streets in a full manner and even in native language. So hopefully it will be implemented the same way in the Power Map soon.
    Thanks.

  • Power Map in Excel 2013

I have recently managed to persuade my company to provide me with a standalone copy of Excel 2013 so that I can use the functionality provided by Power Map Preview for Excel 2013. This is despite the fact that the company currently standardises on Excel
2007. I have had the product installed and activated and it also appears to recognize the Power Map Add on, however the Power Map button remain greyed out. There is nothing to suggest that this version of Excel is incompatible with Power Map Preview however
I cannot get it to work. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. _thanks

    Hi,
As far as I know, Power Map Preview is available in the Office Professional Plus and Office 365 Professional Plus editions, and in the standalone edition of Excel 2013.
And make sure we have enable the Add-in. Go file tab> Options> Add-ins> Com add-ins> Check Power view.
Then, please we need to drag a geographic field such as Country/Region, State/Province, or City to the Power View sheet or view to create a table.
If we do not choose the filed, the map button is greyed out.
Tip    A geographic field might be marked with a small globe icon. This identifies it as a geographic field.
Drag a numeric field such as Sales to the table.
On the Design tab, click Map.
Click Enable Content to send the data to Bing for geocoding through a secured web connection.
Power View creates a map with a dot for each value, such as each city. The size of the dot represents the value.
To convert the dots to pie charts, add a category field to the Color box for the map.

If the Power Map still does not work, please try to install the update to fix it.

  • Power Map and internet connectivity

    Hi,
after I installed Power Map I've got an error
«Power Map encountered an error and cannot be launched. Please check your internet connectivity and try again»
but map in Power View in the same file works fine
    Please, help me

I'm seeing the same thing when going through a proxy server that require authentication. (When using a connection with no proxy / no authentication needed it works great).
My guess is that somewhere, there's a web request that is not picking up the proxy settings... ( someWebReques.Proxy = WebRequest.GetSystemWebProxy();  )
Update: Running Fiddler, I can see a couple of failed (due to proxy authentication) connection attempts from Excel to de-users-preview.sqlazurelabs.com. Not sure if these originate
from PowerMap or from something else, but the HTTP 407 returned by the proxy server is not handled by whatever is trying to connect to that host...
Update 2: I attached a debugger to Excel in an attempt to find what failed. It looks like the root issue is that the web request made by GetBingServiceInfoAsync (in Microsoft.Data.Visualization.VisualizationControls.GeospatialEndpoint)
doesn't use default proxy credentials. When I set the proxy credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials from the debugger before that web request was made (before calling DownloadBits from DownloadDataInternal in System.NetWebClient),
I was able to launch PowerMap behind a web proxy without that error. (However, map refresh didn't work properly, so I guess there are other web requests later that also need proxy credentials). Hope this helps... :)
Update 3: I created a new config file for excel (excel.exe.config) in the office application folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15) with the following content, and I'm now able to launch PowerMap from behind a
    proxy...
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <configuration>
      <system.net>
        <defaultProxy useDefaultCredentials="true" />
      </system.net>
    </configuration>
Update 4: A config file for the PowerQuery/PowerMap executable is also needed; same content as above, but stored in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power Query Preview for Excel\bin and called microsoft.mashup.container.exe.config...
Update 5: If your install path for office is not "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15", then the location where you should put excel.exe.config is the same folder where excel.exe is installed.

  • Excel Stops working everytime I try to start Power Maps

I am a long time Map Point user (since 2002 or 2004), and am trying to convert over to Power Maps. I use Map Point to visualize sales data and sales routes for my reps.  By importing and exporting data by geography.
I have not yet had any luck with starting Power Maps. I have Office 365 through my company and I have downloaded the preview without success.  I am using windows technical preview.  I have confirmed that I have DirectX 11 and am trying to run
    though Excel 2013.
When I try to launch Power Map from the tool bar, I get a message that Microsoft Excel has stopped working and my only option is to close the program.  This happens with any and all spreadsheets.
Can someone please help me understand and fix what's wrong.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft office and that did not help.
    Thank you,
    Jason

Hi Jko3969, when you said: "I have Office 365 through my company and I have downloaded the preview
without success. " what do you mean? That you downloaded the Power Map preview from microsoft downloads? If so that's not the correct version, the version available to download is the old power map preview before microsoft released the final version.
If you have an Office 365 subscription and you installed the Office available from this subscription rather than the "desktop/standalone" version, then you
should already have the newest version available for you, unfortunately it comes disabled by default, . You can enabled it going to File > Options > Add-Ins. In the bottom of the page where it says Manage select COM Add-Ins, hit Go and then select
Power Map for Excel.. this will enable.
You can also try after this to go to File > Account and check for Updates to make sure you have the
latest version of power map installed.
Can you give a try and let us know if you still see this error after that?

  • Do you have any plans to add user polygon (boundary) creation ability to your great Excel Power Map program ?

Hi Microsoft Excel Power Map program team!
I looked @ your Excel Power Map program add on, and it’s great.
However everyone is looking for the ability for the user to create polygon (boundary) maps.
It should not be that hard to add this functionality onto such a great map program you already have.
For example: let’s say one has 10 latitude & longitude coordinates and he wants to see the polygon (boundary) of them on your great map. One should be able to just put those 10 latitude & longitude coordinates in an Excel sheet, fire up your Power
Map, select that it should be plotted as a polygon (boundary) and it will display on the map.
Does Microsoft have any plans to add user polygon (boundary) map creation ability to your great Excel Power Map program?
I would also like to see Excel Power map have USA census tracts built into it just like is has USA zip codes built into it. Census data is also very important as thousands and thousands of people need to display polygon (boundary) for census tracts.
Please let me know if Microsoft has any plans to add user polygon (boundary) creation ability to its great Excel Power Map program?
    Thank you very much!
