Sequence quality much lower than source video

I guess this is the right place to post for FCP 7?
I have a video project in which I've imported high quality video files (1280x1024 screen capture, AVI). I've made sure that my sequence settings match the same dimensions as the source clips and that compression is set to "None." The clip settings can't be modified, and there's no pop-up when I import a clip to the timeline asking if I want to change my sequence settings. I've removed all the attributes to the clips, but there's none applied. I do have to render, though.
When I preview the source video in the viewer it looks great, but in the canvas it looks like it's at half the quality or worse. The render comes out the same - horrible quality, despite being the right dimensions.
I have no idea what I'm missing. Why would it appear fine in the viewer but not in the canvas? Especially if my sequence settings aren't any lower?
I used the default settings when I created the project. If it wasn't set to "use settings from first clip," and somehow that's the issue, how can I change the project's settings without having to redo my whole film? Going to project properties in the edit menu doesn't give me any options for quality, size, etc.

Here's something else for comparison...one of the clips makes me select to change the sequence settings, the other does not. This is a screenshot of the viewer of that clip, next to the sequence with that clip for which it's been set to the exact same settings. Yet you can see a clear quality difference in the full size version...this is what it's like throughout the whole project, whether it's text, image, or video.
I feel like there has to be some simple setting somewhere...like a draft view...that would explain this.

  • Rendering quality always lower than original video

I have some footage that I recorded with my Contour Roam HD Camera and I have edited it in Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0, but every time I render the video that I've edited, the footage comes out at a reduced quality.  I can visibly see that it is reduced because I can see squares that make the footage appear pixelated and these squares do not appear in the original video file.  The recorded video file is 1.16GB in size and it is 14 minutes long.  The video I am trying to render is only 4 minutes long so it should only be about 300-400MB in size.  I have tried using multiple different presets and I have used windows media presets with Nikon D3100 and D3200 HD videos and they seem to render with the same clarity that they started with.  Using windows media presets with the Contour Roam, I have been entirely unable to achieve a quality equal to it's original quality.  I have created multiple custom presets with the bandwidth settings turned all the way up and the closest I was able to get to the original quality was a video that had smaller squares but was 3.0gb in size.  I've downloaded two hour long HD videos from itunes that were 3.0gb in size, why on earth would my 4 minute video be 3.0gb and still not match its original quality?
So bottom line, I need to find out how to render videos at their original quality, or what settings/custom preset will allow me to create this video in a .wmv or .MOV file that is perfectly clear and not 3.0gb at 4 minutes long?
    Thank you

    Bill,
With due respect, your link is misleading for owners of PrE10.  Steve G wrote that over a year ago for PrE versions 4, 7 and 8.  He did not mention versions 9 or 10.
My limited experience is that version 10 has two good choices for YouTube when the shooter is taking AVCHD video to start.
Choice one is Share>Online>YouTube and then through some title, taging and log in screens.
I prefer Choice two that is Share>Computer>AVCHD>Presets drop down menu to "YouTube Widescreen HD" and Save to a temporay folder location.  Then use the YouTube uploader where YouTube will convert the PrE10 optimized file for display.

  • Why is volume of Spotify so much lower than all other apps?

So I've just installed the Spotify app on my Sony z3 and the volume is so much lower than all the other audio out puts.. I have no issue listening to audio normally via the normal music player but with Spotify I have to put volume on max and muck about with equaliser... I'm pretty disappointed about this and if there is no solution I doubt I'll continue beyond the trial as is not fit for purpose as it is.. And help is appreciated.

Yeah it also gives the illusion of crappy sound because you can't hear everything. People think it's muffled because it can't play as loud. I even analyzed the audio to see how it compared to other services by normalizing the audio. Everything sounded the same but at the regular volume it sounds muffled. I really wish they would raise the default volume.

  • Volume in multi cam sequences drastically lower than source clips

When I put a multi cam sequence into a new sequence the volume level is drastically lower than on the source clips.  Each source clip has 2 mono audio tracks instead of 1 stereo track.  Does that make a difference?
    Rex

Typically only A1 is used in the multicam cut, so yes the overall volume would be lower than with all audio tracks active.

  • Import volume much lower than the (clean) CD playback

I had a quick search, and apologise if this has been bashed before...
I'm importing a CD (St Germain - Tourist, in case you were interested). When playing back the CD version, and then the ACC ripped track, the volume is far far lower, its infuriating! Changing the bit rate makes no difference.
The CD signal is clean and crisp, there is no reason for itunes to crank it down... is there any way to fix this on the import? Changing the levels in 'get info' afterwards doesn't make much difference, its still far lower than the original.
    thanks,
    tom

    The first things I would do are;
    1. Go to iTunes > Preferences > Playback, and disable both Sound Enhancer and Sound Check.
    2. Turn off the EQ (accessed by clicking the Equalizer button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window).

  • Audio Inserted In Multitrack Is 3db Lower Than Source

Why is it that when I insert an audio file into multitrack, it automatically plays 3db lower than the source file?
I can double-click on the clip in multitrack and it's full volume in edit view.
    JJ

This is the default multitrack Panning Law option, changeable under Preferences > Multitrack > Panning Mode.
Briefly, when a mono signal is sent to the left and right channels, the perceived volume will be higher when panned center than the source.  The dB reduction on the Master corrects this imbalance and prevents clipping in this scenario.  Changing the preference to "Left/Right Cut (Logarthimic)" should behave as you might expect, where the output level is the same as the source level, though you'll need to manually accomodate any clipping or issues that might occur.

  • Quality in iTunes podcast much lower than original file in iWeb.

    Hi,
My music diary at http://chromatic.se/andreas/Music/Music.html contains both video and audio. The sound I've spent some time on making it sound good.
It plays back great in iWeb and on my site, but if you subscribe to the feed feed://chromatic.se/andreas/Music/rss.xml and play it in iTunes it sounds like crap.
In Garageband and iWeb there is only 1 audio track, but when downloaded and opened in iTunes it has 2 (Audio Track 1 & Audio Track 2).
iTunes automatically chooses track 1 which sounds really bad and I have no clue where it has come from.
    1) How can I stop the iTunes feed from making a crappy track 1 sound at all?
    2) How can I make the iTunes feed choose track 2 over track 1?
    3) Do you have any other suggestions of video services where I can share my videos without losing quality?
    Thank you in advance,
    Andreas D W

    I solved it.
The problem was with iMovie where I did some editing. Even though I deleted the initial audio track and replaced it with a better one from GarageBand, the first audio track stuck with the metadata and never really gone.
After using SimpleMovieX I was able to remove the redundant audio track so all that remains is the high quality track.

  • Ripped DVDs show much darker than source.  Any ideas on how to fix it?

Ok, so this is not quite an ATV question (since I see the darker image when playing directly on iTunes on the Mac) but a lot of people are talking about this topic on this forum...
I've tried everything (or almost everything):
I tried Mac The Ripper + VisualHub (with the "go nuts" option)
I tried Handbrake (up to 8000kps)
I tried MediaFork (up to 8000kps)
Regadless of the framerate, options, different combinations possible on each of those applications, the image generated is considerably darker than when viewing the DVD itself. I'm happy with the rest (resolution, "smoothnes", "chopiness", "blurriness", etc.) but it's killing me that I can't "increase brightness when ripping", so to speak, in order to get something much closer to what's displayed through the DVD.
Does anybody know how to compensate for this? I've seen other people complaining of the same thing but havein't seen any suggestions yet.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Julian

Would you mind sharing the settings you use (or would use) to rip a movie with the highest quality possible (i.e. quality as close to as what you see in the original DVD) but still playable by Apple TV?
Since many of my commercial DVDs are themselves only encoded in 4 to 5 Mbps range and since H.264 represents a more efficient codec than MPEG-2, I personally do no fee obligated to use video data rates equal to the original nor the maximum the profile will allow simply because it is available. I do, however, like the Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding (CAVLC) approach of QT Pro and have adopted its "break points" as, at the very least, starting points for manual conversions. Video data rates for some popular 16:9 encode display H.264 "Main" profile formats appear to include:
    720p24 (1280 x 720 @ 23.98/24 fps or 25 fps.): 5.0 Mbps
    540p30 (960 x 540 @ 23.98/24 fps, 29.97/30 fps): 3.8 Mbps
    480p30 (854 x 480 @ 23,98/24 fps, 29.97/30 fps): 3.0 Mbps
    405p30 (720 x 405 @ 23.98/24 fps, 29,97/30 fps): 2250 Kbps
    360p30 (640 x 360 @ 23.98/24 fps, 29.97/30 fps): 1850 Kbps
Usually recommend testing a 2-4 minute segment that includes a brightly lit scene/a darkly lit scene with rapid vector motion (preferably compound vector motion)/rapid transitions and then adjust the video data rate/quality (quantimizer) settings as needed.

  • DVD Quality Much Poorer Than iMovie Project Play-Back

Hi folks - I have run up against a problem that I haven't had before. Normally, playing iMovies is inferior to the finished product. But this time the finished DVD displays much more shimmering (especially of KB zooms).
Scrolled text sourced from Rolling Credits (which normally results in excellent quality) also displays this shimmering effect, and some of the stills are slighly artifacted.
A full-quality QT movie I made for test purposes is similarly flawed.
Because the stills originated from scanned slides, (though imported via KB), I would not expect absolute perfection, but as said above, the playback quality in iMovie is very acceptable with stable zooming and no shimmer effect. Most of the scrolled text was black on a nearly white background.
[Using iMovie 5.0.2, and iDVD 5 set to Best Quality. Dragged the iMovie package into iDVD.]
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hi Catspaw
I'm glad You addreesed this question. I to asked it about half a Year ago and
then was informed that the qualty was the same but as You see it isn't.
I made a long movie of RedBull FlugTag in Gothenburg Sweden and on the
same DVD i droped a short version from same original material.
Diff. Full movie was a drop of the QT ref movie in the project.
Short version was an export as full quality QT which I dropped into same
theme in iDVD. The short version was significantly more jaggied.
Let's hope for an explanation and if there is any settings in QT full qual that
has to be set to give same quality.

  • Finished iMovie picture quality much worse than when creating movie

created a movie recently.  Mostly stills.  Some video.  Stills were from a mix of iPhone, Droid phone and from professional photographer.  I "finished" the movie, sent it to iDVD, and burned it to DVDs.  The quality looks horribly digital-y.  I thought maybe that's because I viewed it on my wide screen HDTV but when I play the DVD on my iMac the results are the same.  The finished product is almost unwatchable.
The quality in the finished movie is WAY worse than in the original photos.  Can anybody help me?

    Cgulls
Unfortunately iMovie will downgrade the quality of any HD home movie capture due to Apples codec, AIC.  I have spent a lot of time researching this and have come to the conclusion (like many others) that iMovie is rubbish.  The way I found to produce HD footage, either by saving to DVD or .mts files is to create a Windows 7 partition on your loveable Mac, using Boot Camp and a copy of Windows 7.  I then have just trialled Corel VideoStudio Pro X5 and I will say it is fantastic and does what you want iMovie to do....HD.
    Good luck

  • NetStream.bytesTotal is much smaller than the video

I have a video player running online, which sends error messages when the player loops on movie complete.
I am listening to the NetStatusEvent NetStream.Play.Stop to know that the video has completed playing.
I have a video which is more than 2,000,000 bytes, and the NetStream.bytesTotal in the error range between 2,000 and 5,000 bytes.
It looks like the users with this error are using Flash Player 11.1 and Windows 7.

Well, it does not fit the port.  When I had the TV installed, the guy told me I would need HDMI later, and he installed it connected and it has been hanging there unused.
The cord says HDMI on it and it looks like this:

  • New MBP max speaker volume much lower than 2008 MBP

I have just bought a new (black keyboard) MBP. I still have an older 2008 MBP of nearly identical specification (which had started to become unreliable).
The speakers on the old MBP when turned up to maximum, are about 10dB louder than those on the new MBP. This makes the new MBP far too quiet.
I did migrate apps to the new one, but there are no hacks or anything like that.
Is there anything (apart from the System Prefs panel and the application volume control) that would be limiting the speaker volume on the new MBP? Or is it intrinsic to the new model? (I hope not). Happens across all audio apps, including the "bips" from the keyboard volume control keys.
    DN

Yes. The old MBP is much louder. I have the "decibel" app on my iPhone which is surprisingly accurate, and playing the same track on iTunes on the two machines shows a clear difference in output volume (max). Between 8 and 10dB. It's clearly obvious just by ear, too.
The old MBP started behaving erratically (no drag and drop, bluetooth disappeared altogether) and since I'm away from home and the laptop is (in NASA-speak) "mission critical" I bought a new (very pretty) one while I could still transfer apps from the old to the new. Subsequently I was able to fix the problems on the old one (thanks to this list) however, my partner wants the old one (as a Windows-convert wannabe) so the older machine is going to be put to good use.

  • BT Infinity - speed much lower than expected

    Morning all,
I will be raising a call with BT this morning but thought I would post here too.  Eventually got BT infinity installed on the 16th of March after BT messed up the order - I am less than 90 metres to the cabinet.
My speed fluctuates between 17MB and 36MB - I was told by BT that I should expect at least 70MB - I have checked speeds in the AM, mid afternoon, evening and night and have done so for the last week - numerous speed test sites used : speedtest.net / the BT speed test and others provided by other ISPs - all show the same speeds or thereabouts.
Have to say, not massively impressed with Infinity or the service provided by BT.

  • Importing a high-definition clip produces a timeline much longer than the video

I have begun importing high-definition clips in MOV format into my Premier CS4.  I use a hard-disk based video recorder ( a DTE technology FS-100) whichbreaks the video up into 2GB clips each with a duration of 2 minutes, 18 seconds. and 8 frames (2:18.8).  However, Premier thinks that the clip is about 37 minutes long.  When I play the clip in the editor, the video freezes and the sound stops at 2:18.8 with the remaining ~35 minutes showing the same frame.
I can get around this by manually cutting each clip down to 2:18.8, but I shouldn't have to do this.  By the way, when I import standard definition video from the same recorder I don't have this problem; Premier determines the correct length of the clip.
Any ideas of what is going on and how to correct?
    Thanks!

I thought it was a little odd though as you can re-time the clip through the properties menu of the clip and the audio links with it and slows down. I had jsut hoped the same would apply when I just tried using a smoother effect on it.
    Thanks for your help anyway.
