What should the field dominance be set to for a sequence using HD 1440x1080 (16:9) video footage? Upper (odd)?

It depends. If it's progressive, none. Select a clip in the browser and hit command-9 and see what the clip settings are. And then match them. FCP 6 and above will match your sequence settings to your clip settings automatically when you edit the first clip into a new empty sequence.

What Sequence Setting for 4:3 Aspect Ratio?

Just moved up from FCE to FCS2. Do commercials for small market cable and broadcast in SD 4:3 in FCE. Now in FCP I see a sequence setting for Frame Size Aspect Ratio NTSC DV that shows 3:2 aspect. Not really clear on what this is and after pouring through the manuals and searching this forum, still don't get it.
In the end, I want normal SD 4:3 TV commercials. In FCE, it was a simple NTSC setting. Does my sequence in FCP need to be 4:3 or 3:2? Need a little education on this and can't find any explanation anywhere.

What format is your source? I would never export out of FCP in that manner to achieve a frame rate conversion.
There are a couple of ways to change your footage from 23.98 to 29.97. The easiest I feel, is to select all the clips in your 23.98 sequence using CMD+A. Then copy (CMD+C),create a new 29.97 sequence and paste (CMD+V) those clips into your new sequence. Render and export a Quicktime Movie, Self-Contained.
However, I'm curious if you're shooting in HD based on your 23.98 frame rate. If you are, then you should be using a better SD sequence than DV which is 4:1:1 color sub-sampling. You may be throwing away half of your color information by working in that format.

What I had done to try out the new features in FCP vs. FCE was to create a 23.98 timeline (since I am shooting in SD 24pa with a DVX100A), add a Motion Master Template, add a few jpg's to the drop zones, add 3 NTSC-formatted jpg's to the end for the logos, add a Soundtrack music bed.
For future commercials, will likely be shooting 24pa footage, so wanted to figure out working in a 23.98 sequence. Just had not understood how to get it back to 29.98 for the cable company and broadcast stations. Your advice (copy to new sequence) makes it simple. Hopefully based on this info, I am still on the right track to accomplish my goal. I want to get the 24p look for some clients, but deliver the finished spots via upload to the stations' servers in a QT MOV.
If you have any other advice that would improve things, ready, willing and able to listen. Been Mac-ing since Mac Plus days, but new to FCP. Made the switch from Express with the access to 24p shooting. Thanks.

Problem: Sequence setting for adobe premiere pro CS 5.5

I'm using Adobe Pr to edit my video. When I import the video (details as below) to pr, it does not have any image (got sound only)
I'm very confuse about the sequence setting. I'm still new in using adobe software.
Which sequence should be suitable for my video editing?
Camera : Canon EOS 70D
Frame size : 1280 x 720
Frame Rate : 50 frame / second

Does the video play in the Project Window (as shown below) or Source Monitor?
Is there a videofile (apart from the audio part) in the timeline. Does it show black or is the videotrack empty. Has the video track been targeted?

Best sequence setting for use with images?

Hey all.
I'll be working on a project that will be dealing with mostly images. I have them in their original RAW format as well as jpgs. After messing around in Final Cut with the images, I've noticed that the Viewer will display the image crisp and clear and once displayed on the Canvas window, the image is slightly blurred and the quality is decreased slightly which I'm assuming is because of sequence setting? Basically I'm wondering what my settings should be to produce the highest quality images when displayed in a quicktime movie when I export it.

The viewer always presents the image as is. When you place it on the Timeline, it takes on the attributes of the Sequence setting.
Your images might be 4000x3000 pixels, but that's not a video standard. Blowing up any video to those pixel dimensions will make it look awful.

You should use a sequence setting that matches your intended delivery format.
Also, is there a sepia filter in Ppro
You can get a decent sepia look using "Tint" along with "Brightness and Contrast".
Effects > Video Effects > Color Correction
If you need more control of your tinting, you might consider doing your
color correction / tinting in After Effects.

If you are going to digibeta, then choose a Standard Def codec, like 10-bit uncompressed, 8-bit uncompressed or DV50...depending on the drives you have at your disposal to store your media.
DV50 is a good choice, as you can still use firewire drives. The other codecs require a RAID.

Final Cut Pro: Sequence Setting Question

I would like to know what the best sequence setting is for my FCP project.
In my project I mostly use digital still images, shot with a digital camera. I import images into FCP and directly drag them onto a sequence.
JPEG file dimensions 3488x2616
For making stop motion animation, the duration of each frame is extremely short, usually 00:00:00;03.
If the project is 60 seconds, it usually ends up with about 550 or more still images on a sequence.
What should be the appropriate sequence setting for it?
Frame Size: currently set for NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: currently set for NTSC-CCIR601/DV (720x480)
Quicktime Video Settings/Compressor: currently set for DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
in the Advanced field/Frame per Second: currently set for 29.97
Are these settings need to be made before editing the project or could setting changes still be applied to a finished project?
Any advice would be appreciated!!

I export QT movie and make it into a DVD using DVD studio pro.
I was trying to learn about the ProRes the other day but there are many kinds and could not figure out what the best one is for me.
Which prores preset could I use? and could I still change it even the project is done editing?

You can safely cancel that first sequence dialog when creating a new project and follow the advice from post 1.
A wrong sequence could make playback more difficult, but often the more likely reason is that your computer simply isn't up to it. You may need better hardware. An i7 3770K or i7 3930K are what I'd consider starting points for smooth editing of this material.

Sequence Settings for 30F material

Just loaded FCP v5.1 -- I was surprised not to see a Sequence Setting for HDV 1080p30.
What preset do I use for 30f footage shot with a a1?

It's just like DV situations. If you shoot progressive DV, you still set the capture preset to an interlaced setting... the captured files will retain their progressive nature. Same goes for any progressive format actually.
The only format that specifies progressive in it's settings is 24p... but even it can be captured at 29.97 interlaced. Still retains it's progressive nature too.

I am about to start a new project for a client using photographs only. I have two questions:
1. What should I use for the sequence settings? Should I edit with a HD sequence setting?
2. I am going to scan the pics myself. What Pixel or resolution is appropriate to get the best quality? I'm looking for wide screen 16 x 9, not 3 x 4.

First, decde how you are going to deliver this production to your client. Then tell us what that delivery medium will be. Then we'll have some advice for you.
See the section in the FCP manual on using still images. You need to understand that in video there are only pixels, no dots per inch or lines per inch. Those terms are meaningless in video. You wil sand at a size in raw pixels that is only slightly larger than your delivery format.

Set Sequence Call Trace Setting for a SequenceCall Step

Hi there. I need to edit a sequence file automatically with a LabVIEW program. We have a program the is successful in editing and saving a sequence file automatically which goes in and does a few things. However I also need to be able to go in and change a setting in Run Options for the top level SequenceCall steps in Main of MainSequence. I want to be able to change the Sequence Call Trace Setting for the steps from Disable Tracing in Sequence to Enable Tracing in Sequence. However I do not seem to be able to find this in the API call chin anywhere. At this point I am certain that it IS in there somewhere, but probably hidden under an option mask for something. Anyone know where I might find it?
This is NOT something I want to do at execution time. This is something I want to do by launching TestStand in edit mode from LabVIEW to automatically edit and save a new version of the sequence file.

The Automation Refnum going into the top of the TypeCast is using the NI TestStand Adapter API 4.1.1 Version 1.0 as the type library and SequenceCallModule as the Object.

Video camera compatibility for CS5? what sequence setting do I use?

I am new to the extraordinarily complex world of hard drive/hybrid cameras. I have always used tape and firewires with few problems. A student came in today with new camera she just bought a Panasonic SDR –H85. We downloaded a video file, but it would not import into Premiere. I also had no idea which of the dozen new sequence set-ups to use. How do I find out camera compatibility for CS5? (Adobe doesn’t list specific models.) And what sequence setting do I use?

Thanks for your help! For some reason we had a hard time finding these specs. It looks like it is a SD camera, not a High Definition camera (the HD on the side of the camera mistakenly meant Hard Drive, not High Definition?)
At any rate we now need to use the Adobe media encoder to convert the file so that we can import it into Premiere ….all with a loss of quality due to the re-rendering. (btw, what is the best file to re-render?). I suggested that the student who just bought it return it for a camera (preferably High Def) that will work in Premiere. Any suggestions?
