Sequence Settings when using low resolution video

I am going to create a project that will consist of DV 720 x 480 and some really low resolution video from digital still image cameras.
1. If I export as DV NTSC, what is technically happening with the video that is in my Sequence that is smaller than 720 x 480? Is it being stretched to 720 x 480?
2. If my project did not include the 720 x 480 video, would it be better if I adjust the sequence settings to match the size of the low resolution video?
Thanks.

#1: If you make a 720x280 DV NTSC sequence and insert the low-res video, how it appears in the canvas will be how it appears upon export.
#2: Depends on your intended output.

When I play HD video's (720p) they play properly and just fine, when i play lower resolution videos (480) i see lines that run across from left to right in the middle of the screen, I can't find any settings to change to prevent that from happening.  I would think if it was a computer problem it would have more trouble with the HD content than the SD content.
Does anyone know how to handle this?

Firefox 3.6.8 and 3.5 (I downgraded to see if that would solve the issue)

    Flash Player: WIN 10,1,53,64
When using Firefox certain videos play but the image is green and distorted. The image turns into lines and sometimes it half of the screen of the video. Examples are streaming MLB.tv video and some vimeo videos. The odd thing is that it isn’t all Vimeo videos. Is this a flash issue?
The issue does not happen with Internet Explorer which leads me to believe this is an issue with Firefox. I downgraded to 3.5 and the issue still persists.

  • FCP sequence settings when shooting 24p, 2:3:3:2 at 16x9?

I'm attempting to edit my first feature project on FCP after having shot footage on a canon xl2 at 24p, 2:3:3:2 and using the 16:9 frame size.
Can't find specifics about the proper FCP settings anywhere in the manual for editing footage shot this way. So I'm wondering-- since the captured footage shows up in the browser as 720x480, should the sequence setting be dialed in the same? Also should I be editing in the timeline with sequence settings at NTSC DV (3:2)and the anamorphic 16:9 box checked?
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
I've got my notions on all this but am a little nervous about going forward without some reassurance. Appreciate any help you can offer on these questions.

You're best off creating a new, custom Easy Setup to meet your needs...
Press Option-Command-Q to launch the Audio/Video Settings dialog
Select the Sequence Presets tab, then...
    Click DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 and press Duplicate
In the Sequence Preset Editor, check the Anamorphic 16:9 box
Rename this Sequence Preset to DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 Anamorphic and click OK
Back in the Sequence Settings tab, place a checkmark next to your newly created sequence preset to select it as your current preset
Select the Capture Presets tab, and repeat the previous sub-steps for DV-NTSC 48 kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal
(that is, duplicate, adjust for Anamorphic, rename, then select as your preset)
Select the Summary tab and confirm that you've got the correct presets for all selections - outside of what you've adjusted already, Device Control as well as Video Playback should be set to FireWire NTSC - then click the Create Easy Setup button
Enter a name and description, then click OK
After you've saved your preset, click OK to exit Audio/Video Settings
You've now got your system up and running correctly so that you can digitize and edit.
If, for any reason, you screw up your settings, you've now got an Easy Setup that you can simply access at anytime, simple press Control-Q and select it from the options. Or if you're a menubar person, that's Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup.
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
Personally, I leave mine at 100% - never had a problem with it. However, many here advise dialing it down to 70% or so (if I can remember correctly - hopefully someone else will chime in if I'm wrong).
The default thumbnail value is fine as well, in my experience.

  • SEQUENCE SETTINGS CS6  ( CAN'T CHANGE VIDEO SIZE OR frame size  )

    Wow
I am a big fan of Adobe, but this i don't understand. Why can't you cahnge the sequence settiings in CS6. The sequence settings such as video frame size, and frame rate ae graded out. This makes it very hard when dealing with proxies. I am guessing they took this feature out because of the warp stabilizer. They should give you the option to be able to choose between warp stabilizer and sequence settings. If anyone knows how to fix this, Please help!

PP has long fixed the Sequence settings once they're created.  The standard method of dealing with this is to create a new sequence and simply Copy/Paste all the clips from old to new.

  • Sequence settings when mixing 25fps (1920x1080) and 50fps (1280x720) ??

I've got some DSLR footage filmed at different frame rates (25 and 50) and as a result also different sizes (1920 x 1080 / 1280 x 720) compressed as H.264.... can anybody advise me as to what format the footage would edit best in (fastest render times) what my sequence settings (frame rate and frame size) should be in FCP while editing a mixture of both these types of footage? I understand that setting the frame rate at 50 is suitable for slowing 50fps footage down by 50% but would this affect the 25fps footage?
Any help would be brilliant, cheers.

Convert both to ProRes. If you want, Magic Bullet Grinder will make this process very fast, and upscale the 720p footage to 1080, and make the 50fps into smooth slow motion 25fps. It utilizes all the processors in the computer.
Sadly it doesn't bring in the source timecode nor assign a reel number (important to professional editors). The only way to do that is via Log and Transfer...here's the workflow for that: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
Most important is to backup the files, and to convert to ProRes. What footage do you have the most of? What format do you want to deliver? These are what help you decide what format to edit in. Do you want the 50fps to be slow motion? Then use can CONFORM with Cinema Tools. And edit in a 1080p timeline (720p will be upscaled).

  • Screen flicks when using miniDVI - S Video on WinXP

    Hi -
I have installed WinXP using BootCamp. Now when I try to use miniDVI to S-Video the screen on Laptop flicks and the TV shows 'no signal'. I tested this on OSx10 and seems like this setting works and I can see the extended screen on my TV without the laptop screen getting flicked.
Can anyone help in finding the problem. Would appreciate the help.
    Thanks,

    Hello rmj49,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the computer display flickers when using the AMD driver. The issue is probably related to hardware, but there are a couple things I would like you to try fist:
First, please uninstall and reinstall the AMD Driver according to these steps:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then Display Adapters.
    2. Right-click on the AMD driver, and select uninstall.
    3. Restart the computer. This will force a driver to be reinstalled.
If that doesn't help, my other suggestion is to update the computer to Windows 8.1. Using the AMD driver in a different OS might work.
If nothing works, I would contact HP phone support to address the actual AMD card itself. You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

  • 9.2 using low-resolution artwork

I haven't upgraded to 9.2 yet, but have been reading the forums here (and elsewhere). I see that 9.2 now uses thumbnails for the album art, which is of a lower resolution than what is actually embedded into the file. This really concerns me, as the artwork is very important to me. I've spent forever getting and creating high-res art for all my music, and don't want to see low-res thumbnails.
I've read these are used in place of the grid view, and the "artwork" column (these are usually viewed rather small, so these may not matter as much). But can anyone tell me if 9.2 uses the lower quality pic for the main artwork window as well??
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it. Still undecided if I should update to 9.2 or not.
All in all, I am happy with the direction it went in for album artwork processing. The speed at which you can browse in those modes now is significantly faster, and as a result I am actually using those views more now. There are some issues here and there. Some people have reported sync issues with iPod (my initial sync with 9.2 took a while, but the subsequent one was normal), long backup times with their iPhones, and there is a slight bug with the artwork viewer (you cant lock it on "now playing". If you have Time Machine or something of that sort and can easily revert back to 9.1.1 if you dont like it, then I'd say go for it. Likewise if you are willing to deal with some bugs here and there and want the improved performance, I would say upgrade. They will probably release a new update soon anyway.
However, if you're afraid of running into the technical problems, you should be fine with sticking with 9.1.1 until an updated version of 9.2 gets released. Unless that is of course you need 9.2 for iOS/iPhone 4.
I downloaded 9.2 on the first day, and haven't had any real problems with it and don't regret the upgrade at all. In fact Im loving the improved performance. I know many people here are freaking out about the problems with it, but remember this is a support forum and by default there is going to be a bias of issues with iTunes as opposed to the successes.

  • Sequence Settings while using HD footage in 4:3 Aspect Ratio

Maybe this is a silly question but I'm still a little confused when it comes to aspect ratios and sequence settings. I'm in FCP 7 and I want to edit HD footage in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
What should my sequence settings be if I don't want to have to continually render? Or is that even possible?

Tom said the magic words: edited sequence.
For ease of editing, cut your show in its native format, THEN drop into anSD sequence.
i've got a corporate client who does this all the time. But it only allows them to be very sloppy in their shooting, because they can always reframe stuff at this stage. you should see some of that stuff!

  • Using lower resolutions on MacBook Pro Retina a good Idea?

Ever since I got my MBP retina I have been having eye strain issues to the point of basically almost returning the unit. I recently discovered that by using the lower resolutions (1280x800) (1024x640) I am having a much easier time and my eyes relax quite a bit more. My questions is does this have any negative effect on performance? I understand I sacrifice space but I just struggle with the native (1440x900). Or perhaps a none retina display would be the option. I just sold my mid 2009 macbook pro and now regret it.

No the performance would, if anything, improve if you use a lower resolution. Although I can't seem to understand how the retina MBP would give you more eyestrain at 1440x900 than your old 2009 MBP at the same resolution? If the problem is the pixel density then it wouldn't matter if you run the screen at native 1440x900 or 1280x800. You would still have the same amount of pixels running (2880x1800).
Well my answer to your question is; no the performance will not be affected.

  • Parallel sequence Hang when using Select string in CallBacks

    Hi,
I have posted a problem yesterday explainig that my custom interface in C# was Hanging/Locked when using parallel executions.
=> My application works fine when i run the sequences sequentially.
So i have followed my investigations and i found the origin of the problem.
In my application i use a special process model with 2 callbacks :
    ProcessModelPreStep
    ProcessModelPostStep
In these callbacks i had to look for a special step. So i write something like :
    SELECT RunState.Caller.Step.StepType.Name
    CASE "XXXXX"
    End
    CASE "YYYY"
    End
    End
I do replace this syntax by :
    IF StrComp( RunState.Caller.Step.StepType.Name , "XXXXX" ) == 0
    End
    IF StrComp( RunState.Caller.Step.StepType.Name , "YYYY" ) == 0
    End
And then the application hangs no more !!!!
This problem can be viewed directly with TestStand using a parallel processModel containing the callbacks with the select ....
Here are 2 files which can reproduce the problem easily ...

From your sequence files, it looks like you're using TestStand 2010. I believe you might be running into Known Issue 276979 which was fixed in TestStand 2010 SP1.

  • Effect of Adobe "print" settings when using PDF-Maker or printing to PDF

I have accidentally found that the fonts and ('microscopic') visual appearance of a document can change depending upon the setting of the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" which is accessed under Print > Properties > Adobe PDF Settings from within MS Word (2003).  [Acrobat 9.1.0 Pro (trial)].
I had initially thought this was a difference between the print-to-PDF route, and the PDF-Maker route.  There may be a difference, but the more important effect is the settings on the PDF printer, which you might not think to set if using the PDF-Maker. That is, the settings of the PDF printer affect the result of using the PDF-Maker.
Apparently it doesn't matter whether 'system fonts' are embedded in the document or not (for this example).
    Examples follow.
    —DIV
P.S. See my initial query at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/419516.

I am struggling a bit to make sense out of all the files, but a general comment on the process is this. PDF Maker is basically a preprocessor for the Adobe PDF printer. The settings in the PDF Maker preferences can override the settings in the printer. What PDF Maker does is to basically create PDF Marks in the PS file that the printer creates to allow for Distiller to create bookmarks and such. For a comparison, you need to see which job settings are used in each and the options that each job settings uses. Including the system fonts in the PS does not make any difference except to make the PS file smaller. The system will go get the fonts at the time that Distiller creates the PDF (at least that is supposed to be the process). The job settings file will make a difference about whether a font will be embedded or not. As I recall, there were different fonts embedded and used in various versions of your PDFs. The fonts can be viewed with the font tab of the document properties.
This does not answer the questions, but may give you some idea about the process and what to look for as you create these files. It may be that different job settings are used and such, causing a comparison of apples and oranges. I don't have time to look further now, but that might give you some things to consider. (I may not have helped much here since my comments are apparently similar to what I said in the other post).
