Sequence "Zoom"?

Hey all!
Basically, I'm having a problem when editing/exporting.
During editing, the video is perfect in the left screen, but when I place a clip on the timeline and play this/export the video, the video (now on the right side) becomes somehow "zoomed" in. It doesn't crop with black frames, it just merely zooms in towards the center of the image. This causes a few inches of each side of the video to be lost, and any text on the sides of the image disappear either completely or partially.
Here's a photo of the problem. It shows how the text on the left down side of the screen completely disappears on the right side even though both sequences are put as "Fit", and it shows also how the person in the middle of the screen is "bigger".
Any help in this would be truly appreciated as figuring this out on my own is just not working. Thank you!

When one gets either a Zoomed Frame, or gets black borders, it is usually a sign that the Sequence setting does not match the Frame Size of the Source Footage. In CS5/CS5.5, one can drag an Asset to the New Icon at the bottom of the Project Panel, to create a Sequence that does match.
Joe Bloe Premiere has a nice graphic on where the New Icon is. I'll grab his image and post that too.

Cannot map up/down keys for sequence zoom in premiere pro CS 5.5 (Mac)

Hi all,
Since year and day I use in Premiere Pro my own custom keyboard settings, a slightly modified Avid layout. I always kept and saved the .kys file. It's dated all the way back from CS3 and I used it (within WIndows) up to CS 5.
Now I have a Mac with CS 5.5, but a few things annoy me:
- If I want to import my .kys file, where to place it? For CS5 in Windows 7, Its \users\somename\appdata\roaming\adobe\premiere pro\5.0 . I have no clue for a similar location on my Mac.
- More importantly, I cannot create a good working preset based based on Avid. As I map the keys for zooming in the sequence (up and down), it doesn't work and only jumps around to the next and previous screen in my sequence instead of zooming! ANY other key combo works, including FN+Arrow, except for the arrow keys! Thid did not occur on CS5 on my windows machine.

It's possible that the Mac version doesn't use file extensions for these files--that's a common Mac trick.
I went to Keyboard Shortcuts, and then Sequence > Zoom In , Zoom Out. I mapped the keys Up and Down to them. If I select my current sequence I'm working in, and try to zoom in with the freshly mapped keys, nothing happens but again it skips to a later point in the timeline.

Originally the arrow keys are used for 'Next/Previous Screen' in the Avid preset I modified, but I cant find that setting nowhere in my Keyboard Shortcuts dialog.
That's precisely why. I'm not sure how Premiere Pro assigns priority to different commands, but clearly, if those commands are set, they override the desired behavior that you assigned above. The solution is simple: go to Panels > Timeline Panel (or just search for "screen") and clear the shortcuts for Show Next Screen and Show Previous Screen (or assign them to other keyboard shortcuts), like this:
Once you do that, the Up and Down keys as assigned in Application > Sequence > Zoom In/Out will operate as you like.
FWIW, I don't think this qualifies as a bug; it's simply a matter of something having to take precedence/priority over something else. Hope that works for you.

4k Playback in 1080p Sequence - Zoom out in 1/2 resolution

Hi guys,
I'm trying to edit some GH4 4k files in Premiere CC 2014 on a 1080p sequence. But I'm having problem when setting the playback resolution to 1/2.
What happens is that whenever I add some effect, the image in playback will zoom out 50%.
This only happens to 4k footage with effects on it. Without effects or a 1080p clip will playback just fine. Also, this only happens in 1/2 resolution playback. When I set to 1/4 it works just fine.
Can you guys help me?

Red Giants Suits, Film Convert, Premiere "Stylize" effects (But no problem with Mosaic). Premiere Color Balance (HLS). Looks like I don't have problem with "Accelerated Effects".
• have you scaled the 4K footage to fit the 1080 sequence? If so, how exactly?
Yes and no. But I have the problem in both situations. When scaling down I just go to "Motion" and set to 50%. When not scaled, the image "fits" (zoom out 50% when playback).
By the way, I didn't mention that this is just a playback problem. When I export I don't have any issue.

Zoom in to keyframes

Win 7
Premiere CC ver 7.1 (but the same with earlier versions)
I have two keyframes within half a second of each other, a Scale effect. How in the effects control pannel can I zoom in to see the gap. Whichever end of the zoom slider I move it won't zoom in far enough, it just stops. On the sequence timeline I can zoom in all the way.

That what I thought when it first happened with CC, that was one reason I built a new pc, but still the error is there. At least I now know I can zoom in with keyboard short cuts. It's odd that the sequence zooming is fine, I would have thought the code would be the same.

Scaling behaving very strangely with 4K footage in a 1080 sequence

I have brought some 4K footage (4096 x 2160, ProRes 4444) into a new project and placed it in a new 1920 x 1080 sequence. "Default scale to frame size" is unchecked. I elect to "Keep existing settings". As expected, footage comes in a 100% so I'm just seeing the center of the frame. Playback is normal. As I scale down, I can see more of the frame - great.
When I scale below 50% however, things get weird. As I'm scaling down (by dragging the mouse) and cross below 50%, the image in the Program window suddenly jumps back to what appears to be 100% and continues scaling down from there. When I let go of the mouse, it jumps back to what appears to be the correct scale. But things get weirder when I press play. The image in the window doubles in size. I have created a video to show you what I'm seeing.
• My Zoom Level is 100%
• This happens regardless of whether or not I use "Default scale to frame size".
• This happens regardless of what Playback Resolution or Paused Resolution I use.
• This happens whether or not I have Program on a second display.
• This happens no matter what I've tried to do differently so far.

4k Footage in a 1080 sequence

Hello together,
I'm having a new problem in my 1080 sequence. I edited some 4-k-footage in in and scaled it to 50 percent to keep the original framing. When I click on that part in the timeline it looks fine. But when I playback it seems to ignore to resize effect and plays back the zoomed in framing.
I am sure that this is only a small problem, but since I'm new to Premiere, I can't seen to find a solution.

Can I see sharpening detail like I can in Camera Raw?

A book I have on Camera Raw says that I can preview which areas are being affected when sliders for sharpening are moved by holding down the option key (Mac) and then moving the slider for radius, detail, masking. This shows a window that is gray with just the areas being affected by sharpening showing. Is this feature available in Lightroom?

It works exactly like in camera RAW. Just follow this sequence: Zoom in 1:1 on an area of interest (the B&W-type preview does not work in zoomed-out views), hold you option key and (while holding the key) slide the sliders in sharpening back and forth. You will get the exact same view as you see in ACR.

If you click it, the sharpening will reset to the default. You can do this in all the sections of Develop. Handy if you only want to reset a single section. You can always double click on the name of the slider to have just that slider reset to default.
Is there a video tutorial that shows what I should be seeing on screen?

Hotkeys for Keyframe timeline centering in the Viewer ?

Hey all,
I'm trying to work with Keyframes in the Viewer. Problem is I can never zoom in on so I can see both IN & OUT keyframes. I'd like to be able to center the keyframe timeline kinda like I do the sequence timeline, ie.. SHIFT+Z
The keyframes just seem so cramped, especially the IN point.
Any tips ?

Do you know that you can also drag any TAB from the viewer to the timeline. (It will only drop in the viewer if you drag the tab to the tab section of the timeline)
Once there it opens just like a sequence and you have the entire length of the timeline to work in where you can use the standard sequence "zoom in and out" shortcuts.

Sequence Video much more zoomed in

Hey,
The sequence video is zoomed in on my actual clip too far. I don't know hot to go back to a normal view. I tired all the settings (display mode and magnification). I tried making a new project, still a problem. All I did was add the clip to the timeline and its already messed up and over zoomed. The video to the left of the sequence is zoomed fine, not sure why the other isn't.

Zoom in on HDV in a DV sequence

Hi!
I have browsed the internet for an answer, but nothing seems to work for me. Here is the thing:
I have HDV-files in 25fps and 1440 x 1080, the quality looks really nice when I play the file in vlc media player and also in the player window in Premiere. Since the cameraman hardly moved the camera I have created a DV sequence (25 fps, 720 x 576 and upper field dominance to match HDV), to be able to zoom and pan the material. While editing I kept thinking that the blurriness of the picture will go away when I export. Unfortunately I do not have a reference monitor at the moment, so I exported to a DVD via Encore, but the video looked just as crappy as I had feared.
What is the best setting? I want to be able to create a DVD (2 hours long), and maybe also convert it into an MP4-file using standard settings for Vimeo. I would really prefer not to have to go through After Effects. Photoshop or some other time consuming workaround. There must be a good enough way in PP, right?
Btw, I run Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 8, PAL.

Right-click an HDV clip in your DV timeline - is there a check next to "Scale to Frame"? If so, UNcheck that. You want the HD clip to start as full-size in the DV preview window, then use the Motion > Scale controls as needed to reframe the way you need it to look. If Scale to Frame is checked, the HDV clip is scaled to DV, then any further scaling works off of that lower res version, so you've lost the benefit of the extra HD resolution that you had started with!
Scale to Frame can also be set in Preferences, but this only affects clips being imported after the change has been made and does not affect clips already in the Project. Use the right-click method to check or change clips already in use.

Keyboard shortcuts to switch to next sequence and to zoom in

Hello world of video editors!
The more I work with Premiere Pro, the more I like it. There's one thing that's bugging me tho, I don't manage to assign two shortcuts:
I'd like to be able to use ctrl tab to switch to the next open sequence (down in the timelines)
Ideally, also shift ctrl tab to switch to the previous open sequence
I'd like to be able to use cmd - and cmd + to zoom in and out of my timeline. (not make the rows taller or tinier)
Anyone?

Sebastian,
Welcome here as another user of these intriguing programs. Some hot-keys are re-assignable so you can change them, some things apparently aren't. There's a list of all PrPro's "standard" hot-keys available through the Adobe PrPro help files. I think that actually lists the re-assignable ones, and includes all things that can be hot-keyed.

How do I use pan and zoom on vertical photographs without editing out most of the photo?

I am trying to make a slide show. When I have a vertically oriented (portrait) photograph and try to use pan and zoom, the feature eliminates much of the photograph. It seems the pan and zoom feature only works for horizontally oriented (or landscape) photographs. Is there a way to use pan and zoom on vertically oriented photographs to capture all or most of the photograph and zoom in from there?

I decided to use a different strategy to convey the principle. It is most likely that your photos will be 4:3 and you may or may not be taking them into a SD widescreen or HD widescreen project. With all those variables, to get the basic ideas across, I am going to use two models with a generalized scheme.
For this post....
NTSC DV Standard Project - Portrait Oriented JPG, in this case 2448 x 3264 3:4. Could be any Portrait Oriented JPEG any pixel dimensions. But best plan ahead for what you have and what you would like.
Manually set the project preset to NTSC DV Standard.
File Menu/New/Project and, in the new project dialog, set for NTSC DV Standard.
Before exiting the final dialog in that area, put a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". Close out of there.
Next go to the Edit Menu/Preferences/General and remove the check mark next to "Default Scale to Frame Size". Close out of the preferences.
In the opened Premiere Elements Expert workspace, use Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets to get your portrait oriented JPG to the beginning of the Timeline.The 2448 x 3264 3:4 will overwhelm the space in the Edit Mode monitor. That is to be expected. The Timeline Indicator is at the beginning of the Timeline @ 00;00;00;00.
a. Click on the Timeline jpg to select it. With Motion Panel/Scale property (with Constrain Proportions with check mark), you want to scale the image so that the whole is shown within the mode space. You want to see the image's bounding box. See the next screenshot. The bounding box is the white outline around the image. It has handles.
After the scaling to get that look, the important information that you want is on the right in the Motion Panel
Position values 360.0 and 240.0
Scale value 14.6%.
The next phase is as before (See post 21 of this thread...but much of that is repeated below and modified for what is being described at this moment)
With Timeline Indicator at the beginning of Video Track 1 (00;00;00;00), go to Tools Menu/Pan and Zoom and click on it to open the Pan and Zoom workspace.
In the Pan and Zoom workspace, you will see that the feature has created the initial two Focus Frames for you.
Do not do anything to Focus Frame 1 in the bin below the image window.
Click on Focus Frame 2 in the bin below the image window and set the Focus Frame as wanted.
Click on New Frame in the panel to the left of the image window to create a third Focus Frame which will appear in the bin. Set Focus Frame as wanted.
Click on New Frame in the panel to the left of the image window to create a fourth Focus Frame which will appear in the bin. Set the Focus Frame as wanted.
Click Done to the Pan and Zoom workspace so that you are back in the Premiere Elements Expert workspace with its Timeline.
In the Expert workspace,
Move the Timeline Indicator to the last frame of the selected pan and zoom clip 1. In Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded, (Toggle Animation should be active at this point), make sure Position settings are 360.0 and 240.0 and Scale = 14.6% (with Constrain Proportions used).Then go to Tools Menu/Freeze Frame and set the freeze frame for 3 seconds and hit Insert in Movie.
Then move the Timeline Indicator to the first frame of the selected pan and zoom clip 1. In Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded (Toggle Animation should be active at this point), make sure Position settings are 360.0 and 240.0 and Scale = 14.6% (with Constrain Proportions used). Then go to Tools Menu/Freeze Frame and set the freeze frame for 3 seconds and hit Insert in Movie.
Render.
The Timeline content sequence from start to finish should be:
Freeze Frame 3 seconds First Frame of pan and zoom clip 1
Pan and zoom clip 1
Freeze Frame 3 seconds Last Frame of pan and zoom clip 1
Freeze Frame 3 seconds First Frame of pan and zoom clip 2
Pan and zoom clip 2
Freeze Frame 3 seconds Last Frame of pan and zoom clip 2
A Dissolve/Cross Dissolve Video Transition (1.00 seconds) is placed between end of Freeze Frame Last Frame of pan and zoom clip 1 and beginning of Freeze Frame 3 First Frame of pan and zoom clip 2.
Additional pan and zoom portrait oriented jpgs to the Timeline would be treated as above.
What was done above can be applied to any photo with any project preset. The basic idea is to
a. Start with determing the whole picture Position and Scale values as described with the Default Scale to Frame Size option disabled.
b. Do pan and zoom with Pan and Zoom Tool in its workspace
c. Return to Premiere Elements workspace to apply your Position and Scale values to the last frame of pan and zoom clip so that the last frame presents in full clip view. Then go to the first frame of the pan and zoom clip, and apply the Position and Scale values to it so that the first frame presents in full clip view.
d. If you want the whole view to present for more than that one frame, do the freeze frame at each end, with the wanted duration.
e. Apply emblessments as wanted, such as video transitions, an animated graphic flying through the last scene, etc.
We could take this same clip into a NTSC AVCHD Full HD 1080p30 project and do the same, except the Position and Scale values and the Scale % determined at the beginning and used subsequently will be different than in the NTSC DV Standard project.
Please check out the above and see how you do with it. If problems, please indicate where and we will work through them.

How can I be sure the new picture zoom value has taken affect?

Hi,
I'm writing a LV prog that displays a series of pictures (jpegs) one after the other.
The pictures are passed one at a time from the main vi to a sub vi that outputs the picture on its front panel.
Also passed to the sub vi is the smaller of the two dimensions of the picture whichever it may be (width or height). This varies from picture to picture.
The sub vi uses this dimension to calculate the zoom factor to use so that the picture will fill the whole of the picture box on the front panel.
I've used a flat sequence struture to:
1. Caluculate the required zoom factor and write this to the picture box property node.
2. Read the zoom factor from the property node of the picture and wait until it has changed to within 1/100th of the new value. (The reason for not waiting until it is equal to the new value is because they are floating point data types and even if they were minutely out it would wait forever. Anyway, 1/100th is close enough).
3. Write the picture to the picture box.
Even after including step 2 above I still occasionally found that it has displayed the picture before changing the zoom value.
Any ideas? I've attached the sub vi in question. The two inputs: 'PicInput' is the picture to be displayed and 'ZoomDim' is the smallest of the width,height dimensions in pixels determined by the calling vi.
Also, as I said my program sets the zoom value using the smallest of the two dimensions of the jpeg so as it entirely fills the picture box. This means that the other dimension will overspill outside of the box, can this cause any problems such as memory corruption?

The read Zoom Factor is always exactly equal (within Probe display resolution) to the written Zoom Factor. If your system needs several iterations to get the Zoom Factor right, I would try putting in some delay, perhaps enough time to allow the display system to update (i.e, the frame rate).
As for the memory overwrite issue, I do not have any experience. Usually LV's memory manager is pretty good about such things, but someone else will have to answer that question.
