Sequencers/music editors on Solaris

HI all,
Know anyone any sequencer/music editor currently working under Solaris ?
I'm actually using the great Rosegarden, but only under Linux because it needs ALSA...
I'm wondering, nothing to find for Solaris, which is traditionnaly oriented to music and graphics
Or is there considered, to manage a port of ALSA tor the Solaris kernel, like others pure Unix systems (BSD if i good remember) ?
Cheers,
Sergio

Hi Vina,
Unfortunately, the Workshop 8.1 IDE is not supported on Solaris.
The runtime is still supported, hence you would be able to develop workshop application on Windows or Linux and deploy on a Solaris box.
Additional information is available at http://e-docs.bea.com/platform/suppconfigs/configs81/solaris10_sparc/81sp5.html

it would be great if we had (Music Editor) in iTunes

To have a wired atv wake up any PC or Mac is trivial, and Apple hopefully will add the capability in a future software update. But, to wake on wireless isn't so easy. I think a lot of us have our atv's next to our tv so wireless is the only way to go, unless we want to wire our homes. In order to do wireless WOL would require a wireless card feature that nether Macs or the atv currently have. I think apple could make it possible by adding a feature to the airport extreme or time capsule, to listen for the atv call to itunes and send the WOL packet. But this isn't going to happen, to much of a hack.
This assumes you have your mac wired to your base station.

  • How can I use the "gcc compiler and emacs editor" in Solaris 8 for Intel?

I installed Solaris 8 for Intel to my desktop computer.
After the installation, I found I couldn't use the companion software (the software CD included in the Multilinugal Media Kit for Solaris 8) - especially the emacs editor and gcc compilers.
I certainly installed the companion software to my computer. And I can identify that those softwares are
really installed to my system. In order to check out whether I installed them or not, I went to the "System Administrator" and opened the "Solaris Product Registry", in which I identified that all the files in
the companion software were succesfully installed in my computer.
However, when I open terminal or console box and tries to use those
software, the system responds that "there is no emacs or gcc."
Why I cannot use those things?
Did I install the companion software wrong?
    I really don't understand why I can't use them.
For your reference, I saw the directories "/usr/bin" and "usr/ccs/bin"
    too.
    In /usr/bin I typed
    #as
    and no such command.
    In /usr/ccs/bin
    #as
    and also no such command
was what I had as a response.
If I installed the companion software CD correctly and if they are installed somewhere in my computer,
where I can find them and how I can use those softwares?
Lastly, whenever I try to connect to my ISP via telnet mode, I see this
    message.
    "Try to connect ...
connected to ***.***.***.*** (IP address of my ISP)
    Closed by foreign hosts."
Is there any one who knows why this happens?
    Thanks for reading my question.

gcc and emacs install in /opt/sfw. You should change your path statement to include /opt/sfw/bin and should obtain the FAQ from sunfreeware.com. The FAQ answers all your questions.
I have installed gcc and gtk and am using both at this time.

  • Converting mp4 for use in music editor

I want to mess around with Audacity, but I'm having trouble getting the right file formats. I ripped a cd to iTunes, and it appears to be in mp4 format. This doesn't seem to work with audacity.
How do I convert either to aac or to mp3? I've come across a "convert to aac" command, but the duplicate appeared as mp4.

Thanks. "Import" refers to the initial ripping of the CD, right?
Well... In the preferences settings it refers to the format that will be created when you either rip a track from a CD or when you convert a file using the Advanced > Convert menu feature.
How do I change format using my existing music files?
Personally I would re-rip the CD. When the files were converted to mp4 format there was quality loss. AIFF and WAV do not have any quality loss from the original.
(I assume I start by duplicating the file, if I want to keep a copy of the original.) Do I have to take it out of iTunes--say to the desktop-- then re-import it back in?
No and no. If you really want to just convert the mp4 first go into your preferences settings and change the Advanced > Importing format to AIFF or WAV (may have moved since I use an old version of iTunes). In iTunes select the mp4 file, then menu item Advanced > Convert To
A new file in the different format will be created.

  • Using FCPX as a music editor

Does anyone know if I can use FCPX to pull in an iTunes song and add beeps or similar for a workout track and share/export as an iTunes file again. Also looking to blend two songs together. Very basic stuff I know but free software is just useless.
    Thanks

    you can....
just go to that browser and start working ;-)
When you are done hit export and choose "add destination"
    like this:
    Chose WAVE for highest qual.

I just downloaded Massive the sound creation software for and I need to know how to export the sounds that I make so I can use them in Ableton Live or perhaps garageband, any ideas?

You should find it in Plug-In Devices on the left in Ableton & run in through there.

  • A text editor required

    Hi,
i am stuck in the failsafe mode or if i even try to login from the single user mode i need a text editor all the editors in solaris 10 are useless they are graphical but i am stuck in command line please guide me something simple such as vim in linux because vim in solaris has problem even with the back space and other keys it really is not a good option i was using gedit but now my computer has got a problem and i need command line.
i am a newbie to solaris and was using linux so it was much easier please help if you know how to get one good editor to work on command line.
    best regds
    ali

you can use delete in suns vi instead of backspace. Also just remember to hit esc before trying to move the cursor. Once you get on your feet check out pkg-get at either sunfreeware.org or blastwave.org. If you install the pkg-get utility you can grab apps like vim from the command line when you need them.

  • Not able to copy the tree node text in solaris, while easily done in window

    Hi,
I m not able to copy the text present on the tree's node to terminal or other text editor in solaris. I m using <Shift><control> C and V comaand for the same but the text is not being copied and pasted on the text pad or the terminal window.
While the same is possible in windows OS using ctrl+c and ctrl+v command.
Please suggest the possible solution for the same, is there any property of the tree/OS needs to be set?

Help About says I'm on 20.0.1
Up until last week, I was able to use the tab key when typing emails and other multi-line text boxes.
Suddenly the behavior of the tab key changed. This isn't the first time. It's been quite a while ago that the function of the tab key changed from indenting to moving around the page, then after some time it changed back to indenting.
Can we get this fixed and leave it alone, please?
I may give one of those add-ins a try, but my problem with add-ins is that they break when FF is patched or upgraded, then I'm left with out the solution they provide.
Can we just fix Firefox, please?
    Thanks,
    Frank
P.S. Another potential fix I came across suggested starting FF in safe mode to see if the problem goes away. It does not. It seems to be a change to FF that appeared after an update last week. On or just befor 24 Apr.

  • Level of music uneven in slideshow

I made a long slideshow in iPhoto 6. After putting it in iDVD6 and burning a disc one of the songs plays at a very low level. How do I fix?

Looks like some incremental success. Can I assume the audio is low when you preview in iPhoto? Easy solution (?) is to have someone boost the volume when that song plays...
In iTunes there is a Preference to even out the audio levels -- don't know if that will carry over thru iPhoto to iDVD. Only other solution that comes to mind is to export the song to, or open the song directly in, Garageband or a music editor that lets you adjust volumes.

Please see the man page of xview.
The parameter: text.tabWidth in the .Xdefaults file controls the tab width size.

  • How to put "flats" in sheet music

I am new to working with any sheet music and GB.  I am trying to take shhet music that has already been written, and put it into GB so I can play it.  What is stopping me is tha the sheet music is annotated with a number of "flats" prior to the time notation.  How do I get the "flats" (which I believe is called key notation) into the sheet music editor of GB?

GarageBand will add "flats" to the score automatically if you set the correct key for your project. To adjust individual notes hold down the "alt/option" key while moving the note up or down.

  • Gaps in music

Hi, I am having problems in that my music in itunes is fine but when transfered to my iphone some of the songs have gaps in the middle of the tracks, not all of them and its quite random. I have a new computer running windows 7 64bits could this be the cause and any advise?

if you are talking about playback, in iTunes preferences go to PLAYBACC>(Mac at least but I don't know why it would be different) >set CROSSFADE PLAYBACK all the way over to 12 and the songs will overlap...depending on the ending of one song and how the next begins. You of course can arrange tunes so that one will smoothly 'blend' into the next. That's wat I always try to do in my playlists.
When I was using a Dell I found the program ROXIO has an excellent music editor where you can make the next song fade or blend into the following track no matter how each song normally fades and starts. You control that. I can't find that for Mac yet.
    Hope this helps

  • Classical music editing (maybe a plugin?)

    Hello,
I am a classical musician who has used a variety of audio programs for professional editing for commercial CD release of recorded classical music, but for more general teaching needs, I've started using Logic (just downloaded Logic X, but still have Logic 9).
In this world, we look for an application that allows precision edits.  The work involves starting with a 3-4 hour multi-track recording session (this for about 10-15 minutes of music). During the session, every passage is played perfectly somewhere. As an editor, I string together regions chosen from around the session recording, with customizable crossfades. Logic can do all of this, but what I miss is the ability to do precision "nudging" of any and all region boundaries at any time.
The best such program for stereo only, 15 years ago, was called Sound Designer II, which worked on a playlist principle. Sound Designer was bought by Digidesign, who retired it when Mac moved from OS9 to OSX, forcing classical music editors to move to ProTools (or something else). One other program, a mastering program from TC Works, looked very much like SDII, and it lasted only a couple of years into the OSX time before it was dropped.  Other programs, each with their proponents, have come and gone.
What made Sound Designer and TC Works so wonderful was something we called a "nudge box."  I wonder if such a thing could be made as a plugin for Logic?  I know some classical editors who use Logic, but it has surprising limitations, which cost us a LOT of time.  For me the biggest thing: There is region boundary nudging, but only for the region ending, not the region beginning, nor for shared boundaries.  Region beginnings and shared boundaries can be adjusted only with mouse dragging. I hoped for an improvement in the new Logic release, but it didn't happen.  When I was a ProTools user, I could do all those kinds of nudges, but it was ungainly in other ways, and I HATED the proprietary plugins, the need constantly for a dongle, and the upgrades that made plugins and expensive hardware obsolete. I don't expect Avid to make things any better...
For the tracks being assembled (with all the carefully chosen regions), the nudge box in SDII and the TC Works program would show the wave for a region end (let's call it region A), a bar to represent the region end, a bar to represent the next region beginning (region B), a wave for the beginning and end of that region, a bar to represent Region B's end, a bar to represent the next region's beginning (C), and finally, the beginning of the wave for region C.
    Like this:
    A | | B | | C
Above were pre-roll and post-roll controls.  Below were two play buttons, one for A into B, one for B into C, according to pre-post roll amounts.  The boundary bars were selectable, individually or in groups.  There was a pair of nudge buttons (left/right) with a place to enter a nudge amount setting (in milliseconds).  Pressing the button would shorten or lengthen any region by the nudge amount according to which border bars were selected.  At each border bar pair, you could select a crossfade type (equal power, X, or any combination of fast/slow in with fast/slow out) and a cross fade length (again in milliseconds).  Finally, there was a button to advance through the regions, from ABC to BCD (then CDE, etc. to the end of the track).
With access to such a box -- and, of course, these all things that are controllable in Logic -- classical editors initially piece together a recording, but spend most of their time fine tuning the places where regions meet, with no need for mouse dragging.  In a typical 10-15 minute piece of music, there could be 50-100 regions, each ranging in length from a minute to less than a second.
There is no program I know of that has this kind of nudge box now.  Further, what never happened, to my knowledge, was applying this kind of interface to more than a stereo track.  In the old days, classical sessions were either recording to stereo (mixed down on the spot), or mixed down before editing. Now, typically, the final mix down happens during mastering, after the edits are done.
Is it possible for a plug in to replicate this kind of editing control in Logic Pro X, but for multiple tracks (say, applied to a track stack)?  If so, I know a LOT of people, including me, who would pay handsomely for it.  It would save us folks hours and hours of work on each project, providing an ideal workflow for this particular task.
If anyone knows a plugin writer who might be interested in corresponding further with me on this topic, please write to me at:
    [email protected]
If I am incorrect in anything I've said about Logic's capabilities, please let me know.  The program is deep and rich, and beyond classical music editing, I'm am very pleased with it, and just scratching the surface. In classical music editing, I can get it to do what I need it to do, but am unable to find a comfortable and efficient workflow.  I'd love some advice about this.
    Thank you very much,
    David Froom

Hi David, although I can't provide any solutions you're not already aware of, I was wondering if you have tried to use the Junction pointer to Roll edit outgoing- versus incoming-takes?
I've given up hope a long time ago for a stereo editor in Logic 'alla' this mastering program from TC Works. Instead of that I've adapted my workflow to suit Logic's edit capacities. And lets face it, even the clumsiest editor app outperforms razor blade/ scissor editing in now a days. I fully agree with what you are saying though! Having had my share of complex classical music editing of all sorts in Logic, withstanding scrutiny of even the most critical (british) producers, I can say that I can accomplish just about any classical music editing task in this very program. And about efficiency……..well, thats a different kind of story.
    Have a nice day!
