Serial ATA 150 or 300

According to tech spec of new iMac configuration(s) with Core 2 Duo CPU, as the storage is mentioned Serial ATA 7200-rpm hard drive.
What I'd like to know is:
does new iMac configurations support both Serial ATA 150 and 300 standards, or just Serial ATA 300?

According to their sales page (when you configure the system and click more information on the hard drives), it says "All iMac models include standard 3.5-inch Serial ATA hard drives with data transfers up to 150 megabytes per second".
So, that would mean that you would only see performance comparable to SATA-150 no matter which drive you use. So, if you use a drive rated at SATA-300, then it would just run at the lower SATA-150 rate when connected to the iMac.

I'm putting together a new system and was wondering if I should get 2 seagates with serial ata 150 w/ncq on a raid 0 setup? I've heard of some problem's with this type of setup with this board. Or should I just stick with serial ata drives? Is there a big difference between the 2? Performance wise?

I have read about 2 problems that some people are experiencing in their raid0 set-ups:
1. Large drives slowing performance.
2. Actual settingt them up. The most common error is that they neglect to hit F8 during windows instalation to install the external drivers.
However, from persoanl experience it was very easy to set up and works fine with the WD Raptors.

Can i Repace My Main hard Drive with Western Dig 750GB Serial ATA/300 Hard

i have a Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5. it has the origional 160 or 180 in there.
is this a good drive?

If you want to use the ATA 300 drive at full speed you'll need to buy an ATA 300 Card, otherwise it
will only run at 150Mbps. It will still work but the throughput will be half since the Original G5 ata
controllers are serial ata 1 intead of the lastest version 2.

According to the specs listed for Sonnet's Tempo Serial ATA controller card, it's compatible with the early PCI Macs - like the 8600, as well as newer G3s, G4s, etc. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 SATA controller card has gotten favorable feedback in the Forums. The 8600's PCI slots are probably PCI 2.0-compliant, whereas the G4 AGPs probably have PCI 2.1-compliant slots. Even though the FirmTek card specifies PCI 2.2-compliant slots, it's undoubtedly backward-compatible. If you just want to use larger IDE/EIDE drives in your 8600, the (now-discontinued) Acard Ultra ATA-66 PCI controller card is an inexpensive solution at $25. Unlike the Acard Ultra ATA-133 controller card, it has the 128 GB limit, so a 120 GB drive is the optimal choice for it. Newegg has a Seagate 120 GB ATA-100 (8 MB Cache) hard drive for $55. I've got (3) 8600/300s and they were one of Apple's better-designed towers, especially with the large cooling fan in the side panel. I installed a G3/266 MHz processor in one, along with a pair of 4 GB hard drives, an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, and FireWire and USB PCI cards. It runs so well and quietly, that I'm reluctant to part with it - in spite of the fact that I rarely use it anymore. Macbook Pro i5 Serial ATA Question

Please be kind, I am a Windows users that just purchased his first Mac, the new 15 pro. When looking at the system profiler, I see the following for my ATA controller:

I read a lot online about the Macbook Serial ATA "1.5Gb" problem. Is that what I am seeing here?

Although this Hitachi drive can use the 3.0 Gb/s interface, I think this drive is only 1.5 Gb/s. The key identifier is the trailing "A02" characters. If it ended in "300" it would be a 3 Gb/s drive.
** Maybe; but after perusing the Hitachi website, it looks to me like the key identifier of whether or not it is a 1.5 or 3.0 speed drive is the LETTER preceding the last two digits; i.e.; A00 = 1.5Gbps S00 = 3.0Gbps.
Although not documented in Apple's specs for the Macbook Pro, I am suspecting those who order the 500 GB drive may be receiving a 3.0 GB/s drive, at least if it's the 7200 rpm option. Anyone with that drive please post the model number.
It might be best to contact them before you order to confirm that the 7200rpm option is indeed a SATA II capable drive.
Just FWIW, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and the person there stated that the MBP's are SATA II capable but needs a SATA II enabled drive to take advantage of the 3.0Gbps interface / link speed.

G5 Serial ATA Jumper Pins?

My original Hard Drive that came with the computer has a connector on jumper pins. I Have changed the startup disk to a New hard drive in slot one. And I have put the original hard drive in slot 2. Am I suppose to move the jumper pins from the original hard drive to the new hard drive that is the boot-up disk.
And I thought Serial ATA was suppose to get rid of jumper pins

No you don't need to change the jumpers. Have you looked up the drive model on the vendor's site?
Jumpers can be used to enable/disable SSC, 3.0 Gbps (150 vs 300MB/sec), as well as power management. WDC's documentation has in the past been more confusing than anyone could dream up.
So while there is no "master/slave" jumper or SCSI ID, jumpers are back, and seem worse than ever (every vendor has different set of standards, features, and what/where jumpers function).

Whats up with the sata controller? It keeps giving me controller errors in the event viewer on win xp and freezes

I have the same 865PE Neo2 board and it has been confirmed that there is a serious compatiblity problem with Maxtor Serial-ATA HDD.
Have spent more than a week to troubleshoot while the MSI reps kept telling me there is no problem with the drive.
Just go to the BIOS site to download the latest version. Can anyone explain what is the different between Seagate SATA and Maxtor SATA since the compatiblity only comes from the Maxtor drive?

Changing the bios version or settings has no effect, the system will always hang in any games, If i run them off this drive.
Disconecting the Maxtor and Using an old fuijitsu 4 gig drive instead, i have no problems whatsoever.
If i boot off the fujitsu, then run the game from the sata drive, the game will crash out (half life, vice city etc), and I get a 'hardware error' message popup in XP.
Doing the same from windows2000, I get a message that says the drive has been disconnected improperly.
Otherwise, if I boot and run the game off the SATA drive, the system will just totally lock up and i have to press the reset switch.
I've pretty much had it with this board. Unless I can get a solution very soon Im taking it back and getting an ASUS instead.

Yes you board does support SATA II, though I doubt in real life if you would notice the difference in everyday operations. As for the Hard Drive the 16mb is the better one to go for as it gives you more onboard memory to use before you need to use the system memory. The WD is a good choice , Would shy away from Maxtor (New versions) at the moment as they seem to be having some issues with the nvidia chipset.
Also although you can use any SATA cable, WD also make a version that is more of a secure fit to the Hard Drive itself, I use them myself and in my opinion they are well worth the small extra cost. Just remember not to use any tight turns on SATA cables as that can lead to problems with it transmitting the data.

MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Serial ATA Drive

I've got a very strange problem....
Yesterday i have installed my new motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR) but i have a problem with the SATA feature.
I've got two drives : one 40GB ATA (Western Digital) and one 160GB SATA also from Western Digital.
My SATA drive is recognized by the FastTrak BIOS (v2) but i'm unable to reinstall Windows XP Professional (with SP2 Slipstreamed) because Windows Setup didn't recognize the SATA disk. I have loaded the Promise Serial ATA Drivers at the begin of the installation (F6)...
I have also tried 2 different versions of the Promise SATA Drivers; the one that cames with my motherboard CD, and the most recent from the MSI website. But with both drivers the same result. How can i get my Serial ATA Harddisk get work with this motherboard?
Any help will be appreciated.

My motherboard didn't came with a floppy (I have bought an bulk version..) I have created a SATA floppy by myself. (I have got the drivers from the motherboard cd..) These drivers are also good, right?
Which type of RAID Array should i create? Because i have only one SATA drive.....

Moving data from a dead G5 with serial ATA drives to a Mac Pro

I have a dead Power Mac dual 2.7 GHz G5. The red light on the edge of the mother board is on - and the machine does not start up. It has been dying slowly - the dual monitors turn off when I send an image to my printer.
It is under Apple Care - and today I purchased a Mac Pro quad 3.0 to replace it.
But - I need some files from the 2 drives in the dead dual 2.7 G5. They are 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives.
From what I read here I cannot simply put the drives into the new Mac Pro.
So - I think that I need a firewire enclosure for the 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives that will let me get out the data.
What is a good enclosure to do this - or is there another way? I can't send in the G5 for repair until I rescue the data from the drives and erase them.

Error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices.

There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices. I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this. I believe a secondary drive in bay 2 died.

I also have just began to hit this issue.
I have 4 2T enterprise class WD drives in a raid 1+0 (or was it 0+1) config.
Device Model: WDC WD2002FYPS-01U1B1
One disk (disk0 in bay 2) keeps disappearing. Completely. /dev/disk0 and /dev/rdisk0 vanish.
If I look at "about this mac" / "More Info" / "Serial-ATA" I get the "error while scanning ...".
If I reboot, the offending disc comes back and the raid volumes start rebuilding.
The SMART status is (reported to be) fine.
I use the 'smartmon' tools and look at the extended SMART status and the values of the counters all looks the same as the other drives. I can run an extended offline test, which takes forever to execute. disk 1 and 3 eventually finish with success (it writes this status into a SMART log area on the disc).
Disk 2 and 0 take longer. I image this is because 2 is being read to resilver 0. Currently, I am running with disk0 absent again, and disk 2s test did not complete. It claims it was aborted by the host, so I imagine the one on disk0 will claim the same after I reboot.
My system is under extended AppleCare until 16 Jan 2011, so if I can determine that this is a disc controller error, I can get it fixed. The drives have a 5 year warrantee, and are less than 1yr old, so they are covered. I just need to figure out what the issue is.
I will now reboot and recover disk0 and see if perhaps there is anything recorded in the SMART log.
There is nothing in kernel.log specific to disk0. I include the log extract here for posterity. The "speed" volume is not raid 0+1, just striped, which is why it gets aborted.

I have an external Serial ATA drive with a windows operating system connected to my macbook pro by a usb adapter. I'm trying to delete some files from the drive but it tells me it is read only. How do I change the sharing and permissions?

You can't write/make changes to an NTFS formatted drive using a Mac without third party software.

Can I install a serial ata solid state drive in my macbook pro

I some help. Have been using macbooks for a while now and usually would install a bigger hard drive myself just to get a little more room. I just ordered a 13.3 i5 macbook pro but it's coming with a 320 hd. I just saw that bestbuy has a serial ata 500gb ssd for $139 and I thinking about installing one of these in my mac when it arrives. I have not used an SSD before but from what I've read about it, it seems it'll be fun. What I need to know though is, will it work on this macbook and is it as easy to install as other hard drives?

2) it is "not" an SSD, it is a hybrid drive. Only 4GB is actually SSD, the rest is standard rotational hard drive.
You might get slightly better performance, but nothing close to an actual SSD.
Looking at the price and capacity you mentioned, I'm guessing your talking about Seagate's Momentus XT.

Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.
