Serial ATA Arrives At Last

Tom's Hardware has a review of Serial ATA.  Just thought everyone would like a first look into the new storage spec.
Back To The Future: Serial ATA Arrives At Last
Take Care,
Richard

Best advice in one word: WAIT.
These new technologies are only minor refreshes of current products. Waste of time and money if you buy the nforce 2 / serial ata unless you need the onboard video. As for sata, it is limited by PCI bus as Richard says, and also there is no such HD that can hold a 133 transfer rate and sata won't either. Picture it as ATA150 over ATA133, as you know (or not), ATA133 over ATA100 was hardly any performance increase due to HDs not even getting close to max yet alone holding an average throughput anywhere nears it. Unless you have the money. don't go selling your current nforce system for this stuff. You will find that it will be outdated very fast.
What about waiting JAG I know everything gets outdated eventually? Indeed it does, but these current nforce systems are good until at least 2003 so just hold out for awhile longer and see what happens. Update your video card to a gf4ti or nv30, especially if you want superior game performance. (at least it will be an upgrade worth it, think about it, will a nforce2 really help game performance? not really, a 1.5ghz proc or so will be good for another year, so keep your nforce and if needed get an external video card) The updating mobo/hd bandwagon is overhyped.  You'll be thanking me later.

  • Serial ATA vs. Ultra ATA/100

    Hi.
My Macbooks HD crashed last weekend (folder with questionmark, etc.) and I went online to find out what the reason is. After reading some discussion boards I decided to order a new one. So I did order a TravelStar 5K160. It arrived yesterday and when I tried to replace it, that the interfaces do not match. Looks like the new harddisk has a Serial ATA interface, where the old one had a Ultra ATA/100 (Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/11/fastandfurious/ My new one looks like the one on top, where the old one looks like the one below.)
Is there anything I can do to make the new one working or did I just really order the wrong HD???

Hi Coolcumber and welcome to Discussions,
the MacBooks have always had SATA as the connection interface for the internal HD.
Can it be that the new one is a IDE/PATA and not your old one ?
When the new HD is a SATA the it must fit into the MacBook.
If the new one is a IDE/PATA, then try to send it back and get the one with SATA.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices.

There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices. I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this. I believe a secondary drive in bay 2 died.

I also have just began to hit this issue.
I have 4 2T enterprise class WD drives in a raid 1+0 (or was it 0+1) config.
    Device Model: WDC WD2002FYPS-01U1B1
One disk (disk0 in bay 2) keeps disappearing. Completely. /dev/disk0 and /dev/rdisk0 vanish.
If I look at "about this mac" / "More Info" / "Serial-ATA" I get the "error while scanning ...".
If I reboot, the offending disc comes back and the raid volumes start rebuilding.
The SMART status is (reported to be) fine.
I use the 'smartmon' tools and look at the extended SMART status and the values of the counters all looks the same as the other drives. I can run an extended offline test, which takes forever to execute. disk 1 and 3 eventually finish with success (it writes this status into a SMART log area on the disc).
Disk 2 and 0 take longer. I image this is because 2 is being read to resilver 0. Currently, I am running with disk0 absent again, and disk 2s test did not complete. It claims it was aborted by the host, so I imagine the one on disk0 will claim the same after I reboot.
My system is under extended AppleCare until 16 Jan 2011, so if I can determine that this is a disc controller error, I can get it fixed. The drives have a 5 year warrantee, and are less than 1yr old, so they are covered. I just need to figure out what the issue is.
I will now reboot and recover disk0 and see if perhaps there is anything recorded in the SMART log.
There is nothing in kernel.log specific to disk0. I include the log extract here for posterity. The "speed" volume is not raid 0+1, just striped, which is why it gets aborted.

  • Can I install a serial ata solid state drive in my macbook pro

    Hi there,
I some help. Have been using macbooks for a while now and usually would install a bigger hard drive myself just to get a little more room. I just ordered a 13.3 i5 macbook pro but it's coming with a 320 hd. I just saw that bestbuy has a serial ata 500gb ssd for $139 and I thinking about installing one of these in my mac when it arrives. I have not used an SSD before but from what I've read about it, it seems it'll be fun. What I need to know though is, will it work on this macbook and is it as easy to install as other hard drives?

    1) it will work
    2) it is "not" an SSD, it is a hybrid drive.  Only 4GB is actually SSD, the rest is standard rotational hard drive.
You might get slightly better performance, but nothing close to an actual SSD.
Looking at the price and capacity you mentioned, I'm guessing your talking about Seagate's Momentus XT.

  • Macbook Pro i5 Serial ATA Question

Please be kind, I am a Windows users that just purchased his first Mac, the new 15 pro. When looking at the system profiler, I see the following for my ATA controller:
    Intel 5 Series Chipset:
    Vendor: Intel
    Product: 5 Series Chipset
    Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
    Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
    Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
I read a lot online about the Macbook Serial ATA "1.5Gb" problem. Is that what I am seeing here?

Although this Hitachi drive can use the 3.0 Gb/s interface, I think this drive is only 1.5 Gb/s. The key identifier is the trailing "A02" characters. If it ended in "300" it would be a 3 Gb/s drive.
** Maybe; but after perusing the Hitachi website, it looks to me like the key identifier of whether or not it is a 1.5 or 3.0 speed drive is the LETTER preceding the last two digits; i.e.; A00 = 1.5Gbps S00 = 3.0Gbps.
Although not documented in Apple's specs for the Macbook Pro, I am suspecting those who order the 500 GB drive may be receiving a 3.0 GB/s drive, at least if it's the 7200 rpm option. Anyone with that drive please post the model number.
It might be best to contact them before you order to confirm that the 7200rpm option is indeed a SATA II capable drive.
Just FWIW, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and the person there stated that the MBP's are SATA II capable but needs a SATA II enabled drive to take advantage of the 3.0Gbps interface / link speed.

  • ? on K8T-Neo's factory Serial ATA cables

The orange Serial ATA cables that come with the MSI K8T Neo motherboard - are those male or female connectors?
Also, I noticed that the cables are almost 2 feet long. Does anyone know where I can get shorter Serial ATA cables?
    Any information is appreciated! :-)
[Countdown to HyperX memory arriving in the mail: 3 days!]

...it doesn't matter which end you plug into the HDD or the mobo...I guess you would call them male...check online vendors for shorter ones...different colors...fluorescent ones...etc...

You may find that the contents of the IDE folder are too big to fit on a floppy. If so, that's because it has the raid tool files, which you do not need on the floppy. I haven't checked this version but that's what happened with the last version. The files you do not need on the floppy include nvraidman,.exe, nvraidservice.exe, nvraidwizard.dll and nvraidwizardenu.dll. There are a couple more but it's only bigger ones you need to remove in order to fit the rest on a floppy.
As long as you omit the Raidtool directory, the rest of the files only come to 783K between them.

  • Serial ATA troubles

I am having trouble getting my XP install to see my Serial ATA HDD...?  Help please

You're posting in the incorrect forum this is the via 32bit forum you should be posting in this forum.
I can still give you a hand though firstly forget about the via drivers you need these drivers you have a promise sata raid controller on your board. Secondly make sure that it's enabled in the bios, and lastly right after the post screen(i.e. the memory & cpu speed screen) there should be a prompt for the promise raid controller that should show the drive then a key to press to enter the utility once inside that you need to figure out how to create a raid array choose raid 0 or performance setting.

  • Linux and serial ata

Hey. I just got a msi kt4 ultra-bsr. I went to install mandrake 9 last night and i couldnt find a driver for my serial ata raid controller. If anyone knows if promise or msi are coming out with a driver plz link me =)

You need to figure out which drives you'll be transferring data between and avoid a setup where you're sharing a channel. If you've got a large mpeg file in a temp folder, create the new divx, avi or whatever on a different drive and on a different channel.
I'm not familiar with your editing patterns but I would suggest the following:
Move the IDE drive to IDE1(master). This will probably require a reinstall of Windows since the Promise SATA driver is no longer used.
    Put the DVDRW on IDE2(master)
    Put the DVDROM on IDE2(slave)
If you need to be able to copy from DVD to DVD "on the fly", you'll probably have to put the DVDRom on IDE1 but this may affect your hdd performance.
After above is up and running, attach and install the SATA drives to Serial3&4, enable the Promise in Bios "As Raid" and follow instructions as per the Raid Guide.
Hopefully, this should give you the best use of data bandwidth. Be sure to keep everything defragged regularly.

  • Installation of the LG GGC-H20L serial ATA BlueRay/HD DVD drive

I have a quad PowerMac G5 one of the last ones before the intel Pro version, I would like to install the new LG BlueRay/HD DVD drive in place of the superdrive. Will this work, the new drive is serial ATA, is I can't tell what the superdrive connection is from the spec sheet so I guess I will have to dive into the case and take a look.
LG says it will work with as OS as long as I have a serial ATA connection I should be good to go, I won't be able to use Light scribe though.
Has anyone tried this any assistance will be much appreciated.
    http://us.lge.com/products/model/detail/computer%20productsoptical%20drives_optical%20drivesGGC-H20L.jhtml

All drives in the very near future as in the next couple of months are going to all be Sata, Currently most drives I have tested Lite-On LG can work externally on any 5.25" box that has a USB 2.0 connection. Currently I have 3 running off a Mac Mini, no sweat. As for the MacTower Pro it has 2-4 additional Sata connectors on the mother board and a converter for the current power connector can be purchased at almost any PC shop. As for the G5 needing a Sata Card I recommend using FirmTek Seritek PCI-x cards that have internal and external 2-4 ports. They are relatively inexpensive and do not need any drivers. Ordering a H20L for my MacMini media center on Monday.

  • KT4 Ultra and new Serial ATA drive

    Hi there
I've got a WinXP machine with a KT4 ultra, 2 regular IDE hard drives, a CD write and DVD (all working fine).
Yesterday I bought a Serial ATA DiamondMax Plus9 160Gb to use as a 3rd drive. I don't want it to use RAID, I just want it as an additional drive available to windows.
I fitted the drive last night, but when the BIOS runs through the drives at the start it didn't show up. I did however get the RAID utility come up on the screen, and by pressing Ctrl-F it allowed me to create a RAID array (which I didn't).
When I got into windows the drive couldn't be seen, running Maxblaster found a SCSI drive but thought it was 0 bytes capacity.
Can anyone tell me if what I want to do is even possible?
And if so, how do it do it?
    Thanks in advance
    Rich

Hi Sharp, thanks for the info.
I have the promise drivers installed, so there really shouldn't be a problem there.
Having scanned through a load of other messages on here, updating the BIOS has been recommended.
I was a bit wary of doing this as I have a history of messing up machines, what are other's experiences with upgrading the BIOS?
    Thanks again

  • Solid state drive vs a serial ATA drive?

What is the difference between a solid state drive and a Serial ATA drive in the MacBook Pro's?  And why would I choose one over the other?

If your going to go SSD you need to go large as you can get, like 750GB or more and it's going to cost plenty.
SSD's are shock resistant as they have no moving parts, should last longer and cause less problems that hard drives, but they can wear out faster than hard drives if your moving around a lot of data.
Drawback to SSD's is you can't securely erase them, and with their "wear leveling" placing your data on the least used cells, you basically have to enable Filevault 2 to encrypt the whole thing all the time to protect your data, this results in a performance loss a bit as your CPU has to encrypt and decrypt everything on the fly before using it.
A skilled person can break the password, or you have to provide it to Apple for repair purposes or Customs officials/law when ordered by the courts. There are devices for iPhones, iPods, iPads and even GPS that can image the whole SSD in mere minutes and gleam the password, apparently in cooperation with these major companies like Apple. So it's safe to assume the newer SSD on the closed boxe MBP-Retina's will also be accessible this way via the Thunderbolt port.
So if you want the option to "scrub" your boot drive, then your going to want to go with a SATA hard drive and not a SSD. Also you want a MBP other than the MacBook Pro-Retina, so that you can open the machine and remove the internal storage for destruction.
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • KT6 Delta-FIS2R Serial ATA Question

I have 2 maxtor 80gb serial ATA drives on order, should be here anyday now.  Can't wait!!
Now with the KT6 Delta-FIS2R am i right in thinking it has 2 serial ata controller cards (via & promise?) each supporting 2 drives.
Which controller do you recommend i plug my drives into?  I intend making a 160gb JBOD stripe set with the 2 disks.  Is there much difference between the two?
With the via it appears you can make/delete the raid config thru the bios.  Do you have to ctrl-? to get into the promise to do the same?
Apologies for my lack of understanding but i haven't really played with the MB much as i'm waiting for the drives to arrive.
Also, what is the recommended stripe size?  the book says 64k, is this correct in practice?  I will be making a 20gb system partition and the remaing 140gb for data and the pc will just be for general use (downloaded files, re-encoding dvds, maybe the odd game)
    bios updates?
What is the recommended patch levels for the motherboard and both serial-ata controllers?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Zarch

Yup, seen the perf. figures... System does seem really fast, but when you're coming from a PIII with 5400rpm and 512k cache, anything is fast   Got to remember benchmarks are just that and real performance lies somewhere between 0 and benchmarks...
For setup, I think I've seen mention that you should build the SATA array as the only HDD in the system as a first off otherwise the OS tries to install to the IDE drive. Haven't tried this, but just to let you know.
Also, you have to create the RAID array in the BIOS and also set the array to be a boot device in the BIOS. Without doing this the OS doesn't appear to install correctly (and you certainly won't be able to boot it!!).
I don't think there is any performance degredation to splitting the disk into two except if one of the partitions becomes full. When it gets full, it is much more difficult to defrag the drive (and seek time is what ruins disk performance). I've found that you need 20-30% free to be able to sensibly defrag drives (with large files on there). If you believe you'll only ever use 12-15GB for your system, then fire away - but bear in mind I've used that in the first 4 weeks with my system (without the video files...). Games can be a few hundreds of MB each so they soon mount up if you are not careful...
Just have fun and enjoy a really fast system and dont forget a separate backup HDD (or get another 2 SATA drives and run a RAID 0+1 off the Promise controller...) - and not one of the partitions!!

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Serial ATA Drive

I've got a very strange problem....
Yesterday i have installed my new motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR) but i have a problem with the SATA feature.
I've got two drives : one 40GB ATA (Western Digital) and one 160GB SATA also from Western Digital.
My SATA drive is recognized by the FastTrak BIOS (v2) but i'm unable to reinstall Windows XP Professional (with SP2 Slipstreamed) because Windows Setup didn't recognize the SATA disk. I have loaded the Promise Serial ATA Drivers at the begin of the installation (F6)...
I have also tried 2 different versions of the Promise SATA Drivers; the one that cames with my motherboard CD, and the most recent from the MSI website. But with both drivers the same result. How can i get my Serial ATA Harddisk get work with this motherboard?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Computerfreakje.
PS : My specifications are the following:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR (Rev. 7.4)
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    2x 256MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb (R360)
    Western Digital 40GB ATA
    Western Digital 160GB SATA

    Thanks for your reply Richard,
My motherboard didn't came with a floppy (I have bought an bulk version..) I have created a SATA floppy by myself. (I have got the drivers from the motherboard cd..) These drivers are also good, right?
Which type of RAID Array should i create? Because i have only one SATA drive.....
I think the "auto" feature is the easiest way?
    Thanks.
