Serial ata no device reported

Hi,
I have the K8T Neo FIS2R board with AMD64 3000+.  I have one Maxtor SATA hard drive.  I am using the promise378 driver and the drive is connected to SER1 connector on the board.  There are no other hard drives.  I have a CDROM and a Combo connected to the Master Primary and Secondary.
When booting up, the system reports the drive as Ultra DMA and reports "no device" for Serial_Ch0 and Ch1 Master.  In WindowsXP, the device manager reports the drive as SCSI and the controller as Promise.
I ran MSI Live update and flashed the bios.  After reboot, the system reported bad CMOS settings so I used the 3-1/2 bios recover disk.  I'm not getting the message on the boot screen anymore but in setup, under integrated peripherals, it shows VT8237 SATA and RAID controller enabled, not the Promise 378.
Why is the boot screen showing no device for my SATA drive and what happened to the CMOS setting for the Promise controller?

Hi
DON'T us e the promise controller - Big Trouble- wait for promise to provide one that works. The only reason your maxtor works at all, is the fact the VIA driver is installed.
Best to disable the promise drivers by going to PCI controller in Bios (integrated peripherals) and there are 3 settings RAID, SATA, DISABLE. Use disable. Leave the VIA drivers enabled. The Device Manager shows the SATA under SCSI. All the drivers are on the floppies that come with MOBO, are also on CD.
Try reloading the VIA drivers by updating driver in SCSI device manager, and then forcing XP to use the VIA drivers on floppy.

  • Error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices.

There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices. I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this. I believe a secondary drive in bay 2 died.

I also have just began to hit this issue.
I have 4 2T enterprise class WD drives in a raid 1+0 (or was it 0+1) config.
    Device Model: WDC WD2002FYPS-01U1B1
One disk (disk0 in bay 2) keeps disappearing. Completely. /dev/disk0 and /dev/rdisk0 vanish.
If I look at "about this mac" / "More Info" / "Serial-ATA" I get the "error while scanning ...".
If I reboot, the offending disc comes back and the raid volumes start rebuilding.
The SMART status is (reported to be) fine.
I use the 'smartmon' tools and look at the extended SMART status and the values of the counters all looks the same as the other drives. I can run an extended offline test, which takes forever to execute. disk 1 and 3 eventually finish with success (it writes this status into a SMART log area on the disc).
Disk 2 and 0 take longer. I image this is because 2 is being read to resilver 0. Currently, I am running with disk0 absent again, and disk 2s test did not complete. It claims it was aborted by the host, so I imagine the one on disk0 will claim the same after I reboot.
My system is under extended AppleCare until 16 Jan 2011, so if I can determine that this is a disc controller error, I can get it fixed. The drives have a 5 year warrantee, and are less than 1yr old, so they are covered. I just need to figure out what the issue is.
I will now reboot and recover disk0 and see if perhaps there is anything recorded in the SMART log.
There is nothing in kernel.log specific to disk0. I include the log extract here for posterity. The "speed" volume is not raid 0+1, just striped, which is why it gets aborted.

    Hello Nadiya,
    Welcome to the forums
I understand you are looking for a usage report. The printer will print a test page and you can see the page count on that page, along with the printer information, such as your serial number, etc. If there is anything else you may mean by "usage" please let me know and I will do my best to help.

in safe mode works perfectly, soon as I try to boot in normal mode it's keep restarting.on screen I don't  see any line vertical or horizontal picture look normal on safe mode.but unable to start normal it just restarting over and over.I try another HDD but same things happen,I replace memory but still same.works ok in safe mode but not in normal mode.I will try to post system error report.

  • "lost" my iPad.  Will the GPS still work after battery dies?  Also, how can I get the serial number for police report?

Please help!  I "lost" my iPad at a local store.  The GPS on my phone shows the iPad is still in the store (over 24 hours.)  I've searched every square inch of the store and cannot find it.  I fear it may have been "stashed" by an employee.  The police need a serial number for a report.  How do I get that?  Will I still be able to locate it via GPS after the battery dies?

Did you register it with Apple? If not, you would have had to write it down. Once the device goes out of wifi or if the thief turns wifi off...its gone. All they have to do is restore it as new, you wont be able to detect it again. Sounds bleak I know but its hard to get it back once its gone...no matter what Apple says.
I really hope it turns up...I hate thiefs. Best of luck.

  • Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board~ Is it worth it???

I was considering installing a Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board to run my ultra ATA devices.
Is it worth the trouble or would it bog my system down for a small increase in transfer rate????
    Thanks
    DD

I've got two IDE hard drives that have the converter board that plugs into SATA on my mobo. I didn't see that much of a performance gain until I went to RAID. I had IDE RAID and it worked alright. When I put the adapters on, the speed increased by at least double. I would say this is due to a more refined RAID controller, though, but it definately wouldn't hurt your performance any.

  • Serial ATA or ATA?

Is it better to have Serial ATA or ATA harddrives?  How many Serial ATA harddrives can you hook up to  K8N Neo Platinum motherboard?  I also do not want to use RAID either.

The performance difference at this time is negligable, except when considering the WD Raptor SATA drives vs. the normal 7200 RPM PATA drives.  The only thing to remember about using the onboard SATA is that the bottom 2 connections on the MB (SATA 1 & 2) don't work well with overclocking the motherboard.  SATA 3 & 4 are what you want to use if overclocking the board beyond 225mhz, but this does limit the total number of SATA devices you can use.

  • Macbook (black) first edition hangs when trying to read Serial-ATA

My Macbook recently died on me. In thinking it was my hard disc I have installed a new one. It did find it briefly when trying to install Snow Leopard again this failed since it could not communicate with the hard disc. Now I am stuck, using the System Profiler it just hangs when trying to read the Serial-ATA device tree.
Any idea of what is wrong and if it is worth repairing it?
    with kind regards,
    Christian

Turns out that the brand new Seagate that I got was faulty. Have now installed yet another drive and this seems to have done the trick.

  • How to install a Serial ATA Drive?

Hello, I just purchased a Barracuda Serial ATA drive and I just found out that these aren't installed as P ATA drives.
I've tried several combinations on my award BIOS and still I have absolutlly no sign of the SATA drive's presence.
This was the  Beginning of the discussion.
I have no ideia what to do. I've heard of the F6 tecnique but I don't no have a disk drive nor am I installing windows XP. I believe that my controler is called ICH5 or 82801EB since these where the types of refence I've heard before and I checked my devices on Device Manager.
    P.S I'm using windows XP

You don't need to install drivers.
In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
If this doesn't let you boot, change to
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
After making/saving these changes you should go back into the bios on the first reboot and make sure the right boot drive is selected.

  • Solid state drive vs a serial ATA drive?

What is the difference between a solid state drive and a Serial ATA drive in the MacBook Pro's?  And why would I choose one over the other?

If your going to go SSD you need to go large as you can get, like 750GB or more and it's going to cost plenty.
SSD's are shock resistant as they have no moving parts, should last longer and cause less problems that hard drives, but they can wear out faster than hard drives if your moving around a lot of data.
Drawback to SSD's is you can't securely erase them, and with their "wear leveling" placing your data on the least used cells, you basically have to enable Filevault 2 to encrypt the whole thing all the time to protect your data, this results in a performance loss a bit as your CPU has to encrypt and decrypt everything on the fly before using it.
A skilled person can break the password, or you have to provide it to Apple for repair purposes or Customs officials/law when ordered by the courts. There are devices for iPhones, iPods, iPads and even GPS that can image the whole SSD in mere minutes and gleam the password, apparently in cooperation with these major companies like Apple. So it's safe to assume the newer SSD on the closed boxe MBP-Retina's will also be accessible this way via the Thunderbolt port.
So if you want the option to "scrub" your boot drive, then your going to want to go with a SATA hard drive and not a SSD. Also you want a MBP other than the MacBook Pro-Retina, so that you can open the machine and remove the internal storage for destruction.
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • KT6 Delta-FIS2R Serial ATA Question

I have 2 maxtor 80gb serial ATA drives on order, should be here anyday now.  Can't wait!!
Now with the KT6 Delta-FIS2R am i right in thinking it has 2 serial ata controller cards (via & promise?) each supporting 2 drives.
Which controller do you recommend i plug my drives into?  I intend making a 160gb JBOD stripe set with the 2 disks.  Is there much difference between the two?
With the via it appears you can make/delete the raid config thru the bios.  Do you have to ctrl-? to get into the promise to do the same?
Apologies for my lack of understanding but i haven't really played with the MB much as i'm waiting for the drives to arrive.
Also, what is the recommended stripe size?  the book says 64k, is this correct in practice?  I will be making a 20gb system partition and the remaing 140gb for data and the pc will just be for general use (downloaded files, re-encoding dvds, maybe the odd game)
    bios updates?
What is the recommended patch levels for the motherboard and both serial-ata controllers?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Zarch

Yup, seen the perf. figures... System does seem really fast, but when you're coming from a PIII with 5400rpm and 512k cache, anything is fast   Got to remember benchmarks are just that and real performance lies somewhere between 0 and benchmarks...
For setup, I think I've seen mention that you should build the SATA array as the only HDD in the system as a first off otherwise the OS tries to install to the IDE drive. Haven't tried this, but just to let you know.
Also, you have to create the RAID array in the BIOS and also set the array to be a boot device in the BIOS. Without doing this the OS doesn't appear to install correctly (and you certainly won't be able to boot it!!).
I don't think there is any performance degredation to splitting the disk into two except if one of the partitions becomes full. When it gets full, it is much more difficult to defrag the drive (and seek time is what ruins disk performance). I've found that you need 20-30% free to be able to sensibly defrag drives (with large files on there). If you believe you'll only ever use 12-15GB for your system, then fire away - but bear in mind I've used that in the first 4 weeks with my system (without the video files...). Games can be a few hundreds of MB each so they soon mount up if you are not careful...
Just have fun and enjoy a really fast system and dont forget a separate backup HDD (or get another 2 SATA drives and run a RAID 0+1 off the Promise controller...) - and not one of the partitions!!

  • K7N2 Delta serial ata help

i just bought this boredthe toher day and i have one serial ata drive and one 80 gig ide drive.
what i want to do it make the serial ata be my main hardrive for the operating system and a few high end programs and i wanna use the 80 gig as just a hd for space to store miscellanious data.
but i can seem to find a way to make the serial ata drive just a hard dive by itself with defining an array.
    any help me out

Try on Nvidia/SocketA  - it's just below this one
From what I know is that if you have only a SATA drive than seting the array automatically sometimes does not work so you have to set it manually - define a new array, chose the 16kb stripe block.
I guess your SATA drive is new i.e. no data on it - you need a win98 floppy disk, leave connected only the SATA drive, boot from the floppy, use the cmd FDISK to create a partition on the SATA drive, activate it, use the cmd SYS C: to make it bootable. Restart, go back at the array setup, see if it is written at the Status *Bootable. If yes, go in Bios Setup, and select 1st Boot Device as BBS-0 if is available, if not your array is not well defined. That's it. Now you can setup your OS on the SATA drive - with Win98 is easy installing the driver for the SATA, but with WinXP you need to press F6 when it ask you to press to install 3rd party SCSI and RAID Controllers, and then point to the floppy with the SATA driver that you get with the mobo.
If I know more details I could help you more. At least I tryed.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Serial ATA Drive

I've got a very strange problem....
Yesterday i have installed my new motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR) but i have a problem with the SATA feature.
I've got two drives : one 40GB ATA (Western Digital) and one 160GB SATA also from Western Digital.
My SATA drive is recognized by the FastTrak BIOS (v2) but i'm unable to reinstall Windows XP Professional (with SP2 Slipstreamed) because Windows Setup didn't recognize the SATA disk. I have loaded the Promise Serial ATA Drivers at the begin of the installation (F6)...
I have also tried 2 different versions of the Promise SATA Drivers; the one that cames with my motherboard CD, and the most recent from the MSI website. But with both drivers the same result. How can i get my Serial ATA Harddisk get work with this motherboard?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Computerfreakje.
PS : My specifications are the following:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR (Rev. 7.4)
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    2x 256MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb (R360)
    Western Digital 40GB ATA
    Western Digital 160GB SATA

    Thanks for your reply Richard,
My motherboard didn't came with a floppy (I have bought an bulk version..) I have created a SATA floppy by myself. (I have got the drivers from the motherboard cd..) These drivers are also good, right?
Which type of RAID Array should i create? Because i have only one SATA drive.....
I think the "auto" feature is the easiest way?

  • Moving data from a dead G5 with serial ATA drives to a Mac Pro

I have a dead Power Mac dual 2.7 GHz G5. The red light on the edge of the mother board is on - and the machine does not start up. It has been dying slowly - the dual monitors turn off when I send an image to my printer.
It is under Apple Care - and today I purchased a Mac Pro quad 3.0 to replace it.
But - I need some files from the 2 drives in the dead dual 2.7 G5. They are 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives.
From what I read here I cannot simply put the drives into the new Mac Pro.
So - I think that I need a firewire enclosure for the 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives that will let me get out the data.
What is a good enclosure to do this - or is there another way? I can't send in the G5 for repair until I rescue the data from the drives and erase them.
    Dual 2.7 G5, 2 intel iMacs, 1 MacBook, 1 Powerbook, 18 G4 Macs, 3 iPods   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   I teach Digital Photography clases - on Macs

You can install them - you just won't be able to boot
    from them.
Don't move programs over - you should re-install them
    instead.
That would be great. I don't need to boot from them - I just need to rescue some files.
Can I erase them from the Mac pro before I send the G5 off for service?
