Serial ATA vs. Ultra ATA/100

Hi.
My Macbooks HD crashed last weekend (folder with questionmark, etc.) and I went online to find out what the reason is. After reading some discussion boards I decided to order a new one. So I did order a TravelStar 5K160. It arrived yesterday and when I tried to replace it, that the interfaces do not match. Looks like the new harddisk has a Serial ATA interface, where the old one had a Ultra ATA/100 (Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/11/fastandfurious/ My new one looks like the one on top, where the old one looks like the one below.)
Is there anything I can do to make the new one working or did I just really order the wrong HD???

Hi Coolcumber and welcome to Discussions,
the MacBooks have always had SATA as the connection interface for the internal HD.
Can it be that the new one is a IDE/PATA and not your old one ?
When the new HD is a SATA the it must fit into the MacBook.
If the new one is a IDE/PATA, then try to send it back and get the one with SATA.

  • ATA and Ultra ATA

    Is there aa difference between the ATA hardrive in the iBook and the Ultra ATA in the PowerBooks? I want to buy a new harddrive, but everywhere I go I only find ATA drives. What is the difference if any?

    Don't worry about the terms. You just need any 2.5" ATA drive but not a Serial ATA (SATA) drive (these are for the very latest laptops). A rough history goes something like this:
    ATA = 8Mbps?
    ATA2 = 16.6Mbps
    Ultra ATA/ATA33/Ultra DMA = 33.3Mbps
    ATA66/UltraDMA 66 = 66Mbps
    ATA100 = 100Mbps
    ATA133 = 133Mbps
    SATA = 150Mbps
    SATA2 =300Mbps
    If I've made a mistake I'd be grateful if one corrects me!
    If you buy a modern ATA133 device it will be compatible any ATA device (not SATA). It will slow automatically. I think the original iBooks were ATA33 and the Ti Powerbooks ATA100, but I can't find much info about this from Apple.

  • Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board~ Is it worth it???

    I was considering installing a Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board to run my ultra ATA devices.
    Is it worth the trouble or would it bog my system down for a small increase in transfer rate????
    Thanks
    DD

    I've got two IDE hard drives that have the converter board that plugs into SATA on my mobo. I didn't see that much of a performance gain until I went to RAID. I had IDE RAID and it worked alright. When I put the adapters on, the speed increased by at least double. I would say this is due to a more refined RAID controller, though, but it definately wouldn't hurt your performance any.

  • Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA Storage controller?

    Reworded
    Bought a new HD. Seagate 80 Gb SATA.
    Installed OK Setup Bios OK
    Copied OS to new Drive OK
    Selected new drive to boot to OK
    Started windows and new hardware found. Not OK
    The hardware found was "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".
    Driver found in WinNt / inf folder
    Comes up with an installation error everytime  "Data Invalid".
    It seems to running on a std IDE controller, however I get the new hardware message everytime I boot.
    Feels like something set in bios is not recognised by OS or driver is corrupt.
    Any clues
    Thanks in advance
    Geoff

    Thanks for that
    Checked everything as suggested on the doco. I cannot see anything obvious. I would appear that windows see's it as a SERIAL ATA controller. However, I cannot find anything on Intel's site that refers to a "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".

  • IDE...ATA...Serial ATA...Ultra ATA.....Mega ATA .... YIKES!!

    IDE...ATA... Serial ATA... Ultra ATA..... Mega ATA .... YIKES !!!!
    Which one do I need for my Tibook DVI ?
    I gotta order something quick to save my (computing) existence and am not seeing consistently the same terminology in ads. Some say one, some say t'other.
    For instance, I get that a lot of people are happy with the Toshiba 7K60 unit and on the Tosh. site it says "ATA-6 hard disk drive".
    But I can get a great price on the Toshiba 7K100 - which ostensibly would seem to be a beefier choice - and on the same site it says " Supports both Parallel & Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s interfaces"
    Is this one and the same thing ?
    What do I have to stay away from ?
    Many thanks and à bientôt !

    As far as I can see the difference between those drives is slim 12.5mm or ultra slim 9.5mm height. (Are you sure there not Hitachi?) I'm 95% sure the TiBooks will take the 12.5mm drives.I recommend looking in Apple System Profile to see exactly what model you currently have installed and then find one with the same dimensions.

  • Difference between ULTRA ATA and SERIAL ATA

    Hello,
    What is the difference between ULTRA ATA and SERIAL ATA ?? Is the connector different for each type ?? Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

    Was wondering why you are considering a ATA drive? The iMac G5 als has a serial ata drive already.
    If you are considering an external drive, then you have a problem. The most important thing there is that you get a drive with firewire interface because I think they are the fastest, but USB is an ok choice. If there is an external firewire drive that also uses a serial ATA drive inside of it, then that would be an excellent choice for speed. USB or Firewire are standards for connecting a peripherial to you Mac. An external drive will probably have a very common, read Mactor, WD, Seagate, ATA drive in it. The external drive case has a interface inside of it which allows USB or Firewire to speak with the ATA drive, any flavor. Some people just purchase a powered external 3 1/2 case and install the hd they like the best, that is the nice thing about standards.
    I think serial ATA will pretty much spell the end of all of the older ATA drives. The serial drives are actually very competitive in price now and faster.
    Suggest you go to Western Digital, Maxtor, and/or Seagate's web sites to learn what drives they offer.

  • Will a HDD Ultra ATA 100 work in a MacBook?

    I'm planning to replace the HDD with a 120 GB. The one I like is the Western Digital WD1200VE 5400 8MB Ultra ATA. Now I'm not sure will it work? Is Ultra ATA compatible to S-ATA?

    No… you need an SATA version of the drive.

  • Ultra ata not compatable

    I have a Seagate ultra ata 750 gigger, but it has the "old style" pin connectors, for power and data, is there any way to use this in G5 Dual 1.8, early model??
    It came with a cable which seems to connect to the g5's "newer" data connector, but how the heck do i power it up???

    Hi frank jones1;
    I understand what you would like to do but there is no simple way to put a parallel ATA into a serial ATA bus. So I have to agreed with Frank's suggestion to put it into an external enclosure.

  • We have 2 XServe Raid 14x750GB Ultra ATA and rack cabinet, xserve and fiber to donate to anyone who can pick it up (chicago)

    Our Studio is holding onto a full rack cabinet, 2 XSERVE Raid 14x750GB Ultra ATA units, Exabyte Tape Back up system (with 750GB tapes) and Xserve all purchased directly from Apple and only used as our video backup system.  It's a bit dusty from being out of use, but in excellent condition.
    Studio is in Chicago.  If you can come and get it, it's yours.
    We also have some hot spare parts that came with the purchase.

    I'd love to but need whoever wants it to come and pick up (Third Floor Studio ) The Rack, can of course be emptied, but those muther's are heavy    Not sure it would be worth you paying moving guys to deal with?

  • Ultra ATA hard drives???

    So i have a 120gb Ultra ATA hard drive so i bought a casing to make it an external HD but it would not show up in disk utility or my desktop. So i took a regular ATA HD and it worked fine. my question is does apple not support Ultra ATA or is there somthing else i need to do to get it show up?

    What are the manufacturer's recommended jumper settings for the drive when installed in an enclosure?
    It should work as long as the drive settings are correct and the enclosure is getting enough juice - either through the ports or a power adapter.

  • Ultra ATA Hard Drive

    I bought a Ultra ATA Hard Drive for my Mac and the connections are different. I looked up online that you can buy an adapter to switch it over to a Mac compatible connection. Will this work fine and be just as good as if it was normally this connection? Thank you very much.

    ... or go out and now buy FW case - you still need backups - and make sure to get an SATA drive, one that doesn't have Spread Spectrum Clocking enabled (such as Seagate 7200.9) when looking.
    Maxtor DM10 or MaxLine III; Hitachi T7K250 or 7K500; WD Raptor.
    I think there was something about the WD400 mentioned on
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com - check their drive upgrade database whenever considering a new drive and see what others have done/learned.

  • Ultra ATA in IDE 3 spot work?

    Hi I want to use the ultra ata in ide 3 but it never recognizes it.....what can I do to make sure it does. I have two drives connected master and slave to the ide.

    Hi
    Is Bios set up correctly, I think IDE3 is controlled by the Promise controller that runs SER1 &2, it is in Intergrated peripherals- onboard PCI controller - P20378 - set it to Raid or SATA, whichever you use.
    What other IDE drives have you on IDE1 and IDE2?
    Are the PATA and SATA controllers enabled?
    Does the Promise post page show your HDD?
    Is there any sign of it in 'MY Computer'- Search - Disk management.?
    Cheers

  • 750 GB Ultra ATA Drives available now!

    Looks like they finally got the 750GB drives worked into the XServe RAID. If you go to the configuration page @ the store you can now order with 750GB modules for a grand total of 10.5TB! This looks to be good for all those who have been asking about the usage of 750GB drives. Not sure if it requires a update to the RAID since there seems to be nothing noted on the support page or in available downloads but that should come soon if there is.
    Note that it has stayed the same - they are Ultra ATA modules not SATA as some of you keep asking about. SATA is rumored on some pages for the next major hardware update though. You can find info at the various rumor sites.

    As mentioned in another thread the update appears to remove LUN masking support.
    The official doc is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304884
    Upgrade cautiously if you use LUN masking in your set-up. I'm going to contact my Apple rep for official comment and if I hear anything of substance I will post it.

  • Serial ata 133 vs ata 66 vs lacie firewire external d2 drive speed issues

    I have an older power mac tower that has built in ata 66. I have a large music collection (300 gigs) that resides in a lacie firewire (D2) external drive. When I make a play list, itunes makes me wait about 20 seconds to create the playlist which drives me crazy (spinning beachball). I also use the computer for logic pro.
    I want to increase the internal capacity of this computer. I am wondering....is the external firewire drive faster than what an ata 133, 7200 rpm internal drive would be. Secondly, is ata 133 really that much faster than ata 66. Thirdly, does anyone know if drive speed has anything to do with the itunes sluggishness?
    Any suggestions?
    power mac g4 dual 450 Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Wow. I was thinking of posting a similar question myself. I have a G3 as a hardware router (for filtering) and I was wondering how to speed it up.
    The research I've done so far has yielded these tidbits:
    1) ATA 133 isn't much faster than ATA 66 for a single drive. Why? Most drives don't transfer data quickly enough to use the whole 66 Mb/sec bandwidth of ATA 66 anyways. The newest drives that have burst speeds above 66 Mbs could make a difference, but burst speeds are rarely achieved. I've been looking and I've found lots of ATA 100 drives, but no ATA 133 drives. You'd have to get a 10k Raptor or a RAID setup to see an appreciable difference from ATA 66 to ATA 133.
    2) The upper speed limit of FW 400 is 50 Mb/sec. However, the data goes through the FW bridge, which then gets fed to the native IDE drive on the other side. This takes time. External FW drives of the same RPM and protocol (ATA 33, etc) are slightly slower than their internal brethren.
