Serial ATA150 and SATA 3.0Gb/s

Looking to purchase new internal drive for power mac G5...
is there a difference between serial ATA150 and SATA 3.0GB/s??
What is the difference, and will either work or only one kind?

Either will work. SATA is backwards compatible. Your Mac will run either drive at SATA 150 speeds. Many of the SATA 3.o drives have a 16 MB cache though which will increase performance over an 8 MB model. Watch for the Seagate 7200.9 series drives though. They have SSC enabled and it's not compatible with the onboard SATA controller on Macs. Buy it at macsales.com and they'll turn it off for you. I prefer Seagate, just make sure SSC is off if you buy a 7200.9.

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

That is correct. The tech specs indicate:
    Hard Drive Interface
    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
    Optical Drive Interface
3.0 or 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

  • The Toshiba website doesn't recognize my hard drive's serial number and P/N

    Hello,
I bought my Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 hard drive from Amazon a little under two months ago. The hard drive stopped working for some reason (I didn't drop it or anything, it just stopped working).
I was of course trying to use my warranty to fix it or exchange it, but the Toshiba website doesn't recognize my serial number and product number. They're right there, black and white on the sticker on the back of my hard drive, but the website says they're invalid.
Anyone has any clue what's going on? I'd rather not throw 50 euros out the window for less than two months of use.
Product number is HDTB105XK3AA -- and not HDTB105*E*K3AA as some websites say (including Amazon).
    Thanks for your help.

Just adding to the above comments, I have a simialr issue. bought a 3gb drive from amazon and now 8 months later it has just stopped working (wont power up at all) again it has just sat new to my computer working fine for the last 8 months and has now just stopped.
I contacted amazon and got this reply from the seller:
    "Hi Jack,
Thanks for your e-mail and apologies for the problems with your laptop. Your laptop comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty directly with Toshiba so they should be able to resolve this for you. Their customer contact number is 0333 222 7444 or if you prefer to go online the Toshiba Computer Support website (http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/generic/computing-support/) has full contact/ e-mail options.
    Kind regards,
    Customer service Team"
So came here to try and find more details but cannot find the model or anything regarding warranty, any assistance glady recieved

  • Will Serial ATA or SATA Hard Drives work in a Powerbook G4?

I have a 15" Powerbook G4, 867MHz, and I'm looking to buy a new internal Hard Drive. After a few searches, it appears I need a 2.5" HD, but I don't know much about hardware so I'm hoping someone can clarify for me:
Will a Serial ATA or SATA HD work or do I need to find an ATA-100 or older drive?
Is there a maximum RPM or size capacity that will work with my Powerbook G4?
    Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. For anyone else looking at this thread, I was also told at fries that PATA (Parallel ATA) is the new name for ATA/IDE Hard Drives. I just installed a Western Digital 2.5" 250GB PATA drive and haven't had any problems so far. Actually, when I updated from 10.5 to 10.5.8 and restarted, I was stopped at the gray screen with the prohibitory sign (circle with a line through it), but this could be unrelated. After powering off and rebooting, everything booted fine, so I'm assuming things are ok at this point.

  • New SATA 3.0GB/s 2.5" 100MB/s hd's yet anyone ??

Has anyone yet installed the 2.5" laptop Toshiba or Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ hd's and know if they can run at SATA 3.0GB/s or is stuck at SATA 1.5GB/s by hardware ??
2x Guy's buying from Newegg.com has the Toshiba one but they did not say if it is running at 50% SATA 1.5GB/s or at full Speed SATA 3.0GB/s .
My old Hitachi SATA 1.5GB/s 100gb 7200rpm runs at 45MB/s in windows and 21MB/s in OSX 10.4.9. "win = roadkil diskspeed"
The double speed of the fastest one Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ 100MB/s would help a lot provided it can run at full speed.
    Any idea ?

The new drives are backwards compatible. Currently the Seagate 7200.9 version of drives are having problems so you probably want to avoid those for now.

  • SATA 3.0Gb/s vs. SATA150, any difference?

I'm seeing 2 different kinds of SATA drives in some stores, 3.0Gb/s and 150, which is the one for use in G5s? Is the 3.0Gb/s model faster in our computers or is it a waste of money?

I use to think that SATA I and SATA II drives performed very closely but I have found this is not always true.
For instance, the Maxtor Maxline III 300GB Model 7L300S0 has a speed of 64MB per second using Disktester in a PowerMac G5. This very good and beats most other 7200RPM hard drives.
However, I have tested the new Maxtor Maxline III 300GB Model 7V300F0 which is rated as SATA II and it provides 70MB per second with a PowerMac G5. Obviously, the PowerMac G5 ONLY has a SATA I bus but this new Maxtor Maxline III 300GB Model 7V300F0 is able to perform almost 10% faster than the older SATA I version.
Based on my testing, my future purchases will be the Maxtor Maxline III 300GB Model 7V300F0 for my PowerMac G5 models.
Just being SATA II does not make it faster. But there is something in the design of the 7V300F0 that allows it to run faster on a PowerMac G5 than any other 7200RPM drive that I have tested.

  • Can you Use a SATA 3.0gb device on a SATA 1.5gb system?

I have a MS-7142 K8MM-V mo-board that supports SATA 1.5gb and I wanted to get a bigger hard drive but it is SATA 3.0gb.
    Thanks for any input.

You should check that the drive has jumpers that allow switching to SATA150 mode, in which case it should* work.
However, be warned of this, as your board uses the VT8237R southbridge chipset...

  • SATA 3.0GB/s Compatibility

I was wondering if anyone knows if the MBP is compatible with SATA 3.0GB/s hard drives. I have the latest revision (June) and the hard drive isnt any extra money so I'd prefer to get the 3.0gb/s if i have the option. I'm looking at this drive.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149070
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
nothing you can do, since the MBP 'only' have a 1.5Gbps SATA bus:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/15inMacBookP ro0711/Articles/ProductDeveloperNote.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP90005332
But this is no downfall when using only one HD, since no single HD, not even desktop HDs have a sustained throughput that is higher than 1.5Gbps.
Only RAID system do need the 3.0Gbps.

  • SATA 3.0Gb/sec HDD on HP Pavilion DV6790EJ

    Hi all,
Last night my HDD crashed and now I'm looking for an alternative. The question that pops to my mind is:
Will a SATA 3.0Gb/sec HDD work on my 4-years old Pavilion DV6790EJ?
    Thanks in advance.

About all I can tell you is that the models below dv6500 use the Intel 945 chipset and SATA-I and the models above DV6500 use the 965 chipset and SATA-II. HP is not very transparent with these specs and you are just going to have to trust somebody who has been around the forum for 10 years answering all kinds of questions. Even if I am wrong a SATA-II drive will work it will just run at SATA-I speed and you will not even notice any difference, anyway.

  • P67A-GD65 new system bios setting recommendations and sata connections

    Hey all,
My old dual core HTPC (after many hours of use) finally gave up the ghost and moved on to the great PC grave yard . I have ordered all the new upgrade parts from Newegg and am looking for recommendations on what bios settings and setup procedures I should use on the initial bootup and Windows load. I'm not looking to overclock I just want a fast stable system for video decoding and playback. It's my understanding from the manual that SATA 1-2 are controlled by the Intel P67 chip and 7-8 are controlled by the Marvell chip but I am unsure of SATA 3-6. Can SATA 3-6 do raid 0? I want to use the Crucial SSD as my primary boot drive and the 2 WD drives on raid 0 as my secondary drive. SATA connection advice (which SATA ports) and Raid Bios setting would be helpful. Should I install the raid 0 drives after I have Windows 7 loaded on the SSD? Any other setup advice is appreciated.
    Here is my setup.
    Windows 7 64bit
    Bach HTPC case
    Ultra LSP 750Pro PSU
    Intel i5-2500 3.3G CPU
    MSI P67A-GD65 Motherboard
Sapphire HD5570 1G RT Video Card
Crucial CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 SSD 6.0Gb/s SATAIII (Primary boot drive)
    2 WD3200KS Hard Drives SATA 3.0Gb/s (Raid 0)
    Lite-on 12X Blu-Ray Burner SATA
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Two questions answered. SATA 3-6 are controlled by the Intel P67 chip and do support Raid 0 but I still wonder if I should wait to install the drives until Windows has finished it's install.

i was given a macbook 5.1 by my mom, being nice, she erased everything on it, but then could not find the original start up disc. i called apple and had the serial number and said that leopard 10.5 was the operating system that orginally came with it, so i bought it. when i got it,i turned on computer, put in dvd, and immediately shut it off, then turned it back on while pressing letter c. (they told me to do this) i can hear the disc turning but alls i get is blank screen then it shuts down, and restarts. nothing ever shows up on the screen. did i get a wrong disc? should there be something different than just the mac os x leopard 10.5 to get this computer to work again?? thanks for your help!

It means what it says. The "computer person" formatted it wrongly/ unsuitably. it needs to be formatted again.

Hi.  My new computer had Acrobat on it.  Suddenly, I was unable to open any PDF's.  and then I tried to update and was forwarded to the Adobe site that said I had to buy a monthly subscription.  I do not have the physical box with a serial number and was going to buy the one advertised on the website until I discovered it's only for students and teachers, which I am not.  What should I do next as I need to use PDFs on a daily basis.  Thanks!  I would like to be able to download this and pay online.  Possible? I currently have Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.  I have a Windows 7 system.  Please help!

As long as you know your serial number you can download PSE from here:

  • "Example on reading combined signals from a serial port and separating them for display purposes". I am a beginner in Labview and would appreciate if anyone help with that

I am working on a wireless vital sign monitor. I have 3 signals; heart rate and temperature. I filter and amplify the signals before converting them into digital form. I then pass them via MAX232 before passing them to RS232 serial cable.
I am therefore working on a program to receive the combined signal and separate them.
I have come across serial read and write examples on ni.com but am looking for one where I can actually separate combined signals and display them separately.

Reading the serial port will give you a string. How you divide the channels depends on how the data was formatted before it was sent over the serial channel.
If you are designing the instrument, as it seems from your query, then you can set up any form you wish. If your data is always floating point numeric, you could use space or tab characters to separate data words. You could use and XML format. If the instrument is provided by a vendor, contact them for the protocol.
If tabs are used between words and returns between sets of readings, the resutlant string can be interpretted by the Spreadsheet String to Array function in LV.
Things to avoid are characters often used by serial communications systems as control characters. Carraige returns are
often used as command terminators by serial protocols, but may also be used by the port.
