Serial ports not showing up as COMs

Hi,
I currently have the problem where my serial ports don't show up as COMs when I use the VISA resource block. Instead they show up as ASRL1::INSTR for port 1 etc. While this still works ok when I select them manually for running some VI's, some executables where I'm prompted to select a COM port, no com ports show up at all. This is strange because previously I used to be able to see serial ports as COM8 instead of ASRL8::INSTR. Device manager from Windows XP says that the ports are working properly and there are no conflicts. Using Hyperterminal to see information from the serial devices works fine. So i'm not sure what is going on.
One thing I did notice is that in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), three of the ports have the yellow caution sign next to them. One of them is a serial port which says that "VISA port settings are different from the Windows port settings. Go to the Port Settings Conflict tab to resolve the inconsistency." However when trying to resolve this error I cannot save the changes, an unknown error message will come up (maybe because I don't have admin rights on the comp?). The other two ports with the caution sign are Toshiba bluetooth comms. with the device status: "VISA returned this device when finding resources, and MAX could use VISA to parse the resource name. MAX could not succesfully open a VISA session to the device" with no clues on how to fix.
Has anyone had any experience with these sort of problems and how to resolve them.
Thanks,
William

Hi
Thanks for the quick replies. The VISA Aliases from MAX seems to be set up properly, just that when I go to select a com port in LabView, they show up as ASRL1:INSTR etc. This isn't such a big problem as selecting ASRL still works ok, just that some executables and VI's i'm trying to run is written so as to scan for the string "COM" while they search for com ports so when that happens I can't run them since there's nothing to select.  I've attached a couple of screenshots of what I see (note that some of the serials ports, the device status says device is working properly, just the ones I took screenshots off, it seems to have an error).

  • Serial ports not appearing in MAX - VISA installed.

    Hi All,
    Had a rather strange issue today that I couldn't resolve with serial ports not appearing in MAX (and hence being inaccessible to LabVIEW). Under the windows device manager it shows 4 COM ports and I have verified with an external program that they are functioning correctly.
    I had the LabVIEW 2011 SP1 f2 runtime installed, DAQmx 9.6.1 and NI-VISA 5.3 (5.2 also didn't work).
    Things I have tried:
    - Updating VISA from 5.2 to 5.3
    - Reinstalling the COM port devices under device manager
    - Changing the COM port numbers
    - Verifying that the COM ports are functioning correctly
    - Tried adding a USB to Serial converter as a new COM port
    - Reinstalling MAX
    - Reinstalling NI-VISA
    - Reinstalling everything (reboot each time when prompted)
    - Resetting the hardware configuration from within MAX
    - Run installers / MAX as administrator (this is running from the local admin account)
    - Checked that NI-VISA appears under software in MAX
    - Repaired MAX/NI-VISA
    Is there anything else that could cause the COM ports not to appear in MAX when they appear (and work correctly) in device manager when a reinstall of NI VISA / MAX won't solve?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I found the solution - it turns out that the serial ports were available to LabVIEW, they just didn't show up in MAX because installing just the runtime does not show the devices in MAX.
    Despite doing a lot of googling earlier, it didn't throw up this knowledgebase article until I searched for it under a different phrase - http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/766FD80DAE42E52886256A0200619CFE?OpenDocument

  • KM2M serial port not working in Linux

    I noticed a few Linux postings so I thought I'd give this a shot. I'm running Fedora Core and for some strange reason I can't seem to send any communications out to the ttyS0 (COM 1) or ttyS1 (COM 2) ports.
    Does anyone have any suggestions on making it work?
    Thank you.

    No, your code had no termination characters at all - automatic or not. The enable termination character for the VISA Configure Serial Port is only for reads. Just like the help explains.
    And while you should check the download page for updates, LabVIEW comes with the 34401 driver.

  • My Lightroom 5 upgrade serial number not showing up on My Products page; chat support useless

    I purchased a Lightroom 5 upgrade license on July 25th.  I didn't receive a confirmation email but my serial number was displayed on the order summary page after purchase.  I tried registering the serial number repeatedly through the My Products page but for some reason the serial number wasn't showing up, even though the registration process reported a successful result.  Furthermore, Adobe products bought from the Adobe store should automatically be registered according to Adobe's web site.  Apparently this must have failed.  I need to reinstall Lightroom 5 but the serial number is still not showing up on the My Products page.  I just spent an extremely frustrating hour with Adobe "Live" chat who did nothing but send me in circles and repeat the same canned responses over and over again.
    I'm currently on hold with "phone support" but I'm not optimistic as I've been on hold for 28 minutes.  The only other support option was a link to this forum, hence this post.  Hopefully someone from Adobe can retrieve my serial number and contact me.  Failing this my only other option will be to contact VISA and open a claim.
    My comical-if-it-weren't-so-sad conversation with Adobe support:

    Joel: Are you alive?
    Naveen R: I'm sorry due to application error I'm unable to check on that.
    Joel: Can I please get a phone number to call? My only other choice would be to open a claim with VISA for fraud since Adobe seems unwilling to help in this matter
    Naveen R: I will provide the steps to locate the serial number on your Adobe account.
    Joel: I already know how to look for a serial number. The problem is that it doesn't show up in the Adobe account portal.

    This chat session has ended.
    Thank you for contacting Adobe.

    OK, I was able to recover my previous system's image and thankfully it appears you can get the serial number from Help->System Info.  I attempted to register the serial number again via the My Products page and while it indicated that the registration was successful, we'll see.  At least I should be able to install LR5 on my new machine now.
    Edit:  I also just discovered that the serial number is listed under My Orders, but not under My Products.  Weird.  In my defence , I never thought to check My Order history because I never received a confirmation email and the order wasn't listed after purchase...even as late as mid-August (when I last checked.)  Very strange but it's all good now.
    Edit #2: OK now I just feel silly.  I just received an email from Naveen with an actual support case AND the correct serial number.  So, I stand corrected.  The Live Chat process still felt incredibly long with some seemingly canned/automated responses but, in all fairness, he did get back to me.  Thank goodness I washed both feet today...

  • Serial number not showing up in system profiler

    hi,
    i recently had a problem with my speakers in macbook.
    i sent it for service and the service center replaced my main board
    now the system profiler is not showing my serial number.
    do any one know how to fix this problem.

    You would need to send it back to have the serial number burned in to the board. This seems to be a common occurrence when the board is replaced. There should be a number you can call on the paperwork from the repair and discuss it with them.

    Has anyone else this problem?

    Thanks dastoelk & Russ,
    That definitly sounds like the issue, but the only thing new on the drive since the last time I opened FCPX is some new P2 media that's buried in the "PROJECTS" folder and some NEFs from a school play I recently filmed, in the "Greater Tuna" folder.  But I have other P2 media and NEFs on this drive that have been on it for a while.  Also, forget to mention, runnig FCPX 10.0.9

  • Serial Port not accessible until I run MAX

    Hi!
    On my machine I can access all Serial ports perfectly. I put a Vias Resource in my VI and get a drop down menu with all my serial ports. But on other machines (Runtime v7 and VISA runtime installed) I don´t get the names (e.g. com1 com2) but only
    ASRL1:****
    ASRL2:****
    ASRL10:****
    I know that ASRL1 is COM1 but when I select it it dowsn´t work.
    If I now install MAX on the machine and run it once without changing the configuration my ports work.
    Can anybody tell me how to use the ports without using MAX??
    regards
    hmann

    Hi hmann,
    When you run MAX it is configuring your VISA alias list behinf the scenes. See "JB" answer to this question to find out how to do this without using MAX. It basicly requires editing an INI file.

  • Tecra A11 - Serial port not working

    I have a Tecra A11 running windows 7 professional (32 bit).
    My serial port does not appear to be operating as I am no longer able to connect to industrial automation PLC's which require connection to the serial port for programming.
    Some of the software I am using is RSLinx, Easysoft and the like.
    Any assistance with this matter will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello
    I assume you need the notebook at your company and normally in every company there is a local IT-Support that you can ask all questions if you have any problems.
    So I would recommend contacting an administrator. Usually the guys know how to connect the computers to all important industrial components/computers and how to configure the port for that.

  • Serial number not showing on delivery or invoice

    Hello I am trying to get serial numbers to print out on Delivery and Invoices.  According to Suda in a prior thread (Serial Number on the Delivery Challan) this is suppose to happen automatically in 2007 versions of SBO.  I have created a test item (serial numbers setting "On Every Transaction"), rcvd the item and assigned it a serial number.
    I then input a Delivery for the test item and printed it to the screen (draft) before posting it via the "Add" button.  The draft did not show the serial number.  I did the same for an invoice using the test item and again the serial number did not show on the draft invoice.
    What step am I missing to get the serial number to print on the delivery and invoice?
    What is required to get the serial number to print out on other forms such as credit memos and sales returns?

    Hi
    You are right . So far some other thread has been generated also before identifying same issue .
    The option you have :
    1. Administration --System initialisation -print preference >AR Invoice
    However , if you want to bring it your serial number in one invoice , you probably need to customise your PLD .
    2. AR invoice donot show serial number at row level because serial number is stored in different table .
    Right click on AP invoice with serial number  and Serial number  transaction report or By menu bar  Goto -->Serial Number and transaction report .
    Hope this will narrow down what you are looking for
    Thank you
    Bishal

  • Serial port not reading after few seconds PLZ HELP...

    Hi,
    I have developed a GUI using Swing in NetBeans IDE 4.0 on Windows 2000 professional for one of our products.
    It communicates with the associated Hardware through serial port.
    The GUI sends commands to the H/W to perform some functionality. After receiving response from the H/W, GUI displays the necessary messages.
    Since the H/W does require some time to perform the indicated operation, it sends the response after 10-11 seconds but my GUI is not reading the response.
    Both the command and response are single byte (8 bits) wide.
    The GUI can read the response if sent within 3-4 sec.s but not after that.
    I have disabled the Receive TimeOut on the serial Port.
    Following is the code I use to Open and use the SerialPort.
    public void OpenPort(){
             portList = javax.comm.CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifiers();
            while (portList.hasMoreElements()) {
                portId = (javax.comm.CommPortIdentifier) portList.nextElement();
                if (portId.getPortType() == javax.comm.CommPortIdentifier.PORT_SERIAL) {
                    if (portId.getName().equals(Welcome.CommPort)) {
                        try {
                            serialPort =  (javax.comm.SerialPort)portId.open("FCAT-01 ATE", 20000);
                        } catch (javax.comm.PortInUseException e) {}
                        try{

                   try {

           Pls help me how to solve this problem as its really very urgently necessary to release the product.
    Thank u for ur time and consideration,

    Sir,
    Here is the complete code.
    The H/W takes about 10 seconds to reply. The GUI is responding to first response from ATE H/W and not to the subsequent ones. The ATE responds after the GUI sends command when the user clicks OKButton.
    package my.ate.pkg;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.*;

                        } catch (javax.comm.UnsupportedCommOperationException e) { //display erro}
    }Probably the command after clicking OKButton is not reaching the H/W. because the ATE will surely respond if it receives the command and that is tested several times.
    Thanks.

  • USB Ports not showing

    My backup drives and flash drives have disappeared from the desktop.  I have unplugged everything, rebooted and they're still not showing up.  I checked the drives with my other computer and they are all fine. They are just not being recognized on the HP Envy.

    Did this happen after an update of some kind? Consider using Microsoft system restore to revert back to a checkpoint dated before the update happened. You wil not lose anything important on your PC by doing this and system restore is reversible.

  • Desktop software. serial port not configured properly

    i cant seem to configure my serial port. actually i just dont know how.....ive went into serial setting but i cant seem to find a port number. it doesnt detect anything.....????? can someone with some patience pleeeeeeeese help me. thx alot

    Port is supposed to be auto detected!! Have you tried detecting the port manually by going to connection settings and pressing detect button ? Which version of desktop manager your're using?

  • Transaction IQ09 u2013 production ORDER number for the serial number not showed

    In the ALV generated by IQ09, we couldn´t see any production order number with its respectives serial numbers listed.
    We try to check in NOTES SAP, through "SER*" tables and programs RIQEUI21 and RIOBJK00, but without success.
    In the IQ02 and IQ03 transactions, we can find the orders numbers, but our users would like to see at the ALV list.
    Anybody knows any transaction that shows serial numbers and production orders in a unique LIST.
    Thanks
       Claudio.

    Hi,
    I think you can customized your requirement, see below table
    In table SER05, the list of serial number details can be obtained. key the order no in SER05 table, get field OBJKNR, then pass this OBJKNR in table OBJK .
    Some useful table for serial numbers
    SER00 Generic table for serial numbers
    SER01 Serial numbers assigned to a delivery
    SER02 Serial numbers assigned to a guarentee
    SER03 Serial numbers assigned to a material document
    SER04 Serial numbers assigned to an inspection lot
    SER05 Serial numbers for a production order
    SER06 Serial numbers for Handling Units
    SER07 Serial numbers for Stocktaking
    SER08 serial numbers for Orders (SD)
    I hope that this information clarifies the issue.

    Sankaran
