Serialization problems with JOptionPane

Hi,
I am having a problem attempting to serialize and deserialize a JOptionPane contained within a JPanel running in an applet.
The code is straightforward enough:
JOptionPane m_pane = new JOptionPane("Hello world !!");
contentPane.add( m_pane, "Center" );
While displaying the above contentPane, the applet is serialized.
On deserializing the application, no deserilization errors are reported. However, the font, the borders, and the position of the (default) OK button are all altered. If I then attempt to serialize/deserialize for a second time, serialization fails, and a lengthy error message is written to the console. Here's a snippet of the console message:
readObject - javax.swing.JOptionPane[,0,0,296x90,invalid,alignmentX=0.0,alignmentY=0.0,border=,flags=-15896,maximumSize=,minimumSize=,preferredSize=,icon=,initialValue=,message=Hello world!!,messageType=PLAIN_MESSAGE,optionType=DEFAULT_OPTION,wantsInput=false]
Serialization Failed: Reason java.lang.Objectjava.io.NotSerializableException: java.lang.Object
java.io.NotSerializableException: java.lang.Object
     at java.io.ObjectOutputStream.writeObject0(Unknown Source)
If I add a simple JPanel (instead of a JOptionPane) to contentPane, then no problems are exhibited.
Has anyone came across this issue before?
Thanks.

Maintaining serialized objects across versions is a problem. There are no easy solutions.
Have you searched the site for other threads on the subject?

  • Strange problem with JOptionPane.showInputDialog

    I have a strange problem with JOptionPane.showInputDialog in that when I run a program anything that is typed in is displayed backwards, for example: I type this character > and this < is what is displayed.
    I've uninstalled the sdk and reinstalled it twice but that hasn't solved my problem and the java plug-in in the control panel is displaying the same symptoms.
    I did a search before posting this but all I got really was posts from people who wanted to reverse their text.
    Thanks for your help on this.

    Is it just the < and > characters?

  • Serialization problem with FlashPlayer 10.1

    Hi,
    here is a message that I have post in the AS3 section (http://forums.adobe.com/message/2938096), but someone gave the hint that this section should be more appropriate.
    A call in remote method, using amf/BlazeDS, is failing for the following reason :
    "The expected argument types are  (int, myPackage.MyClassVO[])  but the supplied types were (java.lang.Double, java.lang.Object[]) and converted to (java.lang.Integer, null).
    Cannot convert typeflex.messaging.io.amf.ASObject with remote type specified as 'null' toan instance of class myPackage.MyClassVO"
    So the serialization is failing.
    MyClassVO have only int variables, so nothing fancy.
    The point is that it works perfectly with previous versions of Flash, except 10.1
    So the definitions of the VOs are not the problem.
    Does any change have been done in the new flash player, with the serialization ? Does someone have also experience serialization problems with this new flash player ?
    Thanks for any help.
    M.
    Environment : Windows 32bits (but happens on Mac OS as well)
    Flash version : WIN 10,1,53,64
    Browser : Firefox, Opera, IE... they all have the problem

    Hi,
    by digging more and more, it appears that the problem is really on flash side.
    This error appears on java side :
    "Cannot convert type flex.messaging.io.amf.ASObject with remote type specified as 'null' to an instance of class myPackage.MyClassVO
    flex.messaging.io.amf.translator.decoder.DecoderFactory.invalidType(DecoderFact ory.java:369)"
    So after a look on the function invalidType in DecoderFactory, it apprears that
    object.getClass().getName();
    returns "flex.messaging.io.amf.ASObject" instead of "myPackage.MyClassVO"
    So Java don't recieve the correct type MyClassVO, but ASObject.
    And that only in FlashPlayer 10.1, but not FlashPayer 9 or FlashPlayer 10, where Java recieve the correct type, MyClassVO.
    Any help will be gladly appreciated, I'm running out of idea !
    Thanks !

  • Customized KeyboardFocusManager problems with JOptionPane-Dialogs

    Hi,
    I have a problem I'm not able to solve: With Java 1.4.2 unter Linux, as well as all newer Java Versions (1.4, 1.5, 1.6) under Windows, dialogs created by JOptionPane.showXXXDialog do not react to keyboard events like <Tab> any more when using a customized KeyboardFocusManager. Java 1.5 and 1.6 under Linux work fine.
    Here is what I did:
    I have a JFrame and want some customized focus control when navigating through the Frame with <Tab>. Therefore I've implemented a class
    public class EfaFrameFocusManager extends DefaultKeyboardFocusManagereand said in the main JFrame:
    EfaFrameFocusManager myFocusManager = new EfaFrameFocusManager(this,FocusManager.getCurrentKeyboardFocusManager());
    FocusManager.setCurrentKeyboardFocusManager(myFocusManager);The constructor of my EfaFrameFocusManager stores the JFrame (this) and the original KeyboardFocusManager (2nd arg) for later use. Within my own FocusManager, I've implemented the method
    public void processKeyEvent(Component cur, KeyEvent e)which is checking whether the desired Frame (efaFrame) is currently active or not. If it is active, it's performing my customized operations which is working well. If it is not active (e.g. because a dialog created with JOptionPane.showConfirmDialog() is open), it should perform default actions. So I said within processKeyEvent:
    if (!efaFrame.isActive()) { // efaFrame is the previous "this" arg
      fm.processKeyEvent(cur,e); // fm is the previously stored CurrentKeyboardFocusManager
      return;
    }Instead of invoking processKeyEvent on the original KeyboardFocusManager fm, I also tried super.processKeyEvent(cur,e);, but without any change in behavior.
    As I said before, this is working well under Java 1.5 and 1.6 with Linux.
    However, it is not working unter Windows (any Java version I tried, including 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6) and also not unter Linux with Java 1.4. With these combinations, dialogs created by JOptionPane.showXXXDialog(...) do not respond to the <Tab> key. I do see that my own FocusManagers processKeyEvent method is invoked, and I also see that it invokes the one of the original FocusManager, but the Dialog doesn't react.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Nick.

    I have a JFrame and want some customized focus control when navigating
    through the Frame with <Tab>. sounds like you should be doing this via a FocusTraversalPolicy

  • Keyboard problems with joptionpane.ShowConfirm

    hello,
    I am using show confirm dialog and there is a yes and no button with it.
    I want the software to exit when the user clicks yes button.
    the code works fine when the user uses mouse. but when I use the enter key on yes or no button, the application exits in both the cases.
    further more if I perform the same action with the space bar on the keyboard it still works fine and when I hit space bar on the no button the application stays. but with enter key the application doesn't seam to take the right yes/ no value in the integer.
    what's the problem
    and how do I correct it.

    Yes X server is alright. I should have mentioned one thing though in my previous email is that there is another class which extends JFrame and is part of the package that this class is in also running in the background but that class does not interact with this class at all and does not even know if it exists!
    I don't know if that thing is causing some kind of problem which is not coming up here?

  • Problems with JOptionPane and intrrupting

    1.when i interrupt in main a thread,
    and the thread is executing a JOptionPane-Message,
    the interrupt is lost, if the thread is asking isInterrupted() bevor show Message, the Interrupt is visible. ITS A BUG?
    2. if a thread is creating a new JFrame() and obtains an interrupt, a error of JVM is reported:
    AWT blocker activation interrupted:
    java.lang.InterruptedException
    What can i do? please help me???

    Well what are you trying to interrupt, and why?
    I think the interrupt was meant to be used for when the application is shutting down. So those two problems of yours seem normal. Most other application wouldn't close while a dialog box was up, right?
    If you're trying to synchronize threads, look into the wait() and notify() methods in the Object class.

  • Problem with writing and reading using serialization

    I am having a problem with writing and reading an object that has another object in it. The purpose of the class is to write a order that has multiple items in it. And there will be several orders. This is for an IB project, where one of the requirements is to utilize a hierarchical composite data structure. That is, it is "one that contains more than one element and at least one of the elements is a composite data structure. Examples are, an array or linked list of records, a record that has one field that is another record, or an array". The code is shown below:

  • Problem with Enter key and JOptionPane in 1.4

    Hi,
    I had a problem with an application I was working on.
    In this application, pressing [Enter] anywhere within the focused window would submit the information entered into the form that was contained within the frame.
    The application would then try to validate the data. If it was found to be invalid, it would pop up a JOptionPane informing the user of that fact.
    By default, pressing [Enter] when a JOptionPane is up will activate the focused button (in most cases, the [OK] button) thus dismissing the dialog.
    In JDK 1.3 this worked fine. But in JDK 1.4, this has the result of dismissing the dialog and opping it up again. This is because the [Enter] key still works on the frame behind the JOptionPane and thus tries to validate it again, which results in another invalid dialog msg popping up.
    The only way to get out is to use the mouse or the Esc key.
    Now, in the application I put in a workaround that I was not very happy with. So, to make sure it wasn't the application itself, I created a test which demonstrates that it still misbehaves.
    Here it is.

              KeyStroke enterKey = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_ENTER, 0, true);
              button.getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_IN_FOCUSED_WINDOW).put(enterKey, "test");
              button.getActionMap().put("test", action);
              contents.add(field);
              contents.add(button);
              frame.pack();
              frame.setVisible(true);
    }Does anyone have any solution to this problem?

    I know that focus management has changed alot.
    Based on my experimentation a while back, in 1.4 it still believes that the JFrame is the window in focus, even though a JOptionPane is currently in front of it (unless I misinterpreted what was going on). Thus, the frame seems to get the keyboard event and re-invoke the action.

  • Problem with flush method

    Hello, I'm new in java development, and I'm french with a student English, sorry if that I say is strange is the expressions.
    I have a problem with network streams and serialization.
    I want to establish a connection between 2 apps, on 2 different computers. For the development, the tests are local (IP : 127.0.0.1)
    The problem : I send 4 bytes and I flush after, and I receive 6 bytes. To know what is transmitting on the connection, I override the OutputStream class.
    I think that the flush() method produces 2 bytes but i don't think how.
    I put you the codes follow :
    Thanks for any help.
    The sender function :
    // This function is called when the user want to send data to another user.
    // This piece of function establishing the connection between 2 users.
    public int startListeningForNFT(String senderUserName, int indexOfSender) {
          System.out.println(senderUserName + " demande à " + this.userName + " de démarrer la procédure de réception.");
          /* Cette fonction est l'interface ente le serveur et le client2,
           * elle retourne le port  et l'IP que le client2 le lui a renvoyé. */
          /* This function send an Integer which will trig a reception function in the receiver
             This function is called in a Thread. */
          try {
             this.oos.writeObject(44);
             this.oos.flush();
             System.out.println("On a bien envoyé OBJ2AskerInfos sur le port " + portToListen);
             byte b = this.ois.readByte();
             System.out.println("Byte = " + b);
             b = this.ois.readByte();
             System.out.println("Byte = " + b);
             b = this.ois.readByte();
             System.out.println("Byte = " + b);
             b = this.ois.readByte();
             System.out.println("Byte = " + b);
             b = this.ois.readByte();
             System.out.println("Byte = " + b);
          catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
          return Constantes.PORT_DATA;
       }The receiver function :
    public class ClientClient implements WindowClient {
       // This 3 attributes are initalized correctly.
       private Socket comSocket;
       private String comPort;
       private String userName;
       public ClientClient() {
          try {
          comSocket = new Socket(ipToJoin, Integer.parseInt(comPort));
          oos = new ObjectOutputStream(new DebugOutputStream(comSocket.getOutputStream()));
          ois = new ObjectInputStream(comSocket.getInputStream());
          oos.writeObject(userName);
          oos.flush();
          ThreadInputListener til = new ThreadInputListener();
          til.start();
          catch (UnknownHostException e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
          catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
          catch (IOException e) {
             e.printStackTrace();
             JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, ("Auncun serveur n'a été trouvé sur l'adresse indiquée :\n" + ipToJoin), "Erreur", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
       public class ThreadInputListener extends Thread {
          @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
          public void run() {
             try {
                while(true) {
                   Object receivedObject = ois.readObject();
                   // Si l'objet reçu est un OBJ2InfosOnAsker => Renvoyer le port.
                   // If received Object is an integer
                   if(receivedObject instanceof Integer) {
                      System.out.println(userName +" a bien reçu l'objet OBJ2InfosOnAsker...");
                      System.out.println(userName +" a bien reçu int." + receivedObject);
                      System.out.println("On lance les 4 int :");
                      // Send 4 bytes to the sender (control bytes, just for solve the problem)
                      oos.writeByte(7);
                      oos.writeByte(8);
                      oos.writeByte(9);
                      oos.writeByte(10);
                      oos.flush();
                      System.out.println("...et a bien envoyé le port");
             catch (IOException e) {
                // ArrayList<HostClient> temp = new ArrayList<HostClient>();
                // temp.add(new HostFictiveClient(userName));
                // fenetreprincipale.updateClientList(temp);
                fenetreprincipale.addDiscution("Vous avez été déconnecté du serveur.");
             catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
       }The override function of OutputStream :
       public class DebugOutputStream extends OutputStream {
          private OutputStream os;
          public DebugOutputStream(OutputStream os) {
             super();
             this.os = os;
          @Override
          public void write(int b) throws IOException {
             System.out.println("ClientClient envoie " + b + " soit " + ((char)b));
             os.write(b);
    }The sender function says :
    Host demande à User1 de démarrer la procédure de réception.
    On a bien envoyé OBJ2AskerInfos sur le port 3001
    Byte = 4
    Byte = 0
    Byte = 7
    Byte = 8
    Byte = 9And the receiver function says :
    User1 a bien reçu l'objet OBJ2InfosOnAsker...
    User1 a bien reçu int.44
    On lance les 7 int :
    ClientCLient envoie 119 soit w       //
    ClientCLient envoie 4 soit          // Both of this lines are stranges
    ClientCLient envoie 7 soit
    ClientCLient envoie 8 soit
    ClientCLient envoie 9 soit
    ClientCLient envoie 10 soit
    ...et a bien envoyé le port

    Ok, but this layer has maid just to print in the eclipse console the bytes written on the stream, With or without this function, the flush() operation generate 2 bytes, I don't know why.
    When I want to send manually the byte '7', the result of both lines :
       oos.writeByte(7);
    oos.flush();is that my writeByte and my flush send 3 bytes :
    Byte val = 119 charcode = w
    Byte val = 1 charcode =
    Byte val = 7 charcode =
    Only the 'Byte val = 7 charcode = ' line is good.
    Why the flush generate 2 unknown bytes at this code position ?Actually, it's (might be) writing more than two bytes. Run this:
    public class OOSTest {
       public static void main(String[] args) throws Throwable {
          ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
          ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(baos);
          oos.writeByte(7);
          oos.close();
          byte[] bytes = baos.toByteArray();
          System.out.println(Arrays.toString(bytes));
          //prints "[-84, -19, 0, 5, 119, 1, 7]"
    }The explanation is in the Javadoc for ObjectOutputStream:
    Primitive data, excluding serializable fields and externalizable data, is written to the ObjectOutputStream in block-data records. A block data record is composed of a header and data. The block data header consists of a marker and the number of bytes to follow the header. OOSs should only be used when the OIS is being used properly on the other end. If you don't want this header, use a DataOutputStream. Is there an actual problem or are you just confused about the extra bytes? If there is a problem in reading, my guess is that you're somehow not reading from your OIS symmetrically with your OOS. Can you post a complete, compilable example that demonstrates the behaviour? There's obviously an issue somewhere, I just haven't spotted it yet.
    If there wasn't an actual problem in reading, well: there's your explanation.

  • Problem with threads running javaw

    Hi,
    Having a problem with multi thread programming using client server sockets. The program works find when starting the the application in a console using java muti.java , but when using javaw multi.java the program doesnt die and have to kill it in the task manager. The program doesnt display any of my gui error messages either when the server disconnect the client. all works find in a console. any advice on this as I havent been able to understand why this is happening? any comment would be appreciated.
    troy.

    troy,
    Try and post a minimum code sample of your app which
    does not work.
    When using javaw, make sure you redirect the standard
    error and standard output streams to file.
    Graeme.Hi Graeme,
    I dont understand what you mean by redirection to file? some of my code below.
    The code works fine under a console, code is supposed to exit when the client (the other server )disconnects. the problem is that but the clientworker side of the code still works. which under console it doesnt.

  • Problem with ArrayList

    Hello,
    I am having a problem with a program I am trying to write. The idea of the program is to:
    A) read a list of movies list from a text file
    B) create an object for each movie using the information from the text file
    C) place the objects into an arrayList
    My problem is that when I check my arrayList it seems to only contain multiple copies of the first movie read from the text file. Here is my code
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.BufferedWriter;
    import java.io.FileReader;
    import java.io.FileWriter;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import java.io.FileOutputStream;
    import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    public class MovieReader
         PrintWriter outputStream = null;
         public void readFile()
              try
                      BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("movie.txt"));
                      String str;
                      while ((str = in.readLine()) != null)
                           process(str);
                      in.close();
              catch (IOException e)
                  e.printStackTrace();
         ArrayList <ValidMovie> movieList = new ArrayList<ValidMovie>();
         private void process(String line)
              String[] array = line.split("\t");
              int i = 0;
              for ( i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
                   String tempTitle = array[0];
                   String tempYear = array [1];
                   String tempRating = array [2];
                   String tempFormat = array [3];
                   ValidMovie uuj = new ValidMovie(tempTitle, tempYear, tempRating, tempFormat);
                   movieList.add(uuj);
              System.out.println("item at index 1 is:   " + movieList.get(1));
    //~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
         private void writeFile(String [] arrayL)
              String [] arrayWrite = arrayL;
    //~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    //$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
         public static void main(String[] args)
              MovieReader mv = new MovieReader();
              mv.readFile();
    //$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
    }This is the code that creates an object for each movie:
    import java.io.Serializable;
    public class ValidMovie implements Serializable
         private String title;
         private String year;
         private String rating;
         private String format;
         public ValidMovie()
         public ValidMovie(String tTitle, String tYear, String tRating, String tFormat)
              title = tTitle;
              year = tYear;
              rating = tRating;
              format = tFormat;
         //Getters for title, year, rating and format
         public String getTitle ()
              return title;
         public String getYear ()
              return year;
         public String getRating ()
              return rating;
         public String getFormat ()
              return format;
         public String toString ()
              return title + "\t" + year + "\t" + rating + "\t" + format;
    }The following is what I have in the movie.txt file:
    Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    What Lies Beneath     2000     1.5     DVD
    Beneath the Planet of the Apes     1970     1     DVD
    You Can Count On Me     2000     3.5     Theater
    And finally this is the result when I run the code:
    item at index 1 is: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    item at index 1 is: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    item at index 1 is: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    item at index 1 is: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    I am sure that it is something simple that I am overlooking but I cannot figure it out. When I change the index in the code:
    System.out.println("item at index 1 is:   " + movieList.get(1));to 0 or 2 or 3 then result is the same, it will just show the first movie in the text file. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks for the reply, it helped but I am now getting 4 of each of the movies after adding you suggestion. This is much better now I just need to figure out why the loop is causing the extra copies. Thanks again :)
    Item 0: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD
    Item 1: Bamboozled     2000     2     DVD

              You realy can do it like Xiang says, but the better way is to use packages. That's
              the way BEA is designed for. If you use packages you can but your bean classes
              in every subfolder beneath Classes. Here for example we have the subfolders test
              and beans:
              You have to declare the package on top of your Bean Source Code:
              package test.beans;
              In your JSP you don't need the import code of Xiang. You only have to refer the
              path of your bean class:
              <jsp:useBean id="testBean" scope="session" class="test.beans.TestBean" />
              There are some other AppServers that only can deploy Java Beans in packages. So
              if you use packages you are always on the right side.

  • Problems with report builder 3.0 in SCCM 2012 R2 CU2

    Hi All
    I have problems with editing  (Using Report builder) existing reports  or creating new ones in SCCM 2012 R2 CU2
    We version of SQL we use is SQL 2008 R2 SP2
    I already asked this question in the SCCM 2012 forum but the problem is not related to SCCM but has something to do with application report builder
    I changed the registry key and edited the Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe.config.xml as described in the following link
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/smartinez/archive/2012/07/03/system-center-2012-configuration-manager-create-report-don-t-work-what-do-i-do-now.aspx
    Afterwards I try to edit an report I see report builder is being downloaded and after it generates the following error “Application did not succeed. Unable to continue”
    Error details are

    I hope someone can give me some advice , I am lost with this error
    Thx in advance
    Regards
    Johan

    Hi Miss Katherine,
    1. I went through the SQL steps in the link you posted
    2. I updated the Reg Key and Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe.config file with 3.0 on both the
    server and the console machine.
    3. I copied the .DLL file from your OneDrive and replaced the existing one on the server.
    4. I uninstalled and re-installed the reporting role on the server and received the 1015 in the log.
    5. I restarted the server and the client machine
    I do get a slightly different error now after using the new DLL

  • Problems with Java and Business Objects

    <p>Hello everybody,<br /><br />I&#39;m new in BusinessObjects/Crystal Report.
