Series of long beeps (never ending)
Hi,
I just bought an 845GEM, a Celeron 2.5 GHz Boxed PC400 and one Corsair PC2100 DDR-DIMM 512MB ECC REG.
When I put them together (no other things connected yet - no PCI/AGP cards, no hard drives, no nothing), the result is a series of loooong beeps when I turn on the computer. According to my hw supplier, the RAM and CPU should work with this mobo. The RAM has been tested on other machines, and works. Sadly, I have no other 478 hardware available, so I can't find out if it's the CPU or mobo that's DOA. :-(
Any tips on how I can find out?
-jo
...with all the components connected. (I started out that way.) When that didn't work (didn't even get to POST), I stripped everything that wasn't needed to get to post, off. Now it's just the mobo, CPU and memory. (Graphics are on-board.)
Also, I forgot to say - I've also tried resetting the BIOS.
According to the link you posted: "Continuous Beeping: Memory or video problem". Since I tested the memory in another machine, then I guess the likelyhood that the fault is in the mobo (not the CPU) is pretty large.
Right?
Thanks. :-)

anybody knows how long takes the proxy client generation process?I have this issue also, with images from my D70 (~6 megapixels) ... no solution, except that when it happens, quitting and re-launching Aperture seems to clear it up for a while, at least until it happens again.
Given that you have almost twice the RAM and four times the CPU cores that I have, I suspect this is a software issue, and not one of insufficient hardware resources. :-) -
hello this is my second post....before i had problems with me8 bios, then downgraded using this forum tool..thx for that.
now i can boot my PH67A-C43 (B3) board and use it normally, but my problem is that when ever i try to restart or boot it again without waiting i get 1 beep with is normally the one which indicates that system is OK and then 1 long beep and 2 short beeps and no display on the monitor....i can only boot my PC if i let it turned off for 5 or more minutes...this is really annoying!!

How to repeat event every hour never end?
How to repeat an event every hour and never end?
Am I crazy for doing this? Well Harvard Business School wrote an excellent article about time management. 1. Make list in the morning. 2. Refocus every hour. 3. Review list at end of day. It's been working great when I'm alerted every hour.
I want to make an event in iCal that goes on indefinitely and alerts me every hour. I have not been able to get this to work. I can make it work for one day but it stops after one day even when I have it set to go from today to a year from now. I also have it set to repeat "Everyday" and end "Never".
There seems to be some sort of bug because I set 24 alarms in sequence (12AM, 1AM, 2AM, 3AM etc...) but the hours have all become mixed up. It's now (3PM, 2PM. 8AM, 11AM...?).
Mac OS X version 10.5.7, Build 9J61I will give your suggested a try. It might work splitting it up, but I would like it for at least all waking hours. Here's what I'm trying to do:
http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/bregman/2009/07/an-18minute-plan-for-managing.h tml?cmmmc=npv-_-WEEKLY_HOTLIST-_-JUL_2009--HOTLIST0727
In actuality, if I go to Walmart and replace my (long since past) Casio watch that can be set to beep every hour I'll likely have my solution. But also I like the visual reminder to Refocus that I could get from iCal. Thanks -
A22m, one long beep help
One long beep ( lasting about 1 sec ), every once in a while, no errors, no noticeable problem with the operation of the laptop. This started happening when I upgraded memory ( swapped out a 64MB IBM module with Kingston KTM-TP390X/128 ) and hard drive over a year ago. I run Win2k. I just upgraded memory again swapping out the Kingston memory with a Samsung 256MB module but I still get the one long beep now and then. All memory is recognized and utilized. I've never seen any documentation on what just one long beep means. Any ideas? I'm just about ready to open this laptop up and destroy that speaker.
If I remember rightly, it's been a while since I've seen an A-Series, there is a BIOS menu; Config > Alarm. Here you can disable the Power Beep and Volume Beep. Maybe you could try disabling them - might be a help ??

Fail to boot (short-short-short-long beep code) after M92p BIOS Update
Hi,
I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version using the System Update tool from Lenovo. For a while everything seemed to be working alright, as the BIOS was dowloaded and the computer rebooted. After rebooting the first time i was presented with the BIOS utility, and noticed that the update was progressing.
After 20 or so seconds the computer rebooted again. This is where my problems began. The computer immediately started beeping this short-short-short-long melody from the speakers. I thought this was normal, so I left the computer on for quite a while.
However, the beeping never stopped. Now the beeping resumed the instant i plug the power back in. I have yet been able to actually getting any sort of information on-screen telling me what's wrong.
I've tried following the "Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure" on page 267 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck with that so far. No matter where I place the jumper, the beeping code is the same short-short-short-long melody (yeah, it sounds like a disney tune or something).
Any bright ideas? The machine type is a M92p 2992-B3G
I'd hate to have to send it in for repairs, and Lenovo's Norwegian support line doesn't open until Monday, and there seems to be no way to call their 800-number in the states from here
Oh, and would this be covered by my warranty if repairs / motherboard replacement is the only way out?
UPDATE #1:
I found this in the manual;
3 short beeps and then 1 long beep DRAM memory
error
Perform the following actions in order.
1. Make sure the memory module(s) are properly seated
in the connector(s).
2. Replace the memory module(s).
3. Replace the system board.
This is pretty much Lenovo's way of saying "You're screwed", isn't it?
UPDATE #2:
I've now tried pretty much everything;
The solution as proposed on page 267 in the Hardware Maintenance Manual
Unplugging all cables and harddrives before booting
Removing my PCIe video card and PCI Wireless NIC before booting
Removing all memory modules, and trying 1 and 1 module
Moved a memory module from another machine that I know is working
No luck so far.
Ideas would be welcome at this pointI'm glad to hear it's just a simple memory error, however the original problem in this post is a bit more than just a memory problem.
This became a problem after a BIOS update, so somewhere along the way one of Lenovo's developer screwed up badly, and it's been bugging me ever since. There's absolutely no way for me to use any PCI-e card with my M92p.
I've tried 6 different cards, 3-4 different memory module combinaties, with our without harddrives plugged in, and every thinkable combination of these.
No luck. Therefore, I simply conclude that Lenovo are dicks, and we all know what dicks enjoy doing; **bleep**ing people over.
I've given up on the issue, and I'll never buy a Lenovo again after this. -

Please help me...You should read up on Garage Band, I figured it out in 2 minutes and I don't really use that program.
You need to create a new software instrument and then use a midi keyboard or the software one provided. Hit record and hit your note, holding it down as long as you want.

Dropped database in a never-ending app
Hello,
I have an application which processes all the time by implementing a never-ending loop and a sleep at a given interval. It accesses the database to retrieve, insert and update data throughout the entire process. I have created a connection pool that contains a configurable number of connections (for any future multi-threading) that will be retrieved to complete the SQL transaction and released when it no longer needs it. The list of connections is decreased when I access the pool and increased when the connection is released. My concern is that I would like to detect when the DB has been dropped and brought back up without having to restart my app. The first way to detect it would be to check the connection object when it is used, but I am not sure if that is the way to do it correctly. Does it fail when I create the preparedStatement or when I run executeQuery or executeUpdate? What is the best way to detect whether I need to re-create my pool of connections?
I appreciate your feedback.
Thank youIt will fail when you try to open the connection. If for example you are using a JNDI DataSource when you call the DataSource.getConnection() method it will throw a SQLException with the correct code and message for the database vendor.
That said, I wouldn't do it the way you're doing it. By holding an open connection, you're pirating a connection resource that the DB may need for something else, or another app might need and in my opinion it's just bad design.
I would recommend opening the connection at the beginning of the method where you are doing the data access and then closing it (along with all of the other database resources before leaving that method. A general code pattern would look like this.
public void getSomeInformation(){
String sql = "SELECT something FROM somewhere" ;
try{
// initialize the connection
// initialize the statement object
// prepare whatever parameters
// execute the statement
// make sure you got some results and process accordingly
catch(SQLException e){
// handle any exceptions that might come up
finally{
// close the result set
// close the statement
// close the connection
// set all of the above to null to mark them for GC
}Some of this may seem like overkill, but that's a feeling that goes away when you've had your application spin into the ground because you accidentally left database resources open and killed the database and the application server.
Yes, there's a little overhead in terms of getting the connection, but it's a delay that my customers have never complained about in the face of the abject reliability of making sure that the house is clean and orderly all the time. -

Maybe the loop is time-consuming (instead of "never-ending"), and if you wait long enough, it will end. In the meantime, you may want to tune your logic.

FCPX never ending transcoding after Mavericks?
Hello folks,
Saw some of the other threads about problems with FCPX and Mavericks. Fortunately, everything has been fine for me... up to this point. I didn't see this discussed yet so I figured I'd post my issue in it's own thread.
I've been trying to import some files (AVCHD) as usual for ongoing projects. I copy the files and transcode them to optimized media. Never had a problem before. It seems to copy all the files fine, but seemingly never stops transcoding. I've been trying to import two different projects... about 4-5 hours of footage each... and it's been two days now and the transcoding never ends! Typically one such project takes about real time to import and transcode (4-5 hours, if not faster, never really timed it). I'd begin an export in the morning and come back after lunch and it would always be done.
That is no longer the case it seems.
Has anyone else experience the same issue? I just installed any and all updates available (nothing for FCPX however), restarted my computer and FCPX, and am trying again. Hopefully the footage ingests fine this time. But for the sake of losing more time and getting more frustrated, I'm hoping someone out there has a solution to this in the event the same problem persists for me.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
MattHi Russ,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. You've been extremely helpful in the past! As an update... I started the import around 7pm last night (EST). This morning, at 5am, it was still importing and transcoding... but it looked like it was at least working. After restarting last night, I tried to import and transcode a single short clip before doing the full import and that was easily successful.
When I get to the import prompt, I only check off "Copy files to Final Cut Events folder" and "Create optimized media". This workflow has been great for me. I turn off background rendering and don't even render 2 hour long projects with heavily edited footage before exporting to m4v master files (which turn out just fine without the rendering). That's beside the point though.
Back on track, when I open the Background Tasks, of course the transcoding is going. The Importing Media is stuck on 99%. Not sure if that's normal or not... never really paid attention to that in the past. The Rendering says it's creating audio waveforms. Again, not sure if that's normal or not.
In Activity Monitor, I might have found a problem. It seems FCPX is only using around 0.5% of CPU during the import. No other program is running really except for Activity Monitor, which would leapfrog FCPX in how much of the CPU it's using at time. At the bottom, it says my computer is around 98-99% idle! That all raises an eyebrow to say the least. I'm not a computer whiz when it comes to the technical aspect of how my system might be performing and I have admittedly not tried an import on another machine yet (I have three iMac's). So it may just be an issue with this one machine.
It's a 2011 model year running a 2.93 quad, i7. At least I'm pretty sure of that. I'm on a corporate event now typing away from another one of my iMac's and won't even know if the import and transcoding back at home is successful until I get back in tonight around 6:30 or so.
Even if it is, there's definitely something going on with how long it's taking. What's typically a 4-5 hour process (est) was still ingesting 10 hours later. -
K8N Neo Platinum: no video output, long beep and long wait, led 3 green
I have a K8N Neo Platinum for about 4 years without big problems. Two days ago I dismounted teh pc to clean and put a new HD and when I mounted again it did not work.
Problem:
Quote
* System hangs and no video output;
* Speaker keep making long beep followed by long rest;
* D-Bracket LEDs are 3 green and 1, 2, 4 red meaning it hangs somewere near teh keyboard controller initialization;
What I have tried:
With no change:
Quote
* Taken off everything from teh MB and put back only CPU, PSU, RAM, VGA and plugs for power and reset switch;
* Turn on teh MB out of teh case;
* Clear teh CMOS setting JBAT1 and by removing battery;
* Tried all possible combinations of one and two RAM sticks and slots on MB;
* Take out all of teh RAM;
* Take out VGA;
* Take out RAM and VGA;
* Switched VGA;
* Switched PSU;
With little change:
Quote
* Take out CPU: make all four leds red and no beep.
System specifications:

PSU
Coletek 450W +3.3V~20A, +5V~32A, +12V~16A, +5VSB~2.0A, -5~0.5A, -12~0.5A
I have already had some problems like this before with power failures but magically things worked again. This time was teh same. I got things working some times at random (really random lol) by taking power cables, reseting bios and turning back on but teh problem reapeared when I put HDD back and did not work again when I removed it. Now I can't seem to get it to display anything.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: sry I made a little confusion: It is a K8N Neo and not a K8N Neo2.Quote from: Fredrik on 18-November-08, 05:19:33

Keyboard problem, you think? What do you have?
Two things that are quite common:
Do not attach PS2 keyboard when there is power in the system.
Do attach USB keyboards when you are up and running in Windows.
This is not it, but Logitech keyboard drivers often complicate things.
I do use a PS2 kbd but never had problems with it (unlike teh PS2 mouse). I do not think it's kbd fault because it won't POST with or without it. -
IdeaTab Lynx K3011; annoyingly long beep?
I'm not sure if this is a 8.1 issue or not since I just got the tablet a day before 8.1 was released. I'm sure it's a security feature since it seems to happen when the vents are blocked or when I push the CPU. I don't know what's causing it since it comes with no warning message or anything but when it starts it's a loud, long beep that lasts 2-3 minutes and becomes annoying very quickly.
It seemed to happen after I installed 8.1, updated all the drivers, put in a faux leather case, and especially when I hold it on the sides (blocking the vents). Today it also happened while I was running a large resource program.
Is there any way to turn it off? Make it end quicker? Or any information?Rob,
I've not heard of this before and will need to look into it. I think you are indicating that this seems to be a warning beep tied to an increase in system temps either driven by CPU loading or blocked air vents?
Thanks

Hello,

I recently upgrade my 4go of ram to 8go of ram (Corsair Vengeance SODIMM 2x4go PC12800 1600Mhz CL9 1.5V CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9).
In order to test the ram I use the Appel Hardware Test.
Both mode, simple and extended, seems to be frozen and never ends.
I try to let the test works the all night and the all day but the test never ends.
So I decided to test my ram with memtest86 boot cd and everything seems to be ok.
The fact that Apple Hardware Test never ends trouble me.
Do you think there is a problem with my ram ?
Do I need to return my ram ?
ThanksWelcome to the Apple discussions.
We could discuss how you'd benefit from the additional memory, however, since the system isn't working, let's focus on the beeps.
When you start the system, it goes through some tests (called the power on self test or POST) before loading the operating system. If it finds any errors, it beeps, and the beeps are:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
3 beeps means it doesn't find any memory that passes the POST test. The fact that this started up after the service center installed the memory upgrade is suspicious, however, if it worked in the store then stopped working later, it may just be unfortunate timing.
There are some company's on the internet that claim they can repair the logic boards, otherwise, Apple's solution is to replace them. In the US, some Apple stores offer a 'fix everything' service for $350, which is less than specifically replacing the logic board - perhaps there is a similar service in Taiwan. -
H57M-ED65 with i5 cpu - added HD and now we get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps
So a friend of mine has a MSI H57M-ED65 that he added a 2 terabyte sata drive too. Everything has worked perfect with this board for about 3 years. they turn it on and now it gives a beep of 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. No Video. Now I have seen the beep codes but it doesnt add up. I have removed everything and reseated. They do not use the onboard video, if I remove all the memory and power it on the board recognizes the fact no memory is there and gives the correct codes. I have checked all connections but the only thing online I see is it says possible video problem. Doesnt really add up and I checked the few connections that had been un plugged and everything is correct.
Has anyone ever seen this problem after putting in a drive? Oh yea also I have unplugged the dvd and hd's and still get the beeps. If its still video issue I am going to assume it has to do with the onboard video cards because with out the other card installed it still gives errors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.i heard about the full cmos clear yesterday....after the flash i just pressed the clear cmos button at the back panel...but now i did the full clear...
