Series40 phones and VoIP

This guide will concentrate on the open SIP standard based VoIP, because S40 does not have Java APIs to build closed system VoIP solutions (such as Skype, Fring, Nimbuzz ...)
Nokia maintains a list of the S40 phones that have built in SIP VoIP capability in the firmware.
Configuring the phone for VoIP usage
There are three different ways how to configure VoIP in use in S40,
Using the built in setup wizard which can be found from, menu>settings>connectivity>internet tel.
The list of VoIP service providers differ based on which country you are located in.
If you cannot find your VoIP service provider from the list, but know the SIP details for it, choose "sip settings" from the provider list and fill in the SIP details
Some operator branded firmware have crippled setup wizard so that it's empty
Configuration over the air (OTA SMS). The VoIP service provider providing the OTA SMS configuration needs to have S40 VoIP compliant configuration settings
Manual configuration requires following steps,
Download settings example (XML file) compatible to your S40 phone
Download wbxml2 tool
Modify the XML file to suit your needs
Use the xml2wbxml.exe (from wbxml2 tool) to convert the XML file to wbxml format and rename the.wbxml to .prov
Scan and connect your phone over Bluetooth to your PC
Send (OBEX PUSH) the .prov file to the connected phone.
There exists a free tool for the manual configuration called n0kVoIP which makes the process easier.
Other tips
Default call type (i.e.. What happens when green button is pressed) can be change in menu>settings>call>call type settings. Setting it to GSM only, will disable VoIP for registering to the service.
If the phone supports VoIP v72, v81 or v92 then VoIP works only over WiFi. If the phone supports VoIP v104 then VoIP works both over WiFi and 3G.
SIP URIs can be added to the contact in phonebook by adding 'internet telephony' detail into it.

There is no operating system as such in the IP phones like 7960 or any other IP phone. It will have some firmware and config files which it downloads from the Callmanager while registering to it. All the call processing is done by the Callmanager. There is no special software running on the phones. You may like to have a look at the IP Telephony documents which have more information.

  • X5800 how to use SIP and VOIP

Hello, I have a X5800 music, model 5800d-1 and I can enter all the necessary SIP data. I get the message (settings, connectivity, admin settings, sip settings) registered which is fine. My provider is freephonie. Question: 1) Although on the freebox the SIP is activated, I don't receive incoming call on my nokia. 2) How do I tell my nokia to call on the internet ? Is it possible only using SIP tel numbers which I can enter in the contacts list? Help much appreciated. Pierre.

SIP and VoIP are not synonymous. VoIP can indeed use SIP (and often does), but other services, such as video sharing for example, also use SIP.
It so happens that the 5800 has no native support for VoIP, which is why you can't make SIP calls using it.
Your only solution for SIP is to use third-party services such as fring, for example. Once logged into your fring account you can subscribe to a SIP service. Fring's systems will register to the SIP account and relay the comminucation through your fring account. There's lag and the audio quality isn't as good as a direct SIP connection but at least it works.
The alternative is to use a phone that supports VoIP/SIP natively.

  • Ip phone and pc VLAN security issue - ISE 1.0

    Hello there.
We are about to implement IP phones to our current network and during testing I have found 2 issues.
1- ip phone connects to a protected port using ISE mab authentication for the data network.
The voice VLAN is set up static on the port. The pc VLAN is given by ISE profiling.
Then the issue is that once the pc connects to the VLAN it belongs to from the ip phone it leaves open that vlan on that port which means that if I connect another pc it will get the original VLAN the port had open up the connection with. This is a big security issue as computers that should not be allowed on specific VLAN can access them this way.
2- once the connection is up and running on the port for both the phone and the pc, there is re-authentication Happening every minute to ISE. The Authentication logs are getting so many messages for just one port. So once we convert from 2 ip phones to 500, that is definitely going to generate a lot of unnecessary traffic.
    Let me know your thoughts...thanks
    Port config info....below
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
description Extra port by Camilos Desk

    end

    On # 1
You have the make sure that
"authentication host-mode multi-domain" command is under each port
This will allow one voice vlan and only one PC vlan at any given time. If you disconnect a PC and connect onother PC mac address to it, the phone will reinitialize to accept or reject the new mac based on its profile.
    On #2
I have not found a solution. But what I have found after deployment is that it has happend only on 2 VOIP phones, out of 70 that we have as of now. So it might to be related to ISE.
On the other hand we are not using Cisco phones but mitel. So this might be a whole issueon itself.
    Hope this helps.

  • 802.1x with Vlan assignment and IP phone and PC

I have a Catalyst 4510R and I want to im plement 802.1x with dynamic VLAN assignment via Radius server. I am going to plug to switch ports Cisco IP phones and PCs (PCs are plugged in the IP phone).
For this implementation I need to configure the switch port in mode trunk because I have voice vlan corresponding IP phone and data vlan corresponding to PC.
However I have read that I can not enable 802.1x on a trunk port.
    How could I configure this?
I need that when the PC is authenticated correctly is assigned to his cooresponding data vlan and the IP phone is in the voice vlan.
    Thanks

You should configure the port as an access port with an aux-vlan. Here's an example:
    interface GigabitEthernet2/2
    switchport access vlan 701
    switchport mode access
    switchport voice vlan 702
    load-interval 30
    qos trust device cisco-phone
    qos trust cos
    auto qos voip cisco-phone
    dot1x pae authenticator
    dot1x port-control auto
    tx-queue 3
    bandwidth percent 33
    priority high
    shape percent 33
    spanning-tree portfast
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
    service-policy output autoqos-voip-policy
    Hope this helps,

  • VLANs and VoIP on the same port

Hello, we want to move our VoIP system on its own vlan. We currently have everything on one big broadcast domain. I have been doing some reading and have head about Voice Vlans and switchport modes. All of our computers are connected to our ip phones so they are on the same physical line. The phones are Aastra 480i and they run on a sphericall phone system. The phones can tag the phone data with 802.1p/q. If im using static port based vlans how would i configure the ports to accepts these 2 diffrent vlans?

    Hi Friends,
I have tried many a times with Avaya Ip phones and Cisco swiches and it works fine.
Actually what I think CDP is used for inline power negotation so if you dont have Cisco switches you have to use external power supply. Also now a days switches are coming which internal power supply which supoprt IEEE standard so if we have those switches we can use other vendors ip phones without external power supply.
Anoher thing I will always recommend not to configure trunk especially cause tht may result in pc getting DHCP ip adress later. I have experienced many a times this situation. When you configure switchport voice vlan command on the switch it automatically forms an internal trunk which is not displayed on the switch but internally it works.
Right now I was not able to find one cisoc doc which especially says no need for trunk if you configure switchport voice vlan command on switch.
    So just 2 commands
    switchport voice vlan
    switchport access vlan
    Works perfectly fine.

  • My new iPhone 4S has hearing problem.speaker and headphone works very good. However using handset to make and receive calls I cannot hear anything?I did restore the phone and removed the plastic. Is there any solution to this problem please?

I am having heraing problem with iPhone 4S.Speaker and headphone works well.No echo. When I use handset to receive or make calls,I can't hear anything?I restore the phone and removed the plastic as well.Is there anyway to fix this problem?

I personally haven't experienced much of the "reverberation/feedback" when using a headset on the i4S...
Yes, I have near-perfect hearing too (for scope, squeaky brakes hurt my ears) I come from many conversations on many phones and types and first off, CDMA technology is great for coverage, terrible for voice quality. HD Voice in Europe made for some of the best phone conversations I've ever had.
Back on track, feedback is most noticable (similar to the landline phone) when using the iPhone without a headset, but for me it's not an absolute criticality mainly because I use VoIP apps alot, so maybe it has desensitized me some over the past year.
But whenever I'm on a call, and the other person has me on speakerphone, I have alot of trouble talking because of the feedback loop caused. So the less of my voice I hear the better I can talk.
Have you tried a bluetooth headset yet?

  • Really? FIOS phone is VOIP now?

Yesterday, I re-upped my two-year FIOS contract and this morning, I went to make a local phone call and it said I needed to enter the area code first.
I called Verizon and they said that when I renewed, my phone was converted into VOIP.
That's ridiculous ... if I wanted VOIP, I'd use Skype.
Does this mean that there's no more 8-hour window where if my power goes out, I can still use the phone?  That's really the only reason I even want a land line - it's a backup in event of emergency.

Well, there are three separate issues.
The internet going down the other night was a widespread outage in the area, not something specific to me.  I talked with some friends who had FIOS and their internet was down or slow as well.  So I chalk that up as one of those things that happens and it doesn't really bother me.
Separate from that, my internet has probably gone down maybe 10-12 times since I have had Verizon and when I call in, they always go through some troubleshooting thing they have (I forget what they call it, recycling something) and it fixes the problem.  The last time it happened, they sent me a new router and told me, the next time it happened, to replace my old one with the one they sent me and see if it solves the problem.  (Obviously, that didn't help the other night since it was a widespread outage that had nothing to do with me.)  But while this is slightly annoying, it really isn't that big of a deal.
What is a big deal and what is a deal killer is that my phone went down the other night during the outage.  I'm currently playing the transfer game with Verizon where everyone I talk to assures me that it's not possible for this problem to happen and then transfers me to someone else.  It's absurd and insulting for them to tell me it's not possible - it did happen.  I was on my computer at the time the internet went out and the little network icon popped up to say I had no internet access.  I picked up my phone to dial Verizon support and had no dial tone.  I then checked one of my regular (non-cordless) phones just in case it was a problem with my cordless phone and it was out too.  When the internet came back up an hour later, I had a dial tone again.
I don't need to hear, "it's not possible", I need to either hear that they're going to switch me back to what I had before, that they are fixing the problem, or I'm going to drop at least the phone service with an eye towards dropping FIOS all together if I can arrange to get Cox out here before my 30-day recission period is up.

  • Problems establishing phone for VOIP

Those who user voip and Airport Extreme what set up do you use?
I just purchased the time capsule and I am setting up the Airport extreme wireless. I have internet connection but cannot get the VOIP to work.
My set up is as follows: time capsule is plugged into the cable modem and the voip router is plugged into time capsule. The telephone line is plugged into the voip router. The voip router power light is on as well as the internet light. However the phone light is not on. I have tried changing ports for both the airport extreme and voip router but neither of these changes work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    never mind its working now

  • Apple USB Modem and VoIP

I've been trying to help a friend set-up an Apple USB modem with his MacBook Pro. He wants to have it as a back-up, in case he is somewhere without any other form of Internet access. I've been using Macs for a long time and thought this would be a no-brainer, but it hasn't. I get a dial-tone, I hear the attempted connection sounds, then nothing - "dial tone not detected", or something like that. Earthlink confirmed that the access numbers were correct, plus the phone works fine. I've tried 2 different USB modems. I realized that he is using VoIP for his home phone and that the line runs through a Linksys "Viatalk" router. Could that be the cause of the problem? Are modems "supposed" to work over VoIP systems?
    TIA

due to the various encoding and compression algorithms used, you typically cannot use a modem (including the modem built into fax machines) on most VoIP lines.
The VoIP connection is optimized to carry voice traffic and doesn't support the full signal range needed by modem communications.
You might try asking your VoIP provider for some assistance - some offer fax modem lines which may support modem transfers.
On the plus side I trust you are using this for testing only, right?
There's no point in using a modem as backup in case your main internet connection goes down because if your main line goes down, so does your VoIP connection - therefore you couldn't use the VoIP connection anyway.

  • Single CAT5 for IP phone and Desktop

I have Avaya Definity voice switch with VoIP option. My LAN is all Cisco. I need to come up with a way to use single ethernet cable for both Avaya 4620SW phone and PC. The phone does have 2 ports. I created voice VLAN on my CAT6K with L3 and my data VLANs. I have read about "set port auxiliaryVLAN" option, but when implement it, my phone doesn't reach its voice VLAN. Any ideas?

MCIPADD is your gatekeeper ip address or what avaya calls CLAN.

Almost all N and E series Nokia phones and definitely all of them with Wifi capability support this feature.
