Serif italic fonts display as script

In Firefox 7, web sites which have some text styled as serif italic display as a strange script. A good example is the recipe site URL below but the problem occurs on most Wikipedia pages as well.
I am including a screen shot of the recipe page in the troubleshooting section so you can see how the recipe page displays for me.

You can do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

  • Chinese font display problem

In the javascripts of this web site http://weiqi.sports.tom.com/php/zhuanti/zhuantinew.php?id=23
( follow any red link in this page, there will be a javascript popped up), some chinese characters can not be displayed in the right text box and no matter how many changes I make in the fontconfig.properties file about the Chinese font, there is no change of the chinese characters in these java script pages (in the right text box and on the lowerright buttons).
I want to change all the chinese font displayed on the javascripts to the font "ar pl shanheisun uni", how to? Thanks.
My system is Ubuntu 7.04, locale is zh_CN.UTF-8. Jre 1.6.0 or Jre 1.5.0.
I used another Redhat 9.0 system(Jre 1.5.0_02), it can display these characters in the another chinese font. That system is not configured by myself. So I think there must be some way to change these fonts.
    Here is my fontconfig.properties file:

    /* BeginOAWidget_Instance_2141544: #MenuBar */
/* Settable values for skinning a Basic menu via presets. If presets are not sufficient, most skinning should be done in
these rules, with the exception of the images used for down or right pointing arrows, which are in the file SpryMenuBasic.css
These assume the following widget classes for menu layout (set in a preset)
.MenuBar - Applies to all menubars - default is horizontal bar, all submenus are vertical - 2nd level subs and beyond are pull-right.
.MenuBarVertical - vertical main bar; all submenus are pull-right.
You can also pass in extra classnames to set your desired top level menu bar layout. Normally, these are set by using a preset.
They only apply to horizontal menu bars:
MenuBarLeftShrink - The menu bar will be horizontally 'shrinkwrapped' to be just large enough to hold its items, and left aligned
MenuBarRightShrink - Just like MenuBarLeftShrink, but right aligned
MenuBarFixedLeft - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedLeft', and left aligned.
MenuBarFixedCentered -  - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedCentered',
and centered in its parent container.
MenuBarFullwidth - Grows to fill its parent container width.
In general, all rules specified in this file are prefixed by #MenuBar so they only apply to instances of the widget inserted along
with the rules. This permits use of multiple MenuBarBasic widgets on the same page with different layouts. Because of IE6 limitations,
there are a few rules where this was not possible. Those rules are so noted in comments.

                                                    MenuItem, and MenuItemLabel
at a given level all use same definition for ems.
Note that this means the size is also inherited to child submenus,
so use caution in using relative sizes other than
                                                    100% on submenu fonts. */

/* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
/* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.

Usually, the reason why a widget does not work is because the support files are not-present/corrupt/out-of-date.
    Try using
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://s3slider-original.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/s3Slider.js"></script>
it may help. The jQuery version can be changed to a more modern one.

  • How to solve some fonts displayed as squares issue.

                             Hi,
I try to stabilize a pdf generation config with specific parameters to allow exact render of text with any reader.
    1°| Configuration
    RIP
    Compatibility: pdf 1.5
    Compression: images only, zip
    Fonts: all integrated, no substitution.
    [PDFCreator only:
ghostscript x64 9.06 (junction to a independant install as PDFCreator install 32b version)
    use windows fonts yes
    no fontmap files]
    PRINTER
    Substitution table: no substitution
    Smallest vector font size: 10px
TrueType Fonts: Download as soft font
    Postscript: Optimize portability
    Download TrueType Fonts: Native TrueType
    Postscript level: 3
Since this problem occurs for years now, i can mention 2 products and version concerned at now:
-PDFCreator version 1.6.2 (always occured as long as i can remember).
    -novaPDF version 7.7 build 387
Reader affected is Adobe READER X version 10.1.5.33 (option use local fonts on or off no effect)
Reader not affected evince version 2.32.0.145
    System Windows 7 x64 Fr
    Browser Firefox 18.0.2
    2°| Issue
You can encounter this problem even with testpage printing (Title replaced by squares) but it's not the most annoying case so i will present it true a webpage problem.
    For instance with css supressed:
    http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/specs/transport.html#soap
With Firefox configured with default font Times New Roman
Then try to print to pdf with either PDFCreator or novaPDF, open with Adobe reader you get :
    Properties:
    open with evince you get:
    Properties:
    Strange!
But now let's try to use a font from adobe reader Minion Pro.
    properties:
    with evince:
    properties:
When saving to html file and open with LibreOffice Title appears to be verdana;helvetica;sans-serif.
    Export to pdf give this:
(As export is not a printing i show this because long time ago i used makepdf if i remember which was not a printer.)
Is True Type not supported ?
Do i need to modify adobe reader config manually?
I need new ideas for a solution as it's not possible to ask everyone to use evince... and Times New Roman is not the only font causing this issue.
    Thanks for reading.

Actually, because the difference was intriguing, I found a little more time. Here is a discussion of the problem. I do not expect it to mean anything to you, but can be passed along to the maintainers of GhostScript and/or PDFCreator if you wish.
The file was created by GPL GhostScript 9.06, application PDFCreator Version 1.6.2.
In creating this PDF, the three TimesNewRoman fonts were embedded, as symbolic fonts
with randomly assigned glyphs starting with index 0. No Encoding was used in the font
dictionary. They contain a (1,0) and (3,0) cmap subtable.
The TimesNewRoman font is set up almost correctly, with Flags 4 (symbolic), though 6 would be
    better prthaps (symbolic, serif)
The TimesNewRoman,Bold and ,Italic fonts had Flags 34 and 98 respectively. Crucially, these
do not set the symbol flag (values of 6 and 70 respectively would work as expected).
ISO 32000-1 9.6.6.4 talks about how Encoding is managed for TrueType fonts. It identifies
two cases which should "ensure predictable behaviour across all conforming readers":
    * A nonsymbolic font should specific MacRoman Encoding or WinAnsiEncoding.
    * A font not using standard encodings should not specify an Encoding; should set the
Symbol Flag; and should contain a 1,0 subtable.
Neither of these cases apply to the ,Bold or ,Italic case (but the presence of a Symbol
flag would make them apply, and tests show this increases consistency).
Hence, this is in the territory officially described by ISO 32000-1 as "dependent on
the conforming reader" and not honouring "should follow certain guidelines to ensure
predictable behaviour across all conforming readers".
The behaviour of this PDF is not predictable, as has been seen (evince displays as expected
by the user, if not by the specification, while Acrobat, Mac OS X Preview and Chrome do not).
Recommend that the PDF creation module in GhostScript be modified to follow one of the
two cases above, for consistent rendering.

  • Better font display: Ask for tester

Here is my chinese opmitised fonts.conf file, and ANYBODY who is using another language is supposed to benefit from it, you can get better font display if it works, so I ask for more tester, all you neet to do is to replace your original fonts.conf file(under your /ete/fonts/) with this one, don't forget backup firstly.
I don't know how to enclose an attachment, so I post my fonts.conf 's content here, I am using freetype 2.1.8 and fontconfig 2.2.2, I compiled them by abs, and almost the same PKGBUILD as Judd, however I don't apply any patches.
    fonts.conf:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- /etc/fonts.conf file to configure system font access -->
    <fontconfig>

The intent of this standard configuration file is to be adequate for
most environments.  If you have a reasonably normal environment and
have found problems with this configuration, they are probably
things that others will also want fixed.  Please send any suggested
changes to [email protected] so that future releases can include
        such changes.
Note that the normal 'make install' procedure for XFree86 is to

I got brave and gave your font.conf a shot.  everything worked great but when building the fontconfig pkg I had to change the source line to...
    source=(http://freedesktop.org/~fontconfig/release/fontconfig-2.2.2.tar.gz)
other than that the freetype and font pkgbuild files worked and installed fine.
When I replaced my font.conf file with yours, after backing up mine ofcourse, and rebooted I didn't have any problems but the overall apearence was not as good as it was when using my original file. I switched back to my original and no harm done. I don't speak chinese but was curious. I'm just learning abs and building my own packages. I was impressed with your pkgbuild files working and then installing with no errors. The first ones I have ever used that worked.  but now when I run pacman -Su it wants to upgrade back to fontconfig-2.2.1-2 and freetype2-2.1.7-1. I should say downgrade. I guess I need to search for an answer to why it doesn't recognize the new pakages as being the latest.

  • Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts not working in Indesign CS5

Hi I created some Maths Text books about 5 years ago in an older Adobe Indesign program. I now have to re-edit the files using Indesign CS5.
The Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts i used back in 2005 now do not display in Indesign 5 when i open up the program. The other Euclid Symbol Fonts do. I think that they are all truefonts.
    I have attached an example.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.6.8.
http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn109.htm    <-- this is an error log from 'MathType' the guys who created the font - yet unsure what this actually means for me
    Here is the example
fonts in the Euclid Family on my Mac

Congratulations on fixing the problem yourself! Hopefully our article (to which you linked) was of some help in that process. Let us know if you need anything else.

  • Acrobat X standard problem Verdana-Italic font

when opening a pdf from a reliable source using acrobat_x  standard a message comes up that it can't find  Verdana-Italic font and doesn't display most of  the document. However if I open the same pdf with Adobe reader XI it has no problem. any suggestions out there?

    Quit acrobat
Try throwing away Tha Adobe Fon cache.
    Open Acrobat
Let it rebuild the font cache
    Then try opening File.

  • Resolved: Font display in RH9 changed

Recently while working in RH9, the font display in the topics changed to display differently than the selected font. When I generate, the topics display the appropriate font; however, when I reopen RoboHelp after a reboot, it still displays the odd font. It's like it is displaying MS Sans Serif versus the selected Verdana. Spacing is off as well. all this in the visual display is distracting and makes it difficult to format visually. I published and it seems OK once published as well. The font displays just fine; however, back to the robohelp files, looks weird.  Anyone else experience this and figure out how to fix?
I continued reading down through the list of RoboHelp HTML discussions and found the solution in someone else's discussion "Problem with design view display." Adjust the Zoom. the zoom adjusted to 90% for some reason (possibly hit the wrong combination of keys while working) and when adjusted back to 100%, it resolved the problem.
    THANKS.

Is the zoom setting perhaps not set to 100%? Can you post a screenshot of the RoboHelp window showing this behaviour?
    Greet,
    Willam

  • Can I make a non-italic font italic with indesign.

I have a client who insists I can take a font they want me to use that does not come in italic and make it italic? I think I remember you used to be able to do this in quark but is there some way to do it in indesign?

To expand on Peter's responses ...
You can oblique text as he describes, however, that does not make a true italic style. It is only a “slanted” version of the orignal style. A number of san serif font families have oblique styles instead of true italic styles where such slanted (“obliqued”) version of typefaces are provided as part of the font family although in many such cases, the font style is still labelled (or maybe better put, mislabelled) as “italic” as opposed to “oblique.” This hackery is much less common for serif font families.
A true italic font actually have a different design that the underlying “normal” / “regular” style. Typically, these differences are most pronounced in a lower case “a” or “g” for example.
You may want to point this out to your client, contrasting text rendered with the artifically obliqued font with that rendered with a true italic font in a similar font family. They may or may not actually care, but at least they won't complain about it afterwards.

  • Foreign fonts display in character drop down menu

When designing a sign for a customer, I take a photo of the existing signs, place on a new document in illustrator cs6, type text then scroll through the text character drop down menu to match the new sign text to the font that is currently on the customers signs, business card etc.
There are many different types of fonts and I would prefer not to have the adobe system fonts, asian, arabic and other fonts that are not used for my purposes.
Is there a way to remove them from this list.
I have tried deleteing them from the window 7 font manager but they are essential system fonts and it displays a message that some programes will not work if I delete them.
I have tried show/hide in the windows 7 font manager but this has no effect on the fonts displayed in illustrator.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    update...
Seems windows 7 fonts can be set to show/hide for some programs but it does not work in illustrator. I have found a helpful program by Adobe Air called Font Picker which displays only the fonts installed and excludes hidden fonts (windows 7 font manager).
It would be good to have a search facility that has fonts catagorised. There are a few out there where you can tag them but I don't see myself sitting through 35000+ fonts I have collected over the years.
I did install Illustrator CC which has a few added options under the character font drop down menu. It also has a link to Typekit on Adobe Cloud but would you believe it didn't have Calligri which is a very common script font.
Has anyone on this forum found a solution to this before. There are may questions related to this on the web but no answers or feed back.

  • Font display problem after updating to 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5.5, I have an identical font problem on two different machines: an iMac and a Macbook. The problem concerns font display on the screen and only occurs when viewing PDF files using Leopard's built-in facilities. So the problem shows up in Preview and in Safari, but not when viewing the same file in Adobe Acrobat. (There's also no problem with the same font in MS Word.)
The problem: Many italic characters in Times New Roman Italic display with (more or less) vertical strokes are rendered very thin. The result is a bizarre, distracting effect. The result is particularly noticeable with lowercase "o", but is widespread. I don't have the same problem with plain Times. It's possible other fonts have this too -- I haven't checked them all -- but most don't.
The problem appears to be related to anti-aliasing. When I turn this off in Preview, the display is of course not pretty, but the problem is otherwise entirely gone. (Times New Roman text and Times text now look basically the same.)
I've tried obvious things along the way: reinstalling the font from the system disk, flushing the font cache, etc. even reinstalling the 10.5.5 combo update. Nothing helps.
    Any suggestions?
(Here is a PDF file on the web that has this problem for me -- in case you want to check whether you have it too: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/linguistics/LaTrobePapersinLinguistics/Vol%2009/07Popo vic.pdf. Nothing special about this file, though. Any PDF in Times New Roman with italics has the problem for me.)

    V.K. --
Boy, I'm hoping Kurt will come in here,
but the page linked shows up perfect on my iMac.
I have yet to update to 10.5.5. I'm at 10.5.4.
But for you guys, what the h*ll?
I'll be back after I update.

i have the same problems sometimes in mail
is anybody have infos about that problem ?
    thanks !
    p.s. mail version 1.3.11 - safari version 1.3.1

OS X cocoa apps like Safari and Mail don't like non-Unicode fonts using common names that replace Latin with symbols or other scripts. Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic are common culprits. You need to remove such fonts to solve the problem.

  • Font displays incorrectly

I have set Verdana as my display font in all circumstances and always have done with all versions of Firefox. But in this version, on CERTAIN text (e.g. on Google searches, all text beneath the link), the font displays in some 'comic' style font that is near completely illegible.
Certain parts of the webpages are fine and do display in verdana, but not sure why as there are 3 settings for fonts in preferences, serif, sans serif and monospace, but it could have nothing to do with these as they are all set to Verdana as is the default.

You can do a check for corrupted fonts and other font issues:

The PDF display correctly when we use Adobe Reader 9 to open it or print it out.

  • Better gpdf font display

How do I get better font display in gpdf?
I've tried a number of things in the /etc/xpdfrc file, but nothing seems to help. For example, I've set up type1 fonts (with my own specific path), but the only thing which seemed to work was the symbols. I now get symbols instead of blocks.
    # use the Base-14 Type 1 fonts from ghostscript
    displayFontT1 Times-Roman /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/n021003l.pfb
    displayFontT1 Times-Italic /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/n021023l.pfb
    displayFontT1 Times-Bold /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/n021004l.pfb
    displayFontT1 Times-BoldItalic /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/n021024l.pfb
    displayFontT1 Symbol /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/s050000l.pfb
    displayFontT1 ZapfDingbats /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/d050000l.pfb
I've also tried setting fontDir to the location of truetype fonts on my system. I've tried it with and without trailing "/", just in case that makes a difference.
There are fon'ts. I just can't seem to get gpdf to use them.
    Thanks.

I got brave and gave your font.conf a shot.  everything worked great but when building the fontconfig pkg I had to change the source line to...
    source=(http://freedesktop.org/~fontconfig/release/fontconfig-2.2.2.tar.gz)
other than that the freetype and font pkgbuild files worked and installed fine.
