Serious corruption

I am pretty sure my macbook pro is seriously messed up. A lot of the time it wouldn't boot and sometimes it would not recognize the Macintosh HD in the start to disk mode off the install cd. It now starts most of the time after I deleted my startup folder. Now though i cant update mac os, install any programs, perform any disk utility function and half the time it won't boot right. My Macintosh HD has a Mount Point : /. And that is it. i would think there should be more. Also applications are crashing often and sometimes I can't drag icons or double click with the pad. Oh and I tried to archive and install and it took about 25 minutes to check the install disk and then it got to about a milimeter into preparing disk to install and it never continued. I shut it off and rebooted and it is on now. Thanks

Sorry to hear about you problems. You have taken steps to resolve it and can not. If it were me, i would take the macbook pro to the apple store and let them sort it out. I am assuming it is fairly new? Apple warranty will cover it for the first year.
Maybe someone here has other suggestions?

  • External hard drive corruption issues

Hey folks. Really not sure what the best place would be for my question, but I'll try here.
I have a 4 year old LaCie external HD with a 160GB capacity. It stores my iPhoto and iTunes libraries for my iBook, along with a few other bits and pieces.
About a year ago, I noticed some of my files were corrupted and couldn't be played. Whenever I tried to open one of those files, the drive would start knocking and whatever program was trying to access the file would need to be Force Quit. Hoping to solve the issue, I moved the data,(or course, getting stuck on corrupted files along the way) erased and reformatted the drive and moved the data back. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem.
I have the data backed up on another, newer external drive, but I'm wondering if there's a way to isolate the bad sectors in the old drive so they can't be written to anymore? Should I use Disk Utility and repair the disk?
I know the drive's old and could fail at any time, but I'd like to keep using it as long as possible. Also, when it does finally fail, could I just purchase another hard drive and place it in the enclosure? I suppose I should also note that the FireWire 400 ports don't work on the enclosure. I'm sure it's not a defect, as I accidentally dropped the drive shortly after I'd purchased it. That fall is probably the cause of the corruptions as well =/
The USB port works fine and I haven't been able to test the FireWire 800.
Thanks for any advice y'all have!
    ~Lyssa

Your drive sounds very sick. I am not sure how likely it is but I would be concerned about your OS becoming seriously corrupted and possibly unbootable as a result of continuing to use this bad external drive.
It would be better if you could test it connected to a non-critical computer.
Do you know the drive specification? - not the make of the box.
Many drives self-repair and also communicate likely future difficulties to the OS but eventually you come to the end of this process.
I am not sure if disk utilities any longer map out bad sectors. Years ago I used a mounting screw that was too long and damaged the magnetic surface. In those days you could manually map out the bad sectors. I then put partitions each side of the mapped out sectors and continued to use the drive for many years.
More recently I had a drive with an intermittent power connection. However even after repairing this and reformatting the drive was never very reliable.
Good drives are relatively inexpensive. You could try a new drive in your box. I always advise buying server quality drives normally identified by a 5 year guarantee. I prefer Western Digital but Seagate also make reliable drives.

  • IPhoto 6 has become corrupt and I have lost 50 amended images

This is my second post re a major/ serious corruption issue I have with iPhoto 6
Within my library I have 50 images that have had multi amendments made and each amendment has been saved as an image revision (e.g. Image6 when 6 changes had been made)
I came to use some imges this week and found that the thumbnails in the relevant iPhoto6 folder show the correct 'amended' image - however on clicking the very original photo appears (e.g. image 1)
This is a serious issue as I sell these images as my business
I have back ups but im still confused how this has happened (I have not used revert to original at any time)
My apple specialist has tried a rebuild but the problem remains
    Its not on all images
Any ideas? Anyone know a UK based iPhoto speciliast available for hire?
    thank you

Note that you are posting in the iPhoto '08 forum and that answers for fixing library issues in iPhoto '08 may be different than doing the same fix in iPhoto 6 - it is safer to post in the correct forum - iPhoto 6 - http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=143
Within my library I have 50 images that have had multi amendments made and each amendment has been saved as an image revision (e.g. Image6 when 6 changes had been made)
Since iPhoto does not have either a save or a save as capability it is important that you describe how you did the amendments and how you created the revised images - e. g. image1 to image6
In iPhoto all edits are applied to the image and the name remains - the only possibly way to accomplish what you say using iPhoto alone is to duplicate and rename the image prior to editing and then it is impossible for iPhoto to link the duplicated & renamed image back to the original image - as far as iPhoto is concerned both (or all 7 in your example) images are separate and have no relationship to each other

  • Data Corrupted when using CREATE AS SELECT * FROM over DB LINK

    Hi ,
I wonder if anyone has suffered a simillar issue as this:
I have a DB Link Between a 10gR1 (Base install not patched) database on Windows 2003, and a 10gR2 (with latest Patch Database ) on Sun Solaris. The 10.1 DB is the SOURCE 10.2 is TARGET
When using a statement like the following on the Target :
CREATE TABLE a AS SELECT * FROM TABLE a@SOURCE
The statement completes, however for some (not all) tables, the data content is seriously corrupted, I noticed this when trying to apply a UKey on the newly created table in TARGET. The data was completely messed up for around 600 out of 450000 rows, I could not easily tell which rows were messed up as it was the columns that build the UKey that were affected :-(
The same happens if I precreate the table and use INSERT /*+APPEND*/ INTO AS SELECT.... etc
I realise that using an unpatched 10.1 is not nessasarily advisable, however currently it is difficult for us to patch or upgrade the DB...
If anyone has seen this before an/or has any ideas what might be the cause , I would appreciate any help I can get.
    Cheers

The Problem Manifest itsself in that some fileds are created with incorrect Values, specificaly in easy to identify cases NULL where the original values where not NULL.

  • Acrobat printer produces corrupt typeface in output

I have Acrobat v9.4.5 installed as the default printer on my Win 7 Pro (x64) SP1 PC.  When I print some documents the typeface in the output is seriously corrupted and unreadable.  Here  is one exacmple from the NY Times website:
This is what it should look like:
I've tried the instructions for print problems in this support page:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/891/cpsid_89178.html
That may not even referncing my specific problem though, and if it is, it references \Adobe\Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest but provides Adoble.Acrobat.Dependcies.xml in the link suggested as a replacement.
Can anyone clue me in why Acrobat can't print that page as a .pdf file properly?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for sticking with me on this.  I didn't realize what a hopeless newbie I am when  it comes to Acrobat.
I wasn't actually able to follow the steps you outlined but in looking for the job change you mentioned I did find something that worked.  I'll pass it along in case it helps someone else.
What I was trying to do is print a page from an article on the NY Times website.  You saw the earlier results above.  What solved problem is after typing Ctl-P, clicking on Printer Preferences and then unchecking "Rely on system fonts only."   Presto....a readable .pdf was generated.
So thanks again for your help.  I can stop banging my head against my desk.

You have a serious corruption problem someplace, or a serious conflict with some other software that is running.
If this happens with more than one document, you can start with repalcing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
If it's isolated to a single document, see Remove minor corruption by exporting
Another very likey cause is a corrupt or poorly made font. Run a font utility to look for font problems.
Turn off any third party Plugins for ID that you might have installed. Also try turning off your font manager if you have one.
If none of this helps, you may have to reinstall ID.

  • Imovie 11 looks fine in project view but is corrupted when published

I'm a very adept user of imovie and have quickly picked up imovie11. I have made several movies that all use the same title sequence.
When I publish them (I've tried youtube, itunes, media browser and mobile me) one of them posts just as I created it. The other two have seriously corrupt opening sequences (I have a transition, text/title screen and music in the opening sequence - not complicated).
The opening sequence is scrambled... a bunch of broken horizontal images... then plays the rest of the movie just fine. Help!

You can copy and paste clips between project, but not all the settings, etc.
To reuse a title sequence, I would suggest that you take the good project. Select it in the Project Library List. Then FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Give the Duplicate a name and trim off everything but the opening sequence. You can then use this as a template when starting other projects.
If you need the sequence in an existing project, I would render the template you made above in Apple Intermediate Codec. You can then import this back into iMovie as an Event clip. Then you can use this in those existing movies.
If you are already doing it this way, let me know.

  • RAW Video & File Corruption

I am a photographer and filmmaker having serious corruptions issue with RAW photo and video files on Areca RAID arrays. RAW files (.CR2, .NEF, .DNG, etc...) are particularly affected but DSLR .MOV and Cinema DNG files are being corrupted as well.
This is happening on two systems that are identical except for the Areca controllers and drives (ARC-1880, & ARC-1882) and different drives. Originally these arrays were both RAID-3 but I converted on to RAID5 to see if the problem was corrected. The issue still persists.
I've contacted Areca for support but have not received a response.
Any advice or help would be deeply appreciated. See system specs below:

    Tony,
I do have another theory, but before I begin, I'll say Eric Bowen from ADK is an absolute uber-tech and he knows a LOT more than I ever will .
    Here goes...
What you are seeing is absolutely bizarre!
Areca cards are awesome, but their support is not that great. You might want to pose this same question on the Areca's Owners Forum on hardforum.com. There are some really experienced Areca users that frequent that forum that may recognize this particular failure mode.
Your firmware is pretty old; I updated all of my Areca's (1880 and 1882 series cards) to v1.52 a long time ago. I would suggest you do the same. Areca does not share all the "fixes" that they may do in firmware and in general newer is better.
I read a long, long time ago about some subtle incompatibilities with some drives and Areca controller cards specifically dealing with SATA NCQ support. My number one guess, and hope for you, is that you have this turned on and that by turning it off you may resolve this crazy issue.
Finally, I don't agree with Eric about only using non-Enterprise drives with Areca parity RAIDS. I've been violating that rule for too many years using WD and Hitachi drives to feel that is your only problem here. Before I ran Areca's with non-enterprise drives I did a lot of www research regarding users building 48 drive arrays using non-Enterprise drives and Areca controllers (for them Enterprise was way more expensive with that many drives in play). And personally, I've had probably a dozen Areca cards, used probably around 60 various drives in them over the years and never, never, ever lost any data. My use has been 100% RAID 5 (and some RAID 0) and while I have had varied hardware failures (5 bad drives - 3 were Enterprise and 2 were non-Enterprise), a bad RAM stick (Areca replaced on wtty. - never had any file errors at all, but the Areca error log showed about 6 events where memory ECC had to kick in to prevent a loss), a bad Areca CPU (totally cratered, but when then sent me a RMA card the drives picked right up and again, no data loss whatsoever).
Yes, Enterprise drives are recommended, but Areca's newer firmware bios settings allow you to even disable TLER completely which can result is REALLY slow array performance but NO data loss under any circumstance.
Best of luck! What you are dealing with sounds VERY frustrating!

  • Maps 3.01 - SIS file for E75 is corrupted

If you ever wondered why you can't install Maps for E75 using the file nokia_maps_3.01_09wk44_b01_s60_3.2_lm_rom.SIS, which is distributed at: Nokia Europe - Maps - Compatibility & download page, it's because the file is seriously corrupted.
According to SymbianOSv9.x SIS File Format Specification, the first 4 bytes of a SIS file must always be 0x10201A7A. Surprisingly this particular file starts with 0x0055E805 and contains 161 bytes of random data in front of a  byte sequence that appears to be the correct identification header. Way to go Nokia! Who knows what else is broken in that file?
So could you please find the person(s) who broke that file & put it online and hang them high? Preferrably from some sensitive body parts. Then fix the damn file, and fix the Maps Updater, too. Ok?
    Thank You.

  • Late 2013 Corrupt HD problems

Ok, this is going to be lengthy and technical. Let's start with the initial report
I was given a 13-inch Late 2013 MBP that had crashed and failed to reboot. Apparently, she was working on a document, looked away, and saw the screen black out peripherally. She assumed it was the display sleeping, but instead, the computer had dropped to a console with the text, "No bootable device, insert boot disk". She attempts to restart it, but ends up being greeted with the grey 'prohibted' symbol after half a minute while the spinner continues.
So here's what I've found so far:
Using DIsk Utility in recovery is useless. The system can't even read SMART data, and fails with 'internal error' when trying to do anything to the disk.
The partition map is partially hosed. I can still detect all the volumes on the disk (as I can still boot into recovery, and can select to boot system or installation with alt/option) but booting into the system or installation fails with unknown volume types.
The filesystem is dirty, due to forced power off. The journal is probably corrupted, as journal replays fail. This means I can't mount the volume at all, even if I can see it despite partition map errors.
Target Disk Mode to another MBP, early 2013. On the volume: Disk Utility stalls during 'Verify Disk' at 'Checking filesystem', and stalls during 'Repair Disk' at a 'Checking extended attributes file'. On the disk: Disk Utility reports no problems with the partition map, but fails to repair with "Error: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size."
Attempts to dump the disk to image have failed. Doesn't even start in recovery, and stalls with zero progress in target disk.
Anyone know if this is potentially related to the new PCIe flash Apple is using? Seems like a pretty serious corruption to take down the partition map (I can attribute the journal error to unsafe shutdown). No software installation recently. Bootcamp was not attempted at any point, so I can rule out any partition editing from that.

I'm not particularly concerned with the data on the computer. It's been backed up recently, so data-loss is a non-issue. If I really wanted to, I can bit-bang the filesystem to invalidate the journal and mount it to get data off. I doubt very many at the genius bar would be familiar enough with the spec for the HFS+ filesystem, or have the low-level tools to pull it off.
I'm more interested to know if anyone else has these issues, and, if I were to get it exchanged, should expect this issue to occur again.

  • Help - odd file system corruption.

I have something very worrying going on on my system. The contents of an important folder is being listed differently in 3rd party applications vs the Finder. Apps which use a non-OS file browser cannot see the up to date contents (its an important project I'm currently working on), instead they only list folders from months ago which are now long gone and don't show the current true contents at all. Eg Cinema 4D's Content Browser can't see the current files correctly, but it can just fine via the OS Open/Save dialog.
Even worse is that Chrono Sync has exactly the same problem. When it syncs it correctly lists some of the current files that I'm working on, but in the Anylise section, manually drilling down to my working project folder again shows the incorrect contents!
I have copied the directories to a new HD but even THEY show the same errors when not viewing the contents directly with Lion file browsers***
I can remember once when I first saw this in Cinema 4D I immediately checked in the Finder - and the Finder showed the wrong contents too !- I refreshed the Finder window by clicking a different folder and back to the working directory which then updated before my eyes to the correct contents.
How can I fix this? It seems like there is an immenent serious corruption about to happen to my files and/or disk. Disk Utility shows no errors, nothing to repair. Can/should I use Diskwarrior or some other repair app. Help!
(***I just remembered that I used CCC in block level copy mode so this might account for why the corruption has been transferred to the new drive. I am copying the working directory to the new disk using drag nd drop in the Finder to see if that helps. However I still need the underlying corruption in my User folder repaired)

Yes, I have quite a comprehensive backup strategy in place (involving a Drobo for nightly CCC backups, a CCC nightly bootable disk clone and TM for hourly backups). The Block Copy is for the bootable disk. The nightly Drobo backups are done with vanila CCC file copying,
Disk Util does not find any problems, neither did Disk Warrior. SMART is all OK.
However as I said, the problem is present on one of the backups as well which has put the integrity of the rest of my backups in doubt. also I have tried a direct Finder copy to a new drive (instead of CCC block copy) but the problem persisted.
I have however come up with a temporary fix: I moved the current folder to the trash, navigated to the parent directory using Cinema 4D's Content Browser wherein it 'saw' the ancient folder once again. This errant folder was now also visible in the Finder since the original folder (which has the same name) was now in the trash. I renamed it and moved it to the trash too. Then put the original folder from the trash back into its parent directory and emptied the trash removing the errent folder for good. It seems that did the trick of updating whatever caches or databases were broken and all my apps can correctly see the correct folder and its contents again.
This 'historical' version of the folder was being linked to by 3rd party file browsers I think because in the past it had the same name in the same location as the current folder. Where and how the OS got confused is still a mystery. Does it keep different file system records for the finder vs other apps?
I am not 100% convinced this is a true solution though as there may well be a deeper problem afoot.
I would like to see some kind of error/fixed message from Disk Util just so I know the OS is on top of this problem. As it stands my Mac thinks everythin is A-OK.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Software corrupting other programs or the OS

    A question for experts:
In the context of earlier serious corruption of my iMac (now cured) unconected with this utility, here is part of a conversation wirh a Mac software company whose site states that its product is not yet fully compatible with M.Lion:
Question: "How convinced are you that if I avoid the problem area, Snapz Pro X (Movie) will not corrupt my Mac?"
Answer: "I am convinced because software does not work that way. Everything is in its own little space. Just don't install the the AmbrosiaAudioSupport kernel extension (KEXT) and you won't have a problem."
I know that the Mac's OS has for some time had a feature whereby each program lives in its own area, protected from interference from other programs. But does this mean:
    That the code for every (eg., application or utility) program is protected from corruption in another program;
    Or that the whole OS is protected in that way?;
    Or both?
The answer I got seems rather idealistic. Is it?
    Thanks.

If that program isn't supported, don't install it. In Mountain Lion, Apple included sandboxing, and every app works so that doesn't affect to the other applications. The kext is an extension, and a problem with that can freeze Mountain Lion or that appears a kernel panic.
Apple has got all of their apps sandboxed, the same for the App Store. You can install Lion if you need the program

  • Security update 2013 has corrupted wireless trackpad and keyboard

Security update 2013 has corrupted my wireless trackpad and keyboard.  The wireless trackpad will select and highlight text on its own, will secondary click on its own, will highlight and drag text on its own, etc. It is basically possessed!
Security update 2013 has also seriously corrupted my wireless keyboard.  The wireless keyboard will randomly jump back in the sentence or to earlier paragraph or worse just select and delete all that I have written as I am typing! It is very frustrating and is rendering my workstation useless!
Please help me. Is there someway to update/reset bluetooth? Why is this happening after I updated?

Similar keyboard conniptions on my MBP after the recent Snow Leopard update. Obviously, it being a MBP, this wasn't a wireless issue, but directly after installing the update, the keyboard refused to type a word. I could place the cursor with the mouse but the keyboard was totally non-reactive.
Re-booted it. Didn' t work. Ran Disk Utitlity, verified the disk, verified and repaired disk permissions and then did another restart. After 10-15 secs of further inactivity, the keyboard started working again.
There seems to be a problem relating to keyboards on the most recent Snow Leopard update. Disk Utility and a couple of restarts seems to have ironed out the wrinkle.

  • Corrupt hard drive due to sims 3

I installed the sims 3 for my little brother, the game ran well then when he went to quit it went all black. I had to thrn it off by the button and ran a disk utility check. My hardcover is now corrupt due to the volume not being the right number. Is this because of the game it self or the fact I had to turn it off by the button? This is happened 3 times now and scared the 3rd time it won't fix when I try and fix it. Do I uninstall the sims also before trying to use the disk to fix it?

I know. But would it be better if I uninstalled the sims before I use the install DVD Isit a serious corrupt? and I cannot get my cd for two weeks due to it being at Uni could his also make it worse leaving it for 2 weeks? Sorry to sound like a donut.
