Serious Desktop Overload

Some help here would be great...
I tried today to transfer a Aperture Slideshow from my iMac to my Macbook Pro via firewire.
I read up how to do it and seemed to have everything set up right with Sharing - I was able to access the laptop in Finder on the desktop, but a box came up saying that I didn't have the right permissions.
So, to test whether I could transfer a basic file I dragged across a small Excel document to the laptop Desktop.
It was copied across to the laptop alright - just 31,000 times. YES 31,000 copies of an Excel document are now on my desktop!
As I am sure you can imagine, this has slowed down the laptop a wee bit!
It's totally slowed up so that any keystroke takes about 30 minutes to register. I only know that 31,000 copies went across because I accessed the laptop from the iMac and tried to delete them with no luck.
I have of course tried shutting down and restarting but to no avail. And also restarting pressing the space bar, but again no luck.
The good news is that I have recently bought the iMac so everything on the laptop is in the iMac and backed up to Time Machine, so if needs be I can wipe the laptop. But I'd rather not if possible.
Anyway, does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Are you sure, you were in Target-Modus?
From the help menu "Transfer files between two computers":
Connect the two computers with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk in target disk mode:
If the computer is off, start it up while holding down the T key.
If the computer is on, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and then click Target Disk Mode.
When the computer has started up, a disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash.
While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.
On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the cable.
If your computer is not reacting anymore: push the power button some seconds, until your computer is shutting down. Then restart the computer with the overpopulated desktop. Fire up your Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and enter (copy and paste):
rm ~/Desktop/*.xls
hit <enter> and you are done, hopefully. Two things could happen, if it is not working: the extension for an excel-file is not *.xls correct it to the right extension. Or you are not allowed to do this, because or permission problems. In this case you have to precede this command with sudo and enter your password (you will not see anything, but enter your password nevertheless and hit <enter>)
Hope this helps

  • Commercial Desktop applications in Java

    Hey all,
Could someone give me some good examples of commercial desktop applications (except IDE's) written in Java?
A friend of mine needs to convince his boss that Java is a feasible language for serious desktop applications.
(It's so hard to convince some people that Java is not just 'web development'...)
    Thanks a lot,

Millions of dollars are traded each day with this program. But you can't use/see/try it without a security login etc... So you'll just have to trust me. :-)

  • Windows 8.1 Update is Garbage

I tried to install the Windows 8.1 update. After 3 hours I found that I only had a blank screen with no keyboard or mouse response. I called into tech support at Microsoft and after waiting and waiting on hold I was told that it might be a video
driver issue. Meantime, I now have a machine that can no long boot. After several reboots and hitting F8 constantly I was able to get the machine to restore the original operating system, Windows 8 Pro. Then I found out that it did something to 2 of my usb
ports that now no longer work. I have 3 ports on my Dell XPS 15 and only one of them works now. I cannot find any errors or anyway to reinitialize the 2 ports. Any suggestions? I should have never tried to run this upgrade what a complete waste of time, and
what a complete piece of crap update. Do Not install this update!!!!

There seems to be an ongoing theme:  People who are comfortable with undertaking in-depth reconfiguration of their operating system and can rely on their large accumulated base of knowledge from past releases can get Windows 8 to
    work.
For me Win 8.1 - the fresh install I mentioned up above - is still working every bit as solidly as Windows 7 did for me:  no crashes, no glitches.  I give it hard daily serious desktop use.  Last bootup
was more than a week ago.  So far the longest stretch I've gone between reboots mandated by Windows Updates or software installs has been 17 days.  It's never crashed.
But I'm under no misconception, even though I've written a book on how to do it,
that Windows 8.1 is an easy system for the masses to use.  With 38 years computer engineering experience I can tell you honestly that it taxed me to my limits to turn it into something with which I can get my work done.  Windows 7
took some skill as well to get running right, but not nearly as much as Windows 8.
Meanwhile, Microsoft does things like not even bother to document it (try clicking a link in an event log dialog, for example).  There comes a price for reducing support:  Fewer people get it to work well for them.  Fewer people can write
good drivers for it.  Fewer people can use it.
Those who know what they're doing worry that Microsoft has lost the very ability to continue to engineer Windows at the professional level.  This version certainly doesn't do
anything better than its predecessor to make it worth putting up with all the negative changes.

  • IMac 2.33 vs. Mac Pro 2.66

I know this might seem like a no brainer but here goes. I am looking to set up a second rig and want it to be cost efficient. The iMac 2.33 is about $3300 with three gigs of RAM, the upgraded graphics card and a 500 GB hard drive. And it comes with that great big monitor.
The Mac Pro 2.66 with 2 GB of RAM, the standard graphics (same speed as iMac upgrade) and a 500 GB harddrive is about $3,000. but once i throw in the 23" monitor it goes to 4 grand.
Does anyone have any oppinions on this? Should I try configuring the MacPro 2.0? That would save me $300. Is there a performacne boost using ECC memory? Is a MacPro 2.0 with 4 GB memory better for Logic than a 2.66 with 2 GB?
these questions are a bit beyond me.

stephen, I think the thing with upgrading the graphics card is, it would give better performance for people working with FCP or intensive photo work where there are very large amounts of video data needing to be shunted around, such as multiple video streams. I realise you always work with video, but when we logic users say we work with video, it just means playing back one quicktime video at a time, it's not what video or photo people mean when they say it.. so you really should be fine. just remember to always encode your video to quicktime DV which doesn't require any software decoding and you'll be fine. that said, it's only a matter of a hundred bucks or so to upgrade that card, so it can't hurt to get it if you're at all concerned.
and yes, the MBP you refered to is the very same that I'm finding quite a bit more powerful than my G5. bear in mind that my G5 is not a quad, just a dual core 2gig. however, at an apple demo session I went to, a MBP did compare pretty favourably against a quad G5 anyway. I don't think you'd find it much of a problem to work with, it certainly would be no different to the imac you're looking at.
as for RAM, how much do you have in your G5? as you do orchestral stuff, you should absolutely bump the RAM on the MBP or the imac to the max 3GB. I've only got 2 because I couldn't justify the expense of getting 3 when I bought my machine, and I figured I'd see how it went anyway. so far so good. but I haven't done any projects where I've loaded in track after track of vienna yet. just a few things with some ivory piano, a few tracks of vienna strings and harp, and it handled it all fine. when I've done stuff using a lot of samples on the G5 I always found that around 4GB was the sweet spot.. things seemed to work as well as they would get, even after I tried sticking in a couple of extra gig that I borrowed to try it out. so 3GB it's not too far off that, and given that these machines are really alarmingly powerful anyway, they seem to be able to grunt their way through it regardless.. my MBP still surprises me with its paltry 2GB..
I can understand how after years of having a powerbook 17" you could be turned off the idea of getting another portable. it's hard to imagine holding something in your hands that looks and feels similar to the very underwhelming machine you have now, and to imagine that it could actually give your G5 a run for its money.. it's weird but it's true. my powerbook can only manage a handful of audio tracks, one or two exs, maybe another light synth or two, some EQ and if you ask it very nicely, maybe a single space designer, if it's a small setting. or, get rid of all of that and run one instance of sculpture instead, before it chokes. this is a 1.33gig PB G4 12" btw.. I'm writing on it right now, and I love it as my little email machine, but any serious logic work is quite far out of its reach. if your PB is the fastest one they ever made at 1.67Ghz (I think), well it's not much more of a performer than my little guy.. but when I move over to my little PBs big brother, I can't tell you what a different ballgame it is. everything about it feels like a serious desktop machine while running logic. check my recent posts to see the kind of songs I could work on with it in terms of plug ins and so on. I've yet to have to freeze anything...
so back to your shopping.. you mentioned the joy of having the 2 monitor logic experience. well, getting a 17" MBP to replace your powerbook and then connecting a 2nd monitor will give you that experience, as well as plenty of performance, as well letting you keep the concept of a portable writing machine. it will feel like having your G5 on your lap, you will be freaked out I can tell you that much right now..
and when you're set up in your studio, just use a wireless keyboard and mouse, and put the MBP up on a stand like an icurve or something (which I use) and it can just sit there being your second screen, next to the 23" cinema display or whatever you get, and also secretly be the hidden computer that is running the show. people will wonder where the giant computer tower is... surely you can't be running that huge arrangement in logic and that video playback from a laptop???
or, you can also go for the 24" imac. same performance as far as I can tell as long as you upgrade to the 2.33 chip, and oh boy does that screen look nice. I presume you can still add a second screen to that machine and use it for your video playback, so the imac screen could be a giant playground for logic. not a bad setup up at all.
as for interoperability of your logic sessions. AFAIK, as long as you are on the same version of logic, ie 7.2x on the G5 and on the intel mac, you can open songs on either machine no problemo. to be honest I haven't been able to try it because I've been away from my G5 setup, on the other side of the planet for a few months now, due to sad family reasons.. hence my need to get a MBP portable setup in the first place. anyway from what I've read as long as you're on the same version of logic, things should inter-open just fine.
anyway hope this helps. I think my best advice to you would be to find yourself an apple dealer that is going to grant you the time to come in and test out a couple of systems. it's not impossible to find an apple store that will either already have logic pro installed on machines or will do it for you. bring in an external drive with some of your work projects, your logic key, and go ahead and run them on a 24" imac and on a 17" MBP. make sure your hard drive has your exs sound library on it, and also remember that 3rd party plug ins won't be available. but if you've got projects that run mostly using built in logic stuff and that have some video files, you can see what you're getting yourself into. as you are in the states, there'd have to be an apple store with a pro audio genius somewhere, they'd be crazy to not have one in LA! you could give them a call, talk to the 'genius' and explain you're a working film composer and you absolutely need to be able to test your own projects on the systems before you buy. another possibility but a little more fiddly is to make a clone of your system drive on to a big external FW drive. then also add your sound library and some projects to this drive. you could then try booting from this drive on the imac and MBP in store, and if it works, you'd have your own logic setup and all of your plug ins right there with you.. don't forget iloks of course, if you need them. but I'd check with a 'genius' first.. it's possible that an intel mac won't boot into a cloned system from a G5.
either way, by trying out your own projects you'll be able to see if the machines are going to do what you need them to do. but if you can't swing it to go test drive, my feeling would be that they are both going to be able to give you what you want anyway, particularly if you've been suffering trying to run logic on your PB for so long..
happy shopping, let us know what you end up doing.
oh and one last thing.. you haven't mentioned what your i/o needs are. I doubt you are going to say that you need 24 channels of i/o with super low latency, but if you do.. remember that the imac and MBP limit you to firewire both for audio interfaces and external hard drives. in most cases this is absolutely no problem whatsover. but some users might be tempted to go for a mac pro desktop because of the fact that you can add lots of fast internal storage for projects and sound library, and the PCI or firewire for audio interfaces, thus spreading the load. this probably doesn't apply to what you want to do.. and also, if you are wanting to work between 2 systems, you probably want your project drives to be fast external firewire anyway.
ok any more questions, fire away.
    all the best,
    antonio

  • How do I get  CR-XI R2 to install?

What a nightmare!  I was advised to update my CR-IX R1 (in the hopes that this would help with a failed Active-X call).  I eventually determined that I could go from R1 to R2 by downloading a file 14-00806-085.zip, and running this.  I removed R1 (using the Windows Remove program), then  unzipped the file, (which gave me two files, 14-00806-085.part1.exe, and 14-00806-085.part2.rar.  I ran the .exe file, and it seemed to go fine, finally giving me a message that the install had completed successfully.  Prior to this message, Windows (?) had gone off and configured the program.  Now, I attempted to open CR-XI, which went as far as the opening screen before this same window popped up, saying "Please wait while Windows configures Crystal Reports XI Release 2".  It got as far as "Gathering required information", then hung indefinitely.  Clicking on the "cancel" button "undid" what it had done to that point, upon which it started all over again to run through this "configuration" process.  It proved impossible to get out of this whole sequence in any way sort of physically shutting down the machine.
OK, so now I went back to the Forums to seek advice.  What I found was that I should have shut down my virus checker before doing the install.  Fine, I go back and shut down the virus checker, remove the the CR-XI R2 install, and try reinstalling it.  Now it won't install at all.  Back to the Forum.  I need to remove the install manually, instructions for which are in a KB article with a link on the Forum.  Link doesn't work.  No KB article.  Well, if you "edit your registry and add the following entries manually into the registry, this fixed it for me"...  Come on!  One shouldn't have to get involved in manual registry entries to install a program!  Aha! you can't have any prior versions of Crystal on the machine.  I have CR-10 installed.  (Why didn't you tell me in advance?)  OK, remove CR-10, and the current attempted install of CR-XI.  Virus checker off...check!  lets try one more time.  (By now we have wasted 5 hours on this nonsense).  Now the install gets as far as an effusive thanking me for choosing Crystal Reports  (you sucker!) and runs up to the point of "Copying new files.  File: BusinessObjects.Enterprise.Desktop.Overload.dll, Directory: Size:40960."  And here it hangs.  (It says it has 402 minutes left to go).
I checked on the Forums again, and noted that one fellow was finally reduced to wiping his drive completely and reinstalling Windows and all the programs in order to get out of  these endless loops.
I am just a simple innocent amateur.  I don't have a degree in CS, and frankly I don't think I should need one in order to update my software.  I am reluctant to get into editing my registry directly, as I am aware of all the dire warnings about how one can immobilize one's computer entirely doing this.  (I no longer have Crystal; I don't want to lose the whole damn computer).  And I am even less enthusiastic about the prospect of reformatting my hard drive just to get out of a screwed-up installation process.  I obviously got myself into this situation by virtue of lack of guidance (eg. not knowing that I had to uninstall CR-10 also).  Could somebody now please provide me with guidance in how to get out of it gracefully?

    Hi Guys,
This is quite the story.... The problem is we rely on msiexec.exe to install our product and generate all the registry keys, register our dll's and copy everything it needs into the correct locations and find all of the dependencies we need to run. We also assume that the system is up to date and no issues have crept into the system from other third party software installs.
I too have seen this within our support group on a Senior engineers PC here and I believe what he did to resolve the problem was to do a repair install of his Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007. I don't remember which one it was now. In his case it was the Office installer that would start up each time he tried to run Crystal.
The main issue is we can't reproduce the problem, if we can't reproduce the issue we can't debug it.
If anyone else reads this posting when or if the installer prompts you to enable install logging, CR 2008 does this now with a check box but for CR XI R2 it may not be an option. You can enable logging by starting the installer from the command line and using the MSIEXEC logging switch. I don't recall what it is not but is available on MS web site. Do this on both a working a none working PC and then update this post and I'll get an e-mail notification and I'll contact you for the logs.
These issues are rare but they do happen and so far no one has been able to find a consistant cause or solution. They all make sense after the fact when then have been fixed but no common cause.
So far its been caused by:
    Anti-vurus software
    Firewall software
    Windows Office
OEM versions of Windows operating systems ( Dell and Compac that I've dealt with )
And other various third party software
Also the order of third party installs have been found to be the cause also
    Things to try next time:
Repair install all software that is currently installed before installing again.
A MUST is to stop all programs and anti-virus and firewalls.
Copy the install locally, do not run from a network share or DVD/CD drive.
MUST be a local PC administrator.
    Install .NET 1.1, 2.0 framework and possibly 3.0. and 3.5. 1.1 is a must.
Check with your local IT guys to make sure they have not modified your Administrators Profile and put some restictions on it.
    Thank you

  • Kde and networkmanager issues

Since recently I have had issues with kde (4.6.3) and networkmanager.
First, the latest version of networkmanager (0.8.998-3) and the latest version of the networkmanagement plasmoid does not work, while it looks like they should, nothing happens when trying to connect. That could be due to permissions and something consolekit-related? In any case, just updating does not work (for me at least), so I had to put those packages on hold.
Second, since today, the networkmanagement plasmoid claims that my wlan inteface was "disabled by hardware", and thus does not show it as connected even though it is, and does not show a list of accesspoints to connect to.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/anderslund/5769032074/
Any hints to solve those problems would be greatly appreciated!
-- mod edit: read the Forum Etiquette and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code [jwr] --

After upgrading two days ago, my network stopped working. Well, First I should say that I got a black desktop upon loading, some things still worked though. Yakuake I could use to launch programs. When I launched systemsettings and unticked enable desktop effects, I got the default background wallpaper, but no panel or folder view. I track down the offending package to kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement-1:git20110524-1. I downgraded, and I got my desktop back. However, the KDE plasma applet now reported 'invalid state' for both my wireless and wired interfaces. I found the offending package for that to be kdebase-workspace-4.6.3-2. Downgrading to kdebase-workspace-4.6.3-1 solve the problem. So I had a double whammy here with this upgrade. However, though my main user account seems stable enough, I notice some crashes with konqueror w/ webkit, and systemsettings in desktop themes. I am particularly having serious desktop and software crashes with other user accounts, far more than my main user account. I tried deleting .kde4/ in the other accounts but it has not stabilized them. My main user account is usable, the others not so. My main system is a Sony Vaio w/ Radeon HD 4200 graphics. Before the upgrade, my system and all accounts were stable...

  • Why AWT apps are faster than Swing apps?

I have written applications using both AWT and Swing. While running under Windows, I feel that AWT apps are much faster and smoother. In contrast, Swing apps fare terribly. Regardless, I can not go back to AWT because of thier limited capabilities.
I love Java APIs, it is great for programmer. But what about the consumers? Consumers do not care whether it is written in Java or Visual C++?
I am having a mid-"programming" crisis. I do not want to but, but would be forced to use VC++ for desktop apps abandoning Java.
I would like to know if you are a serious desktop programmers, what is your motivation for using Java, not VC++ or something?
    Thanks.

well, for me, it's that one it's Platform Independent. and that does come in handy when your work uses macs instead of normal PCs. Second, it's free to use, unlike VC++ and Pseudo Code (Visual Basic), you don't have to pay unbeleivably large sums of money to get a good compiler. And then there's the whole "Swings Apps are Slower", yes they are, however, if you program them write, they only take a while to initialize, once that is done they run as fast as any Native Program unless you have a tremendous amount of calculations and dynamic generation of components. And also the no Excecutables, true, and... not true, creating a Jar File is almost the same as making a making an EXE, only Jar Files are... platform independent.... and unlike C++ which gives you enough rope to run around the world three times, jump over the moon and hang yourself for actually using it, Java is a clean programming language, not a whole lot of those nasty characters and styles that ugly up your code. at least these are the reasons why i pick Java as the language to come out on top of all others.

  • Stange TCP timeout

    Hi there,
I am noticing some strange behaviour with the TCP Open Connection VI. For some reason it is totally ignoring any timeout value (including the default unwired state of 60000 ms) and giving an error after approx 1 second (Error 63: network connection refused).
I dont actually have a listener waiting, but surely it should only give the error message after the timeout period is over? My question is not how to get it working, but rather why does this error occur after 1 s?
Any one experience similar behaviour, or am I misinterpreting the LabVIEW help?
ps: am using LabVIEW 7.0 for Win32

TCP/IP is a 3-way handshake protocol eventhough you do not see that on
the application level. You are most probably trying this out on a local
machine or a local network only. What happens in the TCP/IP socket
driver on the other side when you try
to connect is that it checks its
internal tables and then when no listener has been registered it sends
back a negative acknowledgment informing the requesting socket that no
connection could be established. This certainly is very fast and happens
in less than a second unless you are connected over a very slow dialup
line and trying to reach a similar slow remote site on the other side of
the world or have some serious network overload problems.
Once the socket receives the connection rejection message LabVIEW
correctly decides to not wait any longer and returns the error you see.

I'm Back to SnowLeopard. Lion is a joke for serious Desktop work.
I wonder what goes on after being there since Apple ][.
BTW since my original Macintosh (1984) until Yosemite everything still works .... since intel and perhaps system X both hardware and software need constant replacements ...

Any ideas. I still like them and they sound great. I plugged them into My macBook pro and a windy sound comes out.

  • Need advice on choosing laser printer for use w/Illustrator

I know there are a few other threads out there on printers but I'm hoping to get answers specific to my situation. I need a laser printer that isn't astronomically priced and as big as a warehouse. Basically we send all our stuff to outside printers, but need a good printer for proofing our work. Currently using an HP 4200n supplied to us (4 artists) by our company. We'd like to get a printer just for the artists, which will give us better quality than this one which seems a basic office printer.
We're also printing on basic office paper - what type paper would you recommend for graphics to look clean and sharp?
    Criteria are:
    1 - higher resolution - up to 1200dpi
2 - color preferred but not necessary
3 - wysiwyg so it will match what we're doing on screen (95% of our work is grayscale graphics)
4 - not so costly the company will refuse to purchase for us (initial cost and supplies)
Thanks to all who reply - also like to hear what to stay away from.

To Jacob's advice, I would add...
    1. If you have the choice between genuine Adobe PostScript and a third-party emulation, go for the former. Unfortunately, this will cost you more money.
    2. Unless you are dealing only with small-sized printed pieces -- that is to say, smaller than letter-size -- you really need to consider a large-format (e.g., tabloid size) laser. If your laser maxes out at letter-size (or legal-size) and your printed piece trims to letter-size, you'll need to reduce output to print out things like spreads, bleeds, printer's marks, etc. And if you can't proof at 100 percent (i.e., actual size), that's a huge disadvantage. Yes, you could print things out in sections and tape them together, but that will get old fast. Unfortunately, a tabloid-size PostScript laser will really set you back some bucks... not to mention some serious desktop real estate.
If you are budget-constrained, you should probably not rule out inkjet options.

  • Authlessanonymous & provider commands (user preferences?)

    Hi,
I have a question about the desktop for authlessanonymous.
When not logged in to the portal (i.e. being user authlessanonymous) and I click on a provider command, e.g. minimize channel, then I get a serious desktop error before the channel gets actually minimized. Is this normal behaviour?
It seems normal to me that the providercommands (minimize, maximize, detach,close,...) or some kind of "user preferences". Since authlessanonymous user is actually "a user account everyone uses", we cannot really speak of user preferences. So it would be normal behaviour to not have those buttons in the channel frame, I think. Except perhaps the help button.
So I better modify my jsp files (providercommands.jsp or so) and not show those buttons there.
    Or am I wrong?

What you describe is correct. The desktop for the authlessanonymous user should be read only. The way to configure this is to remove all of the links for "content" ,"layout", "theme", etc. Also, remove all minimize, maximize, detach, restore, etc. buttons from the frames of the channels. This can be done by setting the minimizable, maximizable, etc. properties for all of the channles for the authlessanonymous user.
Notice that this is already preconfigured for the authlessanonymous desktop when you install the sample portal. There is a display profile and a custom desktop type that are assigned to the authlessanonymous user. These handle the settings that I mention above. If you add more channels to the authlessanonymous desktop, then they must be added in the same manner as other channels so that the editing capabilities are not accessible.

  • Something going seriously wrong with my install of CC. The CC desktop app won't show what apps I have, and when I select that tab the wheel spins for a while and then the app quits. I am running Yosemite 10.

Something is seriously wrong with my install of CC desktop. The icon won't show up in the upper bar as it always has. When I start it from th finer it starts, but when I select the Apps tab is spins for a while and then quits. Tried re-installing it from Adobe downloads. Same behaviour. What's up?

Rdgates55 have you utilized the solutions listed in App doesn't open | Progress wheel spins continually?  If so what version of the Creative Cloud Desktop application are you using?

  • I overloaded my desktop with thousands of pictures and now I can't click on them to delete. What to do?

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If all or most of the files have a common extension, say "jpg" or "tiff", and no other file
on your desktop has that extension, you could try removing them in a terminal window:
startup up Terminal (in Utilities), then execute (typed on individual lines, after the prompt,
    followed by enter/return):
    cd Desktop
    rm *.jpg
(Use whatever extension is appropriate, if jpg isn't.)  Of course, this would remove ALL
of the jpgs on your desktop, so be careful.
