Serious error detected

I have a G5 and I'm running CS3 with 10.4.11. In-Design has been crashing very frequently. The error message says: "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InDesign to recover work in any unsaved InDesign documents." I have tried re-starting numerous times and have tried re-installing InDesign. After re-installing, it is running faster but is still crashing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You may have a corrupt file or a bad font, or any number of other things. Does ID actually crash? If so, you should post the crash report on Pastebin.com, then post a link to it here so someone (probably John) can take a look and tell you more. • Why is my InDesign CS4 crashing with serious error detected?

    Hi.
    Can anyone help please?
I am also having this problem. I have a MAC 10.6.8 and am trying to use indesign CS4, but I keep crashing due to a serious error being detected.
I have no idea what this could be.
The action that seems to trigger it is if I try to place multiple images in to a grid format by holding down cmd+shift, however I have also recently installed new fonts in my public library from dafont.
Here is the link to my pastebin crash report > Crash Report - MSADMIN - Pastebin.com
Any help would be so appreciated!
    Thank you in advance.

One of the images causes an error during place.
The error is not handled correctly before InDesign continues with the next place.
At that point a security mechanism steps in and invokes the "protective shutdown".
Fonts are probably not involved, unless your images are actually placed InDesign files, EPS or alike.
You can try to place the images individually, one of them should bring up an error dialog.

  • A serious error has been detected and Adobe EPIC_APP cannot continue

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional installed as part of a legal copy of CS3 Web on a Dell Lattitude D830 with Vista Business SP1. I have been using Acrobat without a problem until the latest update (8.1.2). After the installation I now get "A serious error has been detected and Adobe EPIC_APP cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again".
PS I opened Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other programs in the suite and do not have a problem. A search on the forums and Google shows other people with the same problem but no solution. Any suggestions?

An answer I found on Yahoo seems to solve the problem. I'm leaving it here in case someone else has the same problem:
    Uninstall.
    Reboot.
Install with Admin privileges ( right-click on setup.exe >Properties>Compatability Tab> Select Run as Admin)
Run it at least once from an admin account so it has access to Shell32.dll and can set the proper settings.

  • "SERIOUS ERROR HAS BEEN DETECTED" CS2

I own Creative Suite 2 (education version). I have the serial number for it, the disks, and it's registered under my name. I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.8 as my operating system.
I was using Photoshop CS2 last night with no problems. This afternoon, I tried opening a file in Photoshop, and my file wouldn't open. After a couple minutes of the spinning beach ball cursor, a notice popped up saying something like 'an error occurred' and something about me having to register it because the 30 day trial was up, and if I didn't register, I wouldn't be able to use the program anymore (but like I said, I own the copy of CS2, it's not a trial). And it gave me the option to register, but when I tried to, it didn't do anything and just brought me back to the same screen saying the same thing. So I closed it. But since I did that, Photoshop's been opening, showing all the tools and everything, but I still get the spinning beach ball cursor. And now a screen pops up after a while saying "Sorry, a serious error has been detected. To continue using Adobe Creative Suite, please reinstall the application".
So...I reinstalled Creative Suite 2. And it's STILL doing the same thing. Telling me to reinstall CS2 again. And NOW, Illustrator won't work, either. At least before I reinstalled it, Illustrator was working. I don't have the time or patience to keep reinstalling.
PLEASE HELP ME! I NEED THIS FIXED ASAP!
    Thank you in advance,
    Tiffany

    I finally found a solution!!!
Okay, so apparently, Adobe decided to stop supporting the server for CS2 back in December 2013. I did not know this.
That's what caused the problem. You have to download the programs online and use the serial numbers given here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2%5Fdownloads
It worked! And I'm back using the programs again with no problems so far.

You have a serious corruption problem someplace, or a serious conflict with some other software that is running.
If this happens with more than one document, you can start with repalcing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
If it's isolated to a single document, see Remove minor corruption by exporting
Another very likey cause is a corrupt or poorly made font. Run a font utility to look for font problems.
Turn off any third party Plugins for ID that you might have installed. Also try turning off your font manager if you have one.
If none of this helps, you may have to reinstall ID.

  • "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Now file will not open. Please Help?

I was working on an InDesign file, saved the file and tried to export it. I then got this message "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InDesign to recover work in any unsaved InDesign documents" - Return to Finder. I am now unable to open the file as the message keeps appearing at every attempt, what can I do, please help?

The recovery folder is empty and you can start ID normally, correct? But when you then try to open the file that crashed it crashes again? Is that also correct?
If it is, then it sounds like the file was damaged in the original crash. I would let ID try to recover the file once, just to be sure, though. So emepty the recovery folder again, launch ID from the Dock or the applications folder, then use File > Open... to open the file (and it won't hurt to choose the "as a copy" radio button in the dialog). If ID crashes, restart it without emptying the recovery folder one time. If it crashes again, the file is too damaged to open at all.
If it does open, immediately export to .idml, then open the .idml file and save as a new .indd with a new name (so you don't overwrite what you have now).
How much work is invloved in recreating the file? Do you have any older versions?

  • Indesign 5.5  a serious error was detected

We have Indesign 5.5 that crashes everytime it's starts wiht the error message "A serious error was detected. Please restart...".  If I remove the plugins from the Applications\Indesign\Plugins folder it starts up with no problem. I've re-installed the plugins from the installation package and the error returns. I've copied the plugins from a working computer to no avail. There are only a few plugins that fail, but would like to keep all of them working in InDesign. I've disabled Fusion 3 to see if it was preventing it from working.  Preferences files were deleted to no avail.  This is definitely a plugin issue but don't know how to resolve. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    The computer is an iMac 10.7.3 - Adobe CS5.5 - Fusion 3

We have Indesign 5.5 that crashes everytime it's starts wiht the error message "A serious error was detected. Please restart...".
Do you have a ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 7.5/en_us/InDesign Recovery/ProtectiveShutdownLog file? What're the first few lines of the most recent entry?
Do you also get a crash report? Upload it to http://pastebin.com/ and share the link with us.

  • Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Elements to shut down.

I have Adobe Premier Elements 7. When I launch the application then try to begin using it an error is presented which advises Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project.  When I click OK the program shuts down. I have tried fixes I have found on the Forum. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the program.

From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
•You MUST use an account with Administrator Privileges to run Premiere Elements
•(Doing Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 [says Encore and also for "All" versions of Premiere] will sometimes fix "odd" errors)
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.0.1 update).
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.9.4"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
•What were you doing when the problem occurred?
•What other software are you running?
•Tell us about your computer hardware. How much RAM is installed?  How much free space is on your system (C:) drive?

  • Cannot Save Document Leading to Serious Error in InDesign

    I'm using both InDesign CS3 and CS4 in Mac OS X 10.5.5
We recently got a new printer at work (Xerox 700 Digital Color Press). Since then, I've had major issues saving some of my documents. Immediately after printing a document duplexed, It says this when I try to save: "Cannot save the document. It may be opened by other applications. Close applications and try again. You may also use saveas to save it into a new document." If I cancel and do a save as to another location, InDesign immediately crashes saying a serious error has been detected and must shut down. The same thing happens if I close the document without saving and try to open that same file again. I've tried this with files located on our server as well as my hard drive with the same results.
Fortunately, restarting the computer resolves this problem (although only until I try printing it duplexed again). If I print it without duplexing, It will save just fine. No other applications I use are having this problem. As a temporary solution, I've been printing the job to the hold and then changing the settings on the printer to make the job duplex. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the entire creative suite as well as deleting the preferences and other settings, but none of those things have helped.

I managed to find a workaround to this problem. Hopefully this'll be useful for anyone else with this problem until the problem is resolved by Adobe.
After you close the document without saving, rename the file. When you open the file, it will open as a read-only document. Do a "Save As" to another location. You can then move the file you just saved to where it belongs. However, you won't be able to delete the previous file until you restart the computer.

  • Indesign getting "serious error"

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me! Of course this problems happens on deadline of my 144pg. magazine. We're using InDesign/InCopy to go back and forth with the designers (us) and the editors. Yesterday, we were updating assignments and having to unlink/relink some assignments that caused very slow opening of the .icma files. We got them fixed and to our client, then very randomly we noticed Indesign stared crashing while trying to open any of the Indesign files. They all have the error "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected..." It seemed to jump from one file to the next, and now any file we open for that magazine immediately crashes InDesign with that error.
    To date, I've tried:
Logging in as a new user
    Cleaning font cache
    Trashing Indesign preferences
    Single user rebuild
Restarting the server (where the files reside)
None of these have helped us. If anyone could possibly shed some light it I would be so appreciative!
    Many thanks,
    Wendy

Many times the protective shutdown is indeed related to something wrong with the preferences.
You might see if there is more information within the protective shutdown log. ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/[Version]/en_us/InDesign Recovery/Protective Shutdown Log that gives any additional information as to the cause of the crash.
If the keypress that Youri has mentioned are not enough, go with the manual approach.
Peter does a great run-through on where they are and what to remove here:

  • Serious error in Acrobat 8, need to re-install, doesn't fix

    Hi!
I have Acrobat 8 running on Windows XP.  It decided today to not work; no mods have been made to this program for a long time, no updates or anything weird!
The error appears when I open Acrobat, but also if I open any folder containing a PDF.  The error is "A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 Professional cannot continue.  Please re-install the application and try again."  If Okay is clicked Acrobat shuts down.  In a folder without having Acrobat open, clicking okay does not affect the folders.  I can still view PDFs.
I have (on advice of the LiveChat guy) uninstalled then re-installed it.  This did not fix it.
Does anyone know what to do for this?
    Thanks!

First, try a repair. Since it is crashing, you will have to do this from the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. If that does not work, then you can do the uninstall. If you do, be sure to delete the Acrobat folder before doing the reinstall (but after the other steps suggested). I you get it to work, you may want to consider doing the updates for security reasons. The current version is AA8.2.4.

  • Creative Suite 2-InDesign serious errors

I've installed a fresh new copy of CS2, and InDesign will not launch. Well, it will launch once in awhile, but crashes when I create or try to save a file. The various error messages are: Code 3; "Cannot add data to defaults, defaults is damaged."; "A serious error was detected." "Could not complete request because of a database error." "Restart InDesign" doesn't help.
Everything else in CS2 works fine, other that the occasional unexplained shut down that seems to be an Adobe special feature, regardless of application.
My system and fonts are clean, all other software runs fine (MSOffice, QXP, Studio8, etc). All the usual troubleshooting, preference trashing and maintenance rituals have been performed. Of course, I've also followed the exhaustive procedure for deleting everything and reinstalling the entire CS. Twice.
Hours spent with Adobe techs on the phone have proven useless. They tell me it's a problem with my system. Funny, my only problem is w/ InDesign... I've always worked in Quark, just got my first request for an InDesign project, and this is not encouraging.
Any suggestions? I quail at spending days more in Adobe's voicemail syst

I'm having the same problem. Please post solution if you find one. We erased the HD, zeroed everything, reinstalled, just CS2 and still no luck. "Serious error...Shuting down"

  • "Serious error" when launching InCopy after install

Just installed InCopy CS6 and when it is launched (for the first time) I get the following message:
"Adobe InCopy is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InCopy to recover work in any unsaved In Copy documents."
Then there is a "return to finder" button to select. Please advise!!

I'm getting the exact same error, have you come accross any solutions?

  • Problem "A serious error..." after msi deployment (8.0 on Vista)

Environment is Windows Vista Business with UAC enabled in a Win2003 policy controlled network.
    Files used:
acropro.msi provided on the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional volume licence CD.
acropro.mst created with Adobe Customization Wizard 8.
    Command executed:
    msiexec /i \\mynetwork\...\acropro.msi transforms=\\mynetwork\...\acropro.mst
    Situation:
After successful deployment of Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional, when Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional is run, after about 5 seconds I get the message saying: "A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again".
After searching google, this seems related to the activation service unable to contact a licence server.
Our volume licence CD is supposed to be pre activated. In fact, after manually running setup.exe on the same CD, everything works. And no activation is necessary. But not so using the msi.
    My question:
I want to deploy Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro using only the msi. Anyone has a idea?

Our problem was partly solved by ordering another CD with ALM (Auto License Management) disabled from Adobe. See the reference.
    http://www.adobe.com/elicensing/licensemanagement/alm/
Then Acrobat 8.0 installs Ok under an Admin account. The Acrobat 8.1 patch renders the software useable with non admin credentials.

  • A serious error with CS2

I'm using Photoshop CS2 (part of the Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium). Had it for about 6 years now (please don't tell me to get CS5). Never had a problem, until now.
It takes longer to load, "Application Not Responding" as soon as it opens, finally opens, and a window pops up saying:
"Sorry, a serious error has been detected. To continue using Adobe Creative Suite, please reinstall the application."
I reinstall it, same error. This is my 4th time reinstalling the program. I never get any other information or detail on what the error is. I'd like to have the problem fixed without having to go out and buy a new $500+ Photoshop.
    Please help me.
    Thanks.

After a software update last week. Photoshop continue quiting after launch. Tested with new admin user, deleted all preferences and adobe related program.
