Serious error using merged clips

Premiere crashes when I try to use a merged clip. When I double click on the clip it loads into the preview panel, but when I perform any actions such as overwrite or insert or if I right-click on the clip I get this message: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down..."
Here are the details:
All the clips I am using in the project are merged clips.
The video clips are AVCHD with reference audio, and the audio clips are .wav 48 MHz.
Running a Mac Pro OS X 10.9.3 and the latest update of Premiere Pro CC 2014
I have tried the following:
turned off GPU accelerated preview in favour of software only
deleted the merged clip and re-created it (in case it was somehow corrupt)
opened the project with a different system user (to rule out user settings)
started a project from scratch, merging the same clips and then performing similar tasks
emptied the After Effects cache
spent 90 minutes with tech support controlling my computer trying various things I'm not certain about
Wasting too much time. Tempted to revert to FCP until this is resolved. Please help.

I don't know about cc 2014, but in the past 5 months working in cc 7.2.1 & 7.2.2 I've found merged clips to be incredibly unstable/buggy. In one case a handful of merged clips were preventing me from importing sequences from other projects. I've run into issues where the match-frame function doesn't work with them, and worst of all every time I've used them they've significantly slowed down premiere (creating a very annoying lag between every interaction with the program).
My workaround has been to avoid merged clips at all costs, and instead use single-angle multicams to group video & audio from different sources. It ain't ideal, but it's been a far more stable workflow.
Don't know about the 2014 version - I'm afraid to give merged clips another serious try after all the headaches they've caused in the past. If anybody has seen improved stability with merged clips in the recent update I'd be very interested to hear.

  • After using Merge Clips in CS6, the resulting file now has two audio tracks

    Hey guys,
I'm running into a weird problem after using the Merge Clips option. I have my video and audio selected, I've already moved the audio so they're both synced. It looks like this:
Then I use Merge Clips and pull the new file into a new sequence which in turn looks like this:
I checked the audio channels for both and apparently the merged file separated the left and right audio channels into two separate streams as opposed to using the single stream for both channels like the original.
Anyway to prevent it from doing this?

    So according to Adobe's website: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS2bacbdf8d487e582-73725e6a12e5a6165d0-7f ff.html
At the very bottom they list limitations, one of which being "Merged clip audio results in mono track audio only."
Which I was familiar with before posting this. It doesn't seem however that the two tracks are mono it looks like they are two separate stereo tracks. If I mute one I still get audio in both speakers even though I muted the "right" track.
Here's what they look like in the audio mixer
The original only has the left most track.
I guess the only thing to do is just deal with it or render out each clip uncompressed to have that single audio channel.

  • Used "Merge clip" after rough cut, need to replace clips in timeline

I made a rough cut for a sequence I'm working on using just the embedded camera audio from the takes.  Now that the roughcut is done I've started Merging the external audio source with the clips.
What I need to know is if it is possible to replace the clips currently in my timeline with the new merged clips without having to go through and re-assemble the  entire timeline.
I read somewhere that alt-dragging should give me a green plus sign which I can use to replace the old clip with the new one but I am having no luck with that.

In the Project Panel, click the flyout menu; that's the little stack o' pancakes thing in the upper right corner of the panel. Select "Metadata Display." In the search box, type "usage"--this will reveal the Video Usage and Audio Usage metadata labels. Check those to add them, and hit OK; they'll now be added to the columns in the Project Panel. Now, you can sort on those columns to filter by usage--the unused clips won't have a number associated with that column. Select them all, and if you really want to purge them from the drive, hit Ctrl/Cmd+Delete--that will remove the media from the drive.
If you just want to get rid of the clips, Project > Remove Unused will do that.

  • Trim mode 'wrong frame' problems when using merged clips

    Hello there,
We are having a problem with the trim mode on FCP 6.0.4. We're working with 1080psf 24 Apple ProRes 422 material, captured using a AJA Kona card.
The sound and picture were recorded separately, and synced manually (by creating merged clips) in FCP.
When we go into the trim window, it shows a different frame as the incoming or outgoing frame on some clips. In other words it's not actually showing us the real frame before or after the cut. Instead it shows a frame that's half a second back, for example. When we preview the cut, it cuts in the 'right' place, but when we pause and try to fine cut the transition using +1 keys (or trim back/forward keys), it shows us the wrong frame. When we preview it again, the cut is still in the 'right' place - not the frame represented when it's stilled. This makes using trim mode nigh-on impossible since it's not actually showing you the frames you're cutting.
Are there any patches or workarounds to fix this issue? I can't find any fixes on forums/help sites or the FCP manual.
Tried trashing prefs, repairing disk permissions and all the usual maintenance stuff!
Exporting new Quicktimes of the merged clips and then re-importing them is not an option, as they need to be timecode accurate to be recaptured for the online and vfx work.
Any advice would be much appreciated - if no solutions exist we'll have to switch everything over to Avid, and that'd be a mammoth job.
    Many thanks in advance!

You may not be zoomed in enough in the Timeline window, the more you zoom in, the more detailed edit you can perform. Zoom out too much, and you won't have the sensitivity.

  • Trim Tool Using Merged Clips Not Working Correctly

I have a project that's made up of mostly merged Alexa clips. The camera spits out ProRes422 clips along with WAV audio files that were merged in Final Cut pro. The problem is that when I try to trim using the Trim tool, it will kick the footage in the viewer several seconds away from the frame I'm trying to trim. It's fine when it's in the sequence, but I can't view the frames I'm trimming in the viewer windows. For example, it will say that the "In Shift" is + or - 4:10 when it should only be reading :01 at a time.
Any ideas why this would happen and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Eddie

  • CS6.0.2 Merged clip bugs

Having struggled with my typical editing style using dual sync sound i've been able to replicate a few bugs, by listing them here my hope is to get other editors using "merged clips" with dual sync sound can find a solution around them.  This has come up a few times in the forums but hasn't specifically addressed the bugs.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4503977
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4676617#4676617
These bugs are with using Merged clips.
    1. using the match frame command from a clip in a sequence and then using a replace edit from source monitor on another clip, matches frame on video, but sync is off on the audio.  Using match frame on the newly replaced clip does reconnect to the correct timecode with the audio in sync, however the audio and video in and out points do not line up with the matched frame clip.  So you can't just use the overwrite edit with the matched framed merged clip.  Once you've matched frame with the incorrectly referenced audio, you can not use the replace edit command again, it gets grayed out.
    2. This same bug occurs when find an merged clip in the browser, creating in and out points and using the replace clip command from bin. The audio is out of sync and replace edit command becomes grayed out.
    3. Once the mismatch in the audio sync has occurred from the replace with match frame, the merged clip in the bin when loaded into the source monitor shows the inpoint and out point of the video, and a separate in and out point of the audio, which is not aligned properly like it was when it was originally created. Only when the in and out point of the audio and video are manually changed does the merged clip become a unified clip again. (one in and out point referencing both audio and video)
if anyone else can replicate this bugs it would be appreciated.
My clips have been manually synced in premiere, would be interested to see if pluraleyes' behavior is any different, but I don't have access to pluraleyes for Premiere if anyone can test.

Unfortunately this is not a spanned clip problem with Adobe or Panasonic. This issue does come up from time to time.
Be sure when you pull the card from your camcorder, you LOCK IT immediately. Then it becomes impossible to change anything on the card purposely or inadvertantly (and as you are aware, changing anything - structure, file names, ANYTHING - on the card will blow the whole operation, so locking it is perfect). Also, sometimes Mac users have problems when they fail to lock their cards, because Mac OS immediately starts writing files to the card if it's not locked.
When you're using the Media Browser in PPro, be certain that you are viewing the clips in AVCHD mode (there's a dropdown option for this right there in the Media Browser). If you're importing individual clips from a single continuous recording, you're NOT in AVCHD mode, and this will always cause the problem you are describing.
I don't mean to lay this out as "you're doing it wrong" but unfortunately this is all very well documented at this point, and whenever there is a problem with spanned clips, it is 100% of the time due to a user that renamed something, moved files, or otherwise didn't follow the complete rules of AVCHD management. I don't normally use a term like 100% (tend to prefer 99.9%) but I say 100% because it is absolute in this case.

  • Merged clips - are they all bugs or is there something wrong with my system?

I have to use merged clips to sync video and audio because making every clip a sequence is too cumbersome and doesn't give me thumbnails to help choose my shots. Apparently, merged clips are very buggy. I can't use colored markers because they don't get saved on merged clips. I can't use match frame on merged clips because they don't find the correct frame. I can't set a poster frame on a merged clip except with the "in" marker. Are all those problems bugs, or is there something wrong with my specific system. I trashed preferences to fix another problem unrelated to merged clips, but that didn't solve any of the clip problems.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with your system.

  • Relinking / Saving Merged Clips from being orphaned

I made the mistake of using Merged Clips to handle the merging of my dual system sound.
During my edit it seems like almost all the clips have become "orphaned" and no longer are connected back to the project clip.  REVEAL CLIP IN PROJECT doesn't work, and I'm no longer able to access SOURCE SETTINGS on the video portion of the clips.
Is there anyway to relink these or make it so I can easily access SOURCE SETTINGS again??  I've certainly learned my lesson about merged clips.  Definitely not going to be using them again.

You probably don't have any audio tracks targeted.

  • Merge clips and preserve audio clip names?

    Hey Guys,
I'm about to start editing a new project of mine that I just shot.  I used Premiere to edit my last project and loved it, save one problem I had after using the "Merge Clips" feature to sync my audio.  In order to save time, I used Merge Clips to sync my picture and sound rather than do it manually.  The feature worked really well, but I didn't notice until it came time to export my OMF that the "Merge Clips" feature had renamed all of my audio clips to the same name as the video clip it was sunc to.  This resulted in many broken links in the OMF.
Is there any way to use "Merge Clips" or a feature similar to it, that preserves the names and metadata of the master clips you're syncing?  I might just do it all by hand to be safe.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I do believe we've uncovered (yet another) bug. For the life of me, I couldn't get a video to sync to its respective WAV. The audio from both sources was clean and clear; if Premiere couldn't auto sync this, it couldn't sync anything...
Then the funny part: it could sync everything else together perfectly (DSLR, GoPro, HDV). I must admit I was impressed, GoPros record fairly horrible audio- but Premiere managed to sync them  accurately and quickly with the other cameras. It just treated the external audio as foreign and refused it.
Can someone from Adobe chime in? I'm here for questions.

  • Help with merged clip decision for a short film

Greetings and thanks in advance for any perspective you can offer.
I've begun to edit a short film (10 minutes) that has 3 hours of dailies.  The clips are all merged clips, created with dual system audio and synced with Plural Eyes 3.
However, before setting to what's sure to be months of work, I wonder if there was a better workflow.  Bear with me.  To begin with, marker comments do not stick with merged clips.  As soon as you select another clip - poof!  They're gone.  And there are other limitations that may or may not affect me down the road.  I guess I'm saying I'm not completely sure what I might want or need to do at some point, but I'm concerned that I'll be limited for using merged clips.
I've realized I can use Plural Eyes to merge my clips and audio fully outside of Premiere CC.  Those clips, once imported, retain marker comments and suffer no other "unique" limitations.
It will be a massive undertaking to resync, re-import, and retag and organize everything - but perhaps in the long haul this is prudent?  Or not?
I'm cutting with Prores 422 at full size 4K, so replacing media isn't a concern.  Anything else I should be worried about?  There's always a chance I'll use a 3rd party to color-correct with a DaVinci.
    Thanks again.

I shoot for about -6dB, with no peaks above 0dB.
Sounds like you have a very weak signal. I'd set away from PrPro and handle this in SB, or Audition. Listen carefully with a good pair of noise-canceling headphones first, and then test on monitors.
Are you working in mono, stereo or 5.1 SS?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Merge Clips w/ Synced Audio, Tracks Map Weird

I've synced some clips in a sequence. There's the camera with camera audio, then 3-4 discrete audio tracks from different files. When I click those clips and "Merge" them into one, then I open the clip created in the Project Panel, then look at that clips Mixer, the audio tracks are not in order they were in the sequence. They are in fact in no order. The camera Tracks which are on 1+2 in the sequence can be 1+5 or something with other audio tracks or dead tracks in there. I want to merge the clip and have the newly created file in the same order as the sequence. How do I do this? Thanks

I honestly don't know, I just don't use Merged Clips frequently enough.
But I do know that the track order for audio won't change the final output, like it will with video.  So..why worry about it?

  • "A serious error has occurred" when I attempt to drag a video clip to my timeline.

    Hello,
I'm using Premier Pro CC on Yosemite 10.10.1.  For some reason, whenever I attempt to drag a clip into a timeline — any clip in any project, new or old — Premier immediately crashes and I get an error: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred. Adobe Premier must shut down. We will attempt to save your project."
Here's the last crash report I got: gist:ebb14b58a932ff05a627
Obviously, I can't get any work done at this point, so I would greatly appreciate any help in trying to resolve this issue.

I was also experiencing crashes in Illustrator. I found my way to this thread and discovered that my problem is a Chrome extension called Pushbullet. After removing Pushbullet from Chrome and restarting my computer, I was able to drag clips in my timeline again. If you are using Pushbullet or perhaps another poorly executed Chrome extension, chances are, that could very well be the source of your problem!

  • Safari[454] error: clip:invalid context 0x0 serious error will become a fatal error

I keep getting a repetitive message in Console about Safari (even after the Mac OS X 10.9.3 Update). Can someone please tell me how to make this go away? I have only installed Safari from the Mac App Store with Mac OS X updates or Safari updates. Therefore, how can I fix this problem, as the error message states? This is an Apple software problem ...
5/15/14 8:13:16.787 PM Safari[454]: clip: invalid context 0x0. This is a serious error. This application, or a library it uses, is using an invalid context  and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system stability and reliability. This notice is a courtesy: please fix this problem. It will become a fatal error in an upcoming update.

I am getting spinning wheels on launching Apple apps (Mail, iPhoto, Finder etc). At log in my dock is taking literally one to two minutes to appear, instead of seconds. Launchpad icons take forever to actually display the icons (they come up empty until the dock finally appears). Apps are not updating automatically in the App Store, even though all settings are set for them to update automatically (and have been forever). Stuff like that.
